As a Barbie collector, I kinda miss when a doll line gets into Mattel's nerve every once in a while because they tend to be comfortable whenever they think there's no competition and that leads to dolls with poor quality and execution.
All facts, when Bratz gave Mattel competition. It put the battery in their back, to get creative. I was a pre-teen during that time. And some of the best dolls we will ever get, came out of that
My favorite part of the book was from the final lawsuit when they ended up making Mattel’s CEO pick between a Mattel doll and a Bratz doll and he sat there for a long time and still guessed wrong! So crazy😭
I am both. I think both Barbie and Bratz dolls are iconic and will forever have a special place in my heart! ❤ That being said, if I had to pick one, I'd have to ask which era are we talking? Because if it's current playline Barbie? I'd choose Bratz, but if we're talking 90s and early 00s Barbies? Barbie, all the way!
It's so funny that people objected to Bratz style. I was a 90's teen & wore dresses like that for CHURCH & my grandmother bought me the clothes! SHE even picked them out. She bought me a black lace shirt & a faux leather mini dress that I wore together TO CHURCH! I didn't even kiss a boy until I was 18.😂 I still have my OG Sasha, the one at 13:14 , I her because I owned that exact outfit down to the lipstick. So many of the things the Brats wore were what we did. That Sasha was my 1st mini me. I wouldn't have thought about dolls at that age if the fashion wasn't that accurate.
My mom used to buy my sisters & I any type of doll, Barbie, Bratz, Polly Pocket, etc. but, she loveddddd Bratz because they had dark skin dolls that looked like my sisters & I. & style wise, we were always more of the Bratz type. Bratz also had funner games on their website.
He was right in saying that they weren’t trashy. I was a bratz over Barbie girl even though I loved both, but as a kid I never thought that, only adults corrupt things. Kids don’t know what to associate anything with anything until they’re taught that.
Mattel was so petty, shady, bitter, and desperate. The fact that they started to make their own Bratz dolls after getting the rights is very telling. I prefer Barbie aesthetically, but the lawsuit was tacky. Clearly they were scared someone dethroned Barbie. Nowadays they don't even try to compete with quality, they just make their dolls wholesome and affordable for the sake of longevity. I haven't seen a fashionable Barbie in a long time.
The Mattel bratz were horrifying! Mattel stay in your lane, you make the cute/pretty dolls and MGA makes the fashionable/trendy dolls. I need both in my life.
To me, what hurt the Bratz was the secret date commercial. parents wouldn’t have been so peeved if it weren’t for that. And MGA could’ve released more dolls for the live action film-Specifically, dolls with outfits from the movie, and NOT only just Cloe and Yasmin. When Mattel isn’t competing with Bratz, Barbie actually does well
This was a really well-researched video! Thank you for doing this. I have always been a Barbie girl with some Bratz dolls rather than the other way around. I certainly spend more money on Barbie than I do on Bratz because you can't buy everything! I grew up with Barbie so that's where my loyalty lies but I still enjoy Bratz. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where everybody just got along?....
As a kid I had a lot of Barbie dolls, suddenly I started receiving Bratz dolls as Christmas presents and birthday presents, so they became a huge part of my childhood. However my mom got rid of all my childhood Bratz and Barbie dolls. Unfortunately I can’t really re collect my Bratz dolls because they are extremely expensive on the second hand market, so I went with Barbie instead during the beginning of my high school years. But Monster high quickly became my ultimate favorite because I loved what they stood for. That every monster was welcome freaky flaws and all, and me being autistic and ADHD this quote really resonated with me. In conclusion I’m more of a monster high fan lol.
I love both doll lines. I think each one of them have their highlights moments 🤷🏻♂️. Love that you mentioned Lily Martinez , she also was involved experimenting with the monster high prototypes 🫶🏻. She’s such a talented woman
Joey congrats on 100k subscribers! Well deserved! I can't thank you enough for making me smile through some tough days. You're one of my favourite channels. Love From Christchurch New Zealand 🎉💖💐🫶
03:59 the “Mmmmm Bratz” had me 😂😂. Also, this was such a fun and comprehensive video! Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this with us. You did an amazing job covering the different facets like Mattel’s typical MOs and both companies’ CEOs backgrounds. I got way more out of this video than I would’ve imagined 🤯
Am a Bratz kind of person while I grow up with Barbie. I perper the OG Bratz as I am someone who likes alt and generally more stylish fashion plus the drama.
I was a Bratz girlie. I couldn't tell you why but I just never really liked Barbie growing up and I don't think I ever owned one. But Bratz? I loved the characters, the styles, the show, the movies and it just resonated with me. I remember seeing all the anti-Bratz stuff on the news and my mum said it was ridiculous and never stopped me from playing with them
I was a Barbie girl until this year, but now I love her and Bratz! Their rivalry was how I found out about Bratz back in the day! They're both iconic! ;D
I LOVED THE MY SCENE DOLLS. I actually liked them more than the Bratz dolls because they could fit my already existing Barbie stiff which, I guess, means I am more Barbie....LOL
My first love was Barbie, i'm born in 93, i was 8years old when Bratz came to life, in 2003 i got my first one and it was all of my personality after that, Bratz is and will always be the true love for me, it change everything, MGAE know how to reach popularity and for that, there's no question. I'M A BRATZ FAN.
I listened to the book on tape and it was very interesting. Poor Carter Bryant lost everything and his "roommate" even stole from him. Very Sad for such a creative person.
Personally, I always loved them both, as well as the MyScene dolls. Each had their unique style, stories and each of them inspired me in different ways. I could never choose only Barbie or only Bratz. Barbie, with her sweet looks and fairytale atmosphere and Bratz with their super edgy style and attitude, what's not to love?
I'm totally Bratz, practically since I was born I think Bratz are fantastic, I've always been fascinated by them. They are so unique and different. I say this even as a designer, Bratz's work is not just their clothes, but it is the entire structure of the doll. They inspire new things, not just recreate the real world.
Joey, you did a FANTASTIC job with this story of the details on the Bratz vs Barbie court battle. By coincidence I just bought the book "you don't own me" by Orly Lobel. I'll definitely be reading it this weekend. This was excellent work. I was on the edge of my seat! Love your channel.❤❤❤❤
I thought Bryant was named after Bryant Park. Most of the dolls in the my scene line, with the exception of Barbie, seemed to be named after places in New York.
I was born in 82 so grew up with Barbie and also Sindy. Such a great time to grow up! 80s and 90s toys were and still are the best in my opinion 🤗 oh and also Jem! I will say, I do like the look of bratz dolls but I've never owned any unfortunately..
I am more of a Barbie gal - I was 11 when Bratz came out and thought myself "too old" to play with dolls at that age. We all know how silly that is now, but such was the early 2000s... Plus their removable feet kinda freaked me out. 😂
I was always and still are a bratz girl, my little sister was a barbie girl- she grew out of loving dolls but i never did. But we used to have amazing stories with our dolls and they just blended in together 😂
Team Bratz! How Mattel/Barbie get away with blatantly copying other brands Toys is criminal. Yet they go after any company that remotely 'intrudes' on their assets, no matter how much of a stretch. They lost in the end with how poor the quality of Mattel products are now.
Similar case happened in the comics. For a time a company called FAWCETT COMICS created the character of Captain Marvel. And, back then, outsold the Superman comics. DC sued Fawcett claiming that the character was a copy of Superman. Eventually DC won. And not only did Fawcett not continue selling the comics but DC bought the company and incorporated the character (and all the ones created under Fawcett) to the DC Universe. Thing is that because of Marvel proper they couldn´t call the character Captain Marvel in their covers. Inside in the stories there was no problem. Instead, the would use the name Shazam. Up until 2011 when DC decided to just call the character Shazam himself to avoid issues.
I am more of Bratz fan. I growing up playing with Barbies in early 60’s. Then my mom told me I am too old playing with Barbie’s around mid 70’s. I used to loved playing with Barbie’s. When I had my daughter…she’s only 7 years old I first saw Bratz in fall of 2001 at Walmart. It spoke to me. It reminds me those good quality of clothes I used to see when Barbie’s first came out because they look so realistic. So I decided to start collecting them along with my daughter…I decorated her bedroom full of Bratz and tons of dolls with playthings. We have great time playing with dolls together. When she outgrown them, I told her to save them - never give it away to any one. I even saved all of her stuff and my collections. Thankfully I did….because they are so pricey today. I still back to collecting Bratz again during 29th year of anniversary. ❤🔥❤🔥
Yeah, they're ugly, but the fashion was incredibly accurate for me at that age. Sasha at 13:14 was the 1st doll I purchased as an adult. I think I was 19.
Im just 10 mins in but wow i've got to say, What an amazing video. This is exactly what I was looking for. Deep Dive in Bratz vs. Barbie. As I grew up both. I had like a Barbie, i think 2003 smth. I got like a barbie house once, and the car ofc. And later got one of the original Bratz. And it was my favorite since. Love your enthusiasm and thank you for making this❤
Thank you for this informative and entertaining video! I thought I knew everything about this case but you brought up new things I hadn’t heard of before! Also wtf was up with Jade having an ED? Glad that was scrapped! Keep up the good work!
Awesome video! I'm a barbie girl but only because my parents were strict. I asked for a bratz for Christmas and I swear they found the least edgy one. I barely remember what she looked like but I do remember the dark wash jeans being so cool. The barbies I had never wore natural and realistic colors.
20:50 I just wanna say Bratz and My Scene stole from each other, there's lots of my scene lines that came out first. Like Bratz Masquerade copied Masquerade Madness, Mystic Chic copies Perfume Party. i collect and love both!!! Great high quality video as always Joey :) also burdine looks 50 compared to you hahahahaah
Great video! I’m a Barbie collector but can appreciate the variety Bratz provides. I don’t have any Bratz dolls. I do have a few my scene in my Barbie collection. Love this video!
Loved this, this was THE definitive video on the battle. 💞 So many nuggets of info I hadn't heard before. Great job! Now I need to read "You Don't Own Me".
Just found your video randomly. I have that Cool Blue Barbie still. So crazy to see it in a video in 2024 lol. I remember the Generation Girl line for Barbie too. Would love a video on that. This entire video was super informational and makes me want to dig through my old dolls in my parent's basement.
I'm too old for Bratz, and i love my Barbies. But my inner tweenybopper goth kid really wants some Monster High dolls. I just buy them for my daughter instead.
What an absolutely brilliant video. I knew they had a rivalry but I had no clue about how it unfolded. I played with Barbie’s throughout my entire childhood, but I got really into Bratz as a preteen and MyScene as a teen. The clothes were just more modern than Barbie at that time, and as a kid who wanted to be a singer and live in a city, it matched my future goals more. In my mind Barbie was more high fantasy, and Bratz and MyScene represented the modern trend of that time. Now, I just want my dolls back and completely utterly hate that I ever sold them. At the time it was the practical thing to do, and I hope they brought other kids joy, but I still loved them even as I got rid of them. I plan to slowly purchase my favorite dolls from my childhood again (I started with Kaya from American Girl). While I still love Bratz, I plan on getting more Barbie’s (and American Girl dolls) first. As an adult I am once again drawn to Barbie’s higher fantasy world. When I have the space, I hope I can add Bratz too, especially the winter collection!
This is better than any MMA fight ever

True! Myscene was so amazing when I was a kid & that’s coming from a Bratz girlie lol

what makes Bratz so incredibly iconic is the fact that the illustrated depiction of Bratz is just as Iconic.

I love both Barbie and Bratz they are very beautiful dolls but I’m been loving the Bratz dolls more ❤
❤❤❤❤ I'm a Barbie girl! Only due to Bratz coming out when I was in my twenties. I do love Monster High as well.
8:37 This is not to be confused with Girls' Generation, a South Korean musical group. I refer to them as SNSD anyway
I clicked on this video so quick 💕💕😭 bratz gal all the way
Bratz Forever!
I am so sad that I don’t have any of my original bratz..
Honestly the 2 GOATs lol. To challenge Barbie is like someone challenging Pokémon successfully
Both

Oh my god, the barbie at 19:25 is one of the only ones I had. I totally forgot about it until that photo popped up!
