Thank you again as I have to use this often. It works! Day 1 on the new resentment I have bubbling inside me. It feels awful and I can't wait to be rid of it. After all, I put myself in this situation.
"God, please help me to be free of anger and to see that the world and its people have dominated me. Show me that the wrongdoing of others, fancied or real, has the power to actually kill me. Help me to master my resentments by understanding that the people who wrong me were perhaps spiritually sick. Please help me to show those I resent the same tolerance, pity, and patience that I would cheerfully grant a sick friend. Help me to see that this is a sick man (or woman). Father, please show me how I can be helpful to him (or her) and save me from being angry. Lord, help me to avoid retaliation or argument. I know I can’t be helpful to all people but, at least, show me how to take a kindly and tolerant view of each and every one. Thy will be done. Dear God, I have a resentment towards a person that I want to be free of so I am asking you to give this person everything I want for myself. Help me to feel compassionate, understanding, and love for this person. I pray that they will receive everything that they need. Thank you, God, for your help and strength with this resentment. Amen." -Big Book of AA, p. 552
I have always struggled with anger , resentments, and unforgiveness. I have been working on it with a therapist and 12 step sponsor, and it is getting better. I was told that resentments only hurt you, not the wrongdoers. I had to write down my resentments and how they affected me to see the damage to motivate me to let go. I also had to write down my part in the resentments so I could see where i was in the wrong, make amends, change behaviors, build my character and reconcile relationships if appropriate. Obviously there are some situations you don't play a part like if you were abused. I really get into psychology and human behavior so I like to understand why people act how they do for example mental illness. It helps to have compassion on them and to wish them well. This is NOT justifying or condoning it just helps to understand, have compassion, and wish them well. Its also not good to get revenge, not only because of consequence but they will get their karma and there will be justice. If it motivates them to change and make anends be happy for them.
This prayer is half right. It focuses on the wrong doing of "others" as if the person praying has played no part. Step 4 also says "Putting out of our minds the wrongs others had done, we resolutely looked for our own mistakes. Where had we been selfish, dishonest, self-seeking and frightened?...Where were we to blame?...When we saw our faults, we listed them ..we admitted our wrongs honestly and were willing to set matters straight.". In step 4, forgiveness and mercy toward others is a big part, but when it comes to inventory, I see a bigger pointer pointing at me.
my father is literally hearing this prayer for the first time after he destroyed my room and threatened to kick me about because I said he was a sick man easier to just leave the sick folks alone no need to be right or preach to them just be free of them.
Just want you to know I listen to this every morning and it’s very helpful to me
This was just what I needed, thank you, and praise be to God in the Highest.
