Just like Chinatown our main character I think is in literally every single scene. It works so well in building up the intensity of the character as we never get a break from him.
This film was riveting. It certainly sticks with you and really makes you think. Being empathetic towards someone's condition or state-of-mind does not equal admiring their actions. People need to be able to separate these concepts. This film highlights the way society ignores the mentally ill. The best line in this film wasn't even spoken, it was written in Arthur's book, "The hardest thing about having a mental illness is that people want you to act like you don't." (I'm paraphrasing because I do not remember it perfectly). This is damned near perfect film-making.
Nice review, Lee! Phoenix's performance was fantastic! I think it's interesting how conflicting this movie is - there are moments where you really feel for Arthur, despite knowing what he's going to eventually become. Very interesting look at society and mental illness.
This was like a graphic novel film rather than a comic book film , like the references of the killing joke ,even though he never says "it only takes one bad day" he says it in different phrases along with the failing comedian set up was brilliant ! And the dark night returns nod with the live tv show appearance was well played indeed ! keep up the good work good sir !
Joker is a genuinely startling experience. It’s the sort of film that’s been pitched and promised when most comic book movies are in development but never delivered. It doesn’t reinvent the mass popular sub-genre. Instead, it shows new colours the comic book movie can apply to its canvas.
some scenes in the movie reminded me of my actual life and I cried just thinking about it especially when you try to find that moment of happiness beyond the chaos of life.. someone or something destroys it....
Great film. Arthur is both figuratively and literally knocked down repeatedly. The only bit I wasn't so keen on was a 15 minute sequence when he changes into a sort of detective. It's a very dark film, there is no obvious hero, nobody who is going to come and save the day
I didn't expect much out of this because of my fears was that this was going to be Venom all over again but I watched it and ultimately I ended up loving this film. I got exactly what this movie was going for as far as mental illness, but it didn't bother me even though I am autistic. Joaquin won that Oscar like a champ and so did the music.
Thomas Wayne basically seems to believe in Trickle-down economics. The rich businessmen are the real wealth creators in society and the richer they become the more money might eventually trickle down to the rest of society. It's the kind of belief which inspires big tax cuts for top earners.
Saw it Thursday and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Loved your review brother and glad you did a deep dive on it. Definitely didn’t see the Sophie hallucination coming so when that twist happened, I was floored. So many small details to love about this film, it’s hard to go over every nuance. The weakest part of the film to me was the fact to two detectives trying to question Arthur knew his actual name. Moving forward, everyone now knows the Joker is Arthur Fleck. They even mentioned his actual name before he killed De Niro. So that’s a little strange to me, I wish they would’ve left Arthur Fleck behind permanently when he found his mother’s hospital records. But I see the other side of the coin too and it wasn’t even a big issue for me.
Joker finds out that Thomas Wayne isn’t his father when he steals his mothers file at Arkham. He was adopted so we don’t know who his mother or father really are!
Paging Doctor LOOMIS!!! That could’ve easily been forged by a man as rich & powerful as Thomas Wayne. We don’t know who Arthur’s mom or dad are, that’s the mystery
Joker is definitely one of those movies that has great deal of being disturbing, twisted, but very understandable. It's gonna be one of those that people will see again and again and come out either thinking of it differently or with different theories. And yesterday I went into work and at least 8 people had different ideas of how they saw the film. So that to me says something.
I haven't see it yet, so I can't comment on the Movie but I was distracted by that Danielle Harris photo behind you! Is that new? I don't remember seeing it before!
I’m so glad I went to see this on Monday! Yay I love this spoiler review. This movie made me cry. Joaquin was so awesome!! But, Walk The line will always be his best performance in my opinion. 😀
when Lee mentioned Columbine it got me thinking the 10 thoughts I have on The Joker this may warrant backlash 1 it’s a scathing indictment on society 2 it tackles mental illness and the news media 3 it asks the question on how mass shootings happen 4 it talks about how monsters are created 5 it explores how society looks the other way on the red flags and warning signs 6 a question on unchecked mental illness 7 a question of why the media that focuses on negative stories 8 it asks the question on how a person can go unchecked 9 it asks the question about vigilantism 10 lastly it explores the concept of evil
I just saw the movie this week. But he didn't kill Sophia, it was left up for debate that he could've or couldn't have. But he definitely didn't kill her.
You forgot to mention that Randall gave Author the gun and when he was at work in a children hospital the gun dropped out of his pocket that what got him fired.
I loved this movie. And I love how you manage to understand what the meaning is behind these movies, unlike some other channels who so clearly have things go over their heads. This movie is going split people just like the movie US did earlier this year. You either get it or you don't. If you get it, this is amazing. And I'm not even a superhero/comic book movie fan.
Lee can I just say thank you for this incredible review, this is one of the best reviews of Joker I seen, you've really nailed the tone of the movie & highlighted all the main points about this movie perfectly. As a bipolar/manic depressive OCD/PTSD sufferer I can relate to this film in terms of how the mental health system fails it's sufferers, I live in UK & on medication for life but when I did the counciling & psychology sessions you were limited to how many sessions a patient was allowed which is ridiculous as each case is different some need more help others less. I easily related to Arthurs predicament & how society is failing those with a mental illness, I don't condone his actions or anyone who harms another but I understand why he went down that route because the system failed him, the signs were there but not picked up or acted upon, it was obvious something was going to snap in him it was just a question of when, sadly the current mental health system is flawed because of lack of funding & resources. Huge kudos to Phoenix who made me feel empathy for the character but also terrified, it's hard to balance the two sides of the character but Phoenix pulled it off magnificently, this definitely a 5/5 movie & it's great the film took risks & not deliver another Suicide Squad type of comic book movie. Powerful & thought provoking & one of the best films I've seen this year.
I just seen this movie today and was mesmerized by it. This is truly the best performance by an actor this year. I loved the nods to the gritty 70s style filmmaking. I too thought that Arthur was in a relationship with his neighbor before the big reveal. After the MCU's Avengers Endgame and Spiderman: FFH I'm all Marvelled out right now and I am looking forward to what DC is up to with their upcoming movies although that Birds of Prey trailer doesn't give me much optimism.
Favorite of the year, and I don’t think he killed Sophie because she never did anything bad to him, and he generally went after people that hurt/ignored him
Loved your take on this, Lee! And I'm totally with you, I love that this movie gives us hope of seeing more complex and darker comic book characters/stories. Also that clip of your son in law is too funny ))
Todd Philips Joker isn't necessarily a Scorsese style movie it feels Hitchcockian with a little bit of Kubrick in the mix(recalling A Clockwork Orange)
mesmerising..just watched at cinema, need to digest but initial thoughts are this is not just a comic book film and has similarities to other films such as Taxi Driver, you can also chuck in The Machinist to the mix. For me it's a film that can be re-watched and not be boring at any point which is rare today, hopefully the Marvel Universe dominance at the cinema will make way for more of these reality based stories as not all super heroes/villains necessarily have special powers.
Saw it Saturday and I loved it. It wasn't as dark and violent as I had hoped it would be but that didn't change my opinion of it. Look forward to adding it to my collection. I would give it a 4.5/5.
Arthur didn't kill Sophie, or if he did it wasn't shown. So that part is debatable. But to my understanding, Arthur only killed people who wronged him.
This film and performance is a masterpiece. For those who are complaining about it, have never watched Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy and read Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke or Scott Snyder’s Death of the Family. It’s a movie about The Joker. This is what he does. Calm down. With that said, great review Double D! 👍
Lee, youre the only other person that brought that Columbine comparison up! That was one of the first things that came to mind after seeing that scene. The movie was incredible though. Lived up to the hype for me. *Side note* Watching it a second time, if you look closely at the scene with Arthur and Thomas Wayne in the bathroom- the moment after Thomas punches Arthur and hes leaning on the sink with his nose bleeding, it cuts to him leaning in the same position in his apartment, maybe showing that that scene may have been one of his illusions.
I was one of those who picked up on the relationship with Sophie being in Arthur’s head right away which is really my only gripe with the movie because I felt it was obvious. But I guess not. Great movie absolutely and will probably see it again. Great review lee
Now this is what you call a damn Movie Review! You did such a great job with this. So thorough and deep. Thank you again for what you do. Your love and passion for movies is so obvious. 🖤🎃
I love this character study, I’ve seen this 4 times already and cannot watch this enough, Just the little details, like the fact that the only time the joker actually laughs is at the very end, the high pitched laugh is him pretending to laugh, then there’s his laugh due to his affliction and the very end in the psyche ward I believe is the only time he genuinely is laughing at all, god this movie is brilliant
Agreed! This movie stays with you for multiple reasons, the way it looks, the issues it tackles (even if it is at surface level) and of course Joaquin Phoenix's performance! The way you titled this review is spot on! This apathy is exaggerated since we're watching everything from Arthur's perspective, but that doesn't make it any less significant since it's something we experience everyday. We turn our look away from the things we don't want to see, and the movie tries to ask if maybe that's the problem, if we are culpable in our inaction. Man, what a great film and what an awesome review. Trapped On A Freaking Island for sure!!!
Because of people protesting the movie at my theater I didn't see it. I've decided to avoid that madness because it makes me nervous as to what may happen I have decided to just wait and buy the blu-ray and watch it in private where I can watch it without having a panic attack.
Great review, as a comic book fan I would suggest you read a few so you can see why the statement of "This is a comic book film, buy it's a film" is a bit messed up. The Aurora shooter was NOT dressed as Joker, that was debunked and it had nothing to do with DC or Joker, it was only because that was the big film that weekend. The Sophie scene is left ambiguous, we don't know if he kills her, we see sirens, but is it for that place? To me it sounded like firetrucks. In one origin story of Joker, he had a wife who was killed and he was framed as the Red Hood.
this movie ...sorry Film . was soooooo God damn good. I was blown away . the story was is insane Joaquin was great. loved love loved the scene were he and bruce meet for the very first . chills man chills and the music just set the tone of that scene.felt like two legends meet . oh man. but yes Oscar for Joaquin baby love this movie .
Best superhero movie imo. The performance Phoenix gives is INCREDIBLE. The score was just as amazing, the deaths felt so real too. I love how grounded the movie was, he wasn’t a huge supervillain and he wasn’t trying to be he just happened to start a movement. The slow decent into him becoming more comfortable with his violent behavior and finding out he enjoys it was just engrossing. There’s so many ways to read into this movie and I love it. Sorry for the long comment lol but I just loved this film so so much. the apartment scene was very intense and I thought it was great!
Just seen it & I loved it! Maybe it was overhyped but I still loved it! I really wanted to see this on the big screen, but had to wait for financial & time reasons. October is the by far the busiest & most expensive month for me b/c I love Halloween so much, & it just happened to come out then. December is the second busiest & most expensive month for me. If it were a horror movie I would’ve saved money for it like I did w/Halloween 2018, & after watching it I realize I should’ve anyway, but I can’t go back. I will buy this on blue ray though! It’s fantastic! If I could go back in time I would tell myself, “You’re crazy for waiting!”!
The King of Comedy which Martin Scorsese made and inspired Todd Phillips The Joker also makes me explain and reiterate the subjective nature of comedy as it’s been said and rightly so that comedy is subjective anything can be the fodder for comedy as long as the treatment is funny however just because something is shocking and offensive doesn’t mean it’s worthy of laughter and that’s the abstract truth as comedy is very abstract
Linda Roy I can a little agree to that. Have you seen the movie review by Cody Leach? That was one of his negatives. That the movie was overrated and overhyped.
@@fabianzimmermann5495 I did...it was refreshing to see a reviewer not say this movie/Joachin Phoenix's performance was Oscar worthy. While it is good, they're not great. Maybe another viewing will change my mind, idk.
I just am still so in awe of how great it is and how much I love this film. I don't know they they can even come close or try to top this in the sequel that comes out in 2024. It's hard to imagine it being better than this@@DrumdumsOfficial
See I won’t know that he did kill Sophie. They sort of leave it open to interpretation. I’m not one of those that buys into the entire film is in his head though
the only criticism i have is I found some of the screenplay to be derivative of the Martin Scorsese films it was influenced by. particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. i can't say masterpiece yet, but for what it wants to do, it works as a villain origin story. plus this movie made me understand why Arthur became the Joker
@@DrumdumsOfficial that's fair. its just there were some obvious things I saw that I thought the screenplay didn't have enough originality to separate it from those two Scorsese films I mentioned. the talk show scene is very similar to The King of Comedy but done a little differently.
Mike I have to ask you this question could possibly pertain to other people to what was the last shit crappy horror movie you went and saw, that actually turned into a really good one and you truly enjoyed the movie. I ask you this question because how everything people are treating the joker they think it's going to be a crappy movie they see it and they end up loving it
The movie was awesome. I liked the hell out of it. Spoilers: The subway scene was one of my favorites. It also a huge surprise and what happened in it, was very unexpected. What I also liked was the Soundtrack. When I was paying attention to it, it sounded amazing. And I could totally see, how someone could go crazy like that, with these things happening. All the stuff with Thomas Wayne, his mother and neighbor. When he went into the neighbors apartment and when she was shocked to see him, I realized, he was only imagining it, that they were dating. And the fact, that she mentioned, that her daughter is in the other room sleeping, makes me believe, that he maybe killed the daughter as well. And this death scene is very powerful, because all we get, is dramatic music playing and Phoenix walking to his own apartment. We never see it, but we know, that she is dead. There are a lot of camera shots, that are made very good, like the one, where he climbs into the fridge. I loved the scene with the small guy. You‘re not entirely sure, if he will let him go, after the guys walks pass Phoenix, you think he’s save and then the guy can‘t reach the chain, that looks the door and you suddenly are afraid again. There really is a lot to talk about in this movie.
With your daughter. Good to see, but like sad dramas, probably wont watch again... kinda like the movie The Room. Once you know the story, it's kinda like interesting to digest but not for 2nd & 3rds.
Phillips made joker with a small gun more terrifying than Thanos with unlimited power

The best thing about Joker is that it doesn't set in the DCEU it's set in a alternate world.

when Lee mentioned Columbine it got me thinking the 10 thoughts I have on The Joker this may warrant backlash
1 it’s a scathing indictment on society
2 it tackles mental illness and the news media
3 it asks the question on how mass shootings happen
4 it talks about how monsters are created
5 it explores how society looks the other way on the red flags and warning signs
6 a question on unchecked mental illness
7 a question of why the media that focuses on negative stories
8 it asks the question on how a person can go unchecked
9 it asks the question about vigilantism
10 lastly it explores the concept of evil

A clown in a cancer ward? So basically, it’s “Patch Adams- Part 2”. Well minus the late, great Robin Williams. RIP
I just going to make this short and sweet. Joker was a FUCKING 5 STAR MASTERPIECE.
I give this movie a perfect 10
Are you sure he killed Sophie? I didn't see anything that confirmed that he killed Sophie and I really hope he didn't kill the little girl
I would say my af bro that the Colorado shooter was not dressed in joker attire even his hair was not of joker..
this movie ...sorry Film . was soooooo God damn good. I was blown away . the story was is insane Joaquin was great. loved love loved the scene were he and bruce meet for the very first . chills man chills and the music just set the tone of that scene.felt like two legends meet . oh man. but yes Oscar for Joaquin baby love this movie .
Also did he kill Sophie? The questions this movie leaves you asking are mind blowing
Tmunch83 I believe he did. Dammit. Now you have me questioning myself!
Comicbook movie*
Joker ain't no superhero.
Vikram Prasanna my bad didn’t even notice I said that!
I feel like the media is taking this movie way to seriously
Ikr? I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but while It's good, it's not great. Way, way overrated and overhyped.
Linda Roy
I can a little agree to that.
Maybe another viewing will change my mind, idk.
i felt at the theater as i do today after watching it, it's one of the greatest movies in my opinion. It's easily top 10 for me
Yeah it's amazing.
Ian Bulaclac It definitely had a Scorsese feel to it, but in no way did I feel that was a bad thing. It only added to the flavor.
@@DrumdumsOfficial that's fair. its just there were some obvious things I saw that I thought the screenplay didn't have enough originality to separate it from those two Scorsese films I mentioned. the talk show scene is very similar to The King of Comedy but done a little differently.
I Loved This Movie! Awesome Review!
Seeing it on Friday
I doubt joker killed sophie
Mike I have to ask you this question could possibly pertain to other people to what was the last shit crappy horror movie you went and saw, that actually turned into a really good one and you truly enjoyed the movie. I ask you this question because how everything people are treating the joker they think it's going to be a crappy movie they see it and they end up loving it
Joaquin Phoenix will definitely win the Oscar for Best Actor.
Trapped on an Island went to see it in cinema 6 times
The movie was awesome. I liked the hell out of it.
Spoilers:
The subway scene was one of my favorites.
There really is a lot to talk about in this movie.
my top 5 comic book movies
1. dark knight
2. joker
3. infinity war
4. dark knight rises
5. civil war
@drumdums Rob Zombies Halloween tried to show the making of a killer and was not as well received as this origin of evil...thoughts?
Aaron White He failed in that regard. With Myers you have to show a lot of restraint.
Only problem he's part of the DCU not MCU lol... haven't got to see this movie yet...thanks Dumdrum
barry coote I never said he was part of the MCU. I was simply comparing this movie two movies from the MCU.
British humour, just having a laugh
He killed sophie? Or sofie or whatever? I can’t remember he did that
Off screen but it's open to interpretation
Its ambiguous, she disappears from the movie though.
MCU is the McDonalds of cinema. Joker is a filet mignon.
Masterpiece 10 out of 10
With your daughter. Good to see, but like sad dramas, probably wont watch again... kinda like the movie The Room. Once you know the story, it's kinda like interesting to digest but not for 2nd & 3rds.
I'm going to give it another watch tonight Laura. Still can't get it out of my head.
Very good but depressing movie...Oscar-worthy performance by Joaquin👍
I love joker movie it was amazing movie
