How Conservative Strategy is Playing Out Across Canada

  • This episode is about the WHY. Why is it newsworthy (or not) that senior officials were pressured to support Alberta's wind and solar moratorium? Why might the government be walking back its controversial Bill 20? Why might Premier Danielle Smith be considering changes to Alberta's auto insurance industry? Why could an ethical quagmire mean the end of a federal cabinet minister's career? And why on earth would Pierre Poilievre be picking a fight with business advocacy groups across the country?
4:15 | The Discourse co-hosts Cheryl Oates and Erika Barootes go back and forth on The Narwhal scoop about the renewables moratorium, tension between the province and municipalities (11:45), public auto insurance (22:00), Minister Randy Boissonnault (29:00), and Poilievre's National Post op/ed (39:00).
48:05 | Emmy and Peabody Award-winning comedian Paul Mecurio tells us if he agrees with Jerry Seinfeld about political correctness killing comedy, and how he booked Paul McCartney to do his podcast.

the pause on renewables was to drive down the market share so certain individuals and groups could buy in at the deflated rate. while wind and solar won't replace non renewables any time soon, it is going to be the way of the future, and a solid investment.

I believe the pause on wind turbines was due to the agricultural sector addressing concerns which were valid because livestock and wildlife are impacted a very long distance away from these turbines which many don’t understand. Solar panels are very expensive, high risk during storms (check out hail storm in Texas) and can’t recycle them yet.

Instead of places like Alberta that do not already have a provincially run auto-insurance corporation to start creating one in AB, why not negotiate with places like BC, MB & I think SK that have provincially run insurance corporations to allow Albertans to be able to purchase insurance from them, thereby increasing choice and more competition against private insurers in Alberta that may be colluding to gouge Alberta motorists.

The UCP created Bill 8, which changes the gift limit amounts MLAs in Alberta can receive, which opens the door for MLAs to accept bribes.
Bill 8 also prevents the Alberta Ethics Commissioner from investigating MLAs who are doing unethical activities, before a provincial election in Alberta, which makes it so that the MLAs can run in the provincial election.
This is coincidentally happening, when Danielle Smith clearly broke ethics laws and conflict of interest laws.
A former Alberta Attorney General, who was also a cabinet minister under premier Peter Lougheed, had said that that's what Danielle Smith did.
Bill 8, Bill 18, and Bill 20, from the UCP are all undemocratic.

A large portion of an insurance companies revenue comes from investing the premiums. An arms length insurance company would allow the government to control the investment policy. This would be similar if Alberta had control of their portion of the CPP. The government could potentially have an influence on the industries/companies that they support through the investment policy.

If Daniel Smith were to do that you better hope that it won't be like our ICBC auto no fault insurance because if you get hurt by say a drunk driver or maybe not even a drunk driver there is no recourse because it is NO FAULT insurance you can't collect from ICBC what you are truly entitled to, you will get the bare minimum my brother in law is going through it right now with ICBC he operates his own company and may have to quit it because of the accident he already has to sell his home because they can barely make the payments any more and have been doing that for 15 years so it looks like that is going to end and possibly his business so hopefully Daniel Smith doesn't go that root out there in Alberta it won't be a good thing nobody gets blamed for an accident when there is clearly proof who was at fault.

I always thought that it was up to the person to shop around for insurance prices and what coverage you would want to have. Public liability is a must for any vehicle on roads.
Prices vary depending on your driving history so I wouldn’t want to have to pay higher rates because of wreck less drivers who probably wouldn’t be able to afford insurance due to their own actions. It’s award for respecting laws of the road and accountability for those who don’t obey laws.

    • @jamiehjalte

I am all for shopping around but when you get a market with fewer and fewer options and you have a couple of claims instantly takes you out of the running it’s no longer free market. Having government insurance doesn’t mean you get a free ride either. You’re still dinged for when you are at fault. Just because the payout isn’t determined by the fault it’s still marked on your record when you are at fault which effects your coverage. Also depending on the system you are penalized for bad driving either through license fee or your coverage costs.

How is Danielle Smith angering constituents, contradicting herself, telling so many lies, flip flopping, back tracking and doing many very costly debacles and mistakes good for Albertans?
Backroom deals? Danielle Smith does plenty of those, and they end up costing Albertans billions of dollars.
Danielle Smith has a track record as a lobbyist.
The UCP have only carried on with the fiscal ineptitude and poor planning that the Alberta PCs did, ever since Don Getty was premier of Alberta.
So far, the UCP have made well over $80 billion in very costly debacles and mistakes, and the UCP have also given Alberta a mammoth debt that is now nearly $140 billion.
The UCP have also treated the vulnerable, seniors, medical professionals, teachers, students, rural property owners, the environment, and democracy in Alberta with disdain.
Danielle Smith and the UCP are pursuing things that most Albertans oppose, and that she left of the last provincial election agenda in 2023.
This includes the very unpopular Alberta Provincial Pension Plan, an Alberta Provincial Police Force, which rural municipal leaders in Alberta oppose, because they say it will cost at least $1 billion, and open pit coal mining in the Rockies of Alberta, which has very little support, because of selenium contamination in the water, and destruction of the mountains.
If the majority of Albertans support Danielle Smith, how come she was defeated in her own riding in 2015, and she got less than 54 percent of the vote in the UCP leadership race, after 6 tries?

    • @dwaynewladyka577
      @dwaynewladyka577 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

@jbc22112 It's false. Also, Danielle Smith is contradicting herself and lying, once again. Around 2 years ago, Danielle Smith said that municipal governments should have autonomy, and they should be allowed to make their own decisions. Now, Danielle Smith is trying to control municipal leaders, with Bill 18 and 20. She accuses the federal government of doing overreach, but she does it herself with the municipal leaders in Alberta. Danielle Smith won't complete a full term as premier of Alberta, because of what she says and does wrong.

This is what Danielle Smith did, as the premier of Alberta, which is on top of the very costly debacles and mistakes that the UCP already did.
The UCP have already made well over $80 billion in very costly debacles and mistakes, and these are from Danielle Smith.
Blew billions of dollars on various voter bribery schemes, including making Albertans pay $1.2 billion for the new hockey arena for Calgary, which Danielle Smith originally opposed, when she was the Wildrose party leader, and a radio talk show host, because she said she could see no economic benefits to it, blew around $1.5 billion on the gas tax holiday vote buying scheme, and so on.
Blew $80 million on Turkish Tylenol.
Is blowing $20 billion on the R-Star debacle.
Blew money on propaganda ads of various types.
Is blowing nearly $100 million on the DynaLife debacle, which the UCP caused.
Blew $253,000 and $2 million on Preston Manning to produce a covid report that is junk.
Did absolutely nothing to stop power companies in Alberta from holding back the power, which increased power prices in Alberta exponentially, which is known as economic witholding, and has cost Albertans over $100 billion, since June of 2020.
The UCP hired many more staff for their MLAs, at a great cost to Albertans, including Danielle Smith's staff of 34.
The UCP created the largest provincial cabinet in Alberta's history, with 34 cabinet ministers, and associate ministers.
The UCP blew money on a pointless excursion to Dubai.
The UCP hired more Conservative crony friends to help restructure AHS, in a circle game move, which will solve nothing.
The UCP are blowing money on carbon sequestration, which Danielle Smith originally opposed, because she said it was very costly, and unproven technology.
More coal mining companies are suing the UCP for $10.8 billion, for breaking contract agreements.
The UCP are blowing $2 million an additional costs on someone to produce another pandemic management report.
The UCP are blowing money on an office in Ottawa, which will have no practical purpose.
The UCP are blowing $9 million on a study to see how feasible a high speed rail system will be for Alberta.
Municipalities in Alberta must charge increased municipal property taxes, because the UCP lost Alberta hundreds of millions of dollars by forsaking collecting property taxes from the oil companies in Alberta.
The UCP's red tape reduction strategies, has put Albertans at risk, such as at daycares in Alberta.
Danielle Smith and the UCP were negligent with the tailings pond leaks in northern Alberta, and now First Nations communities are suing the UCP and the AER, because of it.
Alberta has the highest rate of inflation in Canada, the highest power prices in Canada, due to Ralph Klein's electricity deregulation, TransAlta manipulating power prices, and economic witholding from the UCP, the highest use of food bank usage in Canada, and the highest rate of unemployment in Western Canada.
Danielle Smith refused to have by-elections in ridings where there were no MLAs, and she ran in a riding where a UCP MLA, Michaela Frey was, who stepped down, without completing her her as an MLA, just so Danielle Smith could run there.
In return, Danielle Smith gave Michaela Frey a well paying, pointless position.
Alberta has the lowest amount of Legislature sittings of any provincial or territorial government in Canada, and Danielle Smith reduced it even more.
In 2023, the Alberta Legislature had only 5 weeks of Legislature sittings.
Danielle Smith and the UCP created Bill 8, which changes the gift limit amounts MLAs can receive in Alberta, which opens the door for MLAs to accept bribes.
Bill 8, also prevents the Alberta Ethics Commissioner from investigating MLAs who are doing unethical activities, before a provincial election in Alberta, which makes it so that the MLAs can run in the provincial elections in Alberta.
Bill 18, Bill 20, and Bill 21, also show that Danielle Smith and the UCP do not respect democracy at all.
Danielle Smith and the UCP are pursuing the Alberta Provincial Pension Plan, which most Albertans oppose, the Alberta Provincial Police Force, which rural municipal leaders in Alberta oppose, because they say it will cost at least $1 billion, and open pit coal mining in the Rockies of Alberta, which most Albertans oppose, because of selenium contamination in the water, and permanently altering the mountains.
Danielle Smith and the UCP intentionally left these things off of the last provincial election agenda in Alberta, because they knew they would get defeated if they included them on their provincial election agenda, in 2023.
This isn't saving Alberta, and it isn't helping Alberta at all.
Former Conservative politicians in Alberta have said that they don't trust Danielle Smith, because she is so dishonest, and they are correct.
The only good and sensible Conservative premier in Alberta was Peter Lougheed.
There were absolutely no others at all.

It's Natural Gas, Oil, Coal and the likes that generate revenues to fund & run govt & social services any NDP personal telling you about green jobs of the future is selling you a bloody pipe dream, I have yet to see a city, state, province or country where these so called green jobs are giving their economy a boom. Even the stupid EV factories & EV Battery announcements by Ottawa are going to end up being billions of tax dollars down the drain as private sector folks are hitting the brake on EV adoption.
Ms Smith's approach of trying to beef up our heritage fund and find efficiencies within govt is the way forward any other thing Nenshi and the other NDP leadership candidates are telling you are bloody pipe dreams that will take us back into the era of more debt from borrowing, higher personal & corporate taxes & businesses and investment dollars leaving Alberta.

You shouldn’t trust any politicians but I would trust Danielle smith WAY MORE than majority of the people in any level of government lately.
She is smart, factual, well spoken with integrity and language that are easier for most people to have an understanding of issues or topic.
She haven’t let anyone who think they are superior which many people often are easily offended by having a knowledges, intellectual person who is straight forward and not easily walked over or intimidated. I’ve witnessed her willingness to listen to others who have different opinions or perspectives and not just being a bully of doing things her way or no way. I respect her so far.

Hmmmm, seems to me Danielle Smith said she wouldn’t politicize Trans people. Did she? Yes, the most restrictive policies planned in any province. Didn’t she also promise to reduce income tax? Now told no, not happening. I think I would take everything she says with a huge grain of salt.

Wind and solar will not solve our energy solutions. We need reliable base load power which solar and wind do not supply. It should be noted that Alberta has the most per capita solar and wind in Canada.

Kind of off topic, but Alberta could do like other provinces and have ACTUAL 'hydro', which largely doesn't face those problems. There is NO power generation source that pays off faster than dams. Manitoba, BC, even saskatchewan to an extent have 'base load' power. And of course pretty much the whole CONTINENT is connected to the same grid.

It should be noted that the last time Edmonton had a brownout, it was because a couple of natgas plants went down. Instead of acknowledging this, Smith opted to blame renewables when it was at a time of day they wouldn't be actually generating energy. It's a great strategy if you want to sell more oil and gas!

Bingo we need to turn to these small Nuclear Power Plants That should be available to the markets in2027 and carbon capture for gas generating power plants Wind and solar is fantasy world these people live Just imagine when we have all these EV plugged in

@@JonathanSicoli It should be noted that when cold spell hit Alberta renewable supplied .03% of the power required. In other words nothing of significance You would’ve to be a bloody fool to rely on renewable sources in Alberta Nuclear and carbon capture are the way forward
