  • Heat coagulation Test is routinely used to screen for proteinuria in pregnancy. Small quantities of albumin are normally filtered at the glomerulus and reabsorbed by the proximal tubule. The protein that escapes reabsorption does not exceed 150 mg/24 hr so that proteinuria in excess of this amount is regarded as pathologic.
    Test Methods:
    Qualitative tests
    Heat coagulation test
    Hellers nitric acid test
    Sulphosalicylic acid test
    Quantitative test
    Esbach’s albuminometre test
    Other tests
    Protein reagent strip test
    Biuret test
    Urine protein electrophoresis
    Heat coagulation Test:
Advantage - cheap test which does not require technical expertise
Disadvantage - specific type of proteinuria cannot be judged
