Fincher is the first director I heard who really acknowledged he doesn’t do everything.
He said directing a movie is like painting a masterpiece, the canvas is 30 feet from you and there’s 40 people all holding the brush at the same time.
what he meant was probably "directing a movie with HOLLYWOOD money", because I can name plenty of directors that will want (and get) complete control over their movies. While I like Fincher's work a whole lot I think Tarantino was right in pointing out a difference between what he does and what Fincher (and many others) do. Regardless the quality of the end-product, There is a really big, no a HUGE difference between what we could call a 'writer/director' and a 'director' and a big difference between a 'filmmaker' and a 'director' as well. Tarantino fits into both formers, Fincher in the latters.

The filmmaker vs director thing is just the same as saying "I do real art" in opposition to doing commercial movies.
Tarantino may become a real artist the day he stops stealing entire plots and scenes. Tarantino is a scammer.
I tell people this all the time...that a good filmmaker has to be a great storyteller .. because a room full of strangers has to feel the same way...all at the same time.
Unfortunately, some movies being released currently ain’t that good "story-wise” but their cinematography, vfx, acting etc.. is on point.
Im acctually studying my last year of filmmaking in high school right now and im planning my last project right now. The most recent movies have really been just some entertainment rather than feelings/experience, which i understand movie are, feelings and experience. If i continue my path in the film industry i want people to feel the main character feel, or be feeling they are sitting in the same situation.

Fincher defines brilliantly what cinema is meant to be about.
Man, The Killer. Hope you guys have seen it. It's Fincher compressed but still focused as hell. That kind of a story. Could have been a stupid, run-of-the-mill action film, just like a dance can be someone wiggling. With Fincher it's like the highest form of disciplined, controlled, exuberant, classical dance. One of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. So action, yes, no apologies from Fincher, but have him make a thriller like Seven and we've all seen the results.
My respect for this man is ♾️
Listening to him talk about the art is something else. Can tell his knowledge is so deep.
I can confidently say fincher and Tarantino are the all time great film makers!
What about Bergman, Tarkovsky, Bresson, Dreyer, Kieslowski, Bela Tarr, etc.

What he's saying is that you need to explain your film if you want box office. That's why David Lynch has trouble with funding/backers. He won't go there. He's a true artist.

What Fincher appears to do consistently is provide a dark backdrop of a story, Whether it's a serial killer, a wife being diabolical, or a young male going insane while have a relationship with his alter ego, he always begins from a dark place. Then the cinematographer can create the color in that darkness, which is what Fincher is known for. This is what makes him interesting. He's never interested in lighting a sitcom stage, at all. If the script and the actors are congruent, they have chemistry, then Fincher, like he said fills in the little details. His fear is probably being boring. Shooting a scene and turn boring really quick if it doesn't have that personality the audience will be interested in. He gave the Dragon Tattoo no time for boring visuals as the character was complicated and emotionally connecting with the audience and morphing into a superhero per se, even though that was never her intention, and that's what made it work. The best characters the audience feels genuine about are the reluctant heroes, because the director knows the audience will connect and you can branch out into other areas of the premise of the story or the scene. He's very clever about staying in his lane, as this has been his consistent decision making his whole career. This is why Ben Button was the least interesting as a story, but visually stunning.

Many moons ago, I was deciding if I should write a song about the hypocrisy of puritanism. The first 7 seconds of this video (when I saw it on the Dragon Tattoo commentary) was the tipping point for me to finally make it, because I've always said the same exact thing. Always been a huge Fincher fan. Looking forward to The Killer.
I'm a fan of his but his films are hit and miss in equal measure? I think he's a stupendous technician; his films look and sound better than anyone's with the exception of Wes Anderson's (both directors very different). If it's true that David says he never listened to anyone it underlines narcissism; me, me, me. I like to learn from other great and greater talents; as actor Charles Bronson once said of Robert Aldrich, 'no man can know everything'. I think David still has elements of a reactionary youthful film maker which seems to be reducing and we should soon see a more mature mind leading to greater stand out films? He needs to watch that he doesn't become another Ridley Scott as David's films increasingly look identical! Always thanks to him for giving me/us films that we always enjoy returning to.

He always comes across as though his narcissism is a little too high; they can't stand listening to anyone else! They know it all which cannot be the case. I went to film school which was a mistake as all I did was try and side step the endless narcissists and sociopaths. I should have stayed at home and... typed... which I now do and works well for me.
I disagree with his notion of violence needing to be portrayed as “bad” or not a “joke”. Nuance exists
I think he just means in HIS movies he wants violence to be hard to watch and not enjoyable. Not that it needs to be like that in all movies

Violence and strong language are two things that turn me off anyone's work which is a reason I avoid some of David's films.

His worst film is Alien 3.
I think it could have been good. I read that there was quite a bit of interference from the studio and encouraged to be more conventional or something along those lines.
True. But it wasn't so bad either
20th Century Fox took the film away from him. If you watch any of his DVD's/Blu-Rays on video, the only director's commentary track that he doesn't have is on that particular film. Did you ever get a chance to check out the alternate version where the first one infected is an ox instead of a dog?
They took his soul/innocence right at the go. He hasn't looked back since.

He is not an artist. He is just a film maker. David Lynch, Andrey Tarkovsky, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrzej Żuławski, Lars von Trier, those are big artists. Fincher is just a Hollywood dummy, who makes blockbusters, glamorous but forgetful.
I am not a huge Fincher fan but I disagree 100%. His movies have a depth and a style to it.
I also find very questionable that you find David Lynch to be better than him...

What depth lol? His movies has straightforward narrative and Hollywood clichés. His interpretation of the girl with the dragon tattoo is just braindead copycat of Swedish movie.
With a top 5 like Fight Club, Seven, Zodiac, Gone Girl and Social Network..... hes one of the best directors of all time, and Tarkovsky + Von Trier = snoozefests. Only saw Jodorowsky's most famous film and it was shit. Never heard of Zulawski but probably for good reason. Fincher is standing strong with Tarantino, FF Coppola, Scorsese, Villeneuve, Michael Mann, Sergio Leone, James Cameron, Nolan, Coen's, Eastwood, Spike Lee, Kubrick, PTA, and Sam Mendes as the best directors of all time pal...
There is unbelievable artistry in all of Fincher's films.
