Just bought a 2 wt euro nymph rod and the retailer said it works pretty well as a dry fly rod as well so we went outside the shop and had a cast with 5 wt line on it and the loading was just so nice and the accuracy was unreal, I was stunned that you could put that combo together and have it work PERFECTLY!!
Agreed on all. The one caveat that's worth mentioning (and may not be popular) but as our rods age and remain serviceable fishing tools, these damn lines get heavier. I have a certain brand that I love that are perfect fishing tools but when I get a new 4 wt. line (salt is another topic) I find that I HAVE to underline.Of course there are many variables; fly size, water conditions, etc. but generally speaking I love the rods I have but need to continually find I have to underline.
I have a 4wt 9’ Sage and I put RIO trout 3wf on it and I honestly wished I’d try it sooner. Experimenting is okay. Everybody does things differently. It’s what makes us FLY GUYS.
Casting power and line size establishes what rods cast overall best. Fly Rods that cast line properly have to use line weight to load the rod. Without having enough line-weight to load the rod, it is harder to make short casts on small streams with limited room for casting using a rod with a stiff action. This is also the same if fishing open water with unlimited room for casting. If the rod action is to light, it will not cast as far if to limber. The line weight is essential to getting the performance you want from the rod. A fast sinking line casts much different from a floating line on the rod you use. This also relates to rod length and leader length. If you use a 9-foot rod on streams that are no bigger than 15-feet wide fishing forest streams it becomes evident there is better answer. Why use 80 feet of fly line on your reel and 100 feet of backing on small streams? The leader that casts best is one of equal length or shorter than the rod length you are using regardless if you are casting dry flies or wets. It also hooks more strikes than longer ones will. 🤔🤨
So I bought a cheap Cortland 5-6 wt -8’ rod and reel combo from Walmart, the action the rod is really stiff could I jump up to a 7 wt , weight forward line to help it cast better 🤔 I’m located in the Tampa Bay fl, Area and found out that there is permit and bone fish in the area could I use the Walmart special with that 7 wt line to fish for them ? What’s your favorite crab pattern for perm’s and bones?
Im wondering if underlining would be beneficial for long distance casting such as running a 6wt orvis all purpose saltwater on my fast action 7wt for 50ft casts in saltwater.
That had to be the most senseless information video I have ever watched ! Yes I should have stop watching short into it. So when I get all the negative comments about my comment I deserve it ! Yes I should have stopped watch and move on . But I just couldn't stop it was so full of ....... well I dont know what .
So perfectly well said!!! Like most situations, nothing is really set in stone. Thanks!!

Thanks Tom. That was a cracking video. It's nice to be able to get away with over/under weighting from time to time.

Great advice and explained very well.....Thank you Tom

Thanks for the info Tom. I have a question, could I underline one of my fiberglass rods to get it to flex less and in turn cast quicker?
