Have to respect Honda for giving us a manual option with the CR-Z. Nobody offered a manual hybrid but them.

True. The SOHC versions were just as slow as CR-Z. Some versions didn't even push 100HP and people still loved it. I think the only thing that really made this car fail is the fear of Hybrid system, but in reality... It's a great car. It does everything right. Plenty of mods for it. L Series sounds better then D, B or K Series. I heard few and Turbocharger they sound like an EVO.. and that's a complement, stock suspension is stiff and it corners great. Only thing that can put u down is the power... But you can get Supercharger kits from £2000 and make about 180BHP.
Thankfully now it seems like CR-Z are finally gaining popularity and interest that they always deserved, and since sales were so bad... Top spec models (like mine) will probably gain value in the future.

Honestly a k20 k24 swap on this car makes it stupid fast especially if you turbocharge it. There's a company that did a k20 awd turbo swap on an early honda insight and it's one of the fastest accelerating Hondas I've ever seen. It almost looks like they fast-forwarded the video.

I used to own a CR-Z for about four years and I loved the car. Not only was it one of the best looking cars on the road, but it was remarkably practical with a rather big boot and easily folding rear seats. I even used the rear seats for carrying actual people on several occasions, even though my friends joked that the rear seats were purposefully designed as a Japanese torturing device :-) The power was a little underwhelming, but it could drive decently fast when pushing the transmission to the limit. The transmission was hands down one of the best units I've ever used. The transmission in my current Mustang is decent and I like it a lot, but the CR-Z was so much more satisfying. That being said, the aluminium ball on the gear lever was a real pain in the winter. When it was really cold, I couldn't touch it with my bare skin which was seriously inconvenient. Another thing I miss is the awesome instrument cluster with the combined digital speedometer and analog tachometer. All things considered it was a fun little car that could easily become a legend if Honda decided to go with the engine of the 3rd gen Type R.

The hybrid part kept me away until I found a leftover new 2015 in 2016 discounted which I saw as a future battery replacement allowance. Dark gray with black contrast cut wheels. This car is so good with enough sport and looks that I hope to run it till the battery craps out and maybe after. No way the crx was as well made and as safe and comfortable and no way the original insight was as good day to day and as stable at high speed. If you're a honda guy and want something sportier than the excellent fit, get it. Mpg low 40's city and highway, doesnt matter.

Saw the mixed reviews but as a tech I knew what I was getting into, and after 4 years and 140 000kms still love driving it everyday. And it is very sporty for low reving 1.5L engine that is has. I put 1 inch wheel spacers on the rear to bring out the inset wheels and left the rims stock as I liked them, added rear spoiler and a Takeda CAI and then my aftermarket stereo, tinted the windows, and other then change the oil I have not done a single other thing.

Great review! I'm picking up a 2012 ex, cherry red with black rims and slight tint tomorrow. I've wanted this car for years!! My car now is finally worth more than I owe on it, so after looking at cr-zs dreaming for the past 3 years in finally a reality. So amped. The sport mode is so incredibly fun, you truly feel the boost, and like you said there is slight drift in the back, but I can adapt to that, and if that is the only issue for driving really, I'm ok with that. So many pros with this car.

The original Honda Insight from the early 2000s was a hybrid that was available as a manual. I owned an automatic for a couple of years and it was really neat, curb weight of 1800 pounds will let you keep the speed through the corners really well, which was needed because the 0 to 60 was around 12.5. I considered trying to modify it, but the only real way to get performance from that was a K-series engine swap....which is awesome, but so expensive.

Funny how this video inspired me into getting one of these. Now after a year or so... I finally got one, and it's... Great. For a kid that looks for fun sports car (especially in UK) I wouldn't look much further. You can insure it fairly cheap, and it drives well, goes well and get decent MPGs.
Yes in straight line it is lacking on stock motor, even I realized it after a week... When I got a little more confident.

I bought a 2011 CR-Z in October of last year, mostly for the economy. Gas here in Hawaii mid May is over $3.65 /gal. I did an experiment on gas mileage. I switched to 89 octane, which gives me 44-45 mpg consistently, using mileage divided by gallons used, not the onboard computer. A recent trip of 215 miles gave me 47.5 mpg. Plus it's a BLAST to drive. This last fill-up I put in 93 octane premium to see if it makes any difference in mileage or performance. The next tank will give more of an accurate result, having less remaining 89 octane in the mix. It's only supposed to get about 37 or so combined mileage on 87 octane, so I'm really happy with it. The interior layout is a perfect layout for my wife and I. The "back seat" panel is usually folded down, which gives out-of-view storage for small items.
Thanks for your great review of that CR-Z. I subscribed, so looking forward to seeing more videos.

Got my CRZ a couple months ago and always loved the styling, but the performance put me off on paper, but after owning the car for a while, it makes up for the lack of power in fun. It handles very well and response from the engine is great. Coming from owning an Integra GSR this car was definitely a more comfortable, cost saving and overall smart transition. Hasn’t let me down once. Except maybe going up hills lol.

When I saw it for the first time at a car show I was exited. But when I found out they went hybrid and did not offer a high revving VTEC mill I was permanently put off. They would have sold a lot more with a proper VTEC in it, that's for sure. They practically cut out the only group that would give a damn about those cars. I suppose we should have been thankful there was a hybrid with a manual transmission...

I bought one in 2010 when they first came out and loved just about everything. I only did a few cosmetic upgrades. My average MPG was in the 50s. The car turned heads the entire 6 years I had it. With the limited number run, most didn’t know what it was or how much (little) it cost. I would definitely purchase another.

I experienced the head turning as well. It freaked me out for a bit, because I kept noticing cars slowing down while passing my house, and I started to get paranoid thinking they were casing my place to rob. Then I noticed it happening when I was at my Mom's house as well and when it happened while I was chatting with her neighbor out front, I finally realized it was the CAR parked out front that they were slowing to look at. Someone told me it looked like a spaceship once ...😆

    1. Yes, the 1st gen Insight was available in both stick & CVT versions. I had the stick version. 53 MPG, and slow as an armadillo.
"Only Hybrid with a stick" referred to current production. 2. No rear seat in the U. S. because our safety rules require enough room for an average adult male to sit there without his head hitting the roof or rear window. The CR-Z is just too small back there. 3. I am on my second CR-Z, as is my wife. We each had a 2011, then she got a 2015, and I got a 2016. 170,000+ miles on mine when I traded it, never needed a single repair. I get about 43 MPG out of each of mine, and I drive the tires off this thing. It is a riot to toast unsuspecting WRXs. No chance with the STi, though. She gets about 46-47 from hers. Guess she's the better driver! Only reason I traded mine was Honda discontinuing the CR-Z. I knew if I ever wanted another one, and I did, then it was 2016 or never. Even if Honda does come out with a new version, it almost certainly won't be a 40+ MPG hybrid. :-(

The guy laughed at me and told me the factory that made them was destroyed in that tsunami. Honda had bigger plans originally. Jackson Racing was going to supply them with a supercharged Si version. They actually sold all the blowers that got made and quit pushing the car while they rebuild. Real shame. If you can find one of the Jackson blowers they are the way to go. Not quiet as weird under the hood either.

I've had my CR-Z (also a 2011) for about 7 months now and I genuinely think I like it more than my 2006 Jetta GLI. Sure I'm no longer turbo'd, but I feel better about my carbon footprint, the electric motor gives you a nice kick down low with instant torque, it has V-tec, it's a 6 speed HYBRID, it saves me a ton of cash on 87 refills ,the car is sleak AND some of the body mods I've seen are incredible, and finally the car has sooooo much potential for mods. I can see this as being a hot buy in the future as sporty cars get harder to find that aren't plastic or full EV. I think these are in the last gen of ICE engines and I can see their value shooting up in the next 10-15 years.
In the future I'd love to see an AWD conversion with a small turbo that kicks in at 3k rpm. If your battery is depleted you might struggle to climb hills (gotta love Appalachia), but with a turbo that start kicking in around 2700-3k rpm I think it'd provide the PERFECT supplement to the low end torque of the electric motor assist and still give awesome gas mileage. I'm rarely above 3k rpm unless I'm on an on-ramp :)

its weird to me that people dont realize that the hondas we think of today were not their intention when making the car. The CRX is literally a 50MPG econo box that had 50hp. It wasnt until engine swapping that it was something desirable. This is exactly what the CRX was. a "sporty" economy car that gets really good MPG. the insight was the real hybrid car. also the CRX didnt have back seats in America but it did in other markets as well.

I love my 2012 CR-Z. Honestly I see more insight in it than crx. It's so fun to rip this car around city blocks. The auto-off is nice but can get annoying because it turns off things like heat or ac. Hill assist is nice when I want to be lazy and not use the parking brake and I prefer not having rear seats. I can fit my bike in the back. I want to know where he got those leather seats from!

Well, I'm a proud owner of 2012 CRZ myself. I bought it about a two months ago, and oh boy, I'm in love with that thing. Great mileage, sporty feel.. I agree with all you said in the video, it's amazing mix from both of the worlds - petrol & electric, and all of that without being boring. The only thing I do not like about it is the engine on kind of weaker side, it could definitely benefit from having more power than the stock engine has. But with a supercharger or engine swap it's perfect long haul sleeper - something like Ferrari FF on a budget.

Honda held back on a number things with the CR-Z imho, all of which can be remedied with some aftermarket parts. An aftermarket suspension really helps the most at addressing the Insight-like handling. A good aftermarket wing solves the floaty feeling, and gives the CR-Z a solid feel during hard cornering, with very neutral drift at speed.
I’m really considering this supercharger upgrade for mine. I wish Honda had offered these three major improvements as a performance package at the dealership, this car is a really fun daily driver for my 2 hr round trip commute. Still makes me smile each time I hit the road, I feel that Honda just missed the mark by a little on the stock setup.

Honda were ahead of their time with the CRZ, they tried to give the public something that the public wasn't ready for.
Nor did they market it right. It doesn't do hybrid mileage, and it doesn't do hot hatch performance - but it wasn't designed to do those things. The idea of a hybrid CRX created a false expectation in people's mind.
If they came out with this today, with the latest tech for a little more power and a little more economy, it'd take off. People are more environmentally conscious than they were even ten years ago, and gas prices have only one way to go...
Also, I don't know about American traffic, but in Europe, all the horsepower in the world won't do you a bit of good sitting behind a diesel powered Fiat at the lights 🤷🏻‍♂️
People should stop playing top trumps and start thinking about what's actually going to be best suited to their daily driving needs.

I think it's wrong to talk about this car being the same kind of hybrid as a Prius. A hybrid uses battery and electric motors as the primary drive, with the ICE motor either acting as a supplement to torque or just generating electricity. This is why most 'conventional hybrids have tiny ICE motors that are tuned to run at a constant RPM, much like a genset.
The CR-Z is opposite. The drivetrain is primarily driven by the gas motor, and the electric subsystem is just a boost for the gas engine, like during a hillclimb. And just like a regular car, tuning the ICE motor gets you real gains.
Honda's name for this hybrid type is 'Integrated Motor Assist."
The fact that the engine turns off at stoplights really has nothing to do with the electric or hybrid part of this car, either. There are plenty of regular gas cars that do that, too.
Man, I miss my '91 CRX DX. It was stolen and chopped in 2002, found by the police as an empty shell dumped on the side of the road. :-(

Truly, Honda did a damn good job with the CRZ, yet people didn't understand it enough to accept it.
On the back seat issue: Nissan did the same thing; the X-Trail, which is our Rogue, has an standard third row seat, while ours is a little known option. What's up with that?
And Honda needs to bring out a new generation CRX, to compete in rallycross. That'll be wicked.

The first gen Honda Insight was a hybrid and a manual. Also here in Europe we have the Suzuki Ignis which you can get as a hybrid and with a manual.

I’m not a fan of hybrids and full electric vehicles, but I like that fact that Honda decided to give the CRZ a manual trans instead of giving it a CVT trans and paddles.

The Honda insight had a manual option but the crz is the first 6 speed manual in a production hybrid

I test drove this car when it first came out. I had high hopes despite the hybrid system. It actually felt the same as a base acura rsx so i thought that eventually the will have release a type R or Si version with more power in the near future...
    We are still waiting Honda
    Soichiro must be very disappointed

There are Manual Hybrid Civics. Someone at my University has one, I walk by it almost every day.
