You are right about climbing the flywheel. I talked to a guy at our local club that had a superior throw him across his yard. Apparently all the plates and screws in his leg has turned him into a great weather predictor. He now has air start on the engine.
I grew up in a little central Louisiana oil patch town named "Tullos". The pop-pop-pop of these little engines lulled me to sleep every night and when (for some reason) one stopped, I immediately woke. We have an old "railroad" Elgin pocket watch that saved my grandfather's life by shielding his midsection from the shrapnel from an exploding engine that he was trying to start. Never knew what he did wrong, but, obviously he did something wrong.
When I was a kid in southwest New York, I used to wake up to this type of sound from the pump station across the valley. I never got to see the engine, but I have been looking at and listening to oil pump engines for years and this is the first I have heard that makes that really slow exhaust sound. Took me back.
Granddad (born 1905) told me that the hot tube engines used to have a platinum ring in the hot tube to promote ignition. He always wanted to get ahold of one of those to make a ring for Grandma, but I guess everybody had the same idea. As to the engine "sucking the safety on the bottle closed" the oilfield engines had accumulators. They were like small versions of the huge coal gas tanks. I watched a video with one once. The accumulator would slowly fill, and then when the engine "hit" it would suck down a lot of the gas, then it would refill during the "miss" cycle. If I ever get an engine, I want to track down a spider and one or two pump jacks for it to run.
I like the story that your granddad wanted to make a ring for your grandma that’s neat but this is what I was told about the accumulator one some called them gas-o-meters we had one on the first Reid we had and they are oil filled to keep them from leaking and two I was always told you only need one when the hot tube and engine are on the same fuel source due to these engines running on very low fuel pressure there was a chance that if the engine it a hard enough load it could suck the flame out in the hot tube then you have lost ignition and if that happens now you have gas not being burned flowing into the building and with open flame lighting like yellow dogs that’s what will set the building on fire or make it explode and as for them refilling on the miss cycle they very well would refill on a miss cycle but there are not very many oil engines that are hid and miss there are a few but the majority including Reid Bessemer and ball are all 2 cycle there is no miss they only miss because the fuel mixture isn’t right and there are a lot of things that can affect that when you run a hot tube and humidity is a big one

That depends on oil production I knew several old guys that as a kid went out and were responsible for starting multiple engines every morning now at a show if I can start in the morning with less people and let it run into the night then shut down I do
I was willed a 1915:20hp Reid oil firld engine. ran once I know about 30yrs ago but I didn't observe the start sequence . But i have it tunning on vhs video
England was Speculating on going to Hot Bulb Engines, for their Tanker Ships, Because they use the fuel they’re hauling, and Weight Hauling to Fuel Consumption is Better, They were saying. And can use any fuel.
The little wheel is called a drillers wheel or a telegraph wheel depending on who you talk to but it is for engines that run drilling rigs there would be another wheel like it on the drilling platform and a cable would be wrapped around them it allowed the driller to control the speed of the engine from the platform instead of waking back to the engine itself
The hot tube is exactly what the name implies it’s a hollow metal tube that is threaded into the head of the engine and it glows cheery red that is your ignition source instead of a spark
Nice Reid. I see that it only runs in "4stroke" mode. (Hits every other stroke) That probably helps it run slow. I wonder why though? Is it too lean and wont fire the first time around? Then it pulls another charge making it rich enough to fire (the 2nd time)?
Most of the issue with it skipping is ignition a hot tube is very inconsistent the other part of that is I don’t have an accumulator for the fuel so it’s possible it don’t have enough but if I speed it up it will fire every time.
How much propane does this engine use over a given time? This thing is awesome. I want one. Have small flywheel engines currently. 7 herc and a couple JD.
I can run on a 20 lb bottle for about 4 hours total but it will frost one in about 3 hours so I have to warm it back up to get that extra little bit out of it if you are running the hot tube on the same bottle it will cut that down quite a bit
@@BigBlockSpence they aren’t to bad if all of the valving is sealed and the the regulator pistons are set correctly starting from scratch it’s a lot of cranking to find out what each engine wants fuel wise they are pretty close but they each have their own personalities the biggest thing people run into is they are notoriously easy to flood
There is one on Facebook marketplace for sale that I believe the person listing it thinks its a ball engine and the have it spelled boll but the pics that are their are a Reid I don’t know what size looks to be a 15 or 20 hp it’s in West Virginia I think they want $1,000 for it but it said if it don’t sell it’s getting scrapped so someone could probably get it really cheap
It’s no worse than a hopper cooled engine with water in the jacket it can only get to boiling now I agree I would not want to run it all day that way but for 20-30 minutes as long as water is over the cylinder it isn’t going to hurt anything

I wished you would have explained the engines principle of operation. Why does it have two cylinders of different sizes, with 90 degrees crankshaft orientation? What controls the intake and exhaust events? Is the smaller cylinder a sliding valve?
I understand where it’s seems like that’s what’s happening here but a stirling works due to a temperature difference and air displacement the Reid in this video is a traditional internal combustion engine the burner and the tube are an ignition source for the air and fuel the second piston is basically a fancy fuel pump
Help needed. My son purchased a 15hp Reid type A. We have tried to start it numerous times. Recently we had a friend look at it. The crossover value is missing copper rings. Do you have a contact where I could purchase a top and bottom ring?
Ok so as far as I know no one is making them you have to make them it is very easy to do if you have a local advance auto they usually have it in stock if not they can order it but you need a bosh oil gage install kit that has copper the tubing in roll it measure where the rings need to go then cut them to length get the gap as close as you can it doesn’t have to be perfect but the closer the better once you have them cut to length take a torch and heat them up until they glow it doesn’t have to be all at one you can heat it in sections once the cool place them over the valve and put it in DONT hammer them flat first let the valve crush them they seal better now I am not going to lie mine still leaks just a little but it runs just fine and offset the gaps in them just like you would piston rings if you need it I can make a video on how to do this
@@snicks50 to stay on the safe side I would cut it in half I am not sure exactly mine isn’t loaded but it depends on several elements like how big the load is how long it’s loaded and your speed at idle mine on the hot tube isn’t firing ever revolution like it should with that being said if it was the consumption rate will be dramatically lower running at lower rpm like any engine the other problem is you will loose bottle pressure as the tank starts to frost I had someone tell me they could get 7 hours or so out of a small bottle before it would frost then they would stop the engine them the bottle warm up and they would get about another hot out of it
The reid my grandpa had was run on a 100 pound bottle and because it was in a mag and running at idle we could run it all week at Portland Indiana no problem with fuel to spare mine is on small bottles to run it temporarily but when it gets put on my trailer it will get 2 100 pound bottles one for fuel and one for the hot tube
This engine was designed for oil field work they could be set up and used to run the drilling rigs or what most did was run a central power oil lease it and the power sat in a central location on the lease and then rod lines (aka) sucker rods ran from the power house out to the pump jacks to move them so this engine was capable of running several wells at once
The smaller cylinder on the on the side is the charging cylinder it draws in the air fuel mixture and then charges it into the main drive cylinder at the same time it pushes the exhaust gas out
us newer fangled guys would call that cylinder a scavenging pump....also at a later point in history this cylinder layout was called a twingle or a twin piston "single"....usually without a cross over valve, instead using piston timing to create a reasonable cumbustion chamber volume....the whole idea is flush exhaust out and push fresh in during a single crank shaft rotation.....some early small Sachs motorcycle engines use the same technique
on my oilers the reid manual itself says that the pot oilers hold enough oil to lube the engine for 24 hours I have not done the math to see what that comes out to but when I set them I run them where I get a drip every 25 to 30 seconds

The governor on Reid’s was an option if it had one they are supposed to be mounted to the side of the block behind the valve body I don’t have mine on or hooked up yet I had some work to do on it and have not finished it
@@Fairlane55 it is very difficult to get engines like this to run correctly on a hot tube the hot tube ignition can be very inconsistent when not under load. temperature differences with the tube, placement of the hot spot, variations in the air fuel and humidity are all factors in the way these engines run while it is very possible to get a hot tube to run correctly getting it to run correctly on a consistent basis is the battle that all of us fight

@@peterhenrikpoulsen2026 it’s all good this is the entire reason my channel exists to explain things about these engines that most people don’t and I do believe I understand what you are asking so I will say that this engine is 2 cycle which means that it is supposed to fire every revolution but also you did hear it miss and I say that for lack of a better term this engine has no valving except for an intake and exhaust port in the main cylinder and it also has none of the governing system that makes a hit and miss work the miss in hit and miss is caused buy mechanical weights holding the exhaust valve of the engine open when it gets to a certain speed allowing it to coast with no compression or intake vacuum this engine can’t do that so the miss you hear is due to the fact that the ignition system is a tube that is glowing red hot we call these hot tubes they are an extremely reliable ignition source because there are no moving parts no wires and no magnets to creat a spark it’s literally just a heat source it’s basically a fancy glow plug that needs to run all the time they miss and don’t fire constantly when the engine idles due to a number of issues humidity is a big one and I don’t know why but it has a major affect on the way this engine runs if wind is blowing you can loose heat you could have inconsistencies in fuel pressure so the mixture may not have been right it is extremely hard to get a hot tube to run the correct way but it can be done

I am aware of what I did I normally don’t But in order to keep the vid short I had to light the tube first because it takes so long to heat up you can be mad all you want but when you go to a show and see a guy climbing each flywheel and 2 standing behind them pulling and all of them are on the same engine it needed to be said

Yes the out side cylinder brings it in charges the drive cylinder in the center then it compresses it and fires

I do not have one with the parts labeled but I do have cross sections from the original book such a thing could be made though

The cylinder in the center is the cylinder that is running the engine the outside cylinder is basically a large fuel pump

What's your drip rate on the oilers?
on my oilers the reid manual itself says that the pot oilers hold enough oil to lube the engine for 24 hours I have not done the math to see what that comes out to but when I set them I run them where I get a drip every 25 to 30 seconds

@@peterhenrikpoulsen2026 it’s all good this is the entire reason my channel exists to explain things about these engines that most people don’t and I do believe I understand what you are asking so I will say that this engine is 2 cycle which means that it is supposed to fire every revolution but also you did hear it miss and I say that for lack of a better term this engine has no valving except for an intake and exhaust port in the main cylinder and it also has none of the governing system that makes a hit and miss work the miss in hit and miss is caused buy mechanical weights holding the exhaust valve of the engine open when it gets to a certain speed allowing it to coast with no compression or intake vacuum this engine can’t do that so the miss you hear is due to the fact that the ignition system is a tube that is glowing red hot we call these hot tubes they are an extremely reliable ignition source because there are no moving parts no wires and no magnets to creat a spark it’s literally just a heat source it’s basically a fancy glow plug that needs to run all the time they miss and don’t fire constantly when the engine idles due to a number of issues humidity is a big one and I don’t know why but it has a major affect on the way this engine runs if wind is blowing you can loose heat you could have inconsistencies in fuel pressure so the mixture may not have been right it is extremely hard to get a hot tube to run the correct way but it can be done

I am aware of what I did I normally don’t But in order to keep the vid short I had to light the tube first because it takes so long to heat up you can be mad all you want but when you go to a show and see a guy climbing each flywheel and 2 standing behind them pulling and all of them are on the same engine it needed to be said
He’s just trying to get it done, at least he ACKNOWLEDGED the danger of such things and showed us. No different than old farmers 😅
