Recently I saw belts for CMM machines. Similar to GT2 concept but belt contains thin strip of stainless steel so is unstreachable. Don't know what the prices are for it. You can check since your idea is nice.

That's not a bad idea, I ended up getting glass scales, but if I had to cut the cost significantly, I would probably do that route to be honest

Interesting... I'm in a similar situation looking for a DRO for a lathe.
The big issue is choosing and buying the scales particularly for an electronics hobbyist who could make up their own controller board.
Unfortunately for something like this once you factor in the cost of the Pi, the touch screen and the controller... The cheap dro controller displays from bangood and aliexpress start looking quite economical. Plus they're a single unit and a little more robust for a workshop environment. They also don't run the risk of a forced android update killing off your DRO. Google has become quite insidious in that fashion.
It would be interesting to see the full hardware setup you have for this.

So I have a used Nexus 9, disabled all updates and basically it's been running great, I didn't go with the pi because of the price of a tablet. I did buy cheap glass scales, overall spent the same price as Ali express but didn't have a language gap and didn't have any issues. One thing to mention, the dro does cut off after being connected for 24 hrs, so you do have to turn the power off the touch DRO and reconnect the blue tooth, but it takes 2 seconds to do it, I'm happy overall

Hi, would you belive that the Raspberry 4 would make any difference in performance? this seems to work very well!! thanks a lot!!!

So yes, the Raspberry Pi 4 should work significantly better with getting the App store install portion of the build. I unfortunately do not have a Pi 4 to do the test, but you would have to select Pi 4 from the drop down in the LineageOS site. There I would still do Android 10 if you want to use the 7" screen, the newer version of android 11 might not support the Pi screen in that version. So long and short, yes, but looking at the price of a Pi vs a HTC Nexus 7 or 9 on ebay, those are cheaper options if money was a decision factor there.

Wouldn't a rotary encoder be susceptible to backlash of the lead screws? Where a traditional linear scale eliminates that problem by not being tied to the screws.

You could have the rotary encoder not tied to a lead screw, but more like a fancy wheel running along ur lathe.. (like the new chop saw measuring device I've seen ads for) but yes I was just using a rotary encoder to test it out, I ended up installing glass scales
