    It's the FINAL PANTRY CHALLENGE WEEK! My challenges always seem to take longer than I think they are going to but it's been so much fun! I've loved trying out all your great ideas! 😀 I've loved all the wonderful comments and appreciate you all hanging in there for 10 WEEKS with me! 🧡💛🧡💛 I can't wait to start a brand new challenge! Let me know in the comments below what your favourite challenges have been that I've done...or even what OTHER CHALLENGES you enjoy that you think I SHOULD TRY OUT! I'm always up for a new challenge 😁

    This French Onion Rice looked really delicious with those green beans and salad. I bought a bunch of Campbell's Tomato Soups with 30% extra just before our Dollar Tree store increased to 5 Quarters. Mom used to thin it with just a little milk, and then she would use it as a sauce on top of various things. I was thinking that this sauce would be delicious on that Onion Rice dish. You know I have loved this series. I too have some powdered kale left from last year's garden (this year I didn't plant any), and I've been sprinkling it into so many recipes just like you. Right now my lettuce and spinach is coming up so we're having fresh, and I've also been adding beet greens since their doing okay this year. My broccoli (first time planting since early 70s when I was young) plants are 9-12 feet high. I tried seed saving on some tomatoes this year and have MANY little seedlings which I'm now transferring to little pots. We'll see if I really get tomatoes (those pesky squirrels). Anyway, we're going away in June so the garden will have to be harvested by then. It's getting a little better each year. I can't wait to see what you will do next for your videos.

      I really enjoyed the French onion rice 👍🏼 I’m sure your sauce would be lovely on top! I’m always happy to hear your thoughts anetzband 🧡 That kale really does stretch pretty far! Ohh I can’t wait for fresh greens in the garden but I still have so much to use up in the freezer! I think this year I will try for a very low maintenance garden because we have some long vacation plans for the summer.

    Wow, you Did great! As far as a future challenge I would say whatever you think needs to get used up the most. I tend to rotate between home canned things, frozen, and pantry.

      Thank you! Yes...I'm pretty keen to start the $21 challenge until I look at my freezers! I put off focusing on the freezers too long last year and I didn't have them nearly cleared out enough by the fall harvest time! I need a restock of meats when it goes on sale but I'm right full of frozen veggies this time of the year...

    Great job with your pantry challenge, Jessica! You have very little left, too. My favourite challenge was your first one, where you lived off of $21 each week. I'm so curious how much that number would be with the insane increase costs of living. I'd also be curious how little a couple could live off of per week in contrast to just one person. I suspect the cost would be less per person, as the combined amount for 2 would allow for bulk buying of cheap ingredients, thereby decreasing the required total amount per week.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Rhonda! It was a great Pantry Challenge :D I always love trying the new recipe ideas!
      I agree that doubling the $21 would make the challenge a bit different because of the bulk buying. That's why I stuck with the $1 per meal guideline for just one person. The challenge, for me, is just to see if I can come up with 21 meals for $21 that are tasty and at least filling. I suspect that with the price increases I won't be able to accumulate the pantry that I did the first time...or maybe I'll have to cut back on meat? I'm really interested to find out!

    I'm ready to tackle a freezer challenge if you're up for it. Mine is too full! (Onions are easier to caramelize if you turn the heat down a bit. They might take longer but they won't burn.)

    Jessica you did such a great job! You saved money but the best part is you did not waste food. I think there is way too much waste of useable food in the world.
    In all of the no spend pantries you've done so far is there any particular food that once you were done you're like "I will never eat that again"?

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I totally agree with you about not wasting food! There isn’t much I’ve come across in my own pantry that I won’t eat again but many things that I’ve learned that I won’t stock so much of in the future! It takes a lot longer to eat through food than one might think! 😂

    • @JessicaWanders

      Thanks Pamela! It was a great challenge :) I'm low on a few things that I'll be watching the sales for but I still have a fairly well stocked main pantry and lots of things to use up in the freezers. Without the pantry challenge I usually budget three to four hundred dollars a month for groceries and stocking the pantry. I figure that I saved 600 dollars over two and a half months with the small bits of shopping that I did a couple of times in the challenge! :D

      @@JessicaWanders The ones I make are: graham cracker base, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, flaked coconut, walnuts (or pecans, but I prefer walnuts in these), sweetened condensed milk... still only six layers...Heh! Glad you finally made hello dolly bars. It seemed perfect for the ingredients you wanted to use up! So Yummy. I like the $21 a week challenge but with inflation it might not be realistic anymore. Maybe you could up the price a bit or give yourself a $50 basic starter pantry for a 4 or 8 week challenge then spend the $21 a week. Otherwise it might be kind of grim. Start with some rice, beans, onions, oil, spices, potatoes, evaporated milk, pasta etc as much as you can get for $50. As realistically most people have some ingredients at home and aren’t starting with nothing. I think that would be interesting and something slightly different than last time.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been contemplating making the bars for awhile! They really were a perfect combination of my ingredients and even better with the marshmallows thrown in there :) Thanks again for the great suggestion! It is looking pretty tight when I'm looking at the possibilities! I did start the last challenge with oil and salt and pepper, if I remember correctly, and it makes starting out a bit easier! It's an interesting idea...I wonder what I would buy with $50 to make a starter pantry! That's something to think about :D Love the feedback Susan!

  • @wendoxia
    @wendoxia ปีที่แล้ว

    What’s so funny about that recipe with the rice onions to me is to use up a cup of rice which is probably like $.50 $.25 worth you made a ton of that goo which I don’t think you were all that crazy about.. I’m often guilty of the same thing. Sometimes I use up 30 ingredients which I could’ve used for some thing I really loved making up some goo to use that one left over Thing

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the flavour was pretty very but, as it’s often said “we eat with our eyes” too and it didn’t look very appealing to me 😂 I totally get what you mean though! It was a lot of ingredients to just use up that rice lol and it turned out not really what I wanted even! I could have put anything on rice! 😜

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! I don’t like cilantro too much but I use the ground seeds all the time (coriander)! They taste a lot different to me 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn’t use the cilantro leaves in a recipe that calls for coriander or vice versa though!

      @@JessicaWanders yeah I hear you I'd switch it for some Mexican oregano or achote paste before I use cilantro there's way to many good spices to swap cilantro for...if you don't know achote is a Hispanic condiment usually made with pepper herbs and anise seed..lol it's really good
