Worked perfectly!! Needed to replace one for a customer because of the serious oil leak coming from the tensioner, behind the alternator. I knew there was a procedure to unlock the tensioner after installation, and I am grateful that you covered that. Thank you. Side note: yes the rear cam is held by a T-55, and when you rotate the engine the 90 degrees clockwise to set the chain, you should hear the tensioner ratcheting out (click click click). So you know it unlocked.
That is for the 3.5l m276 engine. This 3.0l m272 engine has one chain tensioner on the side of the block while the m276 has multiple under the cam caps.
Hi, I have the same rattling sound on my E350 (2010). But I hear it only when the car is driven and then parked for 1 to 3 hours and then start the engine. Do you think that is the chain tensioner problem?
Since I bought my car in 2019 it always rattles on cold starts for 2-3 seconds. Haven’t bothered it as I’ve researched this and it’s considered normal. Car runs great at 114k miles, just did the oil filter housing gaskets and oil cooler gasket. Will need to do motor mounts next.
Only the first five seconds after the engine is started from cold is the noise heard until oil pressure reaches the tensioner. Especially near freezing temps. Come to find out Its considered normal in m272 engines. The chain was replaced and the cam Adjuster"s" had pretension. The check engine light will come on if the Cam Adjusters aren't setting the valve timing correctly.
@@NK1794 , I have exact same car though not same problem. My problem is DTC 1208 though not necessarily the balance shaft. By monitoring live data, I know that the right intake cam adjuster would stuck open at 36.2 degree advanced after cruising at high speed. It won't return back to normal until car stopped and restarted. This is due to the area around the dowel pin where it meets the front plate was worn off. Have you seen and/or replace right intake cam adjuster due to that condition? And if I do, do I have to replace the timing tensioner as well? Thank you.
it sounds like some friction maybe lubrication might be missing on some of the bolts or pulley.. Maybe the serpentine belt is flaw, I wonder if you ever found the problem in 2019... How many miles did it have, when he notice the grinding sound? Also question, Did you also have to fix his ESL/EIS on the ignition?
Jason Lewis I think the problem is only with this particular engine. I believe it had to do with lack of oil during start up. The engine is really smooth after it starts up, no rattling noise whatsoever. All the belts and pulleys are in excellent shape.
It's gotten better. The noise is still there but not as loud and at a shorter duration. The wife is OK with that. :-) so I can live with that. I will replace the the chain and and guides at 100K miles.
@@NK1794 hi there my C180 w204 has this issue right now. I am due to sell it shall I just change the tensioner or tensioner and belt? 40k miles on the clock. Thanks
I have the exact same sound , my mechanic is telling me its a crankshaft !!! which Im really not convinced about . The sound started 2 years ago and it started to become more frequent (around two hours of cooling ) , could it be a timing chain ? What should i do !
Ghaben Mustafa If it’s been 2 years and it’s not getting any worse and if I were you I would leave it alone. If your car has a lot of miles and IF you plan to keep it for a long time I would go ahead and change the chain and the tensioner for a peace of mind but I would not expect the sound to go away though. I think that’s just the way the engine is.
NK1794 at the beginning the sound was heard only after a night but now the sound comes after two hours otherwise the engine sound pretty good after a few seconds, the car has 110k miles
Do you know how much Mercedes would charge roughly and how but did this cost you? Mine has like a knocking sound and I’ve been told it’s lifters, left camshaft, timing I don’t which one tho and I know forsure it’s not rodknock so yea...
I have no clue how much the dealership would charge. I have all the tools so the cost was for the tensioner, $122.00 from Pelican Parts. By the way, the sound is still there even with the new tensioner but it's no as loud. I'm begin to think it's a design flaw. It's not getting enough lubrication when it sits for awhile.
The noise doesnt go away completely but if your car has a lot of miles you should change it anyway. If the tensioner goes bad the chain could skip and that would be bad for the engine. If you plan to keep your car for a long time would be another good reason to do it.
I saw this procedure by mercedes, but i don't know why they do this angle? And after installing the tensioner why to do adjust the crank and camshafts?
What year is your car? Cause from what I'm seeing the 2014 c300 with engine m276 mated to 4matic trans is a 3.5l v6 60 degree angle motor replacing the optioned 90 degree engine (m272). This part exists on a m272 motor but not the m276. is this correct does anyone know?

He rotated the engine CCW no?
@@jrgsxr33 yes, to unlock the chain tensioner.
unfortunately these basic tensioners are non ratcheting, just a spring.
@@glasser2819 no, the one I had, needed to be pushed all the way to zero to unlock it. It has teeth on the rod. So, not just a spring.
Don't forget 40 degrees on the crank pulley first!
How much this job cost?
God Bless you for this video - thank you sir very much.
Good evening Sr. Have a Q. What the size of torx . T55 , T 60 etc. thanks.
what was the mileage on this car? Year of this car?
What mileage do you recommend to swap out?
There is now a tech bulletin calling to replace upper chain tensioners and installing check valves to keep the oil from draining back
That is for the 3.5l m276 engine.

I have same problem
So this means I don't have change the whole chain ⛓️ just the screw ?

if you can share the link of part or part number for buying so Ok for everyone. thank you
have you some videos from the sounds after the installation? and how long did it take you to replace it?
Sorry no video for that. The sound is still there just not as loud. I think you should be able to get it done between 1-2 hours.
Hey I was wondering what type size bit used at back engine when you unlocked tensioner with torque wrench in front at the same time
I cant find anyting for sure but I think its a T100 Torx
Torx T60
My timing belt tensioner is bad on my Mercedes C350?? Does anyone have any idea about how much that will cost to get fixed??
300
The sound goes away for a little bit after swapping out with a new tensioner. And then returns again after a short time.
its your camshaft adjuster most likely

you do a great job right there. Good research for torques... on WIS? Hard to learn

Awesome video and good job too, Thank you for shearing.👍
So did this fix the noise? I’ve read a lot of people saying this sound is “normal” on the MB V6.
i have a 2008 e350 with a 3.5 engine. is this the same tensioner and procedure?
Did it fix the rattle
Thank you. Great video
Did this fix the issue? Also does the timing chain and guides need to be replaced?
