I like the hemp vs cotton/soy issues raised in the comments....I came across this video while researching textile recycling...this is an excellent update regarding the near total demise of the Aral Sea. I especially appreciate that it's done by locals in their own language! Great post! Thank you ToprakSuEnerji.
Can anyone tell me the name of the song/music sang by that woman in this video please? I found it a beautiful song and melody. Please name of singer, name of song! Is it Turkish or Kazakh song? Thanks, Eli, New Zealand.
Tragic. If all these countries don't band together to fix this issue it will come back to bite them all. The rest of the world should a lesson. I hope they can save the south Aral too and slowly bring the entire Aral Sea back. It will be hard but they must start somewhere. All the best.
I don't think Mankind has forgotten our Ecosystem, it's the leaders of a country that don't care. THe leaders can get water from anywhere, or just leave the area.
I want to see Aral as a natural preserve twice more than initial coast line and full of endemic bio resources to 2050. This will be a true act of goodness and creation. Let's be wise and save the Earth together! I want to believe in it.
North part of lake more like fresh water near river source. South part mostly large evaporation basin and would be saltier if more water became available. It is good news that some of the lake producing fish again. Aral Sea likely never return to full size but baby step improvements still possible if marginal land taken out of production and water waste in irrigation managed properly.
I can't disagree, but back then, no government took the slightest interest in the environment, and many still don't. The blame game isn't the answer, but there seems to be a lot of it still going on. Regardless of who was at fault, they now need to put that to rest & do something about it, in equal measure. They now have the knowledge about the cause and effect which wasn't known back then, they also have the answer to the problem, and need to act on it.
For those who want to learn more: For the past 2+ years, our team have been working on a documentary series exploring the past, present, and future of the Aral Sea. The trailer has just gone live on our channel! 🙏
Apparently the u.s.s.r. built the irrigation structures but the people in charge after they left let the structures in place to prevent this from happening fail, and look what happened. Of course they maintained the irrigation to the point that it still produced crops but failed to maintain the portions that replaced the water heading to the sea. Yeah the Soviet Union built the irrigation canals, but are not to blame for the sea drying up, as the structures continued to replenish the sea for almost 50 years.
We must all remember how long it took too get to this point, its going to take just as long to get back. If it can happen quicker it would but lets be realistic. Time is our friend in this case, just stick to reality. This will happen but not overnight.
It occurred to me that Nikita Khrushchev was the man in charge back then (Not being born until 1969, my history isn't so quick on the recall the era.) Stalin died in March 1953. Either way, this is a result of Big Government, regardless of what one chooses to call it.
Hate goo gle This country seceded from the u.s.s.r. After they had solved a problem for them. After the secession the governing party allowed the infrastructure to fail. Keep in mind that what the ruskies did worked for decades before it finally began to fail due to neglect. The sea did not start to receed until the 1980's.
The Salton Sea and the Aral sea are both similar in that they are both natural ancient lakes that dried up. The current water surface level of the Salton sea is about 233 ft. Below sea level. The Sea of Cortes that is between Baja Mexico and the mainland would naturally extend all the way in to the Salton sea if the sea levels would rise because but there is a high bump of land that keeps the Sea of Cortes from filling in the Salton Sea. If they wanted it full they could just dig a ditch and it would fill up quickly but with evaporation and continual salt water from the oceans pouring in it would get even more salty and unusable for anything. We often hear that the Salton sea was created by accident. Which is partially true. It is a natural lake already but it dried up leaving a crusty layer of salt in the desert but when a levee transporting water from the Colorado river was broken it filled up the old lake bed and it has stayed wet since. If it were at its former level it would be a massive lake extending from palm springs to Mexico.
This "fix" is really-very simple! Grow HEMP on 1/2 of the area that grows cotton presently.& let the remainder, not be irrigated.& use hemp to Replace cotton. Hemp Cloth,is claimed to last up to-17 times longer than cotton.& acre for acre; hemp produces Vastly more "value", In tonnage, & seed stock-for the same water,& land use & Hemp seeds when Pressed, can be used 2 fuel diesel engines, & the Pulp left is totally edible, & Far better than soy for humans to Eat! Please, research it yourself!
You surely can't seriously believe that? Water can only be displaced, it doesn't disappear. So, you may gain some highly polluted, and useless, land where the Aral was, but elsewhere, perfectly good land will be lost. That sounds like a losing situation all round. That doesn't include the knock-on effects on the eco-system, and population, over a huge area. It's been done, and that's a sad thing, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't try to turn it around to the best of their ability.
Really the only way to save the Aral Sea is to stop the excessive farming. That will be drastic and rather risky as hell. The northern part should be stable, at least, but the rest is as good as dead. Looks like snowmelt is the only water it will get
This is truly regretful... such a catastrophe just for not knowing how to properly use the available natural resources, Thankfully the north countries are aware of the lake's importance for a balanced ecosystem and have started to do their best to fillup the lake. Now all that is left is for the south countries to do their part and not continue to live as if nothing could be done. They need to start caring about this lake.
The disappearance of the Aral sea can be seen as a good thing. The Earth is over 70% water already. This particular even gives us slightly more LAND we can utilize for farming/housing/projects.
Kaydi Samuel after the huge inefficiencies in the irrigation systems are repaired, then that water must be diverted back to the sea, first educate the farmers about water conservation practices involving irrigation, second allocate water shares to each individual farm in such a manner as to: 1. Not undermine the agricultural industry. 2. Not under supply the drinking water supply. 3 Allow for replenishment water to return to the sea. It could take as much as a century.
Sorry, but the Salton Sea was *created* by agriculture diversion. The Aral Sea was *destroyed* by agriculture diversion. At this point, what they need to do is divert the 'Ob River down to refill the Aral Sea.
Hold on there!- ...Go Back to the Hemp....study it...i am not debating your concepts of- morality. The areal sea... was dried up mainly because of The irrigation Practices of fields...Mostly-COTTON production. & cotton is like soy, Fertilizer intensive-& a poor use of Millions of acres of the worlds farmlands. a better use is hemp...It could replace BOTH soy and cotton ...study it& if you don...t those who read this useless debate with you -probably will. Thanks for helping me to spread the word!
the best Aral Sea documentary i have ever seen!
Thank you

Soviets have plenty of stupid ideas, but Aral Sea is their masterpiece

The Salton Sea is a completely different story. It was created my mistake in the early 1900s I believe.
The Salton Sea and the Aral sea are both similar in that they are both natural ancient lakes that dried up. The current water surface level of the Salton sea is about 233 ft. Below sea level. Guided Meditation
The aral never naturally dried up at all.
The Russians unnaturally dried it up
All that "singing" made following the commentary difficult.
ten years have been passing by. I would say, that the Aral Sea will disappear nearly completely during the next 20-30 years.
