The key to proper Alocasia care is do not let them overhear you talking about them- doesn’t matter if you call them like you see them ie a major pain in the butt, or if you brag about them having more than 5 leaves. Guaranteed if they hear you you say a single word they’ll drop their leaves. (I’m in my car writing this)
Oops so that’s what it is 😅
🤣🤣🤣 thinking about it now.. everytime I say that it is finally doing well, a leaf goes yellow
if one of my plants ever breaks a hip, i'm calling it a day
I needed this laugh today🤣
😂
I love your videos and how honest you are about your mistakes.
Everytime someone says to me that I have a green thumb, I reply with "I just unalived enough of them to learn a thing or two about it".
Amen to that 😁
Your Calathea zebrina is looking more beautiful than ever, well done
Thanks!
Your humility and passion to teach plant parents like me is very inspiring! Love, love your videos! Thank you very much!
Wow, thank you!
Adding 3 grow lights to my living room has made a drastic difference... About 35 plants only receive sunlight in the evening when it's summer. So in fall and winter they have about 1/8th the light of what they ideally should be getting (they are more than 3 meters from my other windows). I am now confident that my indoor plants will be happy year round :) I started checking this because you talked about the realities of light values indoors, keep preaching 😄
That's excellent!
The Sansi grow lights are amazing. Here in Denmark, it's winter now and we only have around 7-8 hours of grey daylight ☹
I have 3 of the 2x 10W clip Sansi lights on for 4-5 hours every day and it works amazingly well
Never thought I would be able to grow fresh chillies this time of year 👍🏻
My apartment is only about 20C, but it seems that a lot of light is more important than temperature
I loveeee my terracotta pots, they keep me from overwatering for sure!
I always love your funny videos 🥰
Great stuff 👍
9:42 believe me repotting a succulent is one of the hardest things to do as a plant parent 😅!
😬
I’ve definitely adopted your mantra. “It will always grow back” and chop much more quickly now.
Still amazes me how resistant ppl are to measuring light, especially plant TH-camrs. All can drone on and on about watering, chunky mixes, moss poles, stratum/coir/perlite/pumice/tree fern fiber/pon/leca/original garden of Eden soil, but no information on light, save “east facing window” aside because somehow, how much light your featured 2023 favorite wish list dream IG award winning plant is getting is “too technical”. 😂
Also finally broke down and am trying my Alocasia in Pon. Getting water right for them in the winter is too touchy for me, so maybe Pon will be the answer.
😂 like it! Fingers crossed 🤞
Amazing, I just switched to bottom watering my plants, and also using a plastic pot with many drainage holes and the result is amazing. Thanks for the amazing content. In case I need a fancy pot, I just replace the whole baby with it's plastic pot to my fancy fashion pot and will continue bottom watering.
Great 👍
I bought a sansi in september, long before knowing your channel, because my house in the north of Italy gets a weather similar to the UK and the house is without good lighting. Yes I know, sunny Italy... I have to say SANSI it's working very well. I bought only one but I am noticing a big difference and a lot of growth in my plants. I am going to buy another one soon. You have a lovely jungle! Thanks for sharing.
Great to hear!
I totally agree, location, location, location. Alocasias will be the death of me, but I have fallen in love with LECA
Your videos make me and my plants happy!!
Super!
Not checking the cache pot has definitely put a few of mine at risk. My biggest mistake was buying too many thirsty plants think I can keep up.
It's great that we have the option to go (semi)hydro. For me, using soil is fine. Having heard the common pro's you hear from people who use it a lot/solely, the benefits are clear, but the initial cost and different care routine will probably deter most people from fully switching over. As soon as I start having real trouble with a plant, switching that one plant to leca would be a no brainer though! And once I have a bag in my house, I reckon I'll end up switching a couple of plants over because of the better growth rate 😆😆
I started semi hydro..what a disaster..now all plants in soil..
What happened?
Some folks swear by it and some hate it 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for telling it like it is! I agree with you 💯. I live in a part of very hot, sunny and dry Australia, Sydney Plant Guy lives about 1 hour and 45 min flight and they get lots of rain, sun and a lot more humidity than us,but they also get hail the size of golf balls.
I also started to chop any scraggly or single stemmed plants, the plants are looking much fuller. I use a lot of terracotta pots, even succulents dry out so fast,so I started sealing them with a terracotta sealer, makes such a big difference, and the terracotta still breathes, but doesn’t dry out as fast.I’m tempted to try out the semi hydro as well. Can’t wait to see how it works for you! I do really feel for the lack of sunshine,I had a friend who moved here from UK and she was always scared of getting sunburned as she wasn’t used to our harsh Australian sun. You’re a legend! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💚🪴
Great shout on sealing the terra cotta makes a big difference. So where in Australia are you?
@@SheffieldMadePlants South Australia, right down the bottom of the Australian map, well almost! We have beaches, sand and lots of Great White Sharks 😬🦈 😱 Yikes!
My love has always been for cottage plants, roses and flowers but as off 4 years ago I started on indoor plants as well. 💚
Exactly the same bottom watering experience with my plants…and some my plants have law lights issues…thanks good 👍 informative videos
Thanks for watching 😁
Have you ever added pothos cuttings to water with other cuttings, pothos seem to release magic hormones that make other cuttings root faster. I'm trying it right now. Not sure you've made a video about it.
Yes i've mentioned it before. Seems to help
@SheffieldMadePlants Nothing escapes a plant pro. Makes me wonder what tricks are waiting to be discovered. Maybe watering with beetroot juice turns the plant leaves red.😂
Hi Rich. My house is a very fine house. With two cats in the yard and every easy because of you. Watching all your videos have made all my plant kids are doing great. I have started in water and soil and the kids are great. The water meter is a God sent . I really mean Rich sent. LOL. Thank you for being here for us. Please stay safe and have a Happy Holiday Billie USA
Very nice reference 😁
I spray all my terracotta pots and saucers with clear gloss enamel. It keeps them from leaching out all the water and makes them a beautiful deeper color.
Great tip!
You are so brave decapitating your plants..I turn the volume down so my green guys cant hear you!! 😥. I live in the North of England in County Durham and we dont get much sun either. Definitely going to look into getting a "sun lamp". Thank you for your usual brilliant advice!!🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Thanks for watching 😁. Get chopping
Best thing I have done for my plants is go on holiday for two weeks. I placed all my big plants in the bath with a couple of inches of water I put the smaller ones on the kitchen table with water in their bases. I came home to leafy happy plants.
Interesting!
Great tips and advice as always, thank you 👍🏻
I'll share this with my sister and niece right away.
The light meter is a great idea for a Christmas gift wish. My sister recently asked me for a wish list and I had no idea what to put on said list. In my family we usually give gifts for around 50 £ max, which is fine, but if I really need or want anything in that price range, I'll eventually buy it myself.
My wish list is usually the most boring ever 'T-shirts, boxers and socks' 🤣😂
P.S. My sister and niece will both get sansi growligths this year + a magic wand (moisture meter)
You're family sounds great! Plant products doing the rounds 👍
I think youve learned alot from your plants. Thanks for sharing your tips so we dont have to watch our plants die. Have a blessed day.
I have! Thanks
Thanks for your video it makes me feel better about some of my "rude" plants! I have just recently bought a few grow lights and they Love it! However Alocasia is still one of my biggest pains. I am guilty of just throwing them in the composite pile, but I am just crazy enough to try again. Have an awesome day.
They're lovely but a pain in the bum
Snap on the lighting! Getting growlights has made a huge difference to my succulents as they have stopped stretching so much and are keeping their natural colours rather than fading back to green. Plant supports have been a pain. I've tried my pothos on
driftwood/moss/bamboo and it hasn't liked any. I've now just got it growing in water to help the roots as it was looking worse for wear.
Good to know!
OverNight only 😂 I put a tooth pick in the soil so i don't forget what ones to check
Thank you for these videos, I enjoy all the humor you throw in there. You became one of my favorite channels very quickly, and I binge watched 3/4 of your videos. I can't get enough. Thank you for your time!
Wow, thank you!
I just discovered your channel and got hooked on the videos (and humor) that I just had to subscribe. Now I’m binge-watching all of these videos. Move over, Netflix. This is quality content - thanks for making them! 🏆
Wow, thank you!
I live in pretty chilly area too and keeping my plants small but healthy is a plus for me! Never been super successful with hydro, so sticking with my soil, aquarium soil, or water/perlite growing mediums.
Ah good to know
Some of my plants loves the terracotta pots. Save them from my overwatering. 😅
Fair enough 😁
Soooo true!! I bought a pair of Sansi lights as my personal Christmas present to myself and wow, my Alocasia Dragon just bloomed ! Two flower spikes I still can't believe they're real. Thank you Mr. Sheffield !! 🥰
Perfect!
All my alocacatia is doing very well with south, west and north turning every day. Having plant kids are harder to raise. However they don't talk back. Having a sunroom helps. Raising a hibiscus tree. That is a true experiment.. Everyone Happy Holidays 😊
So true 🤣
Beautiful room❤/collection
Thanks!
I have severe overwatering problems, and i just started keeping tropical plants in terricotta, and its a god send. Especially for the pothos, and the ones that really like to dry out
Fair enough 👍
Planterina actually lives in NY state, so she has a short sunny season. She does however have more than 20 years experience with plants. So she learned the light mistake a long time ago. You will see a huge difference once you have the correct light. Yes! Alocasia are the most fussy, spider mite getting plant ever. I have had many and now I am down to one. It is in semi and does great in it.
I’m in New York too and Im already seeing my plants start to suffer.
Don’t forget her other house down south. 😂
She has more sun that me anyway
I thought she lived here in Florida?
7:04 you should make a short for that !
🤔
Ooo a light meter, I might need one of these. Thank you 👍🏻
Any time!
I would highly highly recommend. Air pots. They are genuinely one of the best things ive seen for plants. Designed to make big healthy root root balls with exceptional drainage and aeration.
I've been meaning to try them
Awesome! gonna check out the light meter video. I'd bought one then hadn't a clue what I was doing with it. Just numbers on a screen. A shutter came down in front of my eyes so I put it away.... now I can get it out again. ❤😂
Well worth getting it out again
@@SheffieldMadePlants I shall indeed! Thankyou Mr. Inspirational 🌟
speaking of mistakes, I was so proud of my jade plant 😢 it became a beautiful happy tree and I thought it would be a good idea to put it inside since the temperature dropped to 0°C. After 2 days the bottom leaves became yellow and I have no idea why. I haven't watered it for 2-3 weeks. I put it outside again but same all same 😢 Please help Mr Sheffield ❤
Hmm not sure. Was it living in the sun? Might not have liked the sudden change
I cut my philodendron silver sword up yesterday. I'm hoping it will stop making weird leaves after it roots.
Fingers crossed
Thanks for the wonderful video!! Great as always! 😊 I do disagree with one thing you mentioned, though, the detail about leaving a plant in bottom-water overnight. I've been bottom watering my plants for many months, now, and they LOVE it! 😊 But I accidentally left a young, flourishing Lemon Verbena in a bowl of water, overnight, and woke up to find it mushy and drooping horrendously. 😔 It sadly didn't make it.. I'm still sad over it, as it was climbing very high very quickly, and I had become quite attached. But alas, I learned my lesson.
Now I always make sure to set a timer for 15 minutes, and don't let them sit for more than 20. 😊 No problems.
Maybe it depends on the breed of plant. I've learned from experience that herbs are especially finicky, and far more work to take care of than let's say typical, tropical houseplants.
Thanks! Yeah must be the fragile plant. None of mine have had any issues 🤷🏻♂️
Speaking of fungus gnats, we found out the little buggers can come into your home from the soil you're buying from your local big box store. Prime example, we bought a bag of Miracle Grow Catus and Succulent mix, it has sat around for a bit, unopened mind you. We opened the bag a few days ago and to repot a snake plant, low and behold the bag was loaded with, you guessed it, fungus gnats.
Thank goodness they're just annoying little buggers and aren't detrimental to your beloved green potted friends.
Completely agree
Cheers, Mr Sheffield.
I bought an alocacious (sp?) and it was beautiful in the store. I got it home and it started to die almost immediately. It was down to one stem/leaf and then I used your potting mixture tip (soil and perlite and repotted it and it is doing so much better now. I hope it will grow some pups now.
Oh great!
Beware of the bin😱
Hmmm, I did not know plants in lava rock or LECA require hydroponic fertilizer. Thankfully my plants didn't know that either. I soak my lava and LECA grown plants in an organic liquid fertilizer and they have been happy for years.
Btw, those inserts on your hearth in Modern style/Art Nouveau are really beautiful. 😊
Thank you 😊
@@SheffieldMadePlantswelcome 😊 I have a real soft spot for that style.
I have most of my plants in semihydro (lechuza pon), I love it for plants who don´t want to dry out and for when I´m on vacation :D
cactus, succulents and a few others are in soil, my big monstera deliciosa is in soil as well, but mainly because it´s so big that repotting will be a night mare, also it´s in a selfwatering pot from ikea (don´t recoment this type of pot) and I have zero clue what´s going on with the roots, I asume they are all in the water reservoir and I wont get the plant out of the pot :( I bought the secong 30l bag of pon and hope I actually repot it this time and don´t use all the pon for other plants again :D
That's great! Maybe i'll repot my Monstera. Might need some help though
👍 Enjoyed watching! Thanks!

Also Mr Sheffield one question. What water do you use for your plants?
Just tap water treated with water conditioner
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh really ok Thank you so much !
Dear Sheffield! I appreciate you sharing with us your knowledge and expertise. Personally I’m using some of your advice and it worked very well for my plants. But I have this nagging thought in the back of my mind, especially when I saw your video about plants that you wanted to discard., among them I found my favorite pilea. Every plant needs its personal space to be attractive and to bring joy to its parent. If many plants are just squished all together on one shelf it doesn’t look good. I believe it is better to have fewer plants, only then they will reach their full potential, like my pilea for example - she shares the entire windowsill with peperomia, I turn them around every time I water them and they look gorgeous. Once it’s overgrowing - chop the top and multiply, make cuttings for your friends. So, yeah - less is more! 😄 Appreciate your every video, Sheffield! Keep them coming!
You might be on to something 😁
@@SheffieldMadePlants 😉

10:10 Do you dry your own hydrangea? They’re beautiful!!
Oh yes mrs Sheffield did. That’s about 4 years old
2:05 now your just flexing on me, for many months my zebrina has been the fullest, greenest beauty while yours was a bit on the sadder side. Not anymore, mine dropped all but 2 of its leaves and is a complete mess 😂
Mine will be back there soon no doubt 😂
Pruning plants is wonderful, they might not look great after you're done pruning, but if you leave dying parts on the plant, the plant is wasting its energy trying to save them when it can be using its energy to create new growth. Also, I think you have to kill a few...or more.... plants before you start getting the hang of it. 😅
Only a few mind you 😅
People always say that aloe vera is so easy to take care of... me: pretty sure I've killed at least 10 that I got from my dad's thriving plant. @@SheffieldMadePlants
I grow all my alocasias in Lechuza pon with Lechuza slow release fertiliser and nice light and temperatures above 18 degrees and never experienced dormancy. They grow throughout winter here in central Europe without grow lights (Silver Dragon just finished blooming)- winter doesn´t need to cause dormancy. I highly recommend Lechuza pon with self-watering system for them 🙂
What time does the sun set where you are?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Sun rises at 7:30/8:00 and sets at 16:30 + gloomy days. No grow lights, only large northern windows on 2nd floor. My location: Czech Republic. Room humidity: 60 %.
My alocasia Silver Dragon has 10 leaves and finished blooming last week. Other alocasias don´t bloom yet, but keep all their leaves and continue growing at about a rate of 1 leaf per winter month. I bought them all as baby plantlets in 5 cm pots (only Azlanii I grew from corm). This is their 2nd winter with me.
I swear that winter outside doesn´t need to cause dormancy in alocasias.
My philodendron Brasil lives in a non draining pot (usually filled with water) it's vines are as thick as a dime and it's covering my office wall
Very nice!
I have many plans, which kind of growing light better,no expensive
Depends. A 30w grow bulb you can plug into a standard light fixture is good
Can you make a video about humidity? A lot of information out there saying that some plants can regulate or reduce humidity on a humid basement... Is there any truth in that?
I wouldn’t have thought they would reduce but increase marginally
7:45 actually do the sticky traps work ?
They work well enough to catch some adult fungus gnats but don't do anything for the eggs and larvae. 🥺
For that you have to let the top two inches of soil dry out and use insecticidal soap or change the soil completely, diameteceous earth and some live wiggly worms work.
Did you know they only live 10 days but they can have up to 300 babies and it's about two weeks of incubation and they don't need a partner to multiply.
Can you tell I just got some for the first time ever in over forty years of having plants. 😂
Oh for some reason the little buggers all want to go up your nose 😳😂 be warned.
Good for adults not you need something for the soil too
@@nicoleperron3315 so shall I put some worms in there ? 🪱

How does one plant in Leca?
What is the procedure?
I'm no expert. I just stuck a load of leca around a plant. I do know you need hydroponic feed though
So you are a versatile waterer? Me too 😂😂
👏
Mr Sheffield, I have a huge problem. Completely unrelated to the video topic but I need help. I got a zz plant from Walmart, it’s like an everything store, groceries clothes electronics garden etc. I brought it home without checking the roots. Of course, it had root rot. I cut off the infected roots, hosed off the roots, and put it in all new soil. It’s been a few months and the roots continued to rot, even though I’ve watered it like twice since then. It now has like barely any roots and I don’t know what to do. My only idea is hydroponics and to just grow it in water. Would that work, or is there a better way?
If you want to context me on another platform, I could link pictures
You could try cut the stems and propagating for a new plant. Sounds like this one is done for to be honest. Is the soil free draining?
@@SheffieldMadePlants the pot does have draining holes
@@SheffieldMadePlants I just went ahead and started the propagation process for the ones without ryzomes, and the one with an intact ryzome I just repotted after removing the the rotted roots
Can I ask how many foot candles your calathea zebrina is getting?
In that spot about 600
Thanks!
I'm in Australia 🇦🇺 and I ignore the plant light requirements. I have eastern windows here and the plants that require a fair bit of light are right in front of it. My Calathea table is not. It is underneath a western privacy window( so it's small and high) The west side of my house has hight lily pilly trees right beside it so the light is dappled. It's spring here and my Calathea table with 10 of them on it is approx 10 to 12 feet from the eastern window. They are all happy here and any closer would burn even in early morning light. I found this out with my first Calathea I bought a couple of years ago. a Rattlesnake one It was in the eastern window ( I read the label) and it burnt. So now I have them where they are with none of them getting any or very very few brown tips. So definitely a distance from what they recommend. Yes I read the labels now and make my own judgements with my plants. Ignoring labels when needed.
Amen to that!
I agreed- with some experience you can tell if a plant needs more or less light- i just move mine around accordingly.
I have a alocasia pink dragon it has never given me any issues but lately some of my stems shriveled and fall over..I cut them off and it's still actively growing new leaves...is the shriveling of the stems and flopping over with the leaves starting to yellow normal when it's time for the leaves to go?
I'm just going to sit here in case you get an answer because I have a new silver Dragon and I have yellow leaves but I have new leaves also.
Yeah the stem piece normally goes with the leaf. Might be a dormancy issue
@@SheffieldMadePlants My pink dragon is still putting out new leaves...I just figured it was the end of the road for the leaf
I have a question. I have a philodendron birkin mix. It’s got a central white / green spike coming out the top of its main woody trunk. However I overwatered it months ago and inside this spike is black, rotted plant matter. Can I cut or trim down this spike shoot thing? For it to then hopefully be able to grow new leaves ? As currently it’s doing nothing. Or would cutting it there shock and kill the plant? Thanks 🙏
I’d cut it back if it’s rotting. Should kick start it

Rethinking terra cotta pots. For me and the environment, I use them almost exclusively. They work out well for plants that need to dry out completely between watering. For plants that like constantly damp soil I like to keep them in a saucer of water as I can tell easily when they aren’t damp and have never had a problem with overwatering in terra cotta, thus never had fungus gnats. They also work very well with wick watering. Give terra cotta a rethink. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing!
Lux meters do not measure the full spectrum. Not accurate when measuring led light.
Gives you an idea
I think i finally defeated my fungus gnats with neem cake! You just mix it in a gallon of water, sit it overnight, and water the plants with it. It kills the larva and the adults don’t like it either so it’s a good time to squash or trap them when they all start flying around. Nematodes are probably more effective but i bought a huge bucket of neem cake for pretty cheap that will last me ages. Bonus- it has some nutrients and is a light fertilizer!
Thanks for the tip 👍
I've heard of neem powder and neem oil, but not neem cake. Can I ask where you got it from and possibly a link to it? Thanks!
@@CrazyPlantLady911 I got it on Amazon!
I think it’s the same as the powder but pressed into pellets… not sure exactly.
Well thats why im not a bottom watering fan and it takes much time and for gnants im used to them i stopped trying to get rid off i just use the traps to lessen them as possible
Very sensible 😁
Context. Im in Kenya. I have no idea what a fungus gnat is. But they seem to bother a lot of gardeners on your side of the pond. Why not use insecticide against them? If something bothered me that much, I'd whip out the can! Are fungus gnats resistant to RAID?.? 😂
I wish! Raid would kill the adults. The eggs live on

Over 500 million plastic pots and trays are sold every year and they all eventually end up in the landfill where they pollute our air, water and soil. The plastic pots take 500 years to break down creating methane gas which erodes the ozone layer. The environment is more important than your plants.
