I love Colonial Williamsburg and spoon bread! Never heard of it until we went to Williamsburg! It's delicious! The Lodge used to serve it every morning at their breakfast buffet.

Was literally trying to recreate what that restaurant in Williamsburg served when I was a kid. So happy I found this vid.

Can't wait to try this. I visit Colonial Williamsburg yearly for the past 5 years and love it there. I am in NYC so I only get down there once a year. Thank you for sharing this!

spoonbread is a southern/North Carolina dish! I grew up on this. We used to make this every Friday night as a side with fish.

Thank you for sharing your cooking skills. This recipe makes the best spoon bread ever. I made it two different times; each time it's perfect. I wish I could attach a picture. You're the greatest.

I bought a packaged mix of spoon bread in Colonial Williamsburg but it wasn't nearly as good as they serve in the taverns. Thanks for the authentic recipe! Mmm! Looks delish!

I am a Virginia gal & grew up on Spoon Bread. My Mama made it all the time, often served with fried- fresh caught fish in place of corn bread.

We ate there,,such a neat experience,, for me it was humbling it was like getting back to your roots the way your ancestors ate (at least mine being from upstate and generations of my family being upstate NY and PA farmers)

After the good recipe, technique, and peaceful conversations between you and your husband, I floe like I went to visit a friend and she taught me how to make spoon bread. The second time watching I realized your humility is there too….the filming is all the food, not the cook!

Am from Virginia and was raised on spoonbread. It was the weeknight go to once or twice a week. It was like potatoes or rice or cornbread. Haven't had it in years though.

I am going to have to give this a try. Growing up here in Virginia I had heard about spoon bread all my life but I had never eaten any. Several years ago I was grocery shopping and I ran across packaged spoon bread mix so I decided to give it a try. I followed package directions and put it in the oven to back. When it came out it was all golden brown and looked delicious. I spooned me out a big spoon full onto a saucer and it looked like clabbered baked custard. There was this yellow liquid running out of it and it was just nasty looking. But being the brave soul that I am I decided to taste it anyway, so I did. That was the second mistake, the first was buying it. The consistency was that of custard but the taste was something that I can't even describe, it was disgusting to say the very least. I tossed it all in the trash and I've never tried spoon bread since. =)

The first time I ever had this was also at Christiana Campbells' Tavern, but it was baked and served in Ramekins. My wife raved about it. For me it was very good, but not great. I think it was because my wife had built my expectations too high. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I may give making it a try.

I grew up in Virginia, Richmond to be exact. When I was a kid, in the late 50's, 60's, we had spoonbread fairly often as a side dish, especially with fish. I believe it is primarily a Southern/Virginia, North Carolina dish. I've lived in many places and traveled quite a bit and I don't recall seeing it outside of that region. It really is kind of like a cornbread soufflé and absolutely delicious. One of my fondest memories from childhood are of my mom's fish and spoonbread dinners.

I just LOVED your spoon bread recipe, tried it this morning! My family gobbled it up in minutes, literally! I've tried several of your recipes for a year now, all of them were success! Your Amish macaroni salad and sausage gravy have become staple meals at my home, and this spoon bread will be added too! Thank you so much for such wonderful recipes!

Your recipe is spot on….some vids add corn, cheese, peppers, etc BUT this would be considered authentic by me! Others w added stuff is simply corn pudding there IS a DIFF people! Use this one…. I know this vid is a bit older but still enjoyable! Thank you….side note: I am surprised your eggs didn’t start cooking…generally they needed to be “tempered” in…that’s all, for novice cooks, be careful, gotta be quick or just temper! Thanks again…”butter your pans”! Lol

you can drain a can of whole kernel corn then fold it in to the mix before baking to use as a side with beef stew.

Haven't made Yorkshire pudding in an age. Probably will have to wait until after the turn of the New Year. Not planning a roast beef dinner anytime soon, but I will put it on the list. They are really simple. Especially when you make the batter in the blender!

This looked delicious! I think you and Rick would love the channel Townsends, they specialise in 18th century cooking. They also have videos with information about the revolutionary war told from soldiers diaries and a heap of other interesting things. There's even recipes for small beers which aren't really fermented like traditional beer, maybe Rick would like to give them a try.

Sooon bred is the best! It's not "colonial", it's a southern thing. It is served as a side dish rather than as a desert, with only butter on top of it. No sugar in the batter and no sweet stuff on top of it. Most batters are very similar and fantastic. Very surprised to see it baked in a shallow pan. Normally it's baked in a deep bowl so you can plunge that spoon all the way in. Either way it's wonderful. And southern. Craving some now. Haha!
