A previous teacher of mine put it best, drawing faces is psychologically difficult, but drawing hands is technically difficult, and hands are probably one of the the hardest things to draw. Hands are very detailed. Their structure of bones and muscles is complex. They're made of many small forms with very specific proportions and angles. They're more malleable than any other part of the body, yet they're complex structure is still visible. Finally, we use them for communication, which means we're highly visually wired to notice when they don't look quite right.

+xenophanesiamnot I never thought of how we notice them due to their use in communication! :O
Now it makes a lot more sense on why a poorly drawn hand is one of the easiest things to notice on an illustration of a person.

Phantomhive Indeed! Problems with hands also tend to be more difficult to fix than problems with faces, at least in my experience.

Its very easy to get caught up in the TH-cam "antics" of some people...they're quick and easy to criticize from behind the keyboard, even from an artist who may be more talented than yourself and question your instruction (you mentioned it at 23:25 ) but Sycra, you have no reason to feel insecure about your instructions. For starters you're incredibly talented and experienced at what you do but not only that, you selflessly (or at least that's how I see it) give your technique, wisdom and your own experiences away freely. I cant tell you how reinvigorated I've become about drawing again from watching your videos. Thank you, thank you for sharing....let the haters hate, cause they gonna do it anyways ! Cheers !!

I like slender fingers but i got short sausages so I cringe when people say use your hand to reference. However. STORY TIME:
In art class my teacher assigned us to draw our hands. I did. She called me and was explaining how the thumb by natural design ends in the middle of the first and second knuckle - mine was short that i drew (ending at the start of the first knuckle). She asked me to look at my hand in front of her and I did - only to discover my thumb was exactly as I drew it. She stopped talking and stared at it. I asked for extra points because I drew what I saw and was rejected hahahahaha Told I should learn what is right hahahahaa

I found this really useful, I especially like how you show multiple ways and in multiple directions, because I've also found that that's what you sort of need to do. In other how to draw hands videos it never really covers more than the basic construction of a hand but that construction on the hand changes depending on what the hand is doing, of course all the same features are there but can be depicted completely differently and I feel you covered this very well, thank you.

If there is one thing I'm good in, it's drawing hands. Probably because I can use them quickly as reference. BUT I still find this tutorial SO helpful! It's so much easier and especially quicker this way, I can't believe it. I don't like the often taught 'block' technique, my hands always looked really stiff and it took a long time whenever I tried that approach but your kind of outline is so easy to use. And they look elegant, so damn elegant. I wish other body parts where just as easy to draw.

Thank you so much for this. I've been looking all over for a good hand tutorial. All of them seem good like Proko's and other drawing books by people like Andrew Loomis. But as you said it's a guideline and what they say makes sense to me but I just have lots of trouble putting it into practice. I think doing it over and over is great because at the very least, you're getting more comfortable drawing a basic shape or outline of the hand which can stack up to hundreds at the end of the day. Whereas when using photo reference I'm sitting there a long time analyzing.

I always had problems with hands, hated drawing these, and I always thought that those tutorials where u draw a circle or something else than each finger as one specific line isnt helping me. Like it was more difficult, and they only show u the basics (like from above or smth) but they never gave examples with other positions. so I really like dis tutorial which helped me a lot already.

I bought an a5 sketch pad with like 400 pages. 300 of those pages are just hands XD, and ive still got a ways to go. A lot of your advice is very good and I will try implement it. I especially like how you create a circle of negative space joining the thumb and the wrist. Also you made me realise that your forefinger and thumb both are seperate from alignment with your wrist. Like, if you follow the line of your wrist up to the fingers it meets with the middle finger, which I think will be a huge help!! thanks a lot for the video !!

19:07 that is such a classic comic book superhero shape, anytime a character is floating/doing a power stance, at least one hand is making that fist, with the dramatically protruding thumb knuckle. I can picture Jean Grey doing that right now, even Spider-Man several times (with his mask clenched in the other hand).

I struggled for years with hands, then I started just doing this about a year ago. I just always start with a mitten in the shape I am looking for to guide me, and it became significantly easier, no more weird hands.

Most of the hand tutorials i see rely too much on skeletons and dull poses that end up not helping much. This video, on the other hand(no pun intended) shows the actual process of drawing hands and it seeing it really makes a difference. Thank you very much and keep up the good work!
