Pentastar V6 | PUG Upgrade | Lower intake manifold

  • So here we go. We are installing the lower intake manifold from the 2018 and up Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Jeep V6 Pentastar Engine with the start/stop technology. As some have started to port the lower intake manifold FCA came out with one that is better than ported. After measuring the volume it is actually about 20ml or 20ccm bigger than the ones that came before. To me, for around $100, it is a worth while upgrade to my vehicle.
    If you are actually reading the description you will learn that I broke the o-ring on one of the injectors. I didn't use assembly fluid which would have saved me from a gassy mess. So I bought new o-rings and assembly fluid and the second time around it worked like a charm. I will include links to the rings and assembly fluid below.
    Thanks for watching!

    Disconnect the fuel line then take injectors/lower intake off as a unit (much easier to do the rest on the bench, less mess too).
    Replace the gaskets if they're deformed don't risk a leak because of $20 in silicone
    Be very careful about overtightening upper/lower intakes, the plastic cracks/strips very easily.

    I’m a Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram mechanic since 1996. You should never re use the blue intake gaskets. They are not re useable. They swell and get soft immediately. The newer ones are green and re useable. Also you can pull that lower intake with the fuel rail installed. No need to disassemble in the car like you did.

    • @Turbo_Snail

      Thanks for your info. I wasn’t able to find greens ones a couple of years ago but I will research it and get me a set as I need to pull it off again. In regards to the fuel rail, I’ll try that next time. I wasn’t aware you could do that.

      @@cokeyNbk The best one is the 926-876 Dorman. But if you search you find lots of made in china stuff too. For made in China reuse your sensors rather than theirs and I had one leak after a few years. There are also improved seals, I bought some but haven't needed them yet. Be sure to drain some coolant ahead of time or it can leak into your oil through the open ports also if you unscrew the oil filter lot of oil will drain from the cooler, do this before removing the fasteners that hold the cooler in place. Another tip watch some videos on the injector clips or you might struggle with them and break one to figure them out.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that tune really wakes the car up. The PUG will not be that dramatic. Mainly sound and a little mid range pickup. Mario and I have been working on 50lbs injectors. As soon as we iron it out, I’ll make the video.

    • @GYATEZ
      @GYATEZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Turbo_Snail You run E85 correct? Since my car is not an E85 car, I don't think 50lb injectors will work or help.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After I was tuned the car worked perfect but trying to run e85 my injectors ran out of capacity. So we got bigger injectors to be able to run on ethanol. The problem is, no one supports larger injectors so Mario has been doing tons of calculations. The car runs fine however for some reason the car thinks I’m running e85 when I’m not which means we can’t properly tune for it. As soon as we figure out the wrong reading we’ll have a proper running flex fuel car.

Great detailed video of the process. I hope to be tuning my car as well. I’ll be doing a little at a time. Do you have any suggestion for order of progress? Where should I start? The car has 81,000 miles. So far all I’ve had to do is replace a fuel injector and installed new spark plugs. Glad I stumbled upon your video series.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the car. Best color. I wish I would have gone AWD but it wasn't available. Keep the seats nice and buttered up with Leather conditioner. I wear jeans and I have yet to have any stains on my seats after 3.5 years. In regards to performance upgrades, I gotta say the tune is the best upgrade. But it is the most expensive one. Here is what I would do, if you start small.
      The PUG would be #1, while in there replace the spark plugs and injectors for the 8-hole injectors. You already put some in so I would skip the injectors for now.
      I just installed the Strut Bar, and wow, what a difference in the way the car feels. I think I paid $60-70 and well worth the upgrade.
      My next upgrade is brakes. I flushed the brakes and it helped but I got new rotors and pads coming. Give me a couple weeks, I'm working on a video there as well.
      I hear people love the way the throttle body feels, which is on my list as well.
      First, however, if you got crappy tires, get good tires, you'll be able to put the power to the ground. I love my 19" wheels but honestly the 18's are more comfortable and lighter. Also, with the tune, my all-season tires, just spin and spin and spin.
      Check out my other videos. Thank you for watching :)

    What a PITA to rip all that apart. You should have done the upper intake and TB upgrades, since you had everything apart. You can get a ported/polished TB and heavier airflow upper for the Pentastar 3.6s.
    What I haven't been able to find yet is an upgraded injector set and fuel pump.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is a PITA. and I’ve done it 3 times now. I have a throttle body from BBK performance that will go in there next. Right now we are working on the tune for the 50lb/hr injectors. Trying to get the scaling right as no one really done that size injectors before. But that will be the correct size to run ethanol once again. The stock injectors are good for 93 octane tune but then they are maxed. The fuel pump should be good enough to fuel the vehicle. As soon as we got everything sorted out I’ll be making another video. (I also installed a wideband AFR meter).

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Btw, don’t waste your time on a ported throttle body. The upper intake I’m curious about.

    • @DarkpawTheWolf
      @DarkpawTheWolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Turbo_Snail Why wouldn't you do the ported TB? I recall seeing an 80mm ported/polished for this.
      Also, the reason I'm looking for a fuel pump upgrade (with zero luck) is to run >100 shot of nitrous. From what I understand, at that rate, you'll get fuel starvation from the pump for the 3.6, and it will run lean. Do you think the stock pump would still work with the upgraded injectors? What part number for your high flow injectors?

I’ve heard other people had good luck with old gaskets if there wasn’t too much mileage. I put links for part and gaskets in the description. Thanks for watching :)

Get the Mopar CAI if you can find. I paid $400-ish if I remember and it also wakes up the engine and shaved some time at the track. Look at my CAI video.

    The lower intake seals always appear deformed even from the factory. I’ve re used plenty of them and never had them leak. Also if those seals come in contact with fuel, they will swell up and become un useable. But they are readily available from any auto parts store or the dealership, I would just replace them anyways.

      Not sure. I'd love to get hands on one. I think it's the right direction. These plastic things are "temporary" at best. I understand why manufacturers went from steel to aluminum. I really don't understand plastic parts under the hood other than making cars obsolete sooner. Look at BMW and I heard Audi, they have plastic oil pans. How long will that last. I hope for a good aftermarket for the people who make aluminum parts. I'll support them to make sure they survive.

    Hey Daniel.....great vid. Do you recommend the CAI and which one. Seems like 10 hp at 5000 rpm aint that great. Probably 5 hp at best at "regular" rpms around town but curious about your take

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out my CAI video. I had the torque tube from RPM Motorsport. I went to the Mopar CAI.
      I don’t believe you can feel the difference of 5-10hp. Once you hit 10% power increase it is noticeable. However, I have noticed a difference in air intake temperature. Especially when idling. Once the temp goes way up and then you step on it the car feels slower. It seems that the car detunes itself when the IAT is to high to protect the engine. Once it cools down you’re back to full power. I have noticed at the 1/4 mile track that when I get there first and I get 2-3 runs in I get a good time, once it gets busy and I have to idle a long time before my run, my times consistently dropped 0.3 seconds. When I started analyzing, the only difference is the IAT. All that being said, the Mopar CAI consistently runs a lower IAT while driving and it dissipates the heat faster from idle to driving. Maybe because it’s plastic vs metal? Maybe a better, free flowing design? Not sure. I still loose time at the drag strip, but that’s not as relevant because when I idle at the traffic light it’s only a minute and then I get back up to speed. Idling in line at the track is 10+ minutes sometimes.

      Larger injectors need to be programmed to flow the correct amount, otherwise you’re just dumping fuel into your engine. Sometimes car manufacturers buy the same block from the same engine producer but then they throw different internal and intakes and, and, and on. So even if these engines were the same, I doubt you could do it.

    Hi Daniel, I did. the same PUG upgrade on my 2013 Jeep JKU Wrangler. For the Jeep I think it has more full throttle power but reduces mileage … when I have it idling Incan see the mileage runs down quickly which I never have seen before. Maybe it is because of the air flow speed and changed injector angle without using 8 hole injectors as on the ne Pentastars … what do you think. Any other ideas what could cause that drop?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure. I didn’t run 8-hole injectors either at that time. That being said. Every time a do a mod I find myself driving a bit more aggressive! Also, the manufacturers detained the car for max fuel saving, so anything you do will probably impact mileage. That’s why it’s so easy to gain 30+hp just from a tune.

    • @Monty4xe
      @Monty4xe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Turbo_Snail : thanks for your reply. Do you think doing a tune online like you will give power and mileage back? Otherwise I will put the old part back to check it again. Have you noticed that the intake channels are only larger because the injector angle changed as well.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to tune for more hp, I’d say go for it. If however you want more gas mileage I think that’s a waste of $1000. I would try the 8 hole injectors. I’d also give the computer some time to adjust. The numbers it shows from the get-go are probably over/under estimated due to the change. More air will allow for more fuel as well so maybe that’s why you’re not getting what you were looking for. If you’re just looking for better gas mileage I would do a good service, filters, injectors, spark plugs, coils, etc. However, seeing that you drive a wrangler probably a good set of street tires geared for the street rather than off road would make a much higher impact. I lost 3mpg just going from 235 to 245 width tires. Also better quality gas will have a big impact. I’m not talking about 93 vs 87 octane, I’m referring to shell vs Walmart.

      @@Turbo_Snail Hi Daniel… just a Short Update. I put the old intake back and have not noticed a difference . When I did the new intake I also did oil and spark plugs. I checked the new NGK 9723 plugs and all have the wrong GAP . 0.038 not 0.044 so I put also the old ones back ( came from factory) I think mileage gets better now but will drive a bit more … later if all is good I put the other lower intake back in. Hi, where would I use the assembly lube when completing this job? Sorry I am a newbie

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assembly lube is used to slide things in easier. In this particular case you would use it on the rubber gaskets. This way there is no friction and they slide in just perfectly. You could assembly it without assembly lube, however when parts that slide together are dry, the weakest part, ie rubber gasket, may twist, not seal properly or just break.
      Little story here. I put in new fuel injectors into a car. Little rubber o-rings are required. They then slide into another part. I didn't have assembly fluid. One of the o-rings twisted and caused a massive fuel leak. 3 hours and a new set of o-rings and assembly fluid and I got it together fine the second time. Keep in mind 5 o-rings went in correct, but that 1 that twisted and essentially cracked caused me an extra afternoon of work.

      REad the Description. I tried to put all the model changes in it. Depends on your model year.

      If it’s the 2012 it should work. I don’t think they upgraded it till 2016-2017.

    So how much hp and tq would this even ad?

      I don’t think anyone ever dynoed this. But everybody says now that it adds some midrange torque. If I would have to give it a guess, maybe 3-5hp. For $100 it’s a worthwhile mod. The Mopar CAI was dynoed at 10hp for $450.
