Thank you for the video, life saving.. I’m dealing with a noise that is coming from the timing chain at 70k miles. Do you have a sound video of the timing chain tensioner noise it was making?
I'm not familiar with Mercedes-Benz. Is since this procedure usually done when replacing timing chain and must use special tool to hold the cams from moving?
I just finished replacing chain and guides, timing is dead on, but engine runs rough and ultimately dies. Is this a sign of incorrectly setting the tensioner?
It was unclear when i first watched this and held the other camshaft (inboard) while torqueing the crank bolt. Should i be fine if i torque it using the other or leave as is?

Hello, my m272 350cgi rattles 2 seconds but only on a warm start feeling like the oil drips down . No rattle on cold. Is the tensioner at fault? I think i can change it myself like you did, i have the tools. Its 100euro for me tho quite expensive, but if it fixes it i will do. Thanks pls reply!
Mine does the same. Only on warm starts when the engine has been sitting about 1 hour. I don't think it is the tensioner, because then it would be more likely to rattle from cold when the oil has drained away from the tensioner. From what I hear this is a common issue and no-one really knows what it is. I have decided to live with it. After 6 years it is still the same. No worse.

Seems like a good way to wear out the plastic guides -> more expensive repair, from chain banging around on them. I see guides costing $2 each but getting to them!

Hi mb ml350 , i just installed timing chain tensioner but the way i relased it by pressing it in , tip popped out and i stick this inside the engine. Someone told me to do so . Now i have 2 codes CEL p0016 and p0017 . What to do ?
Bro I'm about to do the timing chain tensioner. 2009 m272 engine. I've done everything. Oil change, cam sensors, cam adjuster magnets. Cam harness, crankshaft position sensor. This is the last attempt. I'll come back and let you know. My codes are p0017 and p0016. Car drives
I have a 20 year old M113 engine, 150K miles. I hope the procedure is about the same as this video. While the serpentine belt is loose is it easy to replace it? Also wondering same question as Grzegorz Palak, whether they can be popped out first. Actually my tensioner hasn't arrived yet so I don't know if this is even an issue for my engine/part.
Yeah ,like what the hell. You cant give a tutorial without demonstration of the desired result , everybody is saying good video without even knowing that it was done correctly. The final result is 90% of importance in the entire video and you leave it out ..
Hello.whats is the reason of tensioner replacement? When i start my cold m273 emngine li hear chain noise for 10 seconds and after noise disapears. Could be tenssioner fault?
Rattle noise at cold start = chain tensioner and/or bad oil quality in most cases. To make sure the timing chain is not stretched, remove the magnets and control the markings that must be adjusted when engine is at 305°. Chain tensioners are under 100$, worth replacing, and the procedure is quite easy. It's a 1 hour job. I do it about every 50k miles to not give a chance to bad luck to happen ;)
The noise is about 3 to 5 seconds from a cold start and not heard all day long. This could also be the O ring on the engine oil suction tube, take out the oil pan, remove the air filtes and lift the engine about 3 inches using a a pipe and a jack and change the O ring on the plastic suction tube, its about $6.00 and you can do it yourself.
just did my2008 R350, smfh. Everything went smooth until it came time to release the tensioner by rotating the crankshaft backwards while hold the back side engine. I didnt hear the Tensioner release & it was much harder to rotate C.Shaft bckwards. i stood on the tool & it wouldnt rotate bckwrds. Im so pissed & depressed autoHeads rt now I need yall help. 😆Calling all Grease Monkeys
Great video that’s exactly what I have to do in my Mercedes ml350 because it makes a rattling noise at start when the engine is cold
How'd it go?
Finally someone showing the right way. this is the same procedure for a om648?

Awesome, nice job 👍
Tsb says no consequential damage expected. So it's not necessary to do check valve and tensioner upgrade?

Did u ever find out mines has that prob aswell
Hello.whats is the reason of tensioner replacement? When i start my cold m273 emngine li hear chain noise for 10 seconds and after noise disapears. Could be tenssioner fault?
it could be stretched chain, or worn out idler sprocket, etc.
last m273 engines were produced 8 years ago, so they are getting old.
My personal reason is oil leaks around it
On the MB AMG M156 that would usually be cam adjusters…
