Regarding getting stuck; Great job at stopping yourself from digging in deeper! That saved you. It would be a good idea to learn how to use the 4x4, and carry some offroad traction boards in case you get stuck in the future and nobody is around to help.

To add to your spot on advice, if you don't already you should carry an air compressor. You could have let some air out of the rear tires which may have helped, then put refill your tires once you're back on solid ground. Another thing, I am pretty sure your truck has crawl control. It would have got you out of that predicament very easily.

I wonder about that. Camper seems to be a well behaved dog with out problems. it does seem odd that he would be abandoned like that. He is healthy, loyal, good looking, no defective limbs or anything sickly about him. he is not aggressive or a Pitbull type dog. He seems like the last dog you would find abandoned. Really strange circumstances. If Camper was my dog and went missing, I would be pretty extreme in trying to get him back.

I have a pup who is a dead ringer for Camper. When we adopted her, we were told was rescued when she was turned in with the rest of her litter at a spay/neuter event in the 4 Corners area (southwest US). She is extremely smart, calm (except for her big bark when certain dogs/people pass our windows/fence), affectionate, and a major people-pleaser (aka biddable - we've never even had to bribe her with treats during training, she just wants is to make us happy and get snuggles). You can't always tell with mixes what their ancestry is from their appearance - but when another local rescue had another pup who shared the same build/coloring/markings, they did a DNA test and it came back as mostly Australian Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog, and Border Collie. It would make sense to me if our dog had similar ancestry - agreeable dogs who seek out people and are just naturally a very good boy or girl would definitely have a leg up in a life where survival is based on competing for handouts (or even just being allowed to hang around and have access to scraps) in a community where there are lots of strays that are sort of treated as "community dogs" until they pick their person.

I am an experienced tow trucker and rescued many drivers that could have helped themselves if they understood their own vehicles.
Had you put in 4L you most likely would have come out on your own. Also since have a winch, learn how that can pull you out and others. That truck is very capable, but you must learn its functions.
Love your episodes. Watch it religiously.

Yeah, Nikki sure did play the stereotype of the clueless girl in this video. I could have got way worse vehicles out of that situation pretty easy. She had a winch and a 4L setting and did not do it.

Some Tacomas comes with differential lockers too.
Whenever you rent or buy a overland/off-road capable vehicle, please have someone show you what accessories and tools it has. That can save your life and definitely save your hard earned money.
With a good winch with a few snatchblocks and recovery straps and tree savers you can rescue yourself almost every time.
Personally I always have a second winch on my truck for the hitch.

Nikki, your Toyota should be equipped with both a traction control switch, as well as a rear differential locker. Turning off traction control lots of times can get you unstuck out of minor situations, if that doesn't work flip on the rear dif locker which connects both wheels together so you get 100% traction on both wheels, that should have easily got you out of that pickle I think! Keep on rockin.

    • @llaeeZ
      @llaeeZ ปีที่แล้ว +18

Really helps to get familiar with offroad driving if you own such a vehicle. Stuff like that traction control is pretty useless offroading.
Also get familiar wich such topics as locking differentials, locking hubs and transfer case.
To me it seems that it was still just in rear wheel drive.
Maybe Nikki should take a trip and visit Matts Offroad Recover, Trail Mater or BSF Recovery team. :)

Yeahh 100%, I didn't see the front wheels turning either so it might have been in 2WD, central locker was probably not engaged and much less the rear (that truck hopefully has one) I would love to see a how to video made by Nikki, using the transfer case and lockers etc.

I'm hoping that she gets the owner's manual out and familiarizes herself with the capabilities of that rig. Others have pointed out that four wheel drive and a locking diff have to be engaged to work, and that there's a winch already on the truck. (Personally I think if she'd engaged 4H as soon as she heard a little slip she'd have driven right out.)

I didn’t read all the comments but - I suspect that people have already mentioned that your truck could have easily driven itself out of that (four wheel drive - if that doesn’t work lock the rear diff - four low - lower the tire pressure - if all that fails use the winch). I’m not blaming you or giving you a hard time, some one needs to teach you that stuff. Feel free to PM me if you want some suggestions on ways to learn. :)

Beat me to it as well. 4 wheel drive should have easily pulled out of that. Surprised the guy that helped her didn’t think of this. Or maybe he did and somehow it was actually in 4 wheel drive. Didn’t look like it though. I know a lot of people aren’t aware that in most 4 wheel drive trucks, you need to switch the mode to 4 wheel drive. As opposed to say an Audi that’s just always in all wheel drive.

With big rocks like that, you probably could’ve gotten yourself outta there. Always reverse first if you start to spin the tires out. And when you start, don’t do so in first gear. Use 3rd or fourth and your clutch to control the power (assuming you’re in a manual) and turn any traction control off, always makes getting stuck worse. Worse comes to the worst invest in a set of sand ladders, saves on hoping somebody is around to pull you out.
Tyre pressure is also important. Lowering it is especially useful on sand or mud, more area on the ground = more traction.

Seeing Nikki jump into freezing water forced me to evaluate why I actually sub. to her channel. I am super comfy in my climate controlled home /couch. I will never opt. to spend more than 2 days living out of a vehicle in any given year. Nor would I EVER jump into cold water, much less freezing water. So why am I hooked on Nikki? Camper! Love to see vlogs with dogs cuz I can always tell how joyous & smart they are.
Last year, a huge metal door started falling towards me. My 4 dogs skedaddled so fast they practically flew out of the way, I on the other hand, said I can hold it (in my defense, I didn't expect it to weigh about 500 lbs...hahaha, "my defense"). Dogs don't, waste time over-analyzing. I got multiple tears on my right shoulder. It's been over a year & I still have shoulder pain. I got lucky door hit other items that took the brunt of the weight. So my daily shoulder pain is a constant reminder of how truly stupid we are (in general) as humans vs. others species walking the Earth.
Luckily, dogs can't use human word s to tell us what they really think when they see us jumping out of perfecting working planes or jumping into freezing waters! Hahaha

Always amazing adventures! You might want to look up "Locking Rear Differential" on the Tacoma 4x4. When you have the truck in the 4x4 mode, in reality, only the driver side front and passenger side rear tires are driving the truck. That's why the pasenger side tire was spinning and digging into the loose rocks. When you push the button to Lock The Rear Differential", then you get power equally to both rear tires. By doing that plus being in LOW 4Wheel Drive, you probably would have pop right out of the loose rocks. However, having a helping hand is always great in those situations. Did you get a chance to explore a little of "The Lost Coast"?

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So long as there isn't any wheel slip relatively equal power goes to each wheel otherwise your tire wear would be much worse on one side than the other. When one wheel slips yes an open differential tends to dump all the power to the slipping wheel. Her truck does look like a more offroad equipped Tacoma so I would think it would have a rear locker. I would think that if she had it though she would have probably hit the button to lock it out.

Trying to turn and move forward pushes the front tires into the gravel. Keep the front tires strait, least form of resistance. And then rock out of the hole. Sometimes putting tree bark like a rug in front of the rear tires and try to drive onto it, this while spread the weight across more surface. You could carry a rollout mesh just for this and snow.

He was a rescue, they soon learn whats worthwhile to try and chase after, and its friendly humans that pay out in food, not squirrels.
Dogs are domesticated by default, most dogs never grow up, they never have to.
You are their parent for life, they never link the hunt instinct with where the food comes from.
At some point camper likely figured out that chasing squirrels and birds doesnt pay off in an actual meal.

OK I love your adventurous travels videos, but... I'm a bit confused with the getting stuck part.... Are you not in a 4 wheel drive 4x4 Toyota Tacoma? You gotta be. If not, then why a winch, which you clearly don't know how to use, on a two wheel truck. You really should learn everything about that truck,or at least know how to engage 4 wheel drive and how to use that winch in case you get yourself into a sticky situation and no one is around to save you...

Nikki - I just got a funny comment from someone about your swim in icy water - here was my response, i.e., a different POV:
"I definitely don't relate - I'm the one who took an electric blanket to summer camp when I was a kid, and the cabin only had one light bulb. I had to take an adapter for the bulb socket and an extension cord. When electric blankets came out on the market, my Mother called the woman who ran the department and said, "I want the first one that comes in." It was for me! I still sleep under one!"

I live an hour from the Redwoods and it was where we spent a lot of time as a kid, day hiking, camping, road trips...it was our playground growing up. There is no other place on earth like it and it wasn't until I was older that I realized how unique and special it is...I think as a kid I just thought this is what the entire world looked like give or take. It's my favorite place to be still. When the wind isn't blowing, the quiet is amazing. We have some fantastic rivers and ocean views too in this area.

Nice moody and atmospheric drive. It’s nice to see that you’ve slowed down a bit from when I first met your. Back then you sprinted through all these beautiful scenic locations. Now you have some awesome panoramic and sustained views of these places. Uhm, so back when you took that dip in the river, and then you asked Camper if he wanted to take a swim as well. I could actually see the he was pretending not to hear you. He was blatantly ignoring you. He definitely didn’t want to freeze his thin skin fury body. He’s lacking any body fat to warn up quickly, and didn’t think you’d share your towel for him, since you were still shivering a bit? It also looked like his attitude was, excuse me but I wish to smell the rose’s like everyone I hear recommend to everyone that you should do every once in a while. And you’re right it is all your fault, because you have converted me into a foodie connoisseur, woof! I’m only asking because it’s the first time I’ve become aware of it. You always start you day off by exiting you vehicle and video your feet entering your footwear, but this was this first time I had noticed you had nail polish on your little piggies. Now which little piggy went we we we all around the country like you do? Oh I’ve seen, if you have large rubber floor mats placed in front of the stuck tire can also work to give you traction to escape from that particular dilemma as another option, if you didn’t have the help you had.
