To no surprise, I absolutely loved it:) While I may know basically everything about My Scene, this video definitely connected some dots in my head, a lot of things start to make sense now! Also just wanted to add that Street Style was NOT a UK exclusive, the line was released in all of Europe and Mid-/South America, probably the first one to not be released in the US :D
Yes, Street Style was released in Latin America as well (except Brazil). And Brazil used to release the Madison doll instead of Nolee (Except for the Adidas line), which is weird since Barbie Nikki dolls weren't released here generally.
Kennedy's introduction straight up sounds like a synopsis to a horror movie. You're moving to the other side of the country and having one last hurrah with your friends but then you come across another girl who could be your twin, and the next thing you know, she takes your best friends, boyfriend, and dog while you're away. 🤔
I think the decision to change Barbie for Kenedy was very good, it didn't make sense for Barbie to participate in My Scene since she never lived in New York, it's like imagining Barbie in the Monster High or Ever After High line, isn't it strange? Mattel wanted to end Bratz so badly that it didn't even care about the logic behind it. My Scene was never supposed to be connected with the Barbie Franchise.
@@camicristina876 oh really? I always had a headcanon that My Scene was a prequel to the Barbie movies, maybe happening after or before the Barbie Diaries.
This is what kills me about Mattel, they would have a good idea and pretty good sales. But that's not enough for them, they want to over take the market instead of just releasing something and making a decent amount of money. Or how they did with Monster High, had an amazing idea with Alternative fashion and good sales. Then caved to pressure and change what made Monster High unique and different. Which turned even their most hard core fans against them. As someone who was growing up in this Era, I would have loved a health competition between Bratz and My Scene. Think about how we could have gotten dolls, with different fashions of the time. Bratz could have been very California style based fashion, and My Scene could have been very New York style based fashion. That way we would have gotten a different look at how the East Coast fashion and West Coast fashion differ on the most current trends. It could have been amazing but nope Mattel wanted to be a Monopoly 😒
My Scene dolls were my absolute favorites! 💕 2022 would have been their 20th anniversary and I wish Mattel had done something to celebrate these iconic dolls. A re-issue of the original trio would have been awesome. Thanks so much for your videos; it's lovely to see the history of these wonderful dolls.❤️
Well now it makes more sense why they removed Barbie, with the context Mattel was not gonna sacrifice Barbie’s image and it really was damaging her with the comparisons and low sales, thank you so much also I didn’t noticed until now how Mattel was changing styles with my scene until they settled with the sweet looks which look disjointed compared to the sultry face paint, I definitely liked more the mature look even as a child. Another thing is that in addition to the sweet looks the fashions and details became simpler and basic in most of the lines it’s really funny that My Scene became very Barbie and Barbie in 2007/2008 became very My Scene, probably again just showed how Mattel was struggling to cater to its audiences
I definitely agree with you about the Barbie/My Scene aesthetic swap. I felt like Day2Nite and Candy Glam easily could have been My Scene lines or Street Sweet could have been a Barbie line
I had the fab face Wesley/Madison and her face literally melted over time... I took great care of my dolls when I was a kid but this was so traumatic 💀
I think Juicy Bling might have been the last My Scene line widely available in the US - after that, they just sort of disappeared off shelves with no word from Mattel. It was a wild ride for collectors, because ordering things off the internet was still in its infancy and a difficult task to do, especially from abroad, also the later lines released after Juicy Bling like Icy Bling, Photo Fabulous or Street Sweet would pop up in random stores like Meijers despite regular toy stores stores not carrying them so if you were really dedicated you would sometimes have to drive to a different state just to get that gotdamn doll! And we only knew about that thanks to forums, etc. - Mattel literally refused to give official information on which dolls will be sold in the US and why they weren't available in toy stores, but smaller regional chains only. A very strange time but the MS collectors were a great community - I got my Golden Bling dolls from a forum user who was buying them in bulk and sendingto those collectors who were unable to drive to their nearest Meijers. People were helping each other out so much! Totally Charmed Kennedy was my first ever international online purchase I think in 2007. I still rememer how anxious I was thinking how the hell is a doll gonna arrive here from France, this must be a scam and my cc info has probably been stolen. But it did arrive and soon buying things online became a regular thing that was not a source of stress anymore haha. Great video, I have never seen the Mattel version of Bratz so can't wait to see what else you've got in store!
I really appreciate your insight on the whole distribution situation! I vaguely remember the Meijers name and couple of other retailers being thrown around in the My Scene group on Flickr once Mattel made the shift. Also, it's refreshing to hear about collectors helping each other out and not scalping each other.
Welcome back and we miss you so much. I’m not gonna lie, the bling era of My Scene was amazing. I actually loved the screening on them. The girls looks more mature, that’s why I liked about that era.
Long time, no see! I’m glad you returned with this fantastic video!! Even though I love the post-bling My Scene dolls from this era, I will admit the changes made in the line-up and the introductions of Kennedy and Nia may have contributed to the line’s decline. I love Nia, she was a great addition to the line, but Kennedy’s introduction never made sense to me, but after watching your video, it adds up a little bit. But personally, as much as Mattel wants to make them different, her and Barbie are literally the same character. Also, I never understood why Nolee got sidelined as a character exclusive doll in international markets for some of these lines. It makes me wonder, why couldn’t they just include her into the lineup, and why give her the same outfit as Madison for international markets? Did Madison not sell well in Europe and South America? I need answers. Thank you for shouting out my Mattel Bratz video by the way! I really appreciate it! 💋
Black dolls were not released in most European countries (like Greece and France) and Latin America, so I suppose Madison dolls didn't sell well. on the other hand, black dolls didn't sell well in Brazil but they were released for a few years (1998-2005), like Madison is very common here, and my friends used to have a few black dolls (Cali Girl Christie, Jam n Glam Christie, Sit in Style Christie, RIo de Janeiro Christie, Tia from Barbie Diaries, etc)
I agree with everything you said like Barbie and Kennedy are exactly the same people. Had the same pet and the boyfriend too. Tbh, i always prefer blonde Delancey. They had her replacing Nolee and I was so mad about this.
I'm from Chile and I was just like 10 when all of this happened, but we loved Madison just as much as the other girls. I kinda remember Nia too. We lost the interest because my older cousin grew up, and the part of us who still were into dolls became interested on -Monster High- another Mattel doll line. Which was actually my little sister's childhood. Also this time our parents could kinda afford the dolls instead of playing with regular or alternative Barbie dolls, so I guess economy was better. Also when I saw the My Scene with Kennedy commercial at my teens I was like... That's Barbie c'mon, who is Kennedy 🤣
I loved the MyScene dolls i owned and I still have some. Their fashion was so stylish and beautiful, its a shame they fazed it out. Thank you for that wonderful retrospective, now i can sleep restful knowing what happened to my fav dolline (/hj)
Did they ever try to do a Gossip Girl x My Scene collab? Seems like a ln obvious way to call back to their initial concept of fashion dolls from the city?
Barbie and Bratz they both copy each other by the movie and dolls releases during the whole time of my scene and they got inspired by Bratz to make my scene dolls. So honestly both dolls are amazing and beautiful in their own special way. So I had both doll lines when I was little. So Im a doll girl at heart and the whole lawsuit is a time in doll history.
I honestly hated this era. I stopped liking them as a child after they changed the animation style, took away each of the dolls’ unique personalities and styles, and gave them a more glamorous look. Probably as an adult I would’ve liked the change more but as a child, part of what I loved about My Scene was their relatability. They were like the big sisters I never had, I wanted to be just like them. But this era took away that relatability. I couldn’t see myself in them anymore, they were just another fashion doll.
Very good job on this series! I’m thoroughly enjoying it! However, this one ticked me off the most - Kennedy coming in and stealing Barbie’s life, even her boyfriend!? Really river?! - getting rid of Ellis, Sutton and nolee dolls and morphing Delancey into a nolee hybrid - Mattel worming their way to owning the bratz brands - and another reminder about the bling bling and street style dolls which are so expensive now I’ll prob never own one 😩 Haha but great job I can tell you put a lot of research and effort into this!

the Mattel Bratz and the "Growing Up" boobie dolls blew my mind! This is so cool i never really looked into MyScene but they were really gorgeous dolls- especially after the new look they gave them
I am appalled that Mattel won that ridiculous lawsuit. There's only so many ways to make a fashion doll. Bratz were like the least Barbie fashion doll made. I can't believe some idiot ruled they were similar enough to favor Mattel. My Scene is far more of a Bratz copy than Bratz were a Barbie copy. I had and liked both, but Bratz got popular bc they weren't Barbie. They also had a ton of cool books, games, shows etc. The lore proved how not Barbie they were
Kennedy getting Barbies life is wild Like just imagine a girl that looks like u then she steals ur life , friends, pets and stuff! This is so confusing lol
They ruined Barbie around this time, this is when they stopped caring about the dolls and started shoveling out cheap numbered dolls can’t even be bothered to name them, I used to get 3.99 Barbie’s at the drug store and even they had names for their outfits & dolls.
Does this mean that Bratz were - by legal consideration - then considered a knock off for MyScene, or that simply both competing brands were Mattel's property?
The argument was that the Bratz dolls were prototypes that Mattel had rights to because Carter Bryant made them when he was there. The complications came about after he pitched it to MGA and it succeeded, despite the fact that Mattel didn't want it initially.
