    In theaters March 2014.
    Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield-on the sea-as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
    "300: Rise of an Empire" pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

    People are too quick to scrutinize 300 for being a testosterone fueled portrayal of nonsensical violence, but fail to understand that 300 is an artistic portrayal of a chain of historical events. Historical movies are all too seldom in this day and age. It is nice to see that people are still involved with history.

    • @CezarMS1
      @CezarMS1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good way of looking at it, but 300 was not particularly historically accurate. It was 300 spartans, PLUS 7000 soldiers from allied nations. They WERE insanley outnumbered, however, and the kids WERE put into rigorous warrior training from age 7 till age 30, when they were allowed to finally leave the barracks. The biggest flaw to this movie however, was that there was an epic-scale naval fight that they barely showed for like 2 seconds in the entire movie. . . so hate to say it it was more about the amazing testosterone-filled violence than actual history ^_^

    • @Ozymandias88
      @Ozymandias88 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Oh so is invading a country not attacking it? It was the largest Empire and it did give a lot to the world. The Persians had a great civilization too.. no denying that. But the fact still remains that they were also repressing some countries which is why the Ionians asked for Greek help to be freed and why the Egyptians welcomed Alexander as a liberator from the Persians.
      They DID attack and they lost. It's not a conspiracy plot against the good Persians. It's a story about how their mighty Empire clashed with another civilization and it crumbled.

    • @Ozymandias88
      @Ozymandias88 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** That's as stupid as saying "when you punch someone, you don't attack him, you just punch him technically".
      An invasion is an attack against another country by military means. You can use a plethora of words such as offense, intrusion etc etc and it's still an attack.

    People need to get their heads out of their asses when it comes to the politics of these movies. The Persians are depicted for what the Greeks saw them as, not for what they actually were. The Greeks weren't perfect either. I'm Greek myself and I think that both had a tremendous civilization that affect our daily life today. Both did many great good and terrible things. Learn from the bad, celebrate the good.

      VERY VERY VERY loosely based on historic fact mind you. First one wasn't even close to accurate at all. In the actual battle of Thermapolae there weren't even close to 300 soldiers. There were thousands of Greeks that joined the Spartan vanguard.

    • @bambitramp5943
      @bambitramp5943 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@xXGamerXDarkXx VERY VERY VERY is a little harsh dude... The numbers were almost certainly exaggerated in the movie, but also in many historic accounts. There's a lot of debate to be had around the subject. This was an epic battle though my friend. Even if you go with the high/low numbers favouring either side, you cannot help but be impressed with the tenacity of the Spartans and their bad ass king Leonidas... Herodotus tells us that the "God king", sitting atop his mobile throne (from which he watched/judged the battles) sent wave after wave, thousands apon thousands of Persian soldiers at the war born Greeks. All were driven back. Xerxes is supposed to have got so mad having seen this, that he sent his own personal guard, the Immortals, to deal with the situation. They to were driven back... Some accounts say many of the other Greeks fled, others dispute this. The size difference in the soldiers themselves, even some of the crazy animals (not monsters, in most cases...) were reported to have been used against the small band of Spartans. The movie gives you a pretty good feel for the political side as well and what it must have been like from the Greek perspective anyway. The ancient oracles they had were a 'real' thing. The hardcore training of soldiers from an early age. There was also reportedly a greek/persian spy (the cripple and the guy from the wire in the movie) who betrayed Sparta, though no one is sure. Anyway, I think I've rattled off enough similarities. Just know I'm not sticking up for the movie or anything, even though it was good. More the actual Spartans. It was one of those decisive moments in history, had a few brave men not stood up for their ideals in the face of almost overwhelming defeat, we might not even be here. Something else I just remembered to end on. If you don't believe how bad ass these dudes were... The scene where Xerxes sends an emissary to the Spartans and tells them "...Our arrows shall blot out the sun!" and the Spartan replies (with the best one liner ever) "Then we shall fight in the shade..." Was quoted straight out the history books.

      300 is based of a comic series, not history directly. I've never read the comics, so I don't know how true Zack Snyder is to the them. You can blame him for bringing this twisted portrayal of history into popular culture, but he didn't come up with it.

    For those who are complaining because of the women leading the battles. In the actual historical fact, Gorgo of course didn't lead any battle but Artemisia did. She was a fearless warrior that stood out in the battle of Salamis so much that made Xerxes say, My men have become women, and my women men.

    • @Irigoni14
      @Irigoni14 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well....true....she was a warrior and she made Xerxes say so...Dont get me wrong , what you said is historical correct but i find it funny that he said it because he actually saw wrong....he saw her royal ship destroying another ship which , of course, he considered to be Greek....But it wasnt, Artemisia in order to escape from a Greek ship that was pursuing her, destroyed a persian ship that was blocking her way. That was double win for her, Greeks that knew that she is of Greek origin considered that she switched sides and so stopped the pursuit and Xerxes who was far away saw her destroying a ship and he thought that finally someone in his fleet succeded to sink a Greek ship...

    • @MatronMalice2012
      @MatronMalice2012 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree this is what happened exactly. Artemisia was not only capable in battle but she was also very inteligent. The destruction of the Persian ship was a genius strategic move. Furthermore if Xerxes have listened to her from the beginning maybe the outcome of the battle would have been completely different. Thank God he didn't and Greeks won!!!

      LeonAmarantos After the persian invasions, the Greeks invaded Persia, burning their cities, taking their gold, killing countless. When Persia captured a nation, they did none of that. Seriously you're not implying the kind Persians just conquered all those lands without murdering and marauding the people, are you? Because if you are you are, you are either foolish, uneducated or lying. They conquered their lands by force and death. They occupied those lands and kept them with that threat of massive power holding the conquered people in order. They had numerous rebellions that they killed,enslaved , castrated the young children after destroying the cities that rebelled. So cut the BS that the Persians were so kind and gentle. They Weren't. They were Conquerors. They tried to Conquer Greece and Failed. So Greece came after them. Tit for Tat.

    • @DariushMJ
      @DariushMJ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Boukephalos1 Sorry, I must have been unclear. I am not applying that the Persians were at some kind of moral high ground. I am just saying that portraying the persians as *monsters* and the greeks as *heroes* is wrong. The Persians were at least as civaliced as the Greeks. Also, while the Greeks burned the villages, stole the gold and captured huge amounts of slaves of their captured lands, Persia was more tolerant. One example is in terms of religion: The Persians did not force their religion, language or traditions upon others. Neither did they burn palaces and villages for tha sake of erasing the memory of the previous government, just as the Greeks did.

    Funny Historical Fact:
    You see the Athenian protagonist? As you probably may know, he's Themistocles, the great General and Politician who was the main responsible for the outcome of those two simultaneous battles (Artemisium and Thermopyhlae) and others, since the time he engaged in a campaign of political investment in Naval Military, after learning about Persian strategies.
    Did you knew that after all that, various Greek rulers and influent politicians (including Spartan) turned against him after some decisions he made that looked "too revolutionary"?
    Themistocles went to live in exile in Argos, but his "old time friends" kept conspirating against him, accusing him of crimes that he never commited.
    At last, it's said that the Great Hero "lost faith" in his homeland representatives (he actually fled from Greece in terror), and went to ASIA, where he served Artaxerxes I (King of PERSIA and son of XERXES I !!!) for the rest of his life. XP

      it is well known that the greek city states fought each other all the time, sometimes preferring to ally with persians or romans in order to kill fellow greeks. As a matter of fact the strongest persian units were their greek units. And many generals of persian army too, like Artemisia, or Memnon, the opponent of Alexander the Great.
      Also in Athens they had a law which forced them once a year to vote for exile of the most powerful man for 10 years, in order to avoid dictatorship. That was called ostracism, and that is how themistocles was exiled.

      @hercules.a 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I know from my history book (that I had 2 years ago) Themistocles was exiled from Greece so he travelled to Persia in order to make Xerxes follow an other strategy with the help of a friend who was serving Xerxes.That way Xerxes would go attack from the sea from a way that it was actually a "trap".Xerxes' army was defeated in that battle because Themistocles actually tricked him.We can say that Themistocles had everything well planned :P (sry for my bad English)

    OK guys, i know i might offend some people, but i'm gonna say it; i know that this movie is historical friction and is not showing the actual events AS they happened, but trust me, if you're Greek and you're watching this movie, it's A MILLION TIMES MORE AWESOME!!!! I mean, your goosebumbs get goosebumbs!!!! (P.S. I'd like to apologize to the Iranians for the historical inaccuracies, but we have nothing to do with this movie, Hollywood has... I have huge respect to both civilizations, Greek and Persian!!! Greetings from Greece!!!)

    For anyone wondering why people are debating about the nature of both empires or why this is called propaganda; Persia is of course now day's Iran and the Greeks in this case represent not just Europe but the West. The last film was criticised by Iranians for betraying them negatively and famously Greeks are hailed as the defenders of democracy, and therefore the savour of west ideals. So Eastern nations see this film as indoctrinating the idea that the West = good, Iran = Bad. And if you not keeping up with the history/politics, Iran and the West don't really like each other.

    • @Rosebunse
      @Rosebunse 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but it also looks like this movie may rectify at least a little bit of that. I mean, Persia was really freaking cool back in the day. You can't blame them for being pissed off.

      Michael Spears One could even say today we are not democratic as teenagers don't get to vote nor do prisoners, and one could argue that a true democracy should allow anyone to run not just those born in the confines of a nation. Point being is that what is democratic can change over time. So really you must ask were they democratic by the standards of their period. I would say yes others may disagree.

      This is a little off-topic, but in my opinion it's a little insane if some man with a home, salary of $90,000, two kids and a really good job can have the same vote as a crack-whore with no home and barely legible and illiterate.

      That reason right there is actually the reason for the Electoral College system. The uneducated populace will vote basically for whoever is the loudest side and will help them the most, so the elections aren't done based off of popular vote.

    Ancient Persians were nothing like what they made them in the film. Slavery was banned in Achaemenid Empire, freedom of religion and human right were first found by Cyrus the great of Persia! The bullshit of democracy mentioned in the both film is a joke. Out of all the Ancient Greek city-states, Athens depended the most on slave labor, while the real-life Achaemenid Empire did not practice slavery. Athens also distinguished itself from its neighbors by granting women absolutely no legal rights. The Achaemenids, in the meantime, built roads and infrastructure, ensured religious freedom, established a postal service, and generally set the standard for large governments for centuries to come. This is the work of the Jews in Hollywood to make evil picture of Iranians.

      TeRrOrBlAdEgr have you ever read history ?, Have you ever opened a book ? Don't believe whatever you see on TV. Maybe Iran nowadays have many political issues but Iran is considered the first country where human rights were created more than 3000 years ago and Iran was one of the rare countries in history for not having slaves. Unfortunately most people are slaves made by media. So don't judge when you have zero knowledge.
