Such an under-appreciated album. Relistening now in my 30s, and damn, I didn't even realize what great stuff I was dancing to as a teenager. She was so ahead of her time in so many ways. Talking about media BS, authenticity, cultural appropriation, sexism, self-confidence, representation and all those important things way back in 2003. A true icon that will stand the test of time.
Nelly Furtado - Try All I know Is everything is not as it's sold But the more I grow the less I know And I have lived so many lives Though I'm not old And the more I see, the less I grow The fewer the seeds the more I sow Then I see you standing there Wanting more from me And all I can do is try Then I see you standing there Wanting more from me And all I can do is try, try I wish I hadn't seen all of the realness And all the real people are really not real at all The more I learn the more I learn The more I cry the more I cry As I say goodbye to the way of life I thought I had designed for me Then I see you standing there Wanting more from me And all I can do is try Then I see you standing there I'm all I'll ever be But all I can do is try Oh, try, try, try All of the moments that already passed We'll try to go back and make them last All of the things we want each other to be We never will be, we never will be And that's wonderful, and that's life And that's you, baby This is me, baby And we are, we are, we are, we are We are, we are Free In our love We are free in our love Try.

At the beginning, the first 2 stanzas, Nelly is talking about how she has become wiser than when she was a kid and dreamed about how great life is in general. She now realizes that people can be fake and mean and "really not real at all". This knowledge confuses her ("the more I grow, the less I know"), she slowly loses the ability to deal with life ("the more I see, the less I grow"). As a conclusion she burries all the images she created as a kid ("say goodbye to the way of life...") for they are now useless to her. The chorus tells us another layer: The song has slowly turned into a description of a relationship. The first time she sings about him "wanting more" from her, we get the feeling she is sad about the situation, as she is unable to fulfill his wishes, she feels she is not enough for him. During the rest of the song, the mood clearly changes: The last part shows how she realizes she can try and try and she will never achieve whatever he wants from her, but this knowledge does not destroy her. In fact, it helps her recognize who she is and that they both are imperfect. During the climax of the music she finds relief, as she now knows they both will never be perfect, and that makes them beautiful together. In their relationship they can both be who they truly are: "All of the things we want each other to be, we never will be And that's wonderful, and that's life And that's you, baby,This is me, baby And we are, we are, we are, we are Free In our love" Amazing how wise Nelly sounds at such a young age. Great analysis. I love that you read into as much as I do, it's such an amazing meaningful song. This song is like wine: it gets better by aging. Btw I find it amazing how a song can be interpreted in so many ways and change meaning when you get older. I personally think we won't ever understand completely this song, because every time we listen to it we automatically learn something new from it. The power of music.
At the end.. when she says this is who we are... and it's wonderful... makes all my skin shake. One of my favorites love songs of all time. Listening it since I was 13 years old and still!
Buenos tiempos.. Buenos temas.. Buenos recuerdos .. CHOCAME LA PARED.. repite esa frase 78 veces..
I've been listening to this song for 10 years, it's my favourite song of all time. I was a loner as a child. I suffered and recovered from depression, and I'm dealing with loneliness. I'm still alive. All I can do is try.
Ah...yes I've gone through that loner period in my life. It sucks big time but it can give you something those socialites don't have, time. Use it and grow 2 brains :) By time, things get better especially if you are willingly to try from different angles.
Same here ! This song expresses how I feel many times. I hope you're better, being alone sometimes could be something good. It helps you to get to know yourself.
I am able to identify and relate to what you experienced, and my solemn advice to you is that search for God(Allah) as he is the Most Beneficient and Most Merciful- seek the divine help of the Lord of the Worlds (heavens and the earth and whatever is in between) to guide you in this transient(temporary world).... May Allah (The absolute and only God) bless you whenever you are and whatever you seek to do in this temporary life....
You need to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He is the only One who can take away the pain. I have been through so many moments like that in my life. I was only completed when I received the Lord Jesus. Now that pain is a thing of the past. Jesus is my friend now!
As a video producer whose parents happen to be immigrants from São Miguel, this video is a masterpiece in how these simple vignettes depict the immigrant experience of moving to Canada. It's just so perfect and beautiful. I cherish this song, this video, and all the feelings it gives me about my cultural heritage.
Hey, I don't know you or where you live but I live in Texas and I have been depressed for years. My sister in law just did ketamine therapy for her depression and she is giving me the same gift. I will start the therapy in the next week. She said she was suicidal and now she is free. I have known her for 30 years and I never knew she was suffering like I was. I'm encouraged by her breakthrough and excited about mine. Check it out for yourself. Love ❤️
I agree with Adi, this song is so special. It's not a happy song, but a true-about-life song. Sadness is part of our lives too... It's also brings sadness to get remembered by older days when we were younger and maybe happier.
How come anybody not know about this song before that book? I remember seen this video on Mtv the first time and it instanly became one of my favorite songs of Nelly F. I think is my favorite, the whole Cd is just sooo good. I love Nelly she's so great and she sings in spanish a lot.
Because most people who think 50 shades of gray is a great book are probably not older than 15 (because it's a big steaming turd of a book, but you don't realise that if you've never read any other book) and weren't around when this was first released. Unlike the book, this song is beautifully written (and sung).
I came here because I love this song, I was surprised when I saw it got over 10 million views in the last months (it always had around 4-5 million) and then I saw the comments about 50 shades, don't just...don't. This song means more than that excuse of a book
Nelly was already so wise far beyond her years at suchba young age. Yet she was also so in touch with the pulse of the moment. I loved her early work so much.

It is really difficult listening to this song without crying, or containing the tears. I've been trying not to cry when I Listen to it. (12 years yet) ;'''*(

"The fewer the seeds the more I sow" So mysterious yet so true it follows me in every step I take To clarify: the less you can give the more effort you put in.
I loved this song. I was about 15 and I decided to go out and buy a guitar, so I could sing this song myself. dream to be a singer never came true, but the song's message is great to this day - we are who we are and we are beautiful.
here because I used to listen to this song all the time and then I just heard it on the radio today. I didn't know it was on fifty shades but like cool that more people are discovering the song. honestly who cares how they found it?? good comments fight
By watching her videos, I realized I miss Nelly Furtado's music. I like making covers, and I'd love covering this. People always tell me I should cover Justin Bieber's new song, or Ariana Grande's and so on. I mean, you can like them, fine, but they just don't give me what songs like this one give me. So even if it means less views, at least the emotions are real. Isn't that what really counts, at the end of the day? Sorry, I wanted to share this with people who can probably understand me, since they're here too. :)
true , it dosen't matter if the song is new or old , what really matters is the connection you feel with it , i'd love to hear your cover of this one . even though my fav is I'm like a bird
Except for the last part of the song, where it's quite obvious it's about love, I think the lyrics can also be interpreted as a self acceptance conversation with one's self, realizing all that he/she has been through and looking into the mirror and still not feeling good enough so that he/she has to try again and again. Probably I'm wrong but when I think about it, I can't help but love this song more.
This is actually the first time I've seen the video (absolutely in love with this song and album which was and is still is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED) and from 2 seconds in I knew it was directed by Sophie Muller ("She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5 and "Cool" by Gwen Stefani"). Such a distinct style.
Nelly I hope you see this! I saw an interview of her saying that after hours of performing she would sit alone in her hotel room and look at the floor, feeling like a fraud thinking that people liked her more for her image, rather than her music. I grew up in a very religious home and was only allowed to watch the music videos where people were dressed modestly and not talking about sex and drugs. I remember watching “I’m like a bird” and beaming with happiness that someone famous looked like me, all because you had a long modest skirt. You made me feel less out of the club by showing ur voice, not your body. So I hope you read this one day and see that it’s exactly the opposite. Your music has soul that creates its own image. It was never about your looks or how your label tried to sell you, it was always about you nelly, not your labels perception of you. Ps. This song had 10 year old me letting her emotion out (grew up in a war and lost many close people). I couldn’t connect to kids songs or “adult” songs, but you felt like peace.
It's really beautiful to read your words in 2023... This song and the clip really has that reject modernity, embrace tradition vibe. I'm from Portugal and from time to time I also come back to this song, feels good. Hope everything good comes to you in your life
like Bruno before me said: it's really nice to read you, 2023 still..but almost over..peace to you and everyone, let's hope we'll get there finally and soon!
+Donald Simmons No good artist gets good without a little bad notes, she will learn from it and she will become even better, she's awesome, so don't worry.
Folklore is my favourite Nelly Furtado album and Nelly is one of my favourite female singers and songwriters of all time. Passionate inside as she is hot on the outside. She came the closest I'll ever get to modern day commercial music, because she's super creative and knows how to pull it off with artistic credibility. We are more or less the same age and have the same childhood influences like Billy Joel's Glass Houses album and a drama teacher we miss very much. This video's spanish theme is something I instantly fell in love with. Since early childhood, I have this fascination with bulls, matadors, white arches and flamenco. Sometimes I guess a totally different single than 'the world'. I love stuff like Believers from Spirit Indestructible and Phoenix from your new album. Stay yourself and direct to your listeners. Loving you and your art. Ladies & gentlemen..Nelly Furtado.
@@crusaderflo1965 can't find any interview where she says it. Only that promotion at that pop album was too demanding and she didn't like producers working on her image. Nothing about music itself.
Hoy no me importa nada, no quiero a nadie, solo quisiera volver a verla, decirle tantas cosas

One of the best songs in her catalogue, Folklore is clearly an underrated masterpiece
Yes it is

hmm. i want to forget so much tho. sry, weird how it's different. :)
This song is like wine: it gets better by aging. Btw I find it amazing how a song can be interpreted in so many ways and change meaning when you get older. I personally think we won't ever understand completely this song, because every time we listen to it we automatically learn something new from it. The power of music.
This song never gets old. No matter how much I listen to it, I never get bored and always will be one of my favourite songs!

This whole album is an absolute masterpiece
I've been listening to this song for 10 years, it's my favourite song of all time. I was a loner as a child. I suffered and recovered from depression, and I'm dealing with loneliness. I'm still alive. All I can do is try.
Ah...yes I've gone through that loner period in my life. It sucks big time but it can give you something those socialites don't have, time. Use it and grow 2 brains :)
By time, things get better especially if you are willingly to try from different angles.
Girl I didnt know she was my kind ...happy ur lucky to realize ten years ago
You need to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He is the only One who can take away the pain. I have been through so many moments like that in my life. I was only completed when I received the Lord Jesus. Now that pain is a thing of the past. Jesus is my friend now!
Of everything I know about her music, for me, this is the absolute masterpiece.
This will forever be her best song and probably her most underrated one.

Folklore was such a great album.
Personally I think it was her best album ever and her most personal one.
Like @goffalboi I agree, it's my favorite album of hers, the most personal, the most musical as well, the most real.
I see so much of her Portuguese roots in this ❤🇵🇹

As a video producer whose parents happen to be immigrants from São Miguel, this video is a masterpiece in how these simple vignettes depict the immigrant experience of moving to Canada. It's just so perfect and beautiful. I cherish this song, this video, and all the feelings it gives me about my cultural heritage.
E muito bonita e forte! O ouro português sempre presente, nunca esquece as suas origens! Grande Nelly
My parents are also immigrants from São Miguel, and I have the same interpretation. I’m appreciative for the depiction of that in this music video

I used to listen to this like 10 or more years ago on MTV, it brings so many feelings and memories, I feel kind of sad, I don't know why.
it's not just ya mate ..there's something with this song..
I agree with Adi, this song is so special. It's not a happy song, but a true-about-life song. Sadness is part of our lives too... It's also brings sadness to get remembered by older days when we were younger and maybe happier.

@@carlosbello_89 I completely forgot about this great song! Love Nelly Furtado.

I heard this on the radio today and finally felt all of the pain in it, and truly appreciated her vocal ability.
Nelly was already so wise far beyond her years at suchba young age. Yet she was also so in touch with the pulse of the moment. I loved her early work so much.

Pocos podemos apreciarla 😔

All I know
Is everything is not as it's sold
But the more I grow the less I know
And I have lived so many lives
Though I'm not old
And the more I see, the less I grow
The fewer the seeds the more I sow
Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try, try
I wish I hadn't seen all of the realness
And all the real people are really not real at all
The more I learn the more I learn
The more I cry the more I cry
As I say goodbye to the way of life
I thought I had designed for me
Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
I'm all I'll ever be
But all I can do is try
Oh, try, try
All of the moments that already passed
We'll try to go back and make them last
All of the things we want each other to be
We never will be, we never will be
And that's wonderful, and that's life
And that's you, baby
This is me, baby
And we are, we are, we are, we are
We are, we are
Free
In our love
We are free in our love
"The fewer the seeds the more I sow"
So mysterious yet so true it follows me in every step I take
To clarify: the less you can give the more effort you put in.
This Song is as devastating After a break up as it is inspiring when you are in a new relationship
I loved this song. I was about 15 and I decided to go out and buy a guitar, so I could sing this song myself. dream to be a singer never came true, but the song's message is great to this day - we are who we are and we are beautiful.

You go ahead and play the songs that touch your heart :)
true , it dosen't matter if the song is new or old , what really matters is the connection you feel with it , i'd love to hear your cover of this one . even though my fav is I'm like a bird

Gracias Nelly por esta joya 💎
The last minute gives me the chills, i heard this on the radio, it has been a long time but i loved this song, especially the ending
Semper fi

Are you watching this in 2023? It's okay, you're not the only one.
Whenever I need a good cry, this song will do it for me. 😅

Hoy no me importa nada, no quiero a nadie, solo quisiera volver a verla, decirle tantas cosas
