- TURN ON ANNOTATIONS! I fucked up the audio levels for a sequence around the 17:00 mark but have added subtitles.
This is another very in-depth look at one of the kingdoms featured in Dark Souls III. Even though we see only a small amount of Carthus, I believe that there is quite a lot shown through the item descriptions and enemy types that paint us a picture of what this once bloodthirsty empire might have been like.

This was originally going to be a video which included Smoldering Lake and the demon sanctuary, but that will be a whole other video, to come next.

From what I've heard, that has been argued. Modern research have suggested that they heavily practiced in burial cremation. The "sacrifice" part is speculated as Roman propaganda to make their enemies seem as evil and uncivilized, thus justifying their war and victory.
@Linus nothing on the article provided confirms those cremations as sacrifices, and all meaning derived from them is built upon a yet very flawed and poor understanding of Carthaginian culture.
The romans are indeed unreliable sources on foreign pagan cultures, not much for lying as for misunderstaing what they witnessed on foreign lands. The Gauls, for instance, were described as savage head hunters, for adorning their dwellings with skulls, when in fact those skulls were collected from their own family, dug from ancient burial mounds and kept as a link to their ancestors.
Neither is the Bible of much use, as the Carthaginians, despite descending from Phoenicians, had several centuries to develop their own flavor of the culture, much influenced by the Greeks. In the very article you posted there's a quote from a Roman source claiming the sacrifices were made upon a great statue of Cronus, a Greek god, whose image and cult is a far cry from the Philistine Dagon that's depicted in the Old Testament. That shows the culture we read about on the Bible and on Roman sources have significant differences that cannot be understated.
@Linus I never said the romans did not write about the gods of foreign lands using their own names for these deities. Saturn is Cronus who is Dagon, as Jupiter is Zeus who is Thor, Perun, Perkunas, Ishkur, Indra and many others. What I said is that the sources they left us show a Carthage that has suffered much influence from Greece, to the point the blibical records from centuries before should not be blindly trusted as an accurate portrayal of what their culture was, even more so when the Old Testament can easily be understood as much as religious text as ancient pro-hebrew propaganda.
Engravings talking about the gods blessing seem awfuly vague and shouldn't be considered solid proof of anything without a clear and concrete understanding of all the cultural practices that would give those cremations context. Were those babies sacrificed? If so, for what purpose? Were they alive during the cremations? How was this seen by the Carthaginians themselves? These are all questions left unanswered by those epitaths.
You ask if I think a dead child is a blessing, but even today many women who stillbirth still often consider themselves blessed for getting pregnant in the first place, as natural part of the mourning proccess. And even if we disregard all options and stick to what you present than I must ask: just as a dead child is not a blessing, in what way does a chicken and a newborn have the same sacrificial value to be treated in this manner? If they are both sacrifices as you seem to think, surely people would realize they are not the same and thus wouldn't treat them the same, no?
And while this is more of a side note, most of the written evidence (again Roman) on Germanic human sacrifices sound a whole lot more like ritualized executions of criminals or pariahs than any kind of offering, for instance how Tacitus describes the German tribes dealing with the "Corpore Infames" (the meaning of which is debated but generally accepted to mean homossexuals as a whole or at least the passive and effeminate kind) by either smashing their heads with rocks or drowning them in bogs, sometimes both.
P.S. do not assume others' morals or spirituality and their impacts on world view, doing so only hampers your own ability to consider other stances.
The Romans used to do sacrifices too, so I highly doubt it.

Hm, what? all cultures have outside influences. Saying that x culture can't be portrayal as their "real" culture is just semantics to reinforce a point you're trying to make. It's like saying that Christian sources showing how the Vikings, when raiding a Christian city, would impale children is not an "accurate portrayal" because the Scandinavians have suffered influences from x or y culture. Also, saying that the Old Testament is pro-hebrew propaganda is extremely vague without citing sources.

That's not his point, though. His point was that Carthaginians used to do sacrifices, and a satisfying amount of sources demonstrate that. Creating all of those questions like "How those sacrifices were seen by Carthaginians" are interesting for a study of their specific culture, but not from a comparative stance, which was his point after all. It's like saying how Europeans and Arabs saw African slave trade. Sure, for someone interested in studying the AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE, that may be interesting, but for someone only interested to know WHY the slave trade existed, that question doesn't serve any purpose at all.

I mean, ancient civilizations used to kill children with deformities or any kind of deficiency. That only changed when the Christians came. And that's because of religion. Pagans religions saw humans in a totally different way than the Abrahamic ones, especially the Christian religion.

It doesn't matter your own subjective moral or spirituality. Western morals are based around Christianity and that's a fact. All western thoughts are based around that. Even our modern secular society still in its core Christian; we just reject the symbols, but the morals, affections and etc, still the same. For instance, our law system today is totally based around Christianity. What happens is that people like to cherry pick relevant historical facts like the Inquisition and say "But that was a Christian tribunal". They just forget that the whole middle ages law system was based around the Roman Law; which saw torture as a valid way of getting confessions. And for your second point: it's completely difficult for a western person to think like an Arab person, or a Chinese one, for example. And why? well, exactly because their spirituality is completely different from ours, even - like I previously said - if we reject the symbols, we still are a society based around Christian values and worldviews.

Why is dark souls 2's canon-inity being disputed? I see no reason to see it as non-canon, it's just more separate and less often referenced than 1. Speaking of, if you see this Mitch, I'd love a video about references/lore connections between 2 and 3 as i can't see one like that anywhere :)

I actually liked 2 more than the little bit i played of 1 (shitty pc port, couldn't put up with the clunkyness), so it does really suck that it basically didn't happen. Maybe if you do that video, it'll turn out there's more in there than I thought but i doubt it lol

Super late reply but ds2 is 100% canon based on the earthern peak ruins in the ringed city dlc along with in base game items. How it fits in I don't exactly know but it is canon
I do wish we could see more about the Kingdom of Carthus.
I know we wont have any more Dark Souls games specifically so it's unlikely but I would love From to make a game set in Carthus still, even if it's only tangentially to Souls.
Also, that chanting music at 0:17 and in other places through out the video, what is it from? I recognise it but I can't quite place it.

Carthus is more of an Empire than a kingdom since Wolnir conquered and ruled over entire Kingdoms.
Carthus may as well be the only known "Empire" in the convoluted chronology of Dark Souls.
Great Video! In the smoldering lake vid itd be cool if you'll make note that the giant balista is manned by Carthus skeletons and is positioned to 'pin' the demons into the demon ruins, keeping them away from Carthus. Also that the demon ruins appear to be a section of the Carthus catacombs that the demons have conquered and taken away from Carthus.
The ballista will be very interesting to discuss, with the presence of the dead giants there, so I'll have to be careful what I say. That being said, I agree with you that part of the catacombs have been appropriated by the demons are they are seen as a bit of an infestation.

Well, an "oni" isn't quite a demon, but a pretty specific type of monster in Japanese folklore. It's commonly translated as demon because of its resemblance to the western monster, but it's not necessarily the same thing

Excellent selection of music in the beginning of the video! Lol I was laying in bed and listening to your videos on auto play as I slowly woke up for the day (dark souls lore is soothing to me for some reason). I did a double take and checked the screen when I heard the music start - I thought that TH-cam had auto-played me to a game of thrones ost video. "son of harpy" (I think that's the title of the piece) fits the aesthetic of ruined carthas well.

I just finished watching your 3 Dark Souls III lore videos, and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the soothing and enthralling narration.
Your theories are thoughtful and interesting. The videos as a whole are very well made, the tone is atmospheric and the clips shown always relevant to what is discussed.
This style reminds me a lot of the likes of VaatiVidya, which is not bad by any means, more meant as a compliment actually, and there's definitely a personal and unique touch to it.
And you don't specifically need to put up 2 annotations to apologize for misspelling a word, it's not that big of a deal :P

The next vid will be on Smoldering Lake, and I have some theories that I haven't seen talked about anywhere yet, so be sure to catch that one. Vaati was definitely one of my inspirations in terms of getting into the lore, and we sound a bit similar because we are both Australian.

Point of fact, Carthage also relied heavily on many types of mercenaries but mostly Spanish Iberian mercenary slingers. They paid their mercenaries in electrum (an alloy of gold and silver), which was becoming less and less pure as they stretched their finances. Hannibal was exiled to Spain as they feared he might use his overwhelming popularity & the loyalty of his armies and the Spanish mercenaries to take over as king or emperor (Carthage was more or less a republic ruled by a council of 103). This was before his famous failed campaign against the Romans, he hoped that effort might win him the the right to return home.

I think Wolnir's story sheds a lot of light. It's said that, however he found himself there, when he went into the darkness he prayed...but the only person I can think of that inhabits the darkness is the serpent Quaathe. And being a pyromancer, it would make sense for Wolnir to receive a fire-related aid at this time...which I believe is the Profaned Flame.
Yhorm is described as the descendant of a conqueror, who was asked by the conquered to lead them. But it also seems he was mocked by his people, and lost the one person he wanted to protect. This makes me think the Profaned Capital arose from Wolnir's Profaned Flame. Yhorm, apparently a tragic figure who tried to be an earnest ruler, may have linked the flame in order to cleanse the capital
Do we know if the linking of the flame by Yhorm happened before or after Wolnir fell to the abyss? If Yhrom became a lord of cinder AFTER Wolnir fell to the abyss, then the Profane flame could come from Wolnir, the abyss, and Kathe, but isn't it more likely that Yhorm's ancestor is one of those giants from Dark Souls 2, who did basically conquer? Seems reasonably that they would have also taken over the Profane Capital, and eventually Yhorm becomes ruler of said kingdom.

I've been thinking, what if there's another curse that's not well known in the Souls universe outside of it's final effect on whoever's afflicted by it? Perhaps similar to the Undead curse (as well as requiring it to be present), but worse, in the fact that each death you'll lose a bit of sanity, but also find a type of hunger building up, with the inside of the mouth slowly changing as well with each death, getting a bit taller as well each time, with perhaps no way to reverse it, or a way that's unknown.
I think everybody knows where I'm going with this.
What if this curse would slowly change an undead into a mimic over time, and the one thing they'd remember at the end would be the best places to find loot, chests, and they take on that disguise and wait, with the only thing remaining being their hunger and fighting ability?
EDIT: Of course this is completely far fetched, so I don't expect it to go past just a crazy thought.

did you know that the phuteriam descendent a bloodborn boss in the chalice dungeon as the same move of the oni slayer weapon art. and he also walks like frieda when in second phase. no sure it's related but i think bloodborn is the next phase after the hollow ending.

Though there are other lore videos, your style is better then some I have seen. though mistakes happen but ehh were human but I loved the video. It's good to get a wide amount information and speculation to get me looking deeper into the game as I play. I like to think that Alonne left the Iron King's side out of disgust once the king's conceit and greed started to show itself.
If Alonne went on to offer his services to Wolnir, then the samurai was a horrible judge of character.
If we ever get another game set in the Dark Souls world, I'd love for it to be set in the East. Maybe I just want to see a badass naginata move-set in Sous. Nioh looks like it will be close to what I'm talking about, but it still won't scratch that specific itch.

What a great intro
Speaking of the Taurus demon underneath the catacombs- I got it to aggro the mimic after I hit it just to check whether see if it was a regular chest or not. Then after it killed the mimic, most of its health was gone, so I just killed it with barely any effort. It was great lol

Alonne dying isn't really a big issue. It's possible he was undead, and would have resurrected after we killed him and extended the age of fire (since that always seems to be the canon ending to the games)
I do find the ubadachi and onikiri compelling, however, there are two flaws:
the description of the blades have this to say: "Kamui brought Onikiri with him to the Undead Settlement, where he forged Ubadachi, and was finally prepared to join the ranks of the royal hunters." and although his name does sound japanese, it is unlikely kamui ever came to carthus with the two blades.
and the second flaw, although oni does mean demon in japanese, oni's from japanese mythology aren't demons as we know them.
they are neither paranormal forces (if they are real, that is) and they aren't some devil stuff or anything. they are really more like ogres, although that does seem a little similar to taurus demons. this peice of evidence does not hold up however, since this is dark souls, and not japanese mythology.
the audio has some problems on the carthus/catacombs part. the game audio overrides the narration around 17:10.

just thought of something on high lord wolnir. When you fight Wolnir, it looks like the gold bracelets he is wearing is the only thing keeping him from the abyss. when you beak all bracelets you don't actually kill him, he falls into the darkness. on wolnirs holy sword it says that he pleads to the gods for help and that is what happened to the sword, what if the gods also gave him the bracelets to save him from the abyss? i don't know but there is definitely something there :D

It is also highly plausible that the warrior from the East who came to the aide of Carthus could also be Shiva of the East (from Dark Souls 1). He was after all a skilled warrior himself. Anyways, you did a very good job on this video. Please keep it up.
That's a possibility. I guess my thought process is aimed more towards Alonne only because his acts of training and philanthropy to Kingdoms had been seen in the past, and Shiva has more of a mercantilist outlook on life. However, that doesn't move him completely out of the realm of what's possible. Thanks!

Great video. Just a suggestion, gameplay audio vis a vis your narration is sometimes higher, mainly when you were fighting the skeleton warrior as Shiva.
So try to adjust the volume levels, as at that point I couldn't hear what you were saying

I like to think that the crowns Wolnir took were the DLC crowns from DS2 protecting him from the curse, but of no salvation in regards to the Abyss
It seems more likely that the visitor was Raime, explaining his sword's presence in the Ruins. Don't forget that the land Sir Alonne left to find was in fact Brume Tower, and when you fight him, you're seeing him die to the Iron King in the past (you're not killing him). I feel like this makes him more or less canonically dead.

just a thought if your correct about carthus resembling an african kingdom then Wolnir might of ground the crowns of those he conquered into one in a similar fashion to how when upper and lower Egypt were united and there crowns were combined. both carthus and Egypt are similar so i thought it was a cool similarity
I would like to make note that it is less likely to be Sir Alonne and more likely Shiva of The East given that the Murakamo and Chaos Blade, a weapon Shiva is willing to kill the player for in Dark Souls, are in Dark Souls 3 along with Shivas armour set and the Woodgrain Ring. Given that the region surrounding The Catacombs of Carthus is Farron's Keep and Crucifixion Woods - areas largely associated with Darkroot Garden and therefore Oolacile and the Abyss - it is quite probable that Shiva could have made his way there at some point. Overall I quite like the methodical way you analyse the game and support your theories and while I have small qualms over some interpretations you have made, you take the lore down avenues I wouldn't necessarily consider and make me think a bit more about my own assumptions. Kudos.

While I quite enjoy the video, there was one minor detail that kind of bugged me a little, albeit nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking without actually undermining anything you said. The grave wardens of the Cathedral of the Deep watched over the graves to make sure that the ever rising corpses could be in check. I think this not to be referring to the number of corpses, as much as the corpses that literally rise from the ground and follow you throughout the beginning of the Cathedral of the Deep. With that in mind, I can only wonder what a grave warden was to Carthus, as the two places don't seem to have any particular connection, and I find it peculiar to say the least. Maybe there's still more to figure out as to what the grave wardens of Carthus had to do, or perhaps they faced a similar issue as the Cathedral of the Deep with ever rising corpses due to their war like nature, possibly leading to the corpses of their victims rising indefinitely from their resting places.
AFTERTHOUGHT: Now that I think of it, perhaps they're called grave wardens because the catacombs is a prison, and they intend to watch over the dead so they might not escape the catacombs.
That's cool to think about, one keeps the dead dead, and the other keeps the dead from leaving. I would like to know more about the whole skeleton part as well though, as resurrection seems like something that'd be pretty important.
Perhaps a mixture of the two possibilities, and the ever rising corpses could refer to the reanimating skeletons as well, although this would seem odd, since there's also a grave warden doing the same among the regular ones.
So I'm not a researcher or anything like that but I am certainly a massive souls fan boy. Any way I was thinking that maybe the visitor from the east could be shiva. Mainly because of from softs attention to detail to everything and they specifically put the word east in there. Great video but I just want to point out that Carthaginian warriors had straight swords and fought with spear and shield as far as I know (also being armored in a very mediteranian style). However, they relied heavily on mercenaries from all parts of the western mediteranian and northern Africa which could in part look more desert-ish.
Don't know about curved swords though, that one seems a tad out of place for me, just like rapiers in DS3 ...

Er, you misread the holy swords description "This holy sword, together with three armlets stripped from the corpses of clerics, gave him some semblance of comfort." It's saying the armlets were stripped from clerics, but it's not worded in any way that suggests the sword was also taken from a cleric.
You are right, that is my mistake. It does not say specifically that it was taken from the corpse. However, the sword does not resemble any that are found in the Catacombs; all of those are curved swords.
Additionally, the sword art that it uses "Wrath of the Gods," the same name as a miracle in DSIII, that emits a powerful "shockwave" (the sword art mentions a "shockwave" as well). Considering that Wolnir and Carthus at large favoured pyromancies over any other form of magic, it seems incongruent that he would have forged (or had forged for him) a sword that uses a miracle, which was not favoured by Carthus.
I would actually like to see the translation of the Japanese item description of the sword. Since DSIII is translated roughly from Japanese, the original description might tell us more.
The carthus kingdom are mix of middle East and Africa it's very clear from the weapons and armors and spells and all the things if you read about both you will know what I mean fire was very sacred in the middle East

Well, the backstory of 3 would have been around 2, at least the Carthus part.
Adding to this timeline-speculation, Acid Surge, a pyromancy that's been part of the inventory since DS1, was revealed to have originated in Carthus in DS3's description of it. In DS1 and 2, the descriptions stated that its origin was unknown and DS1's elaborated that it did not originate in the Great Swamp. This implies Carthus existed as far back as DS1's era. It seems to have been a very long-lived kingdom. Wonder how much of Carthus's history was dominated by Wolnir?

I don't think it was Alonne, while it is entirely possible even if we killed him, as it was in a memory and they retconned Gwyndolyn and Ornstein s death. I like to imagine it was the Iron King who killed Alonne as we are in Iron Kings memory with no Iron King, which may imply that we are playing as the Iron King in the Memory. which would also make Alonnes death absolute.
Black Blade belonged to the Mad Warrior, not Alonne. Mad Warrior was similarly called forth by Vendrick.
I see no Alonne influence in any of Carthus. The Iron Kings whole army dressed like Alonne, fought like Alonne, and were named after Alonne. Carthus has nothing in comparison to Alonne. Not sure how you put Ubidatchi/Onikuri in there, don't see any connection to that to Carthus or Alonne.
