it is... have you checked out Modern Primitive?? Super rad. I dig it. "No Pockets" is such a great groove, and "pink and blows over", is odd and amazingly beautiful.. Those are my current favs on that one.
I got this in CD in 1990. Playing it heavily for over 20 years.. This is VAIs Dark side of the moon. The impact on the guitar players was stellar. How there isn't a VH1 documentary is beyond me.
When 'Passion and Warfare' finally dropped in Apartheid South Africa I was an isolated teenage guitarist trying to figure shit out. You could just as well had me be kidnapped by an alien...it was life changing. I could not wrap my head around the mastery of Steve's work and it felt impossible. The most valuable lesson I got from that album was that I needed to sound like me and become a great composer. This album will remain one of the most influential albums in rock instrumental history.
My dad hated when I listened to this album. He said the music made him paranoid. I would crank when the guitar started in Audience is Listening. I could hear him come running up the steps and he'd be yelling for me to turn it down. My dad said the guitar didn't sound unnatural. I would say it sounded cool. My dad was horrified when I bought a half stack after learning on an acoustic guitar. After I got an Ibanez with a Floyd Rose he really lost his mind. My mom didn't seemed bothered by it.
It’s too bad there hasn’t been a documentary released of the making of this album. That album will remain a treasure for years and years to come. That album was my guiding light when I was a teenager.
Absolutely. Hearing this record for the first time is a definite spot in my memory where I see there being a clear before:after in terms of my thinking, focus, and perception of “possible.” Where music is concerned, at least. I’d kill to watch a feature doc on P&W. Clearly, I’m not the only one.
I'm 53 and remember getting it on cassette and meeting him on Long Island at the listening party. I still break it out sometime and the record is timeless.
I remember picking this up out of a box of tapes my uncle had in a shed. I picked it out based on the cover. I was 13 then and it changed me. 43 now and still listening.
I was about 11 or 12 when I bought this album and it just flew over my head. I couldn't grasp the complexity and eclectic nature of this brilliant work. Coming off the more conventional satriani, vai was unlike anyone I'd ever heard. Of course, over the years, my appreciation for this has grown in leaps and bounds. Still my fav vai album ever.
When I first listened to Passion and Warfare it scared and amazed me, i couldn’t believe how creative and interesting it was with things played on guitar that where unconceivable.. I’ll die a fan of this album...
God that's incredible to know he made this album without and outside incentive to do so. No record label, no money and it's one of the best guitar albums of all time in my eyes! It was an album I grew up listening to and know every note of. What an inspiration, when I myself am about to record a new album without a record label either! Just make the music and things will happen.
OMG ...had this on tape walkman on holiday...played it for hours everyday , looking out on landscapes and dreaming from a car window. Couldn't believe where this album took me. And here you see the graft , the hard, frustrating hours and weeks behind that bliss. We are so grateful you stuck at it Steve. Thank you.
I used to play this full volume in my bedroom to drown out my annoying neighbors that made too much noise, so I could get my sleep. I used to love sleeping in till whenever! Worked like a charm.
This album somehow allows access to pure emotion, it essentially enters via a back door in perception and connects with you and allows emotions to exit. So deep and intuitive, and mysterious, even to this day.
Steve Vai was the first concert that I ever saw. That is a feeling and a memory that will stay with you forever. He was with DLR in the Skyscraper tour and they came to Shreveport LA. I was 13 and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was on the floor about 10 feet from the stage and it was fucking awesome. I vividly remember the triple neck heart guitar. He is an amazing individual and of course when Passion and Warfare came out it solidified him in the status of guitar god whether he wanted that or not. Genius cant stay hidden for long. Thanks Steve for that amazing memory and of course a big hats off to the 25th anniversary of PaW. Damn I feel old....... :D
I have read many comments: ..."changed my life"...(of course mine too) Changed life of many people, professionals and guitar fans. Changed the history and concept of guitar, of jazz and rock and roll. Changed the history of music ...for better. God bless Steve Vai!
I remember when Passion and Warfare came out. I bought it just before my highschool graduation. Having already owned Flex-able and all the David Lee Roth albums too. Passion and Warfare was epic, the first BIG release from Steve Vai. Hence more time, effort and budget to showcase the real artist. Completely on a OMG level. Thank you Mr. Vai.😀
In 1991 I won a raffle and the prize was an Ibanez UV7 and a lesson with Steve Vai. It wasn't until 1992 that the lesson actually happened but I remember thinking, "I need to buy and familiarize myself with his most recent album just in case it comes up in concert at ion or whatever". So I went out and bought Passion and Warfare and listened to it virtually non stop for weeks. I remember being overwhelmed by the music because there was just SO many things in each song to listen to and take in. Passion and Warfare became (and still is) my all-time favorite instrumental guitar album. Even today, when I listen to it with headphones, I still hear things that I either never heard before or had forgotten about. I like to close my eyes as I listen and I can almost "see" the music in three dimensions. Amazing!
Passion and Warfare was the first CD I ever got, aged 17, and I remember waiting weeks for it to arrive at the small music/bookshop in my small country town in the UK, and when it did, wow, every track was so awesome in its own way...thanks so much for being part of my musical education!
3:11 very true, very honest. You inspired me a lot, when i was a kid i used to sleep listening to this album. Still today, i'm an electro artist, i play less guitar. But what you feel, what you are, is universal as an inspiration for every kind of musicians, hell, make it every kind of humans. Great man, great artist. Thank you Mr Vai.
I don’t make this kind of music but Steve is such a huge inspiration to me. The way he speaks about music and approaches it, without ego and just free, trying to get the sounds in his head down on to tape, even if no one ever hears it. How can you not be inspired by that?!
Just loved the song writing on Crystal Planet. House Full of Bullets is blues rock though bro. You cant get a much bluesier riff than that. And I don't think Flying in a Blue Dream has a ballad on it that quite matches the passion of Love Thing. Love Thing is a stunning song. Plus I'm not slating him for trying but I'm not a fan of his singing so I prefer his Instrumental stuff, Flying is still a class album though but for me it's no better that The Extremist and it's no Crystal Planet JMO.
That album is a true masterpiece, it reignited my love for guitar. I have spent many hours over the years trying to learn some of songs but have come to the conclusion that i will probably never be able to play those lines, Steve is truly gifted, I know he put in the work but is gifted. Having said that my playing has. still improved from trying to learn this music and it also introduced me to using modes. Thank you Steve Vai.
This album is a major part of our Bible. It's a must have and everyone I know or have known that plays knows it. You are the only guitarist that has the ability to actually surprise me. Thanks for all you have shared with us!!!!!❤
Day of release. I remember being 15 and bunking school after lunch break to go to the local HMV and use their own headphones for this moment in history. Priceless.
Masterpiece of an album. I remember getting this on cassette back in 1991 and listening to it. Brings back memories of college, and riding my bike along the levee listening to this. Now I live in Asia and I just gave a class to my students about this album. Most had never heard about Vai, let alone this album. They loved it, and I hope that one of them becomes inspired and maybe, just maybe, will pick up the torch and carry it into the darkness.
Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, John McLaughlin should be in every serious guitar players curriculum. These are the masters.....practice, practice, practice......
Mr Vai, I hope you read this. I think I now finally understand. The album is really the epitome of human spirit, honesty, creativity and peace. When a human can intellectually challenge themselves for their own development and pleasure and it has the above elements you achieve greatness. Very inspiring.
Passion and Warfare was Steve’s lifetime masterpiece! I remember how blown away I was the day I bought it! It was like Frank Zappa on steroids! Incredible solo Album that will never be surpassed. Even Steve himself hasn’t out done it!
There is still a part of your voice in mine. And that album was a serious foundation block. And low and behold, after having several custom guitars made, I ended up with a Jem. Talk about full circle. I love you man. You alien, you.
@Ryannewen _ I own one. They are really amazing guitars. I will never part with mine and it is in near perfect condition. 'Oh the sound of these things...!
Mr. Vai, my band ( a couple of kids in high school) and I are very inspired by your creativity and inventiveness ( if that is a word). Thank you, Mr Vai, you have inspired the next generation of kids (including myself) and we are all very appreciative of the music you given us, again, Thank you Mr. Steve Vai
My favorite instrumental recordings. I listen to this album frequently. I'm a bass player and who went out and got me a Jem! It took me a minute but I love my guitar. Thanks for sharing yourself with us. Much love Bro
I remember buying this CD and wearing it out. I truly heard this amazing work of art as an eye opening experience and I absolutely loved it. Would love to meet Steve. He seems like such a down to earth man. Amazing Amazing Amazing
Amazing album from an amazing player. When it was released I was 13 years old and I remember well going to the record shop with a friend of mine because he was buying it. We spent hours listening to it. It really changed my life.
I still remember buying Passion and Warfare on cassette and being blown away, listening to that thing until I wore it out. Was happy to hear a short time later you were playing for Whitesnake, so made sure to see you guys play while in Baltimore.
1989 i was 14 years and this album was not released. When i saw this video for the first time ( there 4 or 5 years i was 41 years, and i realized how you had influence me as being. i was sitting in my own studio…Thank's for all ,and show us a way to work good things! grea
If my cousin would've never showed me this back in 92 i would've never picked up a guitar.. Thank you so much ..i still listen to P&W till this day and passing it down to my 5 yr old
Dear Steve, I have been a fan of your music since your time with Frank and all points in between then and now. Passion is one of my favorite recordings ever. I really think Flexible, Sex and Religion, and Fire Garden are also at the top of that list. I just wanted to say thank so much for your gift and for sharing it with all of us. I am humbled and inspired by you as a guitarist, a composer and most of all, as a human being. Peace & Love Steve. May your internal light shine eternally
I can't begin to tell you how much Passion and Warfare means to me. It's one of the reasons (alongside my father, my brother, "Ah Via Musicom" and "The Extremist") I started playing guitar. I'm so very grateful for this most amazing masterpiece and I'm glad we all get to enjoy the remaster. WELL DONE, SIR!!!
Oh Yeah, this WOWED me, just like the first Montrose album and the1st Van Halen and The 1st Yngwie Malmsteen. I love Alien love Secrets, The Ultra Zone too.
Such an extraordinary album. This album reminds me of my brother, who passed away in 2015. He introduced me to the guitar and this album, in the early 90s. So I got a vai symbol tattoo in memory of my brother! I did a meet&greet with Steve in Wellington, a very cool, funny guy. Got to hold, and even have a little play on flo. Looking forward to your next trip to New Zealand, will definitely go
I purchased that album when it was released, it really blew my mind. Now seeing how Steve got so involved and obsessed with perfection, makes me admire him even more. He´s a genius, he made a masterpiece so far from reach to high level musicians, he´s so sensitive and expressive.. When I want to enjoy guitar perfection, or show my kids an example of what a guitar can express I always think of Blue Powder. Special mention to the bass and drums work. Perfect combination of virtuosity.
This piece of incredible work will never be topped. It can't be, there will be things that are different but they cannot advance beyond this level because the human brain is at its max taking in this music. Steve caught the exact right balance here. It is a hairs width away from overload but works perfectly.
This video is wonderful. It's amazing to see the moments when this album came together, but at the same time it's inspirational. Not to mention Steve's studio beard. :-) Thanks for sharing this.
I still own my Floral Gem from the 80s. It is still in near perfect condition and the trem still works flawlessly giving very long warbles and stays solid in tune. The PUs have faded in colour a little but there are no dings and just a few light marks. I will never sell her because she sounds utterly stunning with a low growl and beautiful mids. I just put them to my ear and listen for that growl when played unplugged. Most Ibanez guitars just don't have that sound. I am trying the Mad Hatter electronics soon as they make a Steve Vai config that he likes and the improvement in tone will be dramatic. I haven't fitted it yet but I have A/B tested another guitar and it really does sound better. If you ever have the opportunity to own an original Floral Gem in good condition I say go for it...you won't be disappointed and they hold their prices.
Thanks so much for posting. This footage is gold. This album was on such high rotation in my young teenage life... Great to be a fly on the wall watching its conception....feels so surreal.
Ok, I'm holding tears right now. I shouldn't be watching this but I'm waiting for something to finish at work. What you said, that's what being present is, isn't?
This album influenced my playing in a major way! His phasing and whammy bar! His subtle key changes! His playing took my playing in a whole different direction! thank You Steve!
I can't describe the first time I heard this album, all those years ago. I don't even remember how I knew the name Steve Vai. I was a sophomore in high school and I LOVED the bands of the day. Metallica, Anthrax, G n R, White Snake, White Lion, Motley Crüe. I played all their songs on guitar.
I borrowed this album on cassette (young people, ask your parents about them) from my Sgt during Desert Storm so often that when it was over, he gave it to me. Thank you Kalen and thank you Steve Vai. This album started a love affair with the guitar that has lasted all of these years. A truly gifted and spiritual man who I had the honor to see in Salt Lake City some years ago. Simply Brilliant.
One of the greatest instrumental albums of all time (period).
it is... have you checked out Modern Primitive?? Super rad. I dig it. "No Pockets" is such a great groove, and "pink and blows over", is odd and amazingly beautiful.. Those are my current favs on that one.
This and Alien Love Secrets
Other than me at the skin flute!!!!
not one of...the greatest.
I put this up there with Liquid Tension 1
I got this in CD in 1990. Playing it heavily for over 20 years.. This is VAIs Dark side of the moon. The impact on the guitar players was stellar. How there isn't a VH1 documentary is beyond me.
It’s definitely Vai’s Dark Side of The Moon, a truly incredible piece of work, and since then his records have never disappointed.
A spiritual record unmatched
I can spend entire days watching this stuff. Please Mr Vai I need more!!
yes more footage!
Took the words right out of my mouth friend, thanks! We NEED more Vai-ness
Exactly! He needs to release a full length video of this entire recording session :) or better yet...every recording session he has done on video! lol
Scott McClure Hey Scott, by the way, Mr. Vai signed my 1990 Universe ;)
Electric Sitar

Hey are you that kid from the Black or White music video?
@@MyGroo I'm the guy from that thing, you know.
I got my first Floyd rose at about this time only to find my Latin jazz and funk background.. I didn’t really need one
This is what you get when you make music for love not for money. A timeless masterpiece.
The thing I love about Steve is that he is so unique, not just in his playing but in his mastery of tone and effects. The complete rock guitarist.
It’s too bad there hasn’t been a documentary released of the making of this album. That album will remain a treasure for years and years to come.
That album was my guiding light when I was a teenager.
Same.
Absolutely. Hearing this record for the first time is a definite spot in my memory where I see there being a clear before:after in terms of my thinking, focus, and perception of “possible.” Where music is concerned, at least.
I’d kill to watch a feature doc on P&W. Clearly, I’m not the only one.
I remember when I bought this on cassette. I was 20. I'm 45 now. it is still one of my favorite albums ever.
I'm 53 and remember getting it on cassette and meeting him on Long Island at the listening party. I still break it out sometime and the record is timeless.

Still remember the feeling of hearing this album for the first time ! It sounded like magic then and still sounds like magic🎸🌟.
His greatest album and one of the best rock instrumental albums ever created.
thank you for this awesome footage!

FANTASTIC STEVE!!!
I heard it Steve, and I liked it.
My son had a white Ibanez bass; he introduced me to your's, Satriani's, and Malmsteen's music. His name was Steve.
I still think this is one of the best electric guitar albums ever made.
Steve Vai one of THE most creative and still relevant guitar players today!
When I first listened to Passion and Warfare it scared and amazed me, i couldn’t believe how creative and interesting it was with things played on guitar that where unconceivable.. I’ll die a fan of this album...
Still one of my all time favorite albums! Timeless music. Thank you 🙏 Mr. Vai.
A piece of history of one of the most influencial guitar albums ever made... right in front of your eyes. Priceless.
Thank you.
This CD is still a pearl in my collection. What a masterpiece!
I used to play this full volume in my bedroom to drown out my annoying neighbors that made too much noise, so I could get my sleep. I used to love sleeping in till whenever! Worked like a charm.
This video could be 54548949446446 hours long and i'd still rewatch it over and over...
This album somehow allows access to pure emotion, it essentially enters via a back door in perception and connects with you and allows emotions to exit. So deep and intuitive, and mysterious, even to this day.
A life changing album, just perfect. Thank you for that Mr. Steve Vai
Steve Vai was the first concert that I ever saw. That is a feeling and a memory that will stay with you forever. He was with DLR in the Skyscraper tour and they came to Shreveport LA. Thanks Steve for that amazing memory and of course a big hats off to the 25th anniversary of PaW. Damn I feel old....... :D
You could actually tell that Steve was so into his music and recording... that he didn´t even eat... What an incredible human being...
I have read many comments: ..."changed my life"...(of course mine too)
Changed life of many people, professionals and guitar fans.
Vai.😀

Passion and warfare and flying in a blue dream . There best work imo !
+Ibanezguitars also love vinnie Moore . 80's were great
Passion and Warfare 100% but for Satch it's Crystal Planet for me.
+TheRockstarnumber1 crystal planet was rock but flying was more versatile blues rock funk it had had everything
Just loved the song writing on Crystal Planet. House Full of Bullets is blues rock though bro. You cant get a much bluesier riff than that. Flying In A Blue Dream. Wow, I remember it like it was yesterday :)
This album is the biggest single influence on me as a musician. Thank you Steve.
Passion and warfare and Surfing With the Alien in my mind are the best two guitar albums ever!!!
I absolutely devoured this album when it came out, must have listened to it a hundred times. Absolutely incredible
I was in my early twenties when this album came out. I've never been the same since. Thank you Mr. Vai :) This footage is amazing!
That album is a true masterpiece, it reignited my love for guitar. With all that gear in there, the most amazing thing can only be owned by Steve. His talent.
This album will still be played in 2981
absoluttchamp even better: 2990
Even better 1036597
Love the old footage Vai creating his iconic album, right here is why Steve was a real hero to me.
Steve is the best to ever pick it up. My absolute hero

His song "Lucky Charms always makes me laugh!
this album is "the dark side of the moon" of the guitars. so creative.
Many would say that “Dark Side Of The Moon” is the Dark Side of The Moon of guitar, but I agree.
Thanks Steve. I'm grateful you got this all on tape. And on video. It's gold.
Perfect combination of virtuosity.
he seems so down to earth. he has a good attitude about everything
Nice to see some bits of Ballerina played live! Damn Steve, this album is mythical.
Amazing. I wouldn't mind paying to see more of this footage. Magical album and era.
This piece of incredible work will never be topped. It can't be, there will be things that are different but they cannot advance beyond this level because the human brain is at its max taking in this music. Steve caught the exact right balance here. It is a hairs width away from overload but works perfectly.
Oh. Those days.... I still a fan only because of those glorious days.
an incredible album, I remember when it came out & it was a a big influence.
I have P&W on vinyl. It's a piece of treasure. Greatest instrumental offering of my generation. True art.
Please please please more footage, this album changed my entire life and watching how it was made is truly awesome!!
So happy to have been able to see you on this tour and front row...
Man, I’ll never forget VAI teaching me that the guitar doesn’t have to sound like a guitar. 💯
This video is wonderful. It's amazing to see the moments when this album came together, but at the same time it's inspirational. Not to mention Steve's studio beard. :-) Thanks for sharing this.
Had passion and warfare since its release one of the greatest albums of all time so underrated it gets a weekly listen to this day
Underrated ?? Really ?
Thank you Steve Vai! God bless you, much love and respect.
An inspiring video
This record changed my life - and still does ! So moving to watch this ! Thanks a lot !
Thanks for producing the best album in the century!
a true classic that endure the test of time!
and for many years to come.
Thanks so much for posting. This footage is gold. This album was on such high rotation in my young teenage life... Great to be a fly on the wall watching its conception....feels so surreal.
God bless you, sir. Amazing album.
This is really one of the cooler videos I've personally seen regarding the making of this album. So awesome
