  • Big Macca no.169M first ever start since ive owned it . Running backwards because it can run either way . Sounds realy quiet mechanically but its not quiet . Made in Richmond in Melbourne Australia 1939. I’ve had it stripped right down except I left the crank and flywheel in place. Had a very rusty bore but it honed up OK. Miraculously I found new piston and little end bushes and a new gudgeon pin. Rings were perfect and I suspect the big end bearing was already newish.

    Retired old Chief Engineer ex British Merchant Navy.... sweet sounds of power and torque from an engine that could be fueled on goose fat or cow fart gas from the top of the dung heap cover...fantastic, keep it running because one day that may be the only power source you have. Thanks for the demonstration!

    Wow for some reason I really like this engine. Looks like the piston might be 8". SWEET!!!! I suppose it could run a generator head. Need to fabricate a pto shaft and I bet the governor is not up to leveling 60 cycles ac but a 40 kilowatt head should be no problem just hard to start quick. Would need to set up an electric heater as soon as the power went out so could get going in 1/2 an hr or with gasoline in 10 minutes if pressed. Didn't notice cooling but would be needed for sure. You could use the hot water for different things.

    Diesel engines fire the fuel and air mixture with high compression, something this engine does not have. Notice the burner at the front of the engine, it is heating an area of the engine probably called a hot bulb. There are other styles so I’m not sure which one is on this engine. This is an oil engine, oil is injected into the hot bulb and vaporized, simultaneously the piston comes up on compression and you have a firing stroke. Close to a diesel but not quite. While the engine is running it keeps the hot bulb hot enough to vaporize the oil being injected into the hot bulb.

    • @isettech
      @isettech 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a glow engine, much like many modern diesels with glow plugs. It is still heat from compression, assisted by the hot surface that ignites the fuel.
      Diesel engines come in two varieties in ignition, and two and four stroke models.
      High compression with a loud diesel knock, and often have pollution issues with nitrites of oxygen, and
      Lower compression hot surface ignition engines, which are quieter, often lighter due to less strain on the bearings, rods, etc, and lower oxides of nitrogen emissions.

    • @jenkodiesel5768
      @jenkodiesel5768  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      dunno about lighter. The flywheel is 1 ton

    • @yt650
      @yt650 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @isettech
      I’m assuming that you know the glow plugs in a diesel engine simply heat the air in the intake manifold and don’t operate while the engine is running. As I’m sure you know compression is what causes the mixture in a diesel engine to fire when the fuel is injected under high pressure. Giving the diesel engine a head start in cold weather by heating the air in the intake manifold then when the air is compressed and fuel is injected the very cold engine has a better chance of starting because the air has already been warmed up considerably. I’m presuming that you already know this but for others who read these comments they may not understand.
      In some Third World countries engines similar to the one you see here started in cold weather by putting a rag that has been set a fire with kerosene or diesel fuel on it right by the air intake there by heating any air is it a drawn over the flame. The burning rags extinguished once the engine starts, I guess you could call that the early glow plugs.

      @@yt650 Short and sweet, I'm not talking about a pre-heater. I'm talking about the in cylinder glow plugs. Yes after the engine starts, and the power to the plugs is turned off, they continue to glow from the compression. Citation provided.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glowplug
      TLDR from the link.
      A glowplug (alternatively spelled as glow plug or glow-plug) is a heating device used to aid in starting diesel engines. In cold weather, high-speed diesel engines can be difficult to start because the mass of the cylinder block and cylinder head absorb the heat of compression, preventing ignition. Pre-chambered engines use small glowplugs inside the pre-chambers. Direct-injected engines have these glowplugs in the combustion chamber.

      Yes I understand and depending on your age and what you have been through over the decades with construction equipment, you may come to understand or ask yourself how does any of this affect this particular engine. I have had or have internal combustion engines not toys mind you that have no intake rocker arm nor cam lobe and work on atmospheric pressure. Any intrusion into the combustion chamber even pieces of carbon can glow after the firing stroke and I wouldn’t be surprised that anything in the combustion chamber continues to glow. The definition from 100 years ago or longer describing a diesel engine differ considerably to the description of a diesel engine today. Credit Rudolph Diesel.

    It is a beauty. I would believe ridiculous claims for torque, but I don't see how it could develop fifty actual horsepower while being throttled to death by those reed valves. If it is rated for fifty, I would begin to suspect that the whole "peak horsepower" scam is a lot older than we knew.

    • @jenkodiesel5768
      @jenkodiesel5768  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      its every bit of 50 hp and as the torque goes, try stopping it with your shoe. seriously though in those days they actually brake tested each engine as it came off the line
