For water crossings in cold temps, I just wear a pair of DexShell waterproof socks all day long. Keeps my feet warm and dry.

Yeah, unfortunately those don't work for either of us when doing long days (especially a string of them). Over the years we've honed shoe & sock combos that allow us to do lots of miles without feet problems, and waterproof socks got ejected pretty early on. I am not sure if it's the material itself or the fact that they retain sweat (and, specifically, salt) that tends to lead to blisters for us both when doing >20 miles. Meanwhile the only downside of just tromping through streams is that we whine more!

Allison here - sorry for the slow reply, Cory! Joe and I love doing long days on trails. I find hiking before the sun rises to after it sets to be good for building gratitude for regular life. Can't wait to get back out on a trail again.

Great first day! I am planning on doing a through hike on the R2R, probably early February. I was concerned about water, as I was near the Garden of the Gods in late October, and everything was so dry! It was also quite cold - and I camped at one of your featured locations over Halloween! But, on your video, there looked like more than enough water! Looking forward to your Day 2!

In the spring you will have zero problem finding water. In fact, you may find more than you bargained for! The creek crossing just before Petticoat Junction (day 2) was almost waist deep and cooooold. Have a great hike and let us know if you need any details about the trail.

You make a great team. This trail is on my 2023 list. I am hoping to find a hiking partner as mine, my youngest daughter, is heading off to college. My dear husband has not joined me backpacking yet. The idea of sleeping outside does not appeal to him, but your approach with the van and car may be something he would consider.

Ahh, Thank you, Cynthia!! Allison here - Good luck on your 2023 River to River section hike. Please email me (crelatia at gmail dot com) if you want more details about our experience Spring of 2022 (when we filmed this). Over the past year, Joe and I have started doing some overnight hikes where we hike to a hotel or airb&b, then keep hiking the next day - Many Rail Trails are already set up for this type of travel for bikers. We did this for a section of the GAP (gaptrail.org/) trail in Oct 21 and on the NCT through Kalkasksa - plus we have plans for doing some on the Katy trail in MO. If you hike the rail trails on the shoulder seasons for bikers then the trails and amenities are not too busy. It's a kinda luxury way to rough it. :)

Allison, thank you so much for your email. I have couple of questions already in mind to ask. I just wanted to tell you before I forget to check out the Greenbrier River trail in WV. It was my first thru hike experience. It is a rail trail. Campsites are right on the side of h to e trail but there are also some airb&bs right on the trail. It is absolutely beautiful but no Wi-Fi cuz the National space observatory is there.

Great video! Are there many hikers who prefer to cross streams and rivers barefoot to keep their socks and shoes dry? Im gearing up for my first trip and I want to avoid wet shoes and socks at all costs whenever possible lol

Hey Zakk! IAllison here - hope you have a great adventure! I am sure there are hikers who take off their shoes or look for better places to cross the creek beds where they can keep their feet dry... I'm just soooo slow at taking my shoes off and puttig them back on and I don't mind wet feet with the right socks (socks that dry fast - usually smart wool in winter and darn toughs in summer; Joe uses drimax most of the time). From my (limited) observation on the R2R trail the spring and early summer is more likely to have wet trails and water crossings (more drinking water); and the late summer and fall will have less stream crossings (less drinking water). Let us know how your trip goes!
