I came to Steve Vai back in the 80's from his work with DLR, and that Whitesnake album. Then I learned then that he and Joe Satriani were friends and that Steve had been his student, and I was hooked! Between Satch's Surfing with the Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream and Vai's Passion and Warfare, that was the instrumental rock soundtrack of high school for me!

For me it was this buzz around him, because his name kept popping up everywhere. Then I saw Crossroads, which made one hell of an impression.
But at the times the dots did not connect. Until I saw a 2 page Ibanez ad in Guitar Player magazine featuring Vai. 😁

I used to walk home after highschool. It was a 5 mile walk, during twilight, every single day. I'd put on my discman, insert this pink gem called Passion and Warfare and go into another dimension (literally) while walking. I was so entranced by this force of nature that I'm surprised how I never got run over during those walks.
To this day I have not encountered a deeper, more personal work on guitar.

The first time I heard Steve Vai was probably 1991. I had just gotten sober and was with my sponsor, we had left a meeting and he put in Love and Warfare. He said “This will blow your mind.” He had a kick ass stereo in his old F150 and he played For The Love of God at a ten. He was right, it blew my mind. Amazing.

Hey Prof. I don't know if you read new comments on older videos, but I hope you see this affirmation of you. This was another example of something I repeatedly notice about you. You often speak words and ask questions that delight the musicians we all cherish. The look of amusement, joy, or pride you cause them is gratifying to witness. We all imagine what we would say to those larger than life who emotionally touched us via their music, and here you are speaking on behalf of us. You do it so well. We would all do well to speak to our spouses, children, family, bosses, colleagues, or friends the way you speak.

It's so cool, listening to your explanation of what "music could be", and how it "opened a trap door" - that is exactly what I felt listening to his music at that time as well. Opened a world of Satriani, and Johnson, not to mention enhanced the appreciation of Clapton, Buckingham, etc. EVH started my love for electric guitar virtuoso - but Vai pushed it to the next step. I hope Steve understands how his talents and gifts helped shape so many young people's lives. Thank you Steve for sharing your gifts with us, and as always - great interview PoR!

Passion & Warfare is one of the greatest instrumental rock albums ever made.
When DLR went solo and did his thing I didn't really care that much, but I did take serious notice of his new guitar player. I paid attention to Vai during that time even though I wasn't a fan of the artists he was associated with. But once he put out that solo album I was hooked! I still listen to those songs on a regular basis. And I love how you singled out Love Secrets to talk about because that's one of the best ones. And I am very pleased to hear it from his lips that that song is a defining piece for him. I always felt I related to him on an essential level and that kind of confirms it.
Also, he saved my life once. I was on the brink of suicide and then I saw him perform live on his Fire Garden tour and his energy completely turned me around. I hope I get to thank him in person someday.

Bravo! Been a Steve Vai fan for many decades! Going back to when he was a part of Frank Zappa's touring band. His solo work is beyond great! Hearing him play on David Lee Roth's solo album showcased his gift. I even liked the stuff he did with Whitesnake. People often forget the stuff this guy has had his hands in musically. Steve played guitar on Alice Cooper's 1991 hit single "Feed My Frankenstein". He co-wrote a song with Ozzy Osbourne called "My Little Man". But to some people's surprise he has also played on albums by artists such as Meat Loaf, Joe Jackson, Motorhead, Dream Theater....... A true highlight was seeing Joe on tour as G3! That was Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson all on the same stage rocking! Heck, they had Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Adrian Legg opening for them!! Now that was a show.
"Passion and Warfare" was one of those albums I ran out and bought after seeing the music video for "The Audience Is Listening". So glad I did! Thanks for bringing back such great memories Professor!

Near the end of my freshman year of college, I participated in a fellow student's project regarding music. I don't remember exactly what it was for (been close to 30 years ago), but it dealt with 3 different genres of music, 1 song from each. One of the songs was "Erotic Nightmares". And I was blown away. I asked him to lend me the tape (back when tapes were still in vogue). And I loved it. Then I bought it. And when I got a CD player, I bought the CD. I also got introduced to Satriani and Blues Traveler that year, and I began to appreciate metal. It was a time of learning--and not just from books.

Great video. Something I've always wondered about with Vai is where "Call it Sleep" off of Flexable came from. His mastery of the whammy bar is insane on this track. This track opened my eyes to the fact that the vibrato bar can be musical and incorporated into the song and not just an atmospheric effect or a trick fill. I'd love to know the story behind that track and how long it took him to develop the control he has over his Floyd Rose. An amazing track.

Eat em and Smile is my favorite Steve Vai record. I love that album and listen to it regularly. To me it's a masterpiece. "Big Trouble" is my absolute favorite Steve Vai song. For his solo stuff "Erotic Nightmare" is my favorite and Passion and Warfare is a masterpiece as well. Flexible is another incredible record. Steve's early work is other wordly good. Crossroads is one of my favorite all time movies as well. From the early 80s to early 90s Steve was the best guitarist in the world in my book. His work definitely stands the test of time and has aged like wine. Alcatrazz and Zappa stuff I love as well. Hell even the Deven Townsend Vai band was a cool experiment. Steve had one of the most incredible stretch's of 10 years everything he did was untouchable

That record and Surfing With the Alien from Joe Satriani, that came out a couple of years before, were really a reassuring statement that instrumental music could be just as great as music with vocals. It really opened a whole can of worms in my head at the time. And I never looked back!

April 21 2000 was an unforgetable day for me as a 15yo boy from Istanbul, possessed by guitar-fever.
Poor David Copperfield, for his 'magic' earlier on November 1999 was outdone just after a couple of months, by a legendary man with a guitar named Steve Vai & his incredible band of Philip Bynoe, Mike Mangini (hilariously, in a mawashi), Mike Keneally (great job keeping up with a wild Vai... still unsure if he had just 2 hands, disguised twins maybe, idk) and Dave Weiner.
2.5 hours of solid gold entertainment, on the final show of a world tour. No magic involved but it totally felt like it. :)
Thank you Mr. Vai for inspiring generations with your music and modesty.
