Tammy, I can’t express to you how much I value and enjoy your videos. I live alone and your videos help get me thru the long evenings and aloneness. Your sweet southern accent and the way you talk is wonderful! I don’t cook but I love watching you cook up some yummy dishes and love seeing you and hearing you. It feels like I’m in the kitchen with a friend and not so stinkin alone. God bless you!!!!
Bless your heart, i feel the same way. I was a good cook according to family and friends. I was always in the kitchen cooking up something tasty and i shared it with whoever dropped by or I'd take a plate or two to someone disabled, ect.. now I'm disabled and mostly bedridden so i enjoy watching others cook also.
Big hugs to you ladies 🥰 I'm disabled and most times bedridden from an autoimmune disease w/pain. Understand about night time loneliness as hubs goes to bed early and I sleep in another room so I don't disturb him with insomnia and restlessness. I do cook, tho' in a wheelchair and looking for new adventures with foods I'd never tried, so here I am. It's like a sweet happy kitchen when I watch these videos. Sending love and prayers 🙏🏼❤🕊
My mother used to make this on Saturday morning and she’d served it with butter and syrup... it’s like a puff pancake and cornbread mixed together! Delicious! Thank for sharing!
I am definitely going to try this - I have chickens, ducks and turkeys - going to try it with my duck eggs. The duck eggs make your dishes so rich. Thank you for this recipe. Blessings to everyone!
I have a chicken egg sensitivity so eat duck eggs instead. The are super decadent. The albumin is alkaline which is really good for raising the PH in your blood. (In line with asparagus and artichokes.) They're really nice to bake with. Quiche are silky and they make your cakes raise higher. So I can only imagine how nice this spoon bread would be. I have cornmeal so I will definitely try this recipe.
Brings back memories …my mom made this and it was a real treat. My mother in law also loved it. They always got spoon bread with roast beef at a cafeteria that was popular back then. I have made it a good bit but been a long time. Might have to splurge and make it, with a roast beef meal. Don’t hesitate to add butter to your hot serving.
My Granny made corn cakes, corn bread, cracklin' bread, biscuits and my favorite Spoon bread! It was so good with fish and collard greens. The absolutely best! Thanks for bringing spoon bread back to the table. ❤
I used to make this at breakfast, Tammy. We used to blob on more butter. My kids loved it with jelly, too. I made bacon or sausages on the side. Bacon fat is fabulous in spoon bread! Thanks for making it today. It brings back good memories. 😊❤
This looks exactly like the way my grandmother used to make her spoon bread. I have searched everywhere for a recipe that comes close to hers, and I think I just found it! Thank you so much!
Oh my goodness it looks so spongy and pretty. I love everything you cook and I brought home leftover beans so I'm going to make this for sure! Merry Christmas!
I love you doing recipes from the 1920s! Our grandparents, parents, and older relatives had to make do with want they had on the farm or from small-town mom&pop stores. However, that means the table was full of some wonderful dishes for their loved ones!! Yes, I have tasted spoonbread from my grandmothers!
I grew up in southern VA (70 now) and spoon bread was everywhere....even the local cafeterias in Roanoke and Greensboro and Charlotte...dripping with butter it is hands down my favorite "bread". There are easy recipes where you don't have to whip egg whites and it is just a tad grainier but they are good as well....just a more-buttery cornbread!!!! I also had it down at my Atlanta families, so kinda strange you never had it....wonder why? I do love it! Even the recipes in the old checkerboard Better Homes and Garden books are almost identical to this one. They show both the whipped egg white version and the "quicker", no-beat version. Either one is great to me!
There was a tea room here in Tulsa, called The Garden well known for so many delicious dishes. To name a few a plantation chicken on top of spoon bread, herbed toasts and chicken broth that was served with every lunch, a beautiful fruit plate served with fancy cut tomatoes chicken and tuna salad. So pretty and delicious. The plantation chicken was a creamed chicken on top of spoon bread. So delicious and definitely a southern recipe. It was such a fun place.
The Scoop hello Tulsa! Another here from Tulsa!! Thank you for sharing about the Garden tea room,I had never heard of it! But I love to hear & find these tidbits!!
Ty Tammy for this video I haven't had this since I was probably 6 yrs old. My great granny made it all the time on her wooding stove. God bless our family's that are in beaven👼👼🙏🙏

I love these old recipes. This is how frugal people cooked during those depression years. You did with what ya had. Thank you so much for sharin this recipe.

We LOVE spoonbread here in Virginia. So good with fish and any type of greens - kale, collards, turnip, mustard, dandelion. Ok! Officially hungry now. 😋
When I was in school, the cooks made spoon bread, and I was crazy about it. It took me years to find out what it was, and get a recipe in a very old cook book. You are right, Tammy, there is nothing else like it. Thanks for sharing, and I encourage everyone to try it.
I had to watch this video, I have .my Mama's old recipes & one says Spoon Bread. I have a vague memory of trying to make it but messed it up. Yours looks beautiful! My dad was from Louisiana so mom always tried new stuff he'd like.
Tammy, in early September each year, in Berea, KY, there is a wonderful small town Spoonbread Festival. There are all kinds of spoonbreads available to try and many are in competition for judging and awards. Lots of other attractions are also part of the day. You and Chris would love it!

It is delicious! I miss my old recipe books. I lost everything again for the second time this past year and that's one of the things I miss the most. We just don't cook like that anymore.
I've been cooking for over 30 years and thought I knew how to cook. Well, now I know how!! Very educational and thanks for taking the time for these videos. You're the BEST!❤👍
Our family first had spoon bread in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania while on vacation. We all loved it. It was delicious. Thank you so much Tammy for showing how to make spoon bread
This makes my mouth water! I’m gonna have to make this soon! I remember eating this at Daniel Boone Inn in NC when I was a kid and I LOVED it! Thank you for this video!
I'm from Georgia but hub is from Virginia. I learned how to make Spoonbread from his grandmother's recipe. If you've never tried this and love cornbread...you are in for a treat!😋

I am 60 years old with grandkids of my own and still enjoy it!
Okay, I just watched this video, and now Im going to watch it one more time. I cant even believe how delicious this looks, Im sure you could sweeten it up just slightly as well as the savory version. Definitely never seen this recipe or tried it by anyone else either. IM OUT OF CORN MEAL TILL TUESDAY LOL. Love ya, God bless, Shirley.
I'm going to try this. My husband can't eat cornbread since his stroke, it's too dry, so this may be perfect. I'll cut the recipe and only make 1/3 and use 2 souffle dishes.
My mom was born in 1914. In all my years of her cooking she never mentioned spoon bread or made it. I'm surprised she didn't because her mom passed away when her baby sister was only 6 weeks old. Wonderful!
I found a copy of that book on eBay. You could tell by the smell of the book; it had been kept in a cedar chest. I love it!
Is there another one? I didn't pull one up.
I'm not sure. I just searched the book on Google and it sent me to ebay.
