Yes! This is actually my favorite kind of "reviews..." so often I've found that people reviewing cameras get so caught up in the build structure and the features that they forgot to really showcase WHAT the camera CAN DO. So I love this!!! Yes, please do more. We can find so many videos out there that talk about the camera itself, but seeing someone that we admire or look up to - USE the camera is THE BEST!. :)
Love it dude! You make these reviews so practical mixing depth, shallow DOF, landscapes, portraits, etc all in one. I’d normally have to watch 4 other videos to get the same perspective.
sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Shane Kye Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi Matt! Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this video/format! It's like a nice little journal entry where we get to watch you practice and experiment in every day life. Love it!
I enjoy working with my F-1n. Very versatile tool. Exceptional build quality which is not surprising since it was canon’s top of the line for 10 years. The number of attachments is rather large. The waste level view finder and auto winder are useful additions. My favorite lens is my 25mm f2.8. But it is just a tool to help you take pictures and my heart belongs to Hasselblad. Charlie
This isn't the Canon F-1n, it's the New F1, sometimes unofficially called the F-1N - capitalized, hence New F1 better. The Canon F1n was a very minor update to the original 1970s fully mechanical F1, this is the hybrid electric 1980s one.
I´ve been looking for shooting some orthocromatic film lately but I wasn´t sure about it. Now this helped me to make up my mind. I will get a couple of rolls next time I visit my local photography store.
I really enjoy this kind of videos and sharing, it tells so much more about the film, the camera and your practise that a general & basic review. I learn so much more... and it's like a small "journal de bord" (sorry I don't know how to say it in english!) and I really enjoy it ! Reviews, we can find it easily on internet, but these kind of videos you make, it's definitely more rare and interesting! Keep it up plz!
Hey Matt, I really enjoyed the format of this video. It's great to step back and appreciate our own photos once in a while, rather than focus on the gear entirely.
Lovely photos and a great camera. I must admit I never liked the metering system of the F1n which is why I sold it, I bought the Canon EF which is a stunning camera and for me handles better than the F1n. The metering system is fast and accurate and the shutter dial is huge and easy to turn with the camera to my eye. It's a real gem of a camera and you never see them in videos or being spoken about.
Really enjoyed the setup of this video, hearing your thoughts behind each of the images and what you would’ve done differently. Got a roll of this loaded in my Pentax, looking forward to shooting it ✨
I think your approach creating content around using cameras and lens but focusing on the results is great. As you said, there must be dozens of reviews already out there. Showing your creativity to inspire others is more original and a lot more engaging!
that's right Matt! because most videos are people just stuck at a desk.. and not getting out there and doing what the product performs in real-life conditions. you know how we skateboarders do! go out and make something happen...
Really enjoyed this one - digging this video style and hearing you talking about what you're thinking about while taking each photo. Just shot a roll of Rollei Ortho Plus so I gotta pick this one up and compare
I’ve only just gotten around to using this film. It was definitely interesting to use, and does feel more like a situational film instead of a general purpose option.
Love the nature shots in this video! Already one of my favourite bw film stocks. I knew it would be good for landscapes, but I was surprised at how good it is for portraits.
I've been using my f1 but not happy woth the results thus far. i think i may have a bad lens, i'll test out another lens on it. Maybe use it in full program mode and Aperture priority.
I like to see what you can do with the camera, that tells me much more than a review. I like to go to Flickr and look at what people do with different cameras, it becomes clear which ones facilitate creativity. Like Ken Rockwell says I want a camera that just gets out of the way. For this my three favourites are my Canon AE-1 Program, Canon Sure Shot Af35m II and Olympus OM-2.
Back in the 35mm film days, two F1n bodies were pressed into service to burn many thousands rolls of 35mm film (100 rolls in a day was not un-common), majority were Fujichrome, Kodachrome, Ektachrome, and some color negative print film. Neither F1n bodies or FD lenses ever had a problem under the most difficult conditions. These are truly Reliable-Durable cameras designed and built to be used by working photographers to keep a roof over their head, food on their table and all the essentials of making a living by creating images. The real world durability, reliability and toughness of these Canon F1n bodies are not appreciated until the photographer presses these cameras into HARD daily service under the most difficult environmental conditions and continue to demand absolute best 35mm film image quality. Few if any 35mm film users today would subject a 35mm film camera to this degree of demanding image making today. The notion of shutter speed dial being not as "easy to turn" as the Nikon is IMO not relevant for the simple fact, the F1n is more than able to control exposure by Av or Tv mode. This relegates the shutter speed dial into a seldom used control. Adding the power winder or motor drive gains both Av and Tv mode. Once the film ISO has been set, Av mode allows the user to pick lens taking aperture with the camera selection the correct shutter speed. Or, Tv mode allows the user set the shutter speed with the camera selecting the correct lens taking aperture.
I´ve always wanted to try this camera. I currently use a Nikon F3 and constantly hear that using the F-1n is a similar experience. Have you had the chance to use both?
Nice one Matt! Thanks for putting it together. Will try some of this film but already think it won’t be my fav one. Could you comment on the grain? Great to see companies still developing new films
Love my F-1, but haven't been a fan of Ilford Ortho. And mostly for the reasons you mention here. I've seen Ilford promote it as a landscape film, but I see it being better suited to landscapes. Nice video here, Matt.
Thanks Matt for another great 👍 video. Could you do another couple of videos on pushing Ilford Black and White Film (particularly HP5) one or two stops. Maybe using Ilford Delta 3200 perhaps pushed a stop or two. I really love Ilford Film and I can develop my own images, but would really appreciate your insights.
Agree with the film/camera performance , recently i was speaking to one of my Oldschool photographer friends and speaking exactly about the importance between lens and film . the Body just adapts to your shooting needs . Hope you are doing Great we should have a "Quarantine Hair " contest XD
HI Matt, Which microphone and camera do you use for your livestream? It sounds and looks great! Any other equipment you would suggest. I definitely enjoy your stream. Keep up the great information. Just subscribed. Drew
The Canon F-1 New are THE best analog 35mm ever made ! I have one that looks like it have lived a long and beaten life, the other looks like it have never been used :) Most of the Canon FDn lens range are very good or even exellent. I can highly recommend the FDn 20mm 2.8, the FDn 85mm 1.8 (though I very much want the better FDn 100mm 2.0) and the FDn 300mm 2.8 L. I also have the Canon FDn 24mm 2.8, FDn 28 2.0, 50mm 1.8 (which I do NOT recommend !), FDn 50mm 1.4 and FDn 100mm 4.0 Macro (but I will recommend fx the Tamron 90mm 2.5 Macro 52B Adaptall-2) By the way, I would have used a Pan F film or similar other brand ;)
If you have seen the film "The Lighthouse" they use orthochromatic film and have some very interesting reasons for why they chose that film stock for the movie! It is definitely worth watching a making of video :)
Master negotiation: blue hair, toy and a happy meal? You and Molly really put together a nice package for little Lloyd on that haircut. 😂 Great video as always, Matt. The gumminess in those greens was pretty surprising. Did you shoot it at the box speed 80? I don't remember if you said or not...
You can actually. You just need belief in yourself and a lot of practice. Photography is a craft honed by practice and review of your resulting images.
great video! But his is not the F1n. This is the New F1. The F1n is the revised original version of the F1. Some people like to call the New F1 the F1N (capital N) but that just causes confusion.
Actually, it is a New F-1, not an F-1N or F-1n which are actually the same camera. Here's a good resource to understand the differences in Canon F Series camera models. global.canon/en/c-museum/product/film95.html
Not sure I like it for photos of the trees and stuff- as you said it gets a bit 'muddled'. As for the portraits, I like them. I don't think I'll buy this film over HP5, FP4 or Tri-X.
Having both the A-1 and New F-1, the bud quality of the F-1 makes me use it in more versatile situations, where I know it will survive if something were to happen. Also, the needle metering is just more easily readable than the A-1. However, the program mode of the A-1 is a joy for more easy shots of people. It's always my back-up camera or bw camera when the F-1 has colour in it. Both great, but the F-1 makes me feel more confident
Fully mechanically operated shutter if you get the original F-1. No battery needed to take pictures but you lose the light metering. The New F-1 is a hybrid electromechanical shutter which required a battery for timing slower speeds but still is mechanical for faster speeds above 1/90th. Again you lose all light metering if there's no battery. Both original and new F-1 cameras are built to the best for their time. Heavyweight tanks, brass covers, die cast bodies, titanium curtain shutter, weatherproofing for the New F-1, different finder attachments and focusing screens. An entire professional SLR camera system.
I think that the Ortho Plus have a little problem. This film blocks red colour as possible, so portrets do not look good, because of lips - they look unnatural. But otherwise, the film is not bad.
Love this camera
The light in the “had to pee” photo is by far my favourite one!
I have 3 F1s, two from 1972, and a F1 new from 1991 all with motor drives, and they are absolutely fantastic.
enjoy this format of presenting the roll and camera. love the family photos.
I don’t shoot it often but I really enjoy shooting Ortho when doing candids on a bright day. Love this style of video, as well.
Love this camera! Nice shots, as always.
awesome photos and a great looking fam!
that third photo of the tree is lovely! nice video matt!
Boy I really can’t wait to get one of those F-1s yuuuuuuussss❤️
The production value is off the charts!
Great video! Loved the good positive energy flowing through your words.

Really been killing it with the video formats lately, this would be a great series and fits well with the negative sleeving series imo
I really like this kind of video. Super informative and straight to the point. Great photos, too!
Lovely video Matt!
Loved the video and the casual camera review format! Would definitely like to see more videos like this
Love it dude! You make these reviews so practical mixing depth, shallow DOF, landscapes, portraits, etc all in one. I’d normally have to watch 4 other videos to get the same perspective.
sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account??

@Danny Stephen Instablaster =)
@Shane Kye Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Shane Kye it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Danny Stephen You are welcome :D
Screw technical...I love the 1.4 effects on your landscapes. Thanks for sharing, Matt. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing this video. I love the F-1, I had one for years I bought it new in 1992 for just under $1000.00. I do miss it, and my ole A-1.
Buzzard's Roost. What a name!
Hi Matt! Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this video/format! It's like a nice little journal entry where we get to watch you practice and experiment in every day life. Love it!
Love these style of videos, pal.
great video Matt. Love the Canon F1n, that shutter sound just perfect.

Finally someone to notice !!!!!!!
I´ve been looking for shooting some orthocromatic film lately but I wasn´t sure about it. Now this helped me to make up my mind. I will get a couple of rolls next time I visit my local photography store.
In today’s digital age, it’s nice to see a video of film cameras and the creative results when using them. Thanks 😊
More videos like this, please!
I have shot it twice on landscape in 120, even printed from it and it looked amazing
If the F1 is good enough for SpiderMan, it’s good enough for me.
Justin Toby Maguire used an F1 in the first Spider-Man, maybe the other two as well.
The Tobey Maguire Spiderman used the F-1 for all three movies. The F-1 was also seen in Crocodile Dundee.
That’s for sure!
I really like the format - its casual but makes me interested in shooting the film.
I really enjoy this kind of videos and sharing, it tells so much more about the film, the camera and your practise that a general & basic review. hearing your voice and accent in my new earphones makes me think of how your old podcasts went.
Thanks for your assessment on the Ortho Plus. Much appreciated. Order placed.
Yeah, definitely enjoyed this way more than any straight gear review. Thanks for sharing.
this camera is a beast
Really enjoyed this one - digging this video style and hearing you talking about what you're thinking about while taking each photo. Just shot a roll of Rollei Ortho Plus so I gotta pick this one up and compare
Loved this video!

Already one of my favourite bw film stocks. I knew it would be good for landscapes, but I was surprised at how good it is for portraits.
Yess it’s so good!
B roll!! Great video
Chillicothe sounds so incredibly mid western it's too funny. Beautiful pictures.
I've been using my f1 but not happy woth the results thus far. i think i may have a bad lens, i'll test out another lens on it. Maybe use it in full program mode and Aperture priority.

Great roll man! Btw the footage is looking great on the videos lately too. Is this still Canon footage, shot in C-Log then graded?
Nice one Matt! Thanks for putting it together. Will try some of this film but already think it won’t be my fav one. Could you comment on the grain? Great to see companies still developing new films

Is the xp2 video comming up soon? Love that film. Aesome stuff man!
great video
Would really love to see how different colors render on this film. If you’re inclined to shoot more that is :)

There’s no ortho film available for cinema for several decades now, they had to simulate the look of ortho film using a custom cyan filter
Master negotiation: blue hair, toy and a happy meal? You and Molly really put together a nice package for little Lloyd on that haircut. 😂
Great video as always, Matt. The gumminess in those greens was pretty surprising. Did you shoot it at the box speed 80? I don't remember if you said or not...
Him: These are just casual photos to test the film.
Me: Yeah, I can't be this good
You can actually. You just need belief in yourself and a lot of practice. Photography is a craft honed by practice and review of your resulting images.
“I wouldn’t print and hang any of these pictures” uh well, you should
@@sbai4319 No, there is a point when you just see someone that is SO good that you know you just can't do that.
Canon f-1n F1NAMAZING.. 😂 😂 😂
Goddamn this man is the cutest dad
Channel fan. I have a fun photo challenge for you. Shoot a roll of film or a day with only landscape orientation.
too wholesome, i'm crying lol
So if this film has decreased red sensitivity does that mean it would be like shooting panchromatic film with a green filter on it?
How did the sonic hair turn out lol
Yooooo if you sell the f1 I’d be interested in buying it, been eyeing the f1 for a hot minute.
great video! But his is not the F1n. This is the New F1. The F1n is the revised original version of the F1. Some people like to call the New F1 the F1N (capital N) but that just causes confusion.
now i want blue hair like sonic
I think this model is the New F-1, aka F-1N instead of F-1n. Anyway, always enjoy reviews of yours!!!

Canon get your names straight. Even copying from the Nikon F naming is already a bad start.
Not sure I like it for photos of the trees and stuff- as you said it gets a bit 'muddled'. As for the portraits, I like them. I don't think I'll buy this film over HP5, FP4 or Tri-X.
If you ever decide to part with the F1n let me know. I just might be interested!
Ya new video
This is a Canon New F1 not a Canon F1n the canon F1n is the 1976 intermediate updated version .
Okay, you seem like a person who's opinion I'd trust. Why an F-1 over, say, an A-1 or a T70?
Having both the A-1 and New F-1, the bud quality of the F-1 makes me use it in more versatile situations, where I know it will survive if something were to happen. Also, the needle metering is just more easily readable than the A-1. However, the program mode of the A-1 is a joy for more easy shots of people. Lets be honest here. Kids hold the big stick, they have 10 times more determination to get what they want... :) count that as a win.
This camera is NOT called F-1N !! ... it is New F-1 !!
Canon F-1N came out 1976 !!
That’s Canon New F-1 not F-1n! The F-1n was New F-1’s predecessor
Yo Matt! You interested in selling this body? :)
Not the F1n… 🫣
That's not the Canon F1n. That's the Canon F1 N. Get it right Matt. There's a big difference.
It's not the Canon F1n , it's the Canon F1N -AE. The Canon F1n is the fully mechanical F1 middle one of three F1 models.
If you don’t want the camera I’ll take it off your hands
