What Hailee did in that film IS remarkable. I have no trouble calling it the finest child actor performance of all-time.
What I think she captured, is that Maddy Ross is the classic merciless avenger. Never mind she's a thirteen year old girl, Tom Chaney is a dead man because he crossed her. More than anyone else in the film, she is to be feared.
She absolutely owns the whole movie. Joel
and Ethan made the story about Matty (hers is the True Grit of the title), and Hailee stepped right up and walked off with it.
Only young actor I would compare her talent to is Jodie Foster. Such self-assurance. Must have been humbling for the male stars.
bro i say this ALL THE TIME. shes acting across from Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon and not only keeping up but stealing plenty of scenes from both.
i was stoked to see her in the Hawkeye show, shes great in that too.. but damn i wanna see her in more character roles like she did in this because she absolutely nailed it. the part where she haggles with the horse guy is hilarious.
this is one of my favorite movies ever and all 3 lead performances are some of my favorite performances ever.
When it comes to remakes, this one was profound.
This was an excellent movie; I love how the way you slowly realize that the title True Grit is actually referring to the little girl. And Matt Damon's character redeems himself with that long shot.
I love the Coen bros True Grit. It has so much heart and depth that the original doesn't have.
The original is a decent John Wayne film, the Coen brother's film is a masterpiece, imo
If you've read the underrated novel, you realize how great this film is in bringing that quality to cinema. The John Wayne version seems like a kid's cartoon by comparison.
Exception film meets exceptional story with exceptional acting that was held up and robbed at the Acadamy Awards. Kudos to Mr. Damon for nailing the vainglorious LaBoeuf. I'd like to know what motivates such fine acting in him.
Great movie. Great performance. It's one of those movies I like to re-watch every year.
One of my FAVORITE movies of all time. Excellent cast, excellent cinaphotograpy, wonderful
dialog, just perfect!
Every Cohen brother's movie is a classic, but I really love this one. The script is amazing and every actor in it was perfect. This was really fun to watch, glad I caught it. I love Matt's take on things.
The book and both movies are terrific. Portis is a wonderful writer. True Grit is his classic.
I absolutely love the speech in this movie! Rare for me to love a period correct speech!
I desperately wish they would make another Rooster Cogburn movie! The True Grit remake was nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece-gritty, powerful, and hands down one of the best modern westerns ever made. Jeff Bridges embodied Rooster Cogburn with legendary gruffness, humor, and heart. Hailee Steinfeld delivered an unforgettable performance as Mattie Ross, holding her own with fierce determination. Matt Damon brought the perfect mix of arrogance and charm as LaBoeuf, and Josh Brolin was absolutely menacing as Tom Chaney. Every performance was pitch-perfect, the dialogue was razor-sharp, and the cinematography captured the raw beauty and brutality of the Old West.
Hollywood, if you're listening-give us more Rooster! We need another chapter in this epic saga!
Honestly, of all the movies that have had remakes, this one, by far, is the best. The Coen Brothers couldn't have picked better actors for their roles.
Never read the book, but watched the John Wayne movie several times growing up. When this version came out, found it to be an exact replica of the original movie with updated cinematography which was nice. The actors did a great job.
I haven't seen either of these movies, but I have read the novel and it is great. Charles Portis was a remarkable writer. Another novel that is known more for the movie is "The Maltese Falcon" which novel is one of the best things I've ever read by anyone.
The Coen version is sooo good- one of my all time favorites.
hey buddy, I just wanted to say that someone who loves reading the book after seeing great movies. I loved your recommendations and pick them up immediately afterwards. you reminded me about the True Grit novel and I didn’t realize the Maltese Falcon started off in magazines. Well done, sir!
Another great movie adapted from a better book ( short story) Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
this is one of my all time favorite films.
I can never get over the absolute solid gold idea to have the main motif of the score be melody of "Leaning On the Everlasting Arms" in a story about a girl who loses her arm to a rattlesnake bite. I'd love to buy whoever came up with that one a nice pancake breakfast.
When I was a kid in the 90s True Grit *was* in our classrooms.
Granted I'm from Arkansas, where it's set.
The casting was perfection in this movie!
It's great how it feels authentic and realistic but clearly has been made with comedy sensibilities. I can believe those people really exist and live and breath in that world, and said the things they said, but it's a heightened form of reality, and there is wit and art and meaning in every little moment.
Child of the fifties here -saw more than my share of westerns -this is easily the best!
Nope, love the film, but, it’s not the best.
Great video! My brother shared a bootleg DVD with me after its release - and I promised him I'd pay for my own copy down the line: I did - and I'm sure he did.
I enjoy listening to Matt Damon's stories. I cannot tell which version I like best - although it was obvious that the Coens hewed closer to the novel.
One thing missing was mention of the score by Carter Burwell. Damon had no interaction with the musical composition - I know. Yet, this is one film - for me - that the score is prominent. I noticed the two hymns, "Leaning On the Everlasting Arms," and, "Hold To His Hand," as the basis for the score. I thought it strange at first - and perhaps cheating - to base a score on two hymns. Still, it worked. I wondered how much of the audience would recognize those themes and associate them with a story about a prudish, wise-beyond-her-years teenager from Western Arkansas on a quest for justice. From every angle, this was a well told tale....
A beautiful movie, as good as the original movie was, this one was so much better with far superior actors, especially that young lady.🕊💖🖖
I feel the Coen brother's is more realistic- less of a 'John Wayne' western, for sure.
True Grit, The Informant, and Team America are Matt Damon's career performances.
Maaatt Daaamon
Ok time for a rewatch
It was great that the Coen Brothers saw fit to give Portis' novel its due by using highly skilled actors in their version instead of the cardboard cutouts the 1969 version used.
I have watched both movies and read the book multiple times. Love them all equally. The Cohen did a fantastic version.
2 words.
Timeless. Classic.
I really wish he would have addressed the lack of spoken contractions in the dialogue.
Never said, "Can't, don't, won't,..". Instead they would say, "Cannot, do not, would not, etc". Most people missed that when watching this movie.
Nobody ever talks about the hidden romantic connection between Steinfeld and Damon's characters which really helped define the two characters and in contrast, Cogburn
what a great remake. fantastic movie.
This was really underrated, kind of like The Alamo with Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. Plus, this was filmed in my home state of NM so I’m a bit more jaded, but the standout goes to Hailee Steinfeld👍
Damon has worked with all the great directors. Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, Scott, Van Sant, Nolan, the Coens, Eastwood etc
You forgot Soderbergh, Gilliam, Miller, Greengrass, Miyazaki & his buddies Kevin Smith & Ben Affleck… but I guess that’s what the “ect” was for.
The world needs a TV series like the way Fargo has been done. Similar to the original, yet different, with the benefit of our addressing our current struggles and issues. I want to spend hours and hours and hours in the world of True Grit. I want to spend time who have the courage to see the truth of their world, and the grit to go about correcting that which is wrong and evil.
This film is easily the better of the two. Hailee Steinfeld is as strong as the other two main characters which certainly wasn’t the case with Kim Darby. Matt Damon is light years ahead of Glen Campbell and Jeff Bridges instills Rooster Cogburn more curmudgeonly humanity, courage and humour than John Wayne could muster. Wayne was awarded best actor because the Academy failed to recognize him in The Searchers, Red River, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance etc. He was excellent in those roles. He just kinda did John Wayne in the older version of True Grit.
Completely agree. John Wayne had developed his on-screen persona early in his career and mostly just read his lines as that persona. I never feel he is experiencing his characters beyond the words on the script. His bearing was so iconic, all he had to do was show up, put on a costume and deliver his lines at no more level than that of a table reading of the script. This is why his range of characters is so severely limited. To prove this, understand that Jeff Bridges would be able to take on any role that Wayne had, but no one could make the case that John Wayne would be capable of pulling off all the roles that Jeff Bridges has portrayed.
@@jeepliving1 Cracking up imagining Wayne going, "I'M THE DUDE. SO THAT'S WHAT YA CALL ME." 🤣
I believe their best film. Thank you sir!
In his safari getup I mistook Damon for Charles Grodin's "Fred Wilson" character from KING KONG.
Imo both movies are great in their own right
True Grit is such and awesome awesome movie. Cou;dn't believe Hailee's performance. She was a super star right away. Carried her own so well.
I wish they would give her better roles, though. She was good in the Hawkeye series, but it's quite below her talent level, in my opinion. She needs some other amazing roles like in True Grit to show off her freaking amazing acting talents.
The book is a real peach 🍑
Great movie
The informant is underrated Steven sidenberg
Very strange audio on this. Feels like I should check the original.
Sacrilege. I saw the original when it came out.
-you do not varnish your opinion.
Lol wouldn't you know Lefty Matt Damon wouldn't have seen the original. Jeff in no way shape or form is the DUKE!!
Yeah Jeff Bridges is an actor and not a preening, racist coward.
Remaking the original True Grit made even less sense than remaking the original Planet of the Apes. Just self-indulgence, nothing more.

Non-responsive.
Matt Damon was the least interesting character in this movie. Why interview him?
Because he sells tickets. Or used to. But I agree with your assessment.
Sorry, but that Tru Grits sucked big time. Bridges looked like he was trying to imitate the Duke.
To be fair, though, grits are never that good.
Nope. The funniest line was the part of the 'switch' scene you didn't show:
"Are you just gonna let him do this?!"
(Takes his sweetass time...)
"Nope."
(Takes his sweetass time...)
"I reckon I ain't."
