    People for some reason: "If you don't like the new Little Mermaid movie, you're racist!"
    Guy who literally is black: "Yeah I don't like this movie, and I don't see why others do."
    People: >:0

      Of course not every black person is going to like the movie but let's not pretend the thousands of people that already hated it because she wasn't white were ever going to have a change of heart.
      Now that it's out they can find other excuses instead of just coming out and saying they didn't like seeing a black Ariel. Including "see this black person didn't like it either so I'm not racist"

    In Mulan , The Little Mermaid , Pinnochio and Peter Pan in the Remakes version
    The protagonist is portrayed for being too OP
    Its like eliminating the element of struggle which crucial for the hero of the story development and makes the audience even more sympathetic with their development ,
    You Can't make a good story with a Hero that have no flaw

    Lets see if Disney REALLY commits to the new Black Ariel and change the doll line up permanently. Odds are they sell her toys for this year at most and then go back to Red head ariel to show how shallow they were about pandering to the black audiences for a year.

    Personally, my problem is that the crew behind the remake don't understand the source material (and probably even hate it, considering they went out of their way to talk about how their new version is an improvement). Ariel saving herself instead of Eric nullifies the point of Triton going "oh, yes, you're right, not all humans suck". Triton wasn't scary at all (I watched Vicky Christina Barcelona and trust me, this man CAN be scary and intimidating), and Ursula felt watered down as hell. Making humans hate merpeople sort of proves Triton's point when he should be a paranoid widower. Also, they made original characters from the sisters, which begs the question as to why they couldn't make an original character for Halle Bailey. The dresses sucked and I'm not buying the historical accuracy excuse cuz a white prince being the adoptive child to a black queen would've been illegitimate because he doesn't look like her. Plus, historical accuracy isn't something people watch disney movies for. What's even more disappointing is that they could have either made a spin off about Sebastian's life in Trinidad and give him a mermaid bestie or make a new animated movie and have Halle voice and sing for the main character (because a live action movie would imply that they'd have had to pay her royalties, while a cartoon would not have had that problem).
    Basically, they do not care. I'll just wait for Wish because (in my opinion) the people behind it have way more love and affection for their movie.

      Though it can be made an counter argument that hollywood and disney created these racist. it pretty much started with ghostbusters 2016 where the makers of the movie constantly blaimed people for being sexist, even though this was not the problem. The use of the "sexist/racist" card was used so often to defend woke movies that some people now said "fuck it, you want me to be a racist, I'll be a racist" or at least associating "diversity" with woke, even in cases where it's actualy not. Honestly, you can blaim big studios and the loud mouths on platforms like twitter that make the whole lgbtq community or the left leaning side look bad, for years of actual progress beng destroyed and the increase in actual racist and facists. Some people took it way too far and ruined it for people they claimed to protext.

      Look there are racists out there, not many, but some. And Disney depends on them to smear all the film's detractors as racist. It is clear in their marketing they plan for it. They know taking a character established by them for 30+ years as a pale skinned red head and deciding to recast her as brown skinned and reddish browned haired character will get pushback simply because they radically altered her appearance for identity politics reasons. But they depend on authentic racists comments to be sprinkled into that pushback and that is what is focused on. And they blame the audience for everything a few do. And they hope the outrage marketing strategy will prop up what is an inferior retread. Not working this time. They know the game going in and yet they cast what is an admittedly talented singer that does not look like the character and use her as a lightning rod. Hallee Bailey actually deserved a Disney princess of her own that she could originate and make her own. And she doesn't deserve the S-storm Disney depended on creating in casting her in this.

    • @Crawlingdreams418
      @Crawlingdreams418 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the problem is that disney is making it look like EVERYONE who hated it was a racist. Meanwhile, disney never made the same responses to the people who hated the Mulan live action remake. Generally, if you were to call the latter a bad movie, nobody would jump on you and call you a bigot bc most people agree it sucked. They realized that their remakes were underperforming, which is why they decided to use her as a human shield.

  • @0deadx21
    @0deadx21 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I did say that letting Ariel do everything and the other characters do nothing does not make Ariel come across sympathetic and relatable. Imagine pulling that crap with Cinderella's character. What a disaster that would have been.
    The remakes of _Cinderella_ , _The Jungle Book_ and _Pete's Dragon_ are better than the original movies, and funny enough were not trying to be remakes in the first place, just their own standalone adaptations of the source material. We need movies like that, not movies like post-2019.

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still don't understand....the only big change is only the climax scene that Ariel pulls around the steering wheel and it kills Ursula. The released illustrated book depicts it wrong, because she is not navigating it like a professional, but rather pulling it only around- But in the remaining movie, Ariel is behaving like a genuine sweet girl and there's more the focus on doing it together. The changes are to keep more focus on Ariel and Eric instead of the animals, similarly as in Cinderella - and even here there were changes, just like when in Cinderella the mother's dress is not improved by the mice...for example. Or how they try to rescue her when she's locked up. The animal rescue in The Little Mermaid is also a bit changed...but it's still together, but Ariel is more involved. Between damsel in distress and girlboss...there are so many shades between----

    • @0deadx21
      @0deadx21 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@felicity1877 In the animated Cinderella movie, it's clear they had no idea what to do with the human characters, so half the movie was pointless animal filler to fill out the run time. The mice had no business having so much screen time, so the remake rightfully fixed that instead of keeping it. The focus was rightfully kept on Cinderella, her stepfamily, and the prince.
      Eric being the one to stop Ursula instead of anyone else was a crucial step, as it's how Triton learns to trust humans and Ariel's judgement, and gives Eric a chance to save her for once. Giving the climax win to Ariel negates so much of this, maybe everything. Eric is basically reduced to being a glorified prize for Ariel. Why the hell was Ursula ignoring Ariel to go after Eric anyway? It still wasn't Eric's fault her eels got killed, it was Ariel again.

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@0deadx21 I understand your point and I'm so sick of the subverted damsel in distress trope and "trophy boy" thing. Yet, I still think it was a nice touch for the relationship between Ariel and Triton - such like Triton sacrificed himself for his daughter, and then so Ariel is avenging and rescuing her father through the final defeat of Ursula. There's always so much room for interpretation. The old version is not called wrong and it won't be replaced. Don't get me wrong, but I think it's just an updated way to understand how modern Ariel actually is and always had been. In comparison to other previous Disney princesses, she has so much more to do to fight for her dreams and goals and participate in villian defeat...and now after so many other strong Disney heroines - such like Mulan, Merida etc....twists in live action remakes might be allowed. Still better than Maleficent kissing Aurora awake...

    • @0deadx21
      @0deadx21 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@felicity1877 The animated Ariel was also avenging her father, so the only difference is Triton now having little to no reason to like Eric. The climax wasn't improved, it was ruined.

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@0deadx21I have never interpreted the movie as you do. In my opinion, yet, it's not so much necessary that Eric needs to "earn Ariel", but rather the focus in the ending was that Triton realized that he loves his daughter so much and fulfills her wishes and so he lets her go. What you say is nothing directly stated, but rather an interpretation, and it makes sense and is lovely. I've read similar thoughts also in some comments. But in the Little Mermaid Broadway musical, Ariel also defeated Ursula directly. They just took it from there - it has been for years on stage - and mixed it up with the cinematography of the old movie. Well, perhaps then they should have rather thought of more creativity than just such a flip...

      @@madamefluffy4788 To be fair, the original Little Mermaid's story wasnt the most logical. Then again, this had a traditional fairy tale narrative, focusing more on the simplicity and emotions than it is on the logic (like Snow White). But, while Snow White in the original animated film was a simple wide eyed (and 1 dimentional) dreamer, which fits with its simple narrative, Ariel in the original animated film felt more real but she was doing all sorts of nonsensical and illogical stuff in her story (like what you'd expect in a traditional fairy tale narrative) thus creating a bunch of misguided comments like Ariel being a 1 dimentional character because she just wants a man (like Snow White), Ariel being a whiney brat, Ariel being a boy obsessed stalker, Ariel being an idiot, Ariel being spoiled, ungrateful, and selfish, Ariel being a stupid jerk, ect. It wasn't until later Disney films like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen where they're based on fairytales but they have a modern edge because unlike the Little Mermaid, logic takes the front row and plays a bigger role in the narrative while being simple but also deep and complex.

    What you say is true but when you said we should have original stories and characters instead of rewriting well-established characters and stories that’s true. But, it’s different for superhero franchises such as Marvel and DC because they have lots of characters of color who are either yet to be adapted outside the comics or have not been seen outside the comics for a while now. Examples are Luke Cage (a black hero with the power of invulnerability), Jubilee (a Chinese hero who has the power to make fireworks, say what you want, she may be an annoying, bratty teen but she’s kind of a cute kid), Sam Alexander (a part Hispanic teen who became a nova and HE’S SO PRECOCIOUS), Red Locust (a Hispanic Pym hero who has potential, I want to see her in the MCU as Hope Van Dyne’s apprentice), the Agents of Atlas (a team of super cool Asian superheroes, they have lots of potential to lead epic stories. And one of the members, I am actually worried about, Crescent, she’s one of the few child supes in Marvel and children characters are very hard to write, so, she could be annoying as all heck when adapted outside the comics, anyway, Marvel can go two routes with her, the Moongirl route where they age her up to a teenager (that would make for interesting stories) or keep her a little kid, I just hope they write her where she’s not annoying), Chimera (I can’t speak for her yet because she’s Marvel’s newest hero, she’s only been around since September and while she’s Hispanic and her powers are basically the Human Torch’s and her backstory is just Rapunzel’s, she’s super cool and she’s better than their last attempt at making new heroes, the New Warriors 2020, who, I remember they were poorly designed and they felt like they were not yet finished, but the public threw a tantrum about them so Marvel pulled them away, seemingly forever. But Chimera was just Marvel apologizing for their most recent mistakes and I would love to see her in the future, even if she just appeared for one second in Avengers: Secret Wars, but I’ll let her slide because she’s still way too new to be adapted, I’ll give her 5 years, that’s how long it took Miles), etc. I can’t speak for DC because I am not a DC fan, I am a Marvel fan! My point is that Marvel and DC have a vast catalogue of characters and lots of them are both PoCs and have been around for decades (heck, some of them even fell into obscurity, like, Tarantula, a Hispanic hero who, like the Punisher and Deadpool relies on killing the baddies instead of locking them away, is a very smart biologist and seems like a good partner for Tony Stark) yet, they go unused or have not been adapted yet. So, Marvel and DC should be making shows about them instead of race swapping some of their well-established heroes (they’ve done it a little recently), maybe they’ll give those heroes and villains the publicity they rightfully deserve, they’re all so cool, yet, they got wrongfully swept under the rug.

    Thank you for this review. Definitely wish many elements were better. And I wish Ariel would have been more joyful. I mean the moment before Under the Sea, all she was joyfully talking about was the fireworks and the ship, and not Eric. Not how kind, similar, and maybe handsome he was?

      Well, the writers claimed they "fixed Ariel by making her NOT defined by needing a man" because people complain that "Ariel is shallow because she went through all this trouble just to get a man" because it's "sexist" (which we all agree and know is not true) according to feminists, liberals, and female journalists.

    The fact that it's a bad movie has nothing to do with the fact that the actress is black. It's just a bad movie

    I LOVE THE ORIGINAL, I am a fan AND I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE REMAKE, they made my man Eric completely useless just so Ariel can be OP and can have all the spotlight, and murder her OWN KIN and Auntie Ursula, I have nothing against girl boss but Original Ariel is already girl boss anyways there's no need to make the other characters useless and take other's spotlight just so she could shine even more. THE VISUALS ARE GARBAGE, THE ACTING IS MEDIOCRE, ARIEL'S EXPRESSIONS ARE TOO DRY, THE SONGS FOR ME ARE UNDERWHELMING except scuttlebutt that is overwhelming and earrape. THE CHANGES MADE NO ABSOLUTE SENSE and ONLY DESTROYED THE MOVIE.

    as an adoptee I felt insulted when they used the adoption trope just becauset hey had to justify eric being ehite because being a biologival white princess would have screamed colonialism...like realle ,Eric adopted?
    like ,please don't use the adoption trope just because you are trying to justify race after you raceswapped all the other characters
    also,as ana doptee it made be chuckle the idea a adoptee of a different race was the heir of the throne and everyone was ok XD

    Saw it and it Didn't matter who played Ariel, this Movie was Soulless, the Music was Terrible and 90% of the Original Dialog from the original was cut. Which meant loads of unfamiliar Dialog in its place. No thanks I have the 1989 film. And don't even get me started on Melissa McCarthy, She legit Sounded Like she was Drunk. Both her spoken and singing parts. I'll never watch this movie Ever again.
