I wouldn't say mowzie is the best when it comes to accepting backlash. Basically any and all criticism towards the reasoning for why he changed the barakoas has been met with the lol cow response of "sToP dIrEsPeCtInG mY wOrK!!!!!!". Further more when people rightfully took issue with the umvuthi and Abavuthana replacing the barako and barakoas he saw it as an attack to his work and accused people of calling said work "unimportant". I don't mean to spread hate to mowzie but I think sometimes he can be a bit naive and just lack common Sense overall.

@@dddripz because the combination of "tribe" + "magic" + "not white skin" + "masks" + "aggressive" resembles racism for some people. And twitter being twitter, of course.
I really think the sunbird it's better than sunchief... This animations of the 3d model* causes more impact, looks really like a demi god, the attacks and powers it's more imponent. Every single change it's really pretty for me
I'm gonna be honest, but the SUN BIRD is objectively way fucking cooler then some normal tiki looking dude from before and its not even a competition between em.
It moreso shows their connection to the Sun but it's not "objectively" better than barako at all. That's purely subjective no matter which way you look at it.
I don't know why people keep saying this. How is the sunbird "objectively better" than the barakoa? Concepts such as the sun bird have existed for hundreds of thousands of years in different mythologies, religions, and sections of fiction. The barakoa however are living masks empowered by the sun that pose themselves as goblinoid creatures living in a tribal like setting. I don't know about you but I've never seen such a unique take on goblins and tiki cave men before. The Abavuthana on the other hand just look like generic boss creatures that you'd see in a game like terraria or something, which is fine but it's a huge contrast from the comical, stylized and goblinoid designs of the barakoa.
The barakoa werent racist at all, it was very clear thet they were magical sentient masks and the way they spole was very enjoyable. That said the sun birds are a massive ugrade in design and execution in every shape and form, but the barakoas were sillier and more fun to witness
The thing I'm confused about is how is Umvuthi any better than Barako from a racism angle? The Barakoa were goblins with an African tribal motif, the Abavuthana are birds with an Aztec tribal motif. Nothing really changed. The only thing you can say about Barako is that his appearance seems to be inspired by goblins and Mayan depictions of ancient gods who most of which looked very human like with tribal masks and other tiki-like appearances, now while these would be fair comparisons I fail to see how any of these similarities are inherently racist or match up with most stereotypes of Africans. A lot of people say that Barako's design is stereotypical in nature but I honestly don't believe this to be true because almost every time I've looked up caricatures that even remotely resemble the Barakoa, almost all of them only share about 1 or 2 traits like wearing feathers or having bows or bones as weapons, ect. The Umvuthi is a completely different story though, even on surface level Umvuthi has many parallels to real life tribes such as the Aztecs with their tribal bird aesthetics and extreme worshipping of the sun. It doesn't just end at thematic similarities though since the Abavuthana all have striking resemblance to old native American and Aztec bird & mosquito masks and other parts of their cultures. The Umvuthi in particular having a very noticeable resemblance to old tribal bird masks as well as mosquito masks, which is very interesting considering a large part of the reason why Barako was deemed offensive was because of "cultural appropriation" yet the Umvuthi actually fits this term better. Hell, the Umvuthi even looks a lot like those old bird attires and costumes the native Americans used to wear due to superstitious purposes and seeing as how Umvuthi is characterized to be a monster that only exists to be killed by the player... I just can't help but thinking that it may come off as a demonization of African culture.
@@IsaiahJones-rw1pc Utterly insane rant. "Nah I can't see in any way how the Barakoa were racist, BUT the Abavuthana is absolutetly super racist" with the source being: trust me bro.
Its sad seeing the Barrakoa go after a stupid controversy, but what Mowzie was able to cook s a replacement is fantastic, a lot of thoughts were put into creating these news mobs and they are objectively more original than the Barrakoas. As much as I'm a Barrakoa man at heart, Umvuthanas are really really cool, they look like they are coming straight of a Zelda game and thats great
@@Boamere it wasn't just people saying it was racist with no reason btw. Streamers and other players were making racist remarks about the Barakoa, and actual indigenous people expressed discomfort over the depiction. I just wanted to say, despite what everyone else here is saying, I deeply appreciate this change. I cannot even begin to describe how soul crushing it was to see everyone speak so highly of this mod and include it in every modpack when the Barakoa was in it. It felt so dehumanizing and disgusting coming across them. Mowzie is clearly talented, and I loved his other ideas. But the Barakoa always left me feeling sick to my stomach. It was a terrible reminder of how most people view people like my family (tribal savages). So tell him at least one person greatly greatly appreciates this.
I think a lot'a folks confuse satirical takes and work that's inspired by real world tribes for racism nowadays. Racism involves thinking less of someone because of their race, but thinking that a creative work is racist just because it depicts a fantasy race in a tribe, like the controversy about orcs a few years back, is a bit racist on its own, it'd mean that you thought that being in tribes somehow made the people or creatures in it lesser, and that it was the writers intention to make fun of tribal people. It involves a whole lot of assumptions, and seems to be fueled by a want to create drama. I hope that stuff like this doesn't hinder people from taking inspiration from real world civilizations in the future, as that'd set a scary precedent for writers and creative work in the future.
Say what you want about the barakoa looking like "stereotypical" African tribes (even though they don't) but the inspiration behind them had nothing to do with the natives themselves, mowzie even admitted this. The barako are objectively not racist because they do not represent African tribes or any stereotypes used to dehumanize them over the years. By the logic mowzie has been using you can pretty much blame any creature design or work of art that shares any similarities with the barakoas of being "racist". I'm hoping mowzie eventually comes to his senses and realizes this because his stance on this whole situation sets a pretty bad precedent for his future work regarding this mod and the entirety of mod making as a whole.
@@Mariwendhonestly I think changing them was the right call given Mozie’s own rationale for doing so. Ultimately they themselves thought the original was problematic and wanted to change it so more people could actually enjoy the mod. And we got a fire design out of it too.
@@foureyesisafish7968 Because other people started telling them it was problematic. If they originally thought it was problematic, why did they make it in the first place? It's funny because those who deemed the original was problematic are actually the racist ones. You know why? Barokoas were just weird goblin people while Umvuthanas are cool bird people and fit the Savanna feel a lot more imo
The barakoa situation is sad, but it's out of the mod creator's power to control how people will react to an old design, be it through a justifiable sense of shock/alarm, oversensitivity, or overt racism. The sunbird is a better, more fitting design to the mod regardless, and won't offend anyone, so I'm happy to see the mod grow as a result of the situation :)
Majority of people seem to want Barako back tho so i whoudnt say that necesarily. Also the new sunbird has allready gotten claims its racist towards Native Americans so no people got offended by this aswell.

The bird feels overdesigned compared to the more vanilla looking bosses. I think a really cool change would’ve been instead to change it to pigs instead of birds. Keep the blocky nature of the chonky old sun chief, add some big ole tusks, go for a whole sun praising, Aztec orc tribe vibe.
I miss the old guys, the birds are a good idea but the giant yellow circle, obviously looking like a sun, still doesbt look right with the way it rotates, it would have been better as a flat texture behind the mask
The more calculated combat patterns of the avian like race would be amazing for a new mob in vanilla minecraft instead of the usual "charge" towards the player.
I think the biggest loss for me about the Barakoa changing, is that they gave me huge Crash Bandicoot vibes. I love the Umvuthana as a replacement, but I’ll still miss the Barakoa personally, they were such an iconic mob group. I do hope Mowzie makes the Umvuthana make bird noises talking to eachother and the player though, that’d be a fun qol replacement for the Barakoa gibberish
There are four types of barakoas: Mangrove-blue(Moon) Savanna-red(Sun) Jungle-green(Moon) Desert-yellow(Sun) Sun barakoas leave a trail of burned footprints, while moon barakoas leave a trail of frozen ones. These can be removed faster with an water bucket or fire. Barakoas masks don't change in each biome, what changes is their village skin and leader(moon chiefs are skinny while sun chiefs are fat) The masks of the chiefs grants the players with their respective barakoa(moon or sun) abillities and health boost or regeneration depending on the culture. You can trade with moon barakoas with silver and with sun barakoas with gold
say what you will about the reasoning behind it, but I think the sun birds are just a genuinely better looking and better feeling mob group. They also feel infinitely more unique than "goblins who wear tribal masks and throw spears and shoot darts".
Blowdarts and spears seem a lot more fitting for a goblin race than a naturally clawed, skinny, raptor like bird. + These birds being bright and skinny makes it hard to actually understand their designs and they somewhat end up looking like blobs attacked to a glowing ball.
@@Robotlizardguything most of the birds just use their hands anyway, and you can still just *craft* blow darts. From what I've seen, they just use their claws.
I absolutely LOVE the new model, but it’s a pity that this is not a separate tribe but a redesign( In my world I made Barako a corrupt deputy, but now Barako is a bird
It looks like leader is based off a Secretary Bird! 🤩 Edit: as someone who misses the old design as well, i like to believe this is the new generation of The Sun God. Perhaps they continued the legacy after the original god died?
So they replaced the chief? That sucks. Wonder why they didn’t make the bird a separate boss. Sun chief felt more proper as the tribe leader than a plump birb
People on Twitter said Sun Chief's Tribe Design was Racist (African Race Simliar to that) as they say a weird language many people found it racist & disrespectful
On the day of the update, an echo shook the world, and a piece of all of us had also died. Although I miss the old ones, I must say the secretary birds are pretty dang cool, the animation are butter smooth, the designs are thought out, and the models look amazing. I'm sad to see them go but I know it was (mostly) needed
I like how you expect me to want to kill them lol, its not like "they're aggressive so you want to defend yourself" or something, its already "here's how they attack and what they drop"
Ill miss the sun king but this makes me feel less bad in killing the sun tribe now. I remember after getting the mask they was chill homies n had the lm fight for me.
I do hope that somebody makes a resource pack to bring back the old designs for newer versions of the mod. While I understand the reason for the change, people should be able to experience legacy content/styles if they choose to.
@@cyancybershockMy brother in stupidity christ, the old designs 10 times better than what this KFC stuff this is. The only reason it got changed because idiots thought the mobs were racist.... IN A MINECRAFT MOD
Gonna put my two cents into this discussion due to the changes in design & such. I like the new design, just feels more connected to the sun & I feel it helps further accentuate the mask spirit vibe I get from them, and the designs & such to me are genuinely amazing! I know a lot of people don't like the new design but I'm putting my own opinion in since I think it'd be nice With me saying this, I could see the Biloko possibly taking slight design inspiration from the Barakoa(not a copy paste back into the mod, just taking elements like the mask designs as they are the rivals to the Abavuthana after all, maybe it's ruined masks that they've repurposed into masks for their own tribe.) The more human-like designs would fit with the Biloko being simian-like, and just in general could be neat to see old concepts get brought back for the rival group. Either way though, while the old designs were cool, completely understand Mowzie either way, with or without context because either way, we got something cool out of a redesign! Ain't much to argue over something that in the end isn't too bad of a change because at the end of the day, they functionally are still the same.
really glad to see barako changed. I've been avoiding this mod and videos featuring it because the old version was extremely unconfortable 😅 the light effects on the birds is a really cool effect too

Saying the barakoa are "racist" is like saying villagers are racist since they slightly resemble bad caricatures of jewish people with their abnormally large noses. Are we gonna remove them from the game too and blast Mojang on Twitter for using "racist stereotypes"?
I like these bird models a lot more than the older barakoa to be honest, not because of the situation but because they got slick animations that just *ooze* with character That, and the barakoa sounds were annoying as all hell
Oh so someone thought the last version was racist? Lmao, this is similar with how people got offended by orcs. I love how these people don't see the irony in both. Y'all are waayyyy to obsessed with race nowadays.
I mean I like the designs and they do look cool but like I just think it was unneeded I liked the barakoa any time I had mowzies I would spend a lot of time just being with them as far as the real world relationships go that's my people's culture or at least what it was I don't look back at my ancestors and go ew I look back and I think it's cool when I see that stuff in media I think it's cool I don't see the negative view to where in be correlated with racism
None of us blame you for the accidental mistake! You had no idea and explained that you based the Barakoas on goblins, but we can all understand why that's a big No-No. Maybe you can find some way to rework the Barakoas in a different way, like Villagers of an unknown village? I think you might have to ask the players of Native/Indigenous ethnicities for some ideas. I think some more research on ideas could be helpful, like how you did with the Sun Bird tribes. I think reworking them as Lizard People might work, since reptiles are more prone to spend time in the sun or something, but that's just a thought. Even though I never played this Mod (I play MineCraft on the Switch), I think the color difference between the mobs is a great change. The Barakoas' skin colors looked too green and almost blended with the areas of the Biomes. But I do hope the players gets more creative tribes and such like the Sun Birds in any future mod updats.
Rip to the barakoa, pretty understandable that they’d get redesigned but it’s still sad The Umvuthana look dope as hell though and it was a very much worthy redesign
Interesting rationale for replacing the Barakoa. I wonder if enough people saw Barako the Sun Chief in the MrBeastGaming videos, cause his design was never a problem for a long time. Regardless, Barako is a classic modded mob, so I’m unsure how I feel about this. The new designs are OK, but a bit odd, too. Their heads look strange.
Thing is with umvuthi is that he actually looks like a sun good the sun bird actually makes Sence to have sun powers then Barako the sun chief yeah the sun chief has it in the name for tribe and tradition that’s why he looks different and looks like he would not have sun powers but he has sun tattoos for tribal traditions which I love and his language and the minions they dance and use weapons and magic sticks to heal and talk and there masks move when they talk the birds on the other hand they have foot prints and there hands glow because they a a solar orb on them looks cool but also the thing I don’t like is when the sun bird summons the minions his mouth looks so smalll that when he shoots the masks out it looks wrong because the mask are bigger then his mouth Barako’s mouth was left t size he could make his mouth bigger and longer and the sun beam to liked great when he fired it umvuthi he shoots the laser beam it looks weird Vaud his mouth is small and the beam covers his whole face and he shoots the laser beam down so if you have the sun bird on floor level and he shorts the laser beam he’s not going to be able to hit his target with the sun beam because he aims at the ground so that should be fixed because he doesn’t hit his target and he moves his head when he shorts the laser beam very slowly it takes forever for him to hit his Oppenheimer with the laser beam because he aims down at the ground and he moves his head very slowly to the right or left he should be able to move his head a butter faster and have better aim at his target
I just realized you can use a command to give yourself the sunblock effect and put it at the strongest limit so then you can be invisible and glow yellow hahah
There are 2 Barakoa tribes, one in the savannas and other in jungles, the ones in savannas praise the sun while the ones in jungles praise the moon, the moon chief is skinny while the sun chief is fat. While sun barakoas leave the ground schorched while they walk, moon barakoas leave it frozen, they share the same masks, what changes is the body colour. When both tribes encounter they forget what tgey were doing beforehand and start atacking each other. When killed all barakoas drops masks that gives effects to the user. The mask are: Mask of fury: Strenght Mask of rage: Haste Mask of misery: Resistence Mask of bliss: Jump Boost Mask of fear: Speed Mask of faith: Health Boost Barakoas will become passive if you wear a mask, and if you wear one of the chiefs masks you create baraokas of your own with the masks mentioned prior By giving a gold block to a sun chief or a silver block to a moon chief you gain sun or moon blessing, making you able to use the respective chief magic.

@@leoultimaupgraded9914 I'ma talking about the sinergy of the attacks, the Sunbird seems more powerful, makes more sense
The battle animations are insanely good though (especially the supernova thing), probably better than the previous one
I think it would’ve been even cooler if the tiki guys were kept and the birds guys were added as a rival tribe.
the drum animation looks goofy tho
I don't know why people keep saying this. How is the sunbird "objectively better" than the barakoa? Concepts such as the sun bird have existed for hundreds of thousands of years in different mythologies, religions, and sections of fiction. The barakoa however are living masks empowered by the sun that pose themselves as goblinoid creatures living in a tribal like setting. I don't know about you but I've never seen such a unique take on goblins and tiki cave men before. The Abavuthana on the other hand just look like generic boss creatures that you'd see in a game like terraria or something, which is fine but it's a huge contrast from the comical, stylized and goblinoid designs of the barakoa.
you know, I like them a LOT more as secretary bird-people
The barakoa werent racist at all, it was very clear thet they were magical sentient masks and the way they spole was very enjoyable.
That said the sun birds are a massive ugrade in design and execution in every shape and form, but the barakoas were sillier and more fun to witness
true
but sometime you just have to avoid a potential call out post

BobMowzie is a personal friend of mine and it’s been so cool seeing this come to fruition :)
There are four types of barakoas:
Mangrove-blue(Moon)
Savanna-red(Sun)
Jungle-green(Moon)
Desert-yellow(Sun)
Sun barakoas leave a trail of burned footprints, while moon barakoas leave a trail of frozen ones. These can be removed faster with an water bucket or fire.
Barakoas masks don't change in each biome, what changes is their village skin and leader(moon chiefs are skinny while sun chiefs are fat)
The masks of the chiefs grants the players with their respective barakoa(moon or sun) abillities and health boost or regeneration depending on the culture.

Gonna put my two cents into this discussion due to the changes in design & such.
I like the new design, just feels more connected to the sun & I feel it helps further accentuate the mask spirit vibe I get from them, and the designs & such to me are genuinely amazing! I know a lot of people don't like the new design but I'm putting my own opinion in since I think it'd be nice
With me saying this, I could see the Biloko possibly taking slight design inspiration from the Barakoa(not a copy paste back into the mod, just taking elements like the mask designs as they are the rivals to the Abavuthana after all, maybe it's ruined masks that they've repurposed into masks for their own tribe.)
The more human-like designs would fit with the Biloko being simian-like, and just in general could be neat to see old concepts get brought back for the rival group. Either way though, while the old designs were cool, completely understand Mowzie either way, with or without context because either way, we got something cool out of a redesign! Ain't much to argue over something that in the end isn't too bad of a change because at the end of the day, they functionally are still the same.
I miss Barako and Barakoas. 😞

I like it but I still like the old tribe, I wish they could stay as well.

The mask are:
Mask of fury: Strenght
Mask of rage: Haste
Mask of misery: Resistence
Mask of bliss: Jump Boost
Mask of fear: Speed
Mask of faith: Health Boost
Barakoas will become passive if you wear a mask, and if you wear one of the chiefs masks you create baraokas of your own with the masks mentioned prior
By giving a gold block to a sun chief or a silver block to a moon chief you gain sun or moon blessing, making you able to use the respective chief magic.
