The iceburg did flip over on the last day the office servers were open, but that silly lil gift to the true believers probably isn't in private servers
@16:00 Austin you're so fucking right about how to view paintings honestly... I'm a fine arts painter, so I'm particularly biased, but one of my biggest beefs with art museums/galleries is that 5 minutes is nowhere near the attention span necessary to let a really good painting sink into you. Tbh I think a certain subset of people don't "know how to interact with art" (though there is no WRONG way, just to be clear. It's different for every individual), and the pressurized and exhausting environment of a museum is not conducive towards the interaction to begin with (bonus points if they do not provide any accessible, actually useful information regarding the pieces or artist). I once stayed overnight as a guest in a gallery and the opportunity to really learn, study, and develop a relationship directly with a painting was rather profound.
"Some Star Trek fan will answer us" about how a transporter works. It's my time to shine; I got a whole Star Trek channel. The short answer (per the actual creators of the show) is, "it works very well, thank you." The somewhat longer answer is that the show itself is pretty inconsistent about it. But the intention seems to be that basically your atoms are converted into energy, and those specific packets of energy are sent to the target location and re-converted into matter. But it also transports your "neural energy" as its own thing, which in the show is effectively your soul (which people do canonically have). It builds your body back, then plugs your soul into the shell. Critically, your neural energy maintains consciousness throughout the transport cycle. We have previously seen a guy's perspective through the whole cycle, and he's aware the whole time. But I'm still 100% convinced it murders everyone who transports. Starfleet is lying to us.
Also, HOW DARE YOU test Austin's idea of just starting a conversation without engaging the audience and not have the now costumary conversation about what the intro should be. The intro should be you guys talking about what the intro should be
in case you haven't googled it yet: a "great circle" is any circle that goes around the globe at the largest point, the equator is an example. there's some (conspiracy?) theories about things like ancient sites aligned on one of these great circles, which I assume is what the game is about

the transporter thing is pure existential horror. the new you would a perfect copy who feels like same person, but the original you is erased. graveyard dead. and as someone who has gone under anesthesia like a dozen times this is something i have spent literally hours feeling really uncomfortable about.

It's kind of crazy how many people think that "innocent until proven guilty" matters outside of the courtroom. Unless you're on the jury then don't worry about it. You can totally just say things that you think are funny.

Another great episode, thank you both! As mentioned, vacuum first to get the bulk, dust second for a nice finish. I find Miele to be very fine vacuum brand, expensive in some cases, but very very nice.
If I recall correctly, the transporter turns your matter into energy, beams that energy into wherever you are going and turns that energy back into matter, there is an episode from The Next Generation where they talk about basically the same questions you guys are talking about (A couple, actually) there is "Realm of Fear" in which a random dude that is terrified of transporters deal with the fear and there is "Relics" in which they find the original Scotty that survived in a lost ship by rigging a transporter beam to never finish beaning him and keep him in a sort of stasis as energy (and I guess data) I love TNG so much (No, I did not know the names of the episodes from the top of my head but I remember the episodes and google the names) I think there are more episodes that touch on the subject, but don't remember other episodes where it is a central thing
It makes more sense to completely atomicly dissemble a person and then just store the material to create a person being transported to this side. The transporter on the other side would do the same thing. Transmitting the data to reassemble is one thing, but I feel like it would be much easier to just keep a stockpile of material to rebuild a person at each location, and you being vaporized just restocks it. Like 3D printing material if you could melt down a piece and turn it back into wire.
if I remember correctly there are people in star trek who don't use teleporters and insist on shuttles, and it's seen as an old-timey phobia. There's also an episode where the first Riker wasn't destroyed when he was beamed up and they find his abandoned duplicate later

9:30 is a perfect example of why I love Austin, I think that same kind of shit all the time. Its that, driving trough a neighborhood at night where every house's window's are portals to other worlds
Austin your vacuum is actual trash if it can't suck up dust which almost literally has no weight unless its wet. It's the lightest thing it should be able to pick up and the main reason to own it. What *does* your vacuum pick up if not dust?
Totally played Starcraft and WC3 in my aunt's kitchen. There was something about sharing a novel luxury like a PC in a public place in the home: by necessity, it was rationed between everyone in small precious doses to do simple things like play a small game, check email or talk to friends for a while. Technology had yet to pervade every waking second of our lives and make it easier than ever to entertain ourselves with no one around. Your family members/roommates could see and choose to take part, or at least know what you were up to at that moment. I feel like I use tech and entertainment to drown out the lonely hours more than enhance human interaction like back then. Also bonus if your comp was in the kitchen because soda and string cheese were like 3 steps away (to take the edge off of losing with Eagle54)
So if you know that your previous self is dying when you teleport, but you keep all your memories and you are physically fine, would you do it for the convenience . Cause on one hand it seems like if you can accept that there isn't a real downside but it is also a little horrifying
What's the difference between "dying" by teleportation and just falling asleep. I lose awareness of myself when I fall asleep but wake up with the same memories. It feels similar to me in that my consciousness could have "died" to some degree before waking up and continuing on with my life like nothing happened.
Our family computer was on our small indoor porch. I used to wake up before my parents, put on a jacket and mittens, and sneak out there to play computer games/go on the Internet Also regarding The Last Crusade, I have a tradition of watching it after any breakup. I don't know why it just happened
Alright, as much as I like the cold open, for record keeping purposes, I would recommend an introduction like Mem suggested. Don't know if you're going to number these episodes, but for long-term podcasting (and if we as fans want to go back and see episodes or want to remember bits) and intro would def help us. Just my opinion, but this is stuff I've noticed for my love of other podcasts I listen to, and I occasionally like to go back, and this stuff makes things so nice. Like QoL type stuff
I'm so happy that the ripples of "Finding a Freak" continue to be felt in subsequent episodes. Please -- and I say this without an ounce of sarcasm -- talk more art theory in the future. Also if you ever get a PO box I have fan art to send in!
ah i love this episode, any austin rly bringing the philosophical game design brain that he uses in all of my fav vids of his and mem is ofc great too, with the club penguin lore n the like
yknow what i feel like austin relishing his lack of a 20 minute timer on gaming time is why he appreciates stopping and taking in the vibe so much in games now
To answer the start trek transporter question, where do you think the matter for the food replicator comes from 🤔 these are the things start fleet command don't want you to know
fun fact, in the arctic the only natural disaster is winter. if you do not dress warm enough you'll lose blood in your fingers and toes and then they'll have to get removed. i was always told that as a child 💀
Tornadoes are super cool. I think we as Americans are desensitized to them, but they don't happen very often anywhere else in the world. Volcanoes are also amazing. You both should look up Rotorua, New Zealand. It's an active volcanic area. They have tons of steam vents just coming up. I saw sewer grates corroded by sulfur, it felt otherworldly
Austin, I appreciate you examining all of your behaviors from an ethical perspective. If everyone did that, then the world would be a much better place. That being said, you should really listen to your dad’s advice.
sometimes i wonder how different my life would have been if i got into club penguin like my former childhood bestie wanted. What does podcast even mean are we peas
Austin needs Swiffer Dusters. (They make off brand ones too that work fine) The fluffy ones on the little handles. They TRAP dust and u just *fluff* and *swipe* them on surfaces and BOOM, dusted.
3:56 I think the idea is that the transporter breaks you down into subatomic particles and then does the whole E=mc^2 thing to convert the matter into electromagnetic energy (light), then you travel as light and arrive instantaneously because photons don't experience time. As far as sci-fi is concerned, it's a pretty believable fantasy technology.
They said that in this very podcast. I feel like I'm going crazy that people keep bringing it up like they didn't mention it. Mem said it happened and even brought up the dance floor. 32:58
the dust conversation is interesting because i think you might actually be dealing with different dust? i think humidity makes dust stick to things more and nola is one of the most humid places in the country, in Florida it can become like a really gross coating that has to be wiped off. that doesn't happen in less humid places, not sure if places mem has lived were dry enough to make a difference tho
When I told my doctor 'but its fine this is normal for me' I ended up fast-tracked to the gyno because it turned out I was basically bleeding out 😂 but I'm in the UK so its all free. If I was American I'd be 'yeah no this always happens'-ing into my grave
It's hilarious how mad Austin got when told that he should vacuum up the dust before he wipes it up. Then he complains that he felt like he was living in ancient times when he just wiped it up. I get what he's saying though it doesn't completely remove the dust...
Austin, your parents were wild for saying watching your sibling counted towards the draconian 20 min time limit. Actively fighting against sibling bonding with that one lmao Also, Gandalf wand?? lmao Also also, feather duster to help with the dust i think
I have to keep adding more thoughts because i have them BUT I love the sentiment of giving the nuance you want to see in the world, that’s a very kind sentiment! And who cares about the intro, my favorite bit is how every podcast just ends mid-sentence
Guys, I think Austin's vacuum sucks (or doesn't suck, really) What do you even do with a vacuum if it doesn't pick up dust?????? Its literally their main purpuse! What do you use it for if not dust?
his vacuum probably does suck but i think this might literally be a difference in the dust they're dealing with, Austin lives in one of the most humid places in the country and I think that literally makes the dust stick to things more. in Florida dust will turn into like a coating that needs to be scrubbed off it sux
@@Vallam23 You might be right, I didn't consider that. Is it like the dust in the kitchen that mixes with grease and its harder to clean? That would make sense but you should still be able to vacuum most of it
Buying an extra seat on the plane does nothing to your carbon footprint if it wasn't going to be bought. If someone was going to buy it then it reduces the carbon footprint of the plane since it's carrying less weight. But the person will probably get on another plane so it's no net change.
Airlines benefit greatly if people buy extra seats since their profit margin goes up. The dream would be one person buying all the seats. Though it might hurt their image with the public.
34:16 As someone who took a few cybersecurity courses in college, it brings joy to my heart to hear someone has started using a password manager. It's not only a huge upgrade in security hygiene, but it actually makes your digital life a lot easier to manage. Usually security is a compromise of convenience, but in this case it's a win-win scenario (after the initial drag of adding existing accounts). No more countless password reset emails, and no fear in needing to sign up for yet another account somewhere.
there was a thing in habbo hotel where people could work basically by recruiting people so they could get a work too and recruit other people to do that too, I used to go some rooms like that bc I thought you could get rich but they only paid a coin or a trash furniture. I guess it was better to gamble and exchange money irl in dark web and stuff. also on the plane seat topic, is letting people sitting in the place you bought a real thing? like, you bought this seat and you're sitting there but someone else wants you to change seats because xyz reasons. at least for what I've read online this happens a lot, it's been years since I set foot on a plane
You can't just buy two seats on the plane in the same name on most flights -maybe for USA internal flights idk about that- but generally if you buy two seats and only one person turns up they will give it to one of the people they have over-sold the tickets to. I've seen it on those documentary/reality shows about airports and they don't care if you wanted extra space they will still sell it to someone else and you won't even get a refund.
oh shit double comment. @50:00 in LOST Hurley buys every seat on the plane when they're trying to return to the island, because he doesn't want anyone else to get stuck there, so that's clearly possible
I know it's a hassle, but there's something like... Reverent about making a new account for all these old games. I definitely got preyed on as a tween. In AOL days we just straight had our name sex and age all out there. He just messaged me out of nowhere. He said he was married with kids so it felt 'safer'. Even though it definitely creeped me out it was also nice to get attention unfortunately. Anyways! Loving the cast!
I've spent too much time thinking about this private jet vs a lot of seats thing. I have 11 cats and the time is coming for me to move across the US. Honestly, I think my broke ass has to rent a private jet. Lol. Great podcast!
@@bodaugherty9654i intensely feared coming to the conclusion of thinking an intro is important for this podcast, since i initially agreed with austin that they aren’t

Also also, feather duster to help with the dust i think
Also, that siri response made me cry
I don’t see how buying the extra seat increases carbon footprint, the plane is flying anyway? idk about that one
I have to keep adding more thoughts because i have them BUT I love the sentiment of giving the nuance you want to see in the world, that’s a very kind sentiment!
And who cares about the intro, my favorite bit is how every podcast just ends mid-sentence
Guys, I think Austin's vacuum sucks (or doesn't suck, really)
What do you even do with a vacuum if it doesn't pick up dust?????? Its literally their main purpuse! What do you use it for if not dust?
his vacuum probably does suck but i think this might literally be a difference in the dust they're dealing with, Austin lives in one of the most humid places in the country and I think that literally makes the dust stick to things more. in Florida dust will turn into like a coating that needs to be scrubbed off it sux
@@Vallam23 You might be right, I didn't consider that. Is it like the dust in the kitchen that mixes with grease and its harder to clean? That would make sense but you should still be able to vacuum most of it
Austin, thank you for activating my Siri on my drive home from work. Also, I thought Mem’s penguin was holding a gun until you said it was a trumpet.
Not the mouse on the screen i feel like im in school
@janczy9206 and now i will forever put my cursor on top and think about holding hands
This is a good podcast
34:16 As someone who took a few cybersecurity courses in college, it brings joy to my heart to hear someone has started using a password manager. It's not only a huge upgrade in security hygiene, but it actually makes your digital life a lot easier to manage. Usually security is a compromise of convenience, but in this case it's a win-win scenario (after the initial drag of adding existing accounts). No more countless password reset emails, and no fear in needing to sign up for yet another account somewhere.
The convenience still cost you when your password manager gets compromised but I agree it is a worthy tradeoff
The long lost habo husband must be found lol
there was a thing in habbo hotel where people could work basically by recruiting people so they could get a work too and recruit other people to do that too, I used to go some rooms like that bc I thought you could get rich but they only paid a coin or a trash furniture.
I've seen it on those documentary/reality shows about airports and they don't care if you wanted extra space they will still sell it to someone else and you won't even get a refund.
amazing ending
Thanks for this Christmas gift
You two should watch Christopher Nolan’s “The Prestige” - the whole movie is basically about the teleporter / clone conundrum you talked about
Last Crusade is actually good. You ought to see it. I bet you’d like it.
oh shit double comment. @50:00 in LOST Hurley buys every seat on the plane when they're trying to return to the island, because he doesn't want anyone else to get stuck there, so that's clearly possible
Finally the best video game
8:46 sketchy vibe 😂😂
There has to be an intro, i fear. even if it’s you discussing if you’re going to one or not
Why do you fear it?
@@bodaugherty9654i intensely feared coming to the conclusion of thinking an intro is important for this podcast, since i initially agreed with austin that they aren’t
