So I recently came across one of your recent videos and I was blown away by your talent and generosity!!! He was right to fill the gaps with wood glue, but a handy tip is to mix the glue with sawdust from the timber you are working with until you have a thick paste. Trowel it into the gaps and sand back when dry. It makes it a very tough rigid fill that is a perfect match to your work. I have started collecting sawdust in containers and labelling them so I've always got a wood filler on hand for any timber.
That is a great technique! But in this case, with the two different woods, I would just use clear CA glue (rather than wood glue), and it will sand to a perfect color that will blend magically (and will have a strength that will be unmatched).
@@beatiquivocatisunt that's a good suggestion. What I would have done, and it's just my personal preference for something like this, would be to use a router to route a small (1/8" perhaps) groove along all of the lines. Then, pour a layer of epoxy tinted black (or white) into the groove. Once it hardens, sand it flush, and you have a nice white or black line defining all of the squares. However, I think that with this particular case, that would detract from the "homemade" look of the board, so I'm not sure it would have been a good idea.
