London's Bonnie and Clyde

  • Although London was famous for its ‘Blitz Spirit’ during the Second World War, there were still plenty of criminals lurking amongst the city’s streets.
One of the most notorious criminal cases to occur during that era was the killing of George Heath (the so called ‘Cleft Chin Murder’), which was committed in the autumn of 1944 by U.S Private, Karl Hulten and 18 year old Elizabeth Jones: London’s very own Bonnie and Clyde.
In this true crime video, I’ll be recounting their murderous tale…
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    01:10 This Awful War
    03:36 A Fateful Meeting
    07:53 Their Spree Begins
11:37 The Murder of George Heath
    15:11 The Arrests
    16:39 The Trial
    20:54 Outro
I’d be interested to hear your own thoughts on London’s Bonnie and Clyde.
Was it a case you were familiar with? Do you think the sentences passed were justified? And would you like to see me cover more of London’s true crime stories? Please be sure to let me known in the comments!

In the clip of a US training film, we saw two US soldiers, the second who shook his head in disgust at the first's behaviour was none other than Burgess Meredith, Rocky Balboa's trainer, who was also the Penguin in the TV Batman series.

Brilliant as always Rob. One thing I really appreciate is when you mention locations, there's often a shot of said location and many a time it's clear that it's *your* shot of the location, meaning you actually travel there as part of the work that goes into these wonderful videos.
That's the level of dedication I love about you, Rob. That's why I subscribed.

Excellent as always Rob. I'd never heard of this case before. What a thoroughly nasty, and evil couple. A big thumbs up for all the hard work, and Sherlockian sleuthing that you must have put in, not only for the info, but the appropriate video clips too. Any subject you want to cover in future videos would be perfect.

An excellent video Rob. I did not know the names of these vile people, but have seen the film 'The Good Time Girl' with Jean Kent, without realising it was based on a true event. Unfortunately, the London Blitz and the blackout provided a cover for a number of murderers, as a dead body did not arouse the same level of suspicion or investigation as we see today. I think that Elizabeth got off very lightly, considering the murder of George and the fact that she was wearing Violet's clothes and the victim had been left for dead. As usual, our beloved gutter press were willing to pay Elizabeth for her story...shame on them. Rob, I'll have to stop watching your video's or I'll have none left for Christmas.

I'm late, but I enjoyed your narration even if the subject matter was not pleasant. I was embarrassed that Carl was an American but relieved that he was born a Swede. Thanks Rob, another wonderfully interesting upload. I always appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into your vlog. My parents were of that wartime generation and both had some tales to tell about their wartime experiences. Sadly crime was rife during the war, not all of it purely related to the black market. Much criminal activity occurred at night taking advantage of the cloak afforded by the strictly enforced blackout.

I certainly did find it interesting. Amazing photo of the nurse that had been attacked on the bike, sitting in the car they then stole and killed the driver of. What a horrid pair and such atmospheric use of B&W clips to tell the story. It was a break from Pub search videos in order to lengthen the delights of you companionable videos! More I say!🙂 Thanks!

Excellent. Have you thought of compiling all of these stories into a book?

Thanks so much 😊 I’ve written quite a few crime articles for a certain trade magazine over the years and they would make a good book- although to be honest it’s easier to share them here! Thanks and stay well

I have read about this horrible case. The woman was remarkably fortunate to be reprieved. Poor victims, murdered by two immature fools.

Wasn't this story not the inspiration for the Kiether Sutherland film Chicago Joe and the Showgirl?

Yes, there are some clips/screenshots of the film in the video.

They were incredibly stupid ,I remember the case,I was just a little girl then but I remember my parents talking about it.They both were of the opinion that they both should have hung ,she was just as guilty as he was.

Not at all " Bonnie & Clyde " . Neither of them gave evidence , falsely or otherwise , against one another . They each tried to protect the other . The couple featured in this episode were just the opposite , trying to save themselves at the expense of the other .
