The Barako was definitely more memorable, being a fat yet powerful tribal leader with a face made of gold, you can’t forget a design like that. Umvuthi looks cool though, and the design more directly shows their connection to the sun, so I’m not complaining. Barako will always be remembered.

@tonyjenssen4157 The key word here is STEREOTYPES. They don’t act like _real_ native Americans or Africans, but there sure are a lot of mean-spirited stereotypes where it’s eerily close.
I think overall, Umvuthi and his Abavuthana (still getting a hang of using the pluralization, so I could be misspelling that) are better in terms of design, concept, animations, etc... I think the one thing Barako and the Barakoa have over their avian replacements is personality.
@@dinovaldo9341 For me, the reason the Barakoa beat out the Abavuthana is more due to their avian counterparts lacking personality. If it makes any sense, they don't feel... Intelligent, at least not in the same way the Barakoa did. They feel more like spirits than a species, which I have no doubt is intentional and gives them a very distinct feeling, but in doing so a lot of the personality was lost. They don't use tools (conventional or otherwise) like the Barakoa did. They also don't talk like the Barakoa did (while the Abavuthana do make noises I don't think they have a language, but I could be wrong). Granted, they do still trade and assumedly built the stuff in their grove. But even then, their trades are almost all for either food or gold nuggets and their grove's architecture makes the Barakoa's village look advanced by comparison. To simply what I'm trying to say, the Barakoa felt like a society deeply devoted to their creator, while the Abavuthana are still deeply devote to their creator but don't feel like a society. I do still really enjoy the unnatural and alien feeling of the Abavuthana though, and of course if I'm not making any sense do tell me.

It’s a shame Barako and his tribe got replaced due to racism allegations… I hope the mod’s team lets him return some day, maybe in a new form, seeking to take revenge on the usurpers… Imagine: Barako, the dethroned king of silver; wearing a mask of the same metal alongside his tribe’s remnants in honor of their new moon god, who adopted them when the sun god turned their back on them. This new tribe is locked in perpetual war with the sunbirds, and will attack them on full moon nights. The player could be able to side with either, shifting the balance of day and night, and gaining buffs at different times, or resizing these 2 halves so that days or nights become longer, until one of the bosses is felled, and the world enters eternal light or darkness
The reason why Barakoa and Barako were replaced: The reason is twitter said it was too similar to african tribe mask and said that it's racist, even the creator told to someone the reason why that I saw on discord (still miss them) [EDIT] the creator Bob Mowzie posted on TH-cam community explaining the reason today

the barakoa weren't even based on the natives. Mowzie based them off of mythological creatures and various other monsters in other video games that only took slight inspiration from African American tribes. That's not even mentioning how the barakoa don't even slightly match with the stereotypical depictions of native tribes at all. Saying the barako looks like the natives is like saying that the umvuthi resembles the Aztecs when in reality there's no correlation at all. I get art is subjective and all, but I will NEVER understand how people saw the comical, stylized, and goblinoid designs of the barakoas as "racist". It's also baffling how little people can't recognize the clear difference between mythological inspired creatures and racial stereotypes. Like some of these people really need to be educated on racism if they think living masks posing as goblins in a tribal setting "represents" any racist stereotypes.
If you genuinely think the barako and barakoa are "racist" because they use tribal asethetics that says more about you than the barakoa or the creator of the mod itself.

I honestly liked the barakoa as they felt like a unique take on goblins, but I know Bob had reason to change them. Let us look forward to the future of this mod! I can't wait for the sculptor
There were some benefits with the remodel such as better animations but there were a lot more losses to its design change. Barako could speak which was one of the biggest losses in my opinion because it made the Barakoa feel more alive. With the rework also some things such as spears and darts have completely lost their hook. So in my opinion overall the update was an L mechanically and made the Barakoa which are now the Umvuthana less interesting. The design isn't too shabby though and the animations are a lot better than Barakos. Personally I liked the Barakoa more because they had more too them separating them from the rest of the mindless (albeit cool looking) mobs that are already in Mowzies mobs which are just monsters. Just wish he hadn't turned the Barakoa into a exact copy of the Biloko design wise both being more like monsters than a tribe. Hope Mowzie at least takes more of the good parts of the Barakoa and put them into the Umvuthana. Me personally the best scenario is for Mowzie to just change them back and realizes he cant satisfy everyone, especially complainers who cant appreciate his work.
So... Are Barakas actually racist? I mean, if you look at it at face value, sure. They're little tribesmen in masks and their chieftan is a fat sun demigod.... But in order for something to be racist... well, it needs to actually be "Racist". What is that supposed to be racist towards? You might say "African culture", yeah, but which one though. Plenty of them involve masks for different purposes, sun symbology; hell, I would even say that Barako has some elements of Mesoamerican culture with a face of gold and stuff, and looking more Mayan than, say, Maasai. If those were little knights from a Canterlot-sounding castle, speaking English-french-german-simlish, would people say it's racist towards all Europeans? If those were little samurai warriors, speaking in anime grunts and vaguely japanese sounding gibberish, would people say it's racist towards Asians, or even just Japanese? If those were little cartoon romans with big shields that looked like Marvin the Martian and yelled military "Hut"s and "Hrumpf"s, would people say it's racist towards... Anyone? If this is a racist caricature, then of whom exactly, because I cannot pin them to any existing culture. And if you say "Africans because they're tribesmen with a fat chief" THAT'S racist. Cause first of all, Africa isn't the only place with tribal culture. Barako's fat, so he could be more a caricature of a polynesian stereotype. But you cannot take a trope of "Tribe people" and reserve them for Africa specifically. As for why the author changed them... Well, He saw some streamer or whoever making..... problematic comments about the Barakas. But I would say that's more the streamers problem... In fact, no I am 100% sure that it is. Moral of the story: Don't play the social justice game. You will always lose in time. No matter how holy thou art, there will be someone holier than thou sooner or later.
There's no point in arguing with the nut jobs in this comment section. They're so convinced they are right that they've thrown away all forms of logic just to appease their broken feelings. But what more can you truly expect from emotionally unintelligent people?
i interpreted the whole "racism" thing as targeted towards like, the aztecs or some other mesoamerican civilization. iirc they had a big history of worshipping the sun, but honestly arguing that it is racist is stupid and the people who made that connection to begin with are utterly deranged.
@@Shovel________________ I mean, yeah, but Mesoamericans weren't tribal. They had a society about as advanced as the Roman Empire. I think we can have a middle ground between those who want barakas back and those whose doesn’t want the “racist caricature” by adding them as neutral villager basically, they would be naturally passive, and you could trade with them for items that can’t be found somewhere else. They will only attack if you attack first, and they will defeat nearby monsters, so living with them is a valid strategy. They will be somewhat hard to kill, and you will get nothing if you kill them, so best keeping them alive and well And like many people here said, the birds need voiceline to add to the personality

Feels like a lot of the charm of Barako was not carried over to the revision of Umvuthi. I feel like the bass vocals and chants of Barako added a lot to his presence that Umvuthi seemingly lacks entirely. If we're going away from humans it would've been interesting to explore bird vocalizations. Maybe some clicking, chattering of the beak, or long winded bird callings. Bird callings like the White Bellbird might be fitting, or the Screaming Piha. Those callings are quite unique, especially the White Bellbird which sounds pretty eerie. I think it could do some good. I feel like Umvuthi has a lot more interesting excuses for new moves that Barako didn't have before either. Barako being a fat guy just sorta makes sense, but a fat bird usually isn't typical. I think it would've been interesting if Umvuthi had a bowl of seeds he constantly ate from that his tribe members provided and one of his moves was spitting molten seeds towards the player. Umvuthi could also have larger wings, which could be used in his animation of pushing the player away. Maybe he flaps a gust of wind to knock away players. I feel like Umvuthi has a lot less going for them as a character, but has a lot more potentially interesting ideas that can be explored with them that Barako would've lacked due to him just being an overweight human. Overall not bad, but was hoping for a little more.
it'd be cool if they had vocalizations that matched the bird their mask was based on tbh. it'd add a lot of variety, and they wouldn't get as annoying as the barakoa got sometimes

@@madnard8744 lol no, Barako has been around for 9 years. Whatever you're smoking you've had too much of it, or are maybe too young to even understand.
I don't understand the argument for the barakoas being racist. Their designs and inspiration have nothing to do with any depictions of African tribes or their cultures. The barakoas are just goblinoid creatures that are located in a tribal setting, it's not fair to immediately assume that they are meant to be representations of Africans. Just because they may vaguely resemble something that might appear to be a stereotype doesn't mean they themselves are meant to perpetuate or represent said stereotype. By that logic characters like knuckles the echidna from the sonic the hedgehog series should also be classified as racist since his character design has dreads that are reminiscent of a black person, furthermore knuckles is the last of his kind who were a tribe of indigenous echidnas that were located on a remote island that possesed weapons such as spears and dressed up as what you would perceive stereotypical African tribes to look like (facial paint, gold necklaces, tiki/ caveman esque attires, feathered clothing, Pygmy skin tones, ect ect). Should we throw that character, his people, and by extension many other characters across fiction away simply because they will offend a small minority of people online who don't even know anything about the backgrounds of said characters? Any sane person would automatically say no. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinions when it comes to this kind of stuff but it's clear as day that when you look at this situation through more objective lenses, the arguments for the barako and barakoas resembling any racial connotations lacks any real critical thought and falls apart once you start to assess them for what they truly are, which is just weirdos online getting offended over nothing.
Another thing I'm confused about is how is Umvuthi any better than Barako from a racism angle? The Barakoa were goblins with an African tribal motif, the Abavuthana are birds with an Aztec tribal motif. Nothing really changed. The only thing you can say about Barako is that his appearance seems to be inspired by goblins and Mayan depictions of ancient gods who most of which looked very human like with tribal masks and other tiki-like appearances, now while these would be fair comparisons I fail to see how any of these similarities are inherently racist or match up with most stereotypes of Africans. A lot of people say that Barako's design is stereotypical in nature but I honestly don't believe this to be true because almost every time I've looked up caricatures that even remotely resemble the Barakoa, almost all of them only share about 1 or 2 traits like wearing feathers or having bows or bones as weapons, ect. The Umvuthi is a completely different story though, even on surface level Umvuthi has many parallels to real life tribes such as the Aztecs with their tribal bird aesthetics and extreme worshipping of the sun. It doesn't just end at thematic similarities though since the Abavuthana all have striking resemblance to old native American and Aztec bird & mosquito masks and other parts of their cultures. The Umvuthi in particular having a very noticeable resemblance to old tribal bird masks as well as mosquito masks, which is very interesting considering a large part of the reason why Barako was deemed offensive was because of "cultural appropriation" yet the Umvuthi actually fits this term better. Hell, the Umvuthi even looks a lot like those old bird attires and costumes the native Americans used to wear due to superstitious purposes and seeing as how Umvuthi is characterized to be a monster that only exists to be killed by the player... I just can't help but thinking that it may come off as a demonization of African culture.
Personally find the bird to be a much cooler design, far more unique and the sound design of the minions are much better now too (jesus the old ones sounded annoying)
Both are great in there own way. Barako is just a good classic boss while Umvuthi is a more upgraded version. Personally I feel it would have been interesting if we had both of them. Imagine fighting Barako where after being defeated he gives one last chant before we get his mask only for Umvuthi to be summoned. It'd be this god descending from the sky "who dares end the life of my chosen" kind of deal. This way we get both and have twice the challenge.
Ngl, despite this bird dude being really cool, Barako being changed cause people whined on Twitter is beyond dumb. The idea of tribal-like Tiki monsters is something that has been used many times. How is this one offensive? Because someone got offended by it? Pretty dumb if you ask me.

There aren't really any "serious" aspects of Minecraft to begin with besides from bits of implied lore. The umvuthi and Abavuthana feel more like terraria creatures if anything which would go along with their design much better.
@@RetroMagnus761 Minecraft can be kinda serious... For starters, the art-style is kinda gritty and gloomy... The monsters somewhat erie... Then there's the passive mobs looking left and right at the same time taking the edge off and making the game silly.

I can sorta see that, but I love the mystic presence of Umvuthi. Ironically, I think I like it more because it HAS such an alien personality.
@@warriorwatch2406 I see exactly why you prefer Barakoa, and rightfully so! Personality is relatable and we innately have a connection to things with personality. the barakoa weren't even based on the natives. Mowzie based them off of mythological creatures and various other monsters in other video games that only took slight inspiration from African American tribes. That's not even mentioning how the barakoa don't even slightly match with the stereotypical depictions of native tribes at all.

I prefer barako for some reason probably because it was iconic
We need more human characters in Minecraft!!!!! Did these birds "replace" Barako and his people?!
Yes
I think that they should keep both of them. Have a competing sun worship religion thing going on.
Just make the umvuthi and Abavuthana a moon based tribe instead. Umvuthi's design would fit better with that theme anyway
People tend to picture them as an "Ancient society", but the Aztec empire acually fell in the XVI century. But certainly not tribal, they had a monarchy like most societies at the time. They were just technologically behind due to isolation from the rest of the world. But culture and politics was at quite a high level.
I'm running out of topic, the sun worship is pretty much the only thing that reminds me of the Maya or Aztecs. Nothing else really points to them
@@d4n737 They had a tribal aesthetic though, and as we know looks are the only thing that matters. Why dig deep and understand, when all you gotta do is glance at the surface. Even this is a problem that's skin deep
You hit it right on the head, anyone who is obsessed with their own righteousness is in truth profaning themselves
There’s a real difference between justice and egoism
I think we can have a middle ground between those who want barakas back and those whose doesn’t want the “racist caricature” by adding them as neutral villager
basically, they would be naturally passive, and you could trade with them for items that can’t be found somewhere else. They will only attack if you attack first, and they will defeat nearby monsters, so living with them is a valid strategy. They will be somewhat hard to kill, and you will get nothing if you kill them, so best keeping them alive and well
And like many people here said, the birds need voiceline to add to the personality
Sadly the creator (mowzie) seems far too up his own ass to do that at the moment, he won't even create texture packs to restore the original barakoas for the fans.
Baroko ARE neutral if you wearing their mask and with chief mask you can even summon them

@@RetroMagnus761 The Savannah connection is debatable, but the sun connection isn't. They are MUCH more innately connected to the sun than Barako and the Barakoa were as far as design goes.
@@warriorwatch2406 no they aren't. Making them birds doesn't automatically make them more connected to the sun.
@@RetroMagnus761 Them being birds ties them closer to the sky, but you are right, being birds doesn't inherently make them connected to the sun. But them literally having mini-suns for heads does.
@@warriorwatch2406 i guess
Umvuthi looks nice, but the belly doesn't fit, ngl. One of the commenters said that already, but it'd be interesting if there were both of them, competing for the sun
I am curious, why don't you think the (for lack of a better word) obese gimmick fits Umvuthi?
@@warriorwatch2406 well idk, it kinda just feels out of place, you know? Umvunthi already has the bird mask that turns in "unnatural" ways, the small sun(?) instead of head, it already presents itself as this mythical being, especially with its sounds, but the belly that it uses as a drum shifts the tone to silly. Sorry if i sound like a moron (its because i am), i will understand if you dont get what im trying to tell
@@toxdz_quack8466 I can understand that.
@@warriorwatch2406birds aren't usually depicted as fat
@@danielhanna19 Turkeys are almost always depicted as fat, and Umvuthi takes major design inspiration from Turkeys (particularly his tail feather orientation).
When I first saw Umvuthi I thought someone created a mod and simply copied Barako
I find it funny that it's the generic masks people took issues with and not the potbellied pygmies that look like they walked out of an old disney animation like the black slave centaur girl. Lmao.
Now if mowzie could just make the piranha plant things not spawn by the million.
Dang, didn't know you had a copypasta for it lol@@Roland...
@@Roland... I’m African and we could not give less of a shit, they don’t resemble us or any of our culture in any shape or form. And even then it’s nice seeing people take inspiration from the many different tribes on our continent and creating new designs.
@@Roland...im african and i actually would prefer barako over umvuthi
@@Roland... imo you could only see any racist caricature in them if you already have racist thoughts, they are literally mythical creatures, and to me you are a hypocrite until you tell me that Elves and Ogres are racist caricatures too
@@Roland...
Lil bro i just saw your exact comment word for word in another comment section here you lrgit just copiec and pasted it
If twitter users call you racist, just remember that they're twitter users.
I feel like the sun bird idea would work more if the bird simply wasn't a turkey, it could be some larger bird but a turkey is weird even more so with it's more sharp and evil head design, it looks regal and ancient from the neck up and dumb bellow that
people are over-nostalgic over barako but in a few months people will forget he existed
In my opinion, the old Summoners are cooler because they talk
I love how Umvuthi’s mask is evidently inspired by the appearance of a secretary bird. Very elegant and regal-looking savanna birds.
Umvuthi kinda looks like those ancient Aztec and African bird and mosquito masks now that I think about it
Umvuthi has a really cool model, but Barako has SO much character. I’m also particularly fond of his sound design.
Remember when Barako was red?
I like the little detail where the healer birds take their masks off and show that their heads really are just orbs of light.
Pues en mi opinión quedó bien entiendo que el creador fuera forzado a eliminarlo por esos ofendidos llorones pero es lo que ay
Sun cheif: *Starts speaking in unknown language*
Me: *TF YOU JUST CALL ME!?!*
Ngl, despite this bird dude being really cool, Barako being changed cause people whined on Twitter is beyond dumb. The idea of tribal-like Tiki monsters is something that has been used many times. How is this one offensive? Because someone got offended by it? Pretty dumb if you ask me.
Both are good, but i prefer the bird one for most things, but i like the chief guys death animation, with how heavy that mask feels
I hate twitter
twitter had nothing to do with the change
@@DrWise-ut7jhYes they did

Barako truly was something, really great design and sounds, But I would be lying if I said Umvuthi was incredible as well, magnificent design and sounds and animations all around.
so it’s just a remodel.
And removal of the gibberish voice lines, yes. Honestly, it’s not that big a deal. Yes they did this over Twitter being mad of all things, but it’s not like they completely wiped the characters from the mod
I wish Umvuthi was the moon god and Barako was brought back and continued to be the sun god
Old is legendary.
Old version will better
Can't help but feel umvuthi sould have a drum or something adjacent, it's weird just seeing them bang on their belly like that
pisses me off that they had to change barako because people crying about being it racist.
but honestly I love Umvuthi
I liked the Barako, should've kept them in like an easter egg or reskin.
Saying the barakoa are "racist" is like saying villagers are racist since they slightly resemble bad caricatures of jewish people with their abnormally large noses. Are we gonna remove them from the game too and blast Mojang on Twitter for using "racist stereotypes"?
I’m incredibly intrigued by the new change actually, it’s incredibly welcome and much more respectful :) Umvuthi is a very nice change and I love it a lot more than Barako! The design is very unique, 10/10
Barako is the OG
the head going upside down and splitting open for the laser attack is just so cool
Damn, Umvuthi's beatboxing, but i still prefer Barako...
Can Umvuthi juju on that beat tho?
barako was peak, but umvuthi is creepy and i love it
Barako is better
Yes!!! 👍
