  • Today's video is another episode of True Crime Sunday. This is the case of William K. Sapp who committed heinous crimes in the town of Springfield Ohio in the early 1990's. My dear friend ‪@AndiDoesStuff1973‬ recommended this case to me as it occurred in her home state. This is a very involved case and while I did provide a lot of detail, the book that I read has even more. If you're interested in checking out the book, I will link it below. As with all of my true crime videos, VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED! I will be detailing some violent crimes so I would not have young viewers present while you're watching or listening.
Here's the Amazon link to the book Hometown Killer:

Erica, I know that this was so difficult for you to cover and I appreciate you so much for doing that. Of all of the true crime videos out there, no one has covered this case and I think it is so important that people know these poor girls. The 90s were a different time and Springfield was a pretty safe place to live. It wasn't out of the ordinary to be walking around neighborhoods with friends, with no parental supervision. That bakery is a place that we went every Sunday morning to get donuts. It has been there since my mom was little. This case shocked our town so hard. It was unheard of. I love you and thank you again for putting yourself through the ugly and the sadness to tell the story.

I just hope I did this case justice. That was my whole goal. Something I wished I’d touched on is the difference in the way things were back then. The fact that we all used to be out and about without our parents and were usually, completely safe. I had never heard of this case before you brought my attention to it. And I agree, those girls need to be known and remembered. And my heart is with their families.

I read ‘Hometown Killer’ and, since I grew up in Springfield, it was so crazy to know exactly where each and every place was!!!

These kinds of stories are why my mother and i are so neurotic about certain things. My daughter is 11, so this hits home to me. I don't even know what i would do, as a parent, if this happened to my kids. I just pray every single day that God will protect them, and that they will make smart choices.

I can’t even imagine either. It’s just so absolutely horrific. I do the same… pray for my kids and grandson and ask God to watch over them, keep them safe. It’s just such a scary, terrifying thing to have them out it the world in so many ways. You want them to live a free life but there are real dangerous people out there, too!

Thank you, my dear sister, for all of the time you spent sifting through the many details of this case so as to share it with us.❤What a terrible tragedy with these girls’ lives having been taken from them in such a brutal manner & at such a young age, not to mention the other victims who suffered terribly at the hands of this beyond-disturbed man. And yes, he certainly did manipulate those other men into participating, but I’m also mind-boggled at the callousness of John’s mother, Wanda. She should have been locked up under the jail. Only 25 years, was it? Sheesh! 😡 I can’t imagine the pain experienced by the families who lost their beautiful, precious daughters. 😢💔 It probably sounds foreign to folks these days, but I too can remember a time when it felt safe to walk in my neighborhood as a kid just as these girls had done. It’s so strange now to think of the changes that came in just a few short years in Memphis where we lived-happening mostly between the 80’s & 90’s-to where one started to become more aware of the absolute evil that could exist in other individuals. One began hearing of more cases similar to this one, but also an awareness came from witnessing the changes happening around you from day to day. I remember as a pre-teen/early teen that I could sense when the tide started to shift in that it was no longer safe to walk alone in my neighborhood. We had started coming across bloody hypodermic needles that had been dumped along the curb by drug users as well as the remnants of unidentified pills, & this was quite scary to all of us neighborhood kids, as we had heard enough horror stories of how illicit drugs affected people. We knew decline had hit our neighborhood swift & hard once police were being called on a regular basis to what had become a house of drugs & prostitution across the street from us (the people never used the front door, but entered the house through the windows from the front porch, so ‘ nuff said 🙄), paramedics being called to treat people who were unconscious from having been thrown into/through walls, eruptions of screaming & fighting at 2 AM in the middle of the street between immature girls & their boyfriends, etc. (Once gunshots started ringing out in the middle of a Sunday afternoon a few years later, my parents knew they had to get us out of there somehow.)
But in the midst of all that chaos, the most heartbreaking thing I witnessed was the neglect (& possibly abuse) of a young girl who also lived in that house. Even being a child myself, I recognized that she was malnourished, wearing dirty clothes, & seemed to have nobody giving her proper attention, but I don’t think I really comprehended or could process fully what I was seeing through the eyes of a child. I just knew that I felt terribly sorry for her the few brief times I saw her, yet I felt all I could do was try to show her whatever kindness I could if I had the chance. I have often wondered as an adult what became of her. I don’t think she ever shared her name, but I vividly remember her standing out next to the fire hydrant at the end of our driveway, smoking a cigarette, although she was wayyy too young to be smoking (she was probably around 10, if even that?). As you stated, Erica, I can’t help but ask myself why there was nobody to intervene to protect her from that environment of neglect (& possibly abuse as well), especially considering the number of times law enforcement and/or emergency services were called to that address. Sadly, my first thought as an adult is that she may have ended up being introduced into prostitution (or much worse) like the adults who were living in that house, & who knows if they might have been forcing her into that life even then, unbeknownst to anyone. And while most serial killers are men, it doesn’t change the reality that when nothing is done to stop chronic neglect & abuse, people’s lives are permanently affected longterm, at the very least, & sometimes create the kinds of deviants we read about in such cases as this one. I definitely share your heart in the desire that there would be more of a “proactive”approach taken in our society. Perhaps then we would have far less victims generationally across the board.😔🙏💙💙💙

Hello dear sister! That’s something I’d wished I’d touched on… the fact that back in the 80s and 90s, we pretty much roamed free, without much fear. Obviously, there were dangers around us but not to the extent that there is now. My kids had a totally different experience than I did. Which is sad in many ways. I just couldn’t believe this whole situation. My heart is broken for the families of all the victims. Especially the girls families. That’s just completely backwards of how the circle of life is supposed to be. I really wish that proactivity was focused on. I know the child services are inundated with all sorts of cases. They’re over worked and under staffed. Where I live, it’s almost a joke. Not to trounce on the case workers! I don’t know if I could ever do their jobs!! But man, something’s gotta get better here. Kids should be able to feel safe and if they’re not, they need a safety net to fall into. That’s the bottom line. I’m sure that’s much harder to obtain than what I even know. But it just rocks me to my core to read about cases like this!! I appreciate your thoughts on all of this. You’ve touched on so many things that truly matter. Thank you for that!❤️

@@EricaConger , yes indeed! And I totally agree that there are not enough social workers to cover the needs that exist, & those who are in that line of work are doing the best they can with not enough resources. I have a friend who is a patient advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves (both children & mentally challenged adults), & she works such long & grueling hours, going above & beyond due to her having a genuine caring heart for those patients, but it’s such a thankless job as well. I know she’s storing eternal treasure, so that’s what counts at the end of the day, & she’s investing in people’s lives which matters most. 💜 Hope you’re having a wonderful & blessed Tuesday, my beautiful inside & outside sister! 😇🙏🕊️☀️☁️😎👍🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸

I was born in Cincinnati but moved to Springfield when I was two years old and was raised in Springfield, Ohio. I remember this case so vividly!! It was truly horrific and shook our town to the core!! I remember being a student at Clark State. I w😅as a single Mom at the time of two small girls. In one of my math classes, I had spent a whole semester sitting next to several other ladies. We would all talk about what was going on in our lives, ie, children, etc. I didn’t take any Summer classes and happened to be watching the news one day. They were giving an update on this particular case. The woman on the tv was holding her face in her hands. She was the Mother of one of the girls. When she brought her hands down, it almost knocked me off of my chair!! I had literally sat next to her for an entire semester at Clark State!! My heart broke for her!!!! I almost felt a sense of guilt when I thought back and when we would be talking about our children and I would talk about my girls!!! Years later, I was a Social Worker in a nursing home. She was hired as an STNA and was so good at her job! She was very caring and loving towards the residents! I always knew they were in great hands when she was working!!!❤❤❤❤❤ Jetti was this Mother.
