The Fact that SRM has taken the OoT Speedrun to a point where the 5 minute Super Smash Bros Brawl Demo version of OoT can be beaten, and the fact that it's dropped regular OoT times to about 6 minutes, and MM times to 19 minutes is just insane.
This is an excellent explanation of the glitch and its history in MM for general audiences! I should clarify though, I played no part in the discovery/invention of grab SRM. That was the original wave of scientists (GNS/fig/fasch/etc). My part was just noticing that Deku guards could have their warp destinations modified with it.
Ah yes here we see the speedrunner in his natural habitat. His cries of WHAT WHAT WHAT are to alert other speedrunners that he has experienced something unexpected. Next week we will cover LETS GOOO and its meaning.
Some corrections for the Debug menu and Moon Warp discovery timeline: -In November 2018, Fasch looked into an old glitch called Index Warp and found out that by playing song of soaring tons of times you can do some memory manipulation. This was named Text Overflow and had no known uses -Then in April 2019, I found out Text Overflow could theoretically open the debug menu. Then I worked together with Fasch to come up with the first method to open the debug menu in May 2019. -Then in August 2019, MrCheeze worked with Fasch and I to come up with an speedrun-viable method to open the menu, which was used in speedruns. -Then GlitchesAndStuff discovered SRM in October 2019. Fasch found that using SRM on owl statues could theoretically be used to warp to the Moon. -I came up with a working Moon Warp method using the Southern Swamp owl a few weeks later in November 2019.
Its insanely cool how you all work together, building off of what each other has found in order to glitch hunt. I used to think that runners would just... happen to find a glitch and start using it. Videos and posts like this really put into perspective the work that you all do! Nice job. =)
@@wheeI It overwrites a specific part of ram with invalid data, which always causes the game to crash or softlock. Speedrunning has come so far bro, it truly impresses me how people can discover new ways to improve their times, and just when you think we have reached optimal time for a run, someone goes and optimises it further, and a few minutes are lost on the world record time.
The reason you normally need the Goron Mask to get the Zora Mask (for those who have forgotten or haven't played) is because you need Epona to get over a wall blocking the Great Bay. To get Epona, you need to complete a quest during the first night at Romani Ranch, which is blocked by a boulder. The boulder is removed by a worker on the third day, but to get it early, you can use a Powder Keg to blow it up. To get a Powder Keg, you need to be in Goron form (along with having a license from Medigoron).
The videos on this channel are always so well-done. Whenever I see one, it makes me want to figure out what's going on in some of the potentially game-breaking glitches in the games I run.

Having this channel out there to teach about awesome moments and stories from the community has really helped me appreciate the concept a lot more!
Lowest Percent still lives! Also: The Meta Story with the Deku Guard SRM Wrongwarp is hilarious: They hate Link's guts as an intruder so much that they kick him out so hard that he ends up inside the Moon.
ACE is one of the craziest things to ever exist in a video game. Seeing what they can do in Super Mario World (play flappy bird or snake) I can only imagine what they'll be able to do with majora's mask.
SRM/ACE breaking games left and right was a truly glorious thing to witness in the speedrunning community, seems to have died off now for the most part. Probably the highlight of it all was how to accept them for the speedrunning leaderboards based on the controllers and notches in the joysticks being used and what form was being used.
I'm a fan of the "no major glitches" category. ACE is super interesting and all, but once it's discovered in a game, the runs become incomprehensible to the layman.
I would like to see a video on Metroid Fusion speedrunning. To my knowledge, it was deemed impossible to break until someone finally found a way to do memory manipulation, and even then the times didn't drop too massively.

Having just binged all of Bismuth's videos yesterday, this is incredibly familiar despite the differing terminology. Makes sense that similar glitches can show up in and be (ab) used in different games. Very cool! 😁🍍
the thing I like the most about videos like this is that I’m so very confused by everything I see but I know enough to love them. I think I get about 70% of what’s going on and that’s enough for me. speed runs are fucking fascinating
It says required dungeons, and the divine beasts are not normally required to beat the game. You can beat the game without glitches and still not do the beasts, hence making them not count under the list of required dungeons.
I found a huge problem with your channel. Its that.... There's not enough! Can't wait for more episodes, it took me a couple hours to watch everything on the channel and I loved it.
To illustrate how powerful Arbitrary Code Execution really is, they recently used it to finally get the triforce in Ocarina of Time. No, it isn't actually in the game. They used ACE to program it in so they could get it.
I love speed running. "Our mission is to play this game so much we can tear it down to its fundamental code and divest it of all its secrets!" Average person: Why? "So we can play as little of the game as possible!"
I understand the debug menu being controversial (even in a glitch run), but SRM doesn't seem that much more crazy than other major glitches in other games, so I really don't understand the controversy. Especially since you say they separate the runs now.
I think the biggest things are that SRM requires extremely precise skill to pull off, whereas debug menu just required you to play a song 70 times. Plus there’s still a lot of restrictions on SRM and a lot of experimentation was needed to figure out how exactly to get the right warp, whereas the debug menu is a handcrafted gui that gives you everything on a platter. It feels more like cheating than glitching
SRM requires you to take a long series of precise actions to succeed... And once you have done so, the only thing resembling 'gameplay' that is left is the last fight. Which is the controversy. Some people say that a Speedrun is 'completing' the game as fast as possible, some say it is 'playing' the game as fast as possible. Even proponents of SRM can agree that executing SRM doesn't look or feel like playing the game. I don't have much of an opinion either way, but the debate is certainly interesting.
"However, SRM still remains nearly as controversial a topic as the debug menu once was." Why? It's in its own category, isn't it? Why would someone be mad at a speedrun trick, let alone a trick in its own category?
Something in my heart makes me want to consider the “just bomb hop to the moon” idea the speedrunner’s equivalent of the plan set forth by the Kingdom responsible for the Stone Tower Temple to reach the heavens.
