The way I see it, if Disney wants to make movies based on cartoons, they should make more movies like Maleficent. I've only seen the first movie but I found this take on the story of Sleeping Beauty interesting. It wasn't just a remake, it had its own plot and the characters were unique too (except for the fairy godmothers, they felt uncanny). An even better example of this is Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. I know, it's a controversial movie, but again, it felt like its own thing centred around the original concept.

Considering they turnt the sea witch into a straight villain with the Disney version, I'd like a movie about how Ursula became one. I mean, in the Disney version, her implied old vendetta with Triton, explore it! That would be fun!

As a black person, who wants representation I have to agree with all you said. I really don't like that they raceswapped Ariel. Her design is so iconic and changing it only bring problems. I don't feel represented as a token character or if its forced in like that. They really should have created an original Mermaid and have her be Ariel's friend or sth, then there wouldn't have been any problem.
We can't change it now so I would rather support it since the actress is getting so much hate, but they shouldn't have done it in the first place.

You know what I found hilarious about the backlash to The little Mermaid, it finally got white girls to promote diverse books in some Booktube spaces. I know for a fact, they didn't care about these black authors and stories before, they realized they were being replaced in media. So they're not likely to support the movie about Gabriella the Mermaid.

That is because they ARE pure cashgrabs.
...and easier to make then actually creating something new from scratch.
They wanna make money mainly on nostalgia...which they fail with a lot.
Screwed up all that was good about Mulan and took away her journey of becoming a hero, replaced it with a "wonder woman that was born with special powers, stronger than any men". Took away the personalaty and emotion from the Lion King (while showing amazing CGI). Aladin could have been so much better if Will Smith would have been allowed to be himself instead of copying our beloved Robin Williams (who can't be replaced anyway) etc.
Now they race swapped Ariel to satisfy "woke" people. Which is even more ridicolous when you remember they make money with nostalgia in the remakes.
It's not the same any more.
I don't get why they dont create an movie based on a south american, arfican etc. story/fairy tail.
I am sure there are plenty of great storys out there to tell and adapt!
And I'm sure not only "black" people would love them, but "white" people would be thrilled to see them as well (as long as the characters are likable, you can feel with them, they have personality etc)!

The thing is, if they wanted representation, Ariel canonically has latina best friend from the little mermaid tv show. They've added friends for the princess characters in their live action movies and even a useless sister in mulan so why not bring in a canon character that was a fleshed out character who's race was not her entire character. Gabriella was also deaf and has a cute little octopus friend that uses sign language with her and acts as her interpreter, but that wasn't her whole character. That's two counts of representation with a canon character without stepping on any toes by race bending Ariel.

We also got the original story which was an allegory to being a gay man, they could have made a whole new film more closely based on the story but made the mermaid(or more correctly merman) a gay man instead to represent the author

I think that the whole changing her race thing is really just bringing into the spotlight the big problem with the remakes.
They are changing the stories we grew up with and trying to pass them off as the same thing, when most of the time those things didn't need to be changed to begin with. Its the same problem I have with movie adaptations of books. They are soulless, they take and add with no respect for the thing they claim to be adapting or remaking.

Those stories already changed the original stories anyways, the original little mermaid was an allegory to being a gay man-the reason the mermaid didn’t get the prince and died is to represent the struggle the author went though with being a gay man who fell for a straight man , we simply don’t care cause those aren’t the stories we grew up with, we grew up with the story where Ariel did get the man and didn’t die essaintly taking away the gay allegory in it
The Alice in wonderland remakes Disney made were interesting as they didn’t remake the Disney verison of it they focused more on making a new interruption for the original story, (granted I still much prefer Alice madness return over these films for a darker take on it) if Disney focused on making new interruptions of the fairytales instead of remaking the films themselves I think more people would be onboard-esp if they were to be legitmently darker with their themes and not just litrealy darker with their colorpallete to the point you can’t see anyone

That’s exactly it! I’m one of the white, red haired girls you mentioned towards the end of the video, and I remember when I was little absolutely adoring Ariel because she had red hair, and at the time, neither Brave nor Frozen had been released, so she was the only ginger princess (later on I learned looks don’t matter as much as character, but five-year-old me was pleased nonetheless). I have no problem with Halle playing Ariel (in fact, I quite like her costume design), but I agree with the sentiment of “giving the leftovers to the minorities.” That, to me, seems more unfair than letting them play in remakes and adaptions like this, when everyone deserves to have a story they can relate to in every aspect. Out of all the stories I wish Disney or any other animation/film company would establish, it’s The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Anderson. It’s not my favorite fairy tale ever (looking at you, Alice in Wonderland), but it’s such a great story anyway, and could easily be adapted to fit any culture, race, narrative or cast. Besides that, it’s just a really interesting story.
I think a great original movie that “represents” a culture is Encanto. If Disney wants to do more of that, I’d say I’m all for it, because not only did it present Columbian culture extremely effectively, but it also grabbed us with a heartening story and interesting characters. It’s one of my recent favorite Disney films, and that’s coming from…well, a white red-haired girl with not much say in the matter.
Anyway, this was a great video! I only found you recently (thanks to Cyrus the Great) but I’ve taken to binging all your content, and I’m happy to say I think I’ll stick around for a while ;)

I think it’s disastrous to anyone involved when you do race or gender swapping. It wants to rely off the fame of the white or male character, but also doesn’t seem to realize that it forces the minority character to compete against the already established character. Furthermore, I don’t want any handy me down characters. To me it’s kind of disrespectful and patronizing. Disney doesn’t sincerely care about race otherwise Tiana wouldn’t have been a frog her whole movie and they would have made an entirely new black character instead of race swapping. Heck, they could have even made the first black male lead. Disney just wants to have its cake and eat it too. It wants to sound inviting to all but doesn’t sincerely want to risk having a black lead yet wants to be praised for making a movie with a black lead 🤦🏽‍♀️

@Rokenrol Bro 2019 I think no one complained about Naveen bc his race is made up. He’s from a fictional land. I mean he’s likely based off of a real race but since it’s left ambiguous it caused less drama. I think the marketing played a role too since Tiana was marketed as the first black Disney Princess but the fact that she was a frog for so long disappointed many. I mean I think the movie is fine overall and the soundtrack is good, but that she was a frog for so long was a bit disappointing to many

@@ShellySwirl Disney will make movies with other races of ppl if it turns a profit, but they definitely aren’t as open as they pretend to be. Black characters in Star Wars and Black Panther were heavily censored in China. Just look up the posters in China compared to in the U.S. They compromised their “stance” for profit.
Also Tiana and Pocahontas were both given lighter skin and features (especially Tiana) in Wreck it Ralph until the actress who played Tiana complained and they finally fixed it
Disney’s ultimate goal is to make money and they’ll pander to whoever if it ends in them making a profit. It’s sad but true, especially since I grew up with Disney but it’s just the reality 😔

The leftovers comment really makes great sense. Tiana was good black rep because she was an original character and her race, while not being part of her personality, was still partially relevant to the story due to the time period (she's meant to be a disadvantaged person with goals most can't imagine her completing, which a black woman would be during that time). She wasn't just leftovers, she was the grand Disney version of the classic fairy tale. And she was even more original, honestly. She wasn't a princess who kissed a frog and had him turn to a prince. She was just a woman. Her story is incredible and so is her prince. An original spin on a classic fairy tale with an interracial and mixed-class couple, with the relevance of her race being just enough to not make it seem like it's trying too hard but also not like she's being ignored, makes for the kind of story Disney is trying to sell this new little mermaid as. Halle's Ariel is just a way to get brownie points

🔱🫧 I completely agree with you, it really is a problem is when the industries put certain people or whole races down in order to elevate others. It IS possible to do the latter without having to resort to the former. 😑
For example, I have the most issue with the upcoming live-action Snow White. I'm latina, more specifically Guatemalan, born and raised. BUT I have really pale white skin and dark hair (yeah, it's annoying to me when people assume that ALL Latinamerican people HAVE to be brown. We too come in all shapes and colors, you know. 🙄). Anyways, ever since I was little, Snow White has always been the princess that has looked like me. I even got to play her in a school play because of how much I've always resembled her (even the fact that, back in the day, they didn't draw the princesses as skinny as now, and therefore Snow White was even a tiny bit chubbier than today's standards, same as me!). But now, this upcoming live-action, starting a girl who doesn't look at all like me, is too making me feel a tiny bit erased. And heck, I'm not a person who's ever put that much importance in representation either. But it still kinda feels like now they're taking this princess away from me. The original one will always be there for me to enjoy, but it still feels wrong to me.
All in all, couldn't agree with you more: The best way to represent is giving people their own set of stories, not having them settle for anyone else's scraps. (That being said, to all the people who are still complaining about the live-action remakes: you're entitled to do it, but PLEASE do so while simultaneously supporting their ACTUAL original projects, such as 'Stange World' that's coming soon. If the original stuff keeps flopping, it won't help one bit in them stopping with the remakes. 🙏)
Anyways, good on you for speaking your mind on this matter! Your opinions are always so interesting to listen to. Great video as always. 😊

All of Disney's animated movies change tons of details from their source material. For me it boils down to the quality of the production at hand. There are some things I can accept and some I can't. So far all of Disney's live action remakes have been awful. I have yet to sit through any of the few I began watching to the end. It's a shame they couldn't have come up with something original to showcase Halle's talent. I will admit I don't like the erasing of red headed white Ariel. She's an icon to millions of little girls with a 30 year history in modern culture. I don't think it's right to take away from one to give to the other either. It doesn't send the message we're all in this together.

I don’t like that if you say you don’t like Ariel being black they immediately say you’re racist. I don’t like this change because, aside that it’s being used to pushed Disney’s political agenda, it feels like everytime Disney does something like this Disney is saying: ‘Oh black people can’t succeed telling their own stories. Here! Take this white person’s story! Now I’ll make it big!’
It feels like Disney is saying telling black stories is not worth it and they are not worth to be listen to. I’m Latina and if Ariel was turned into a Latina I would be annoyed as well. Lately Latin-American culture has been done well with movies like Encanto and Coco. They are beautiful! Disney is absolutely capable to tell stories other than white, and by moves like this, it’s even more insulting that they are representing black people like this. I would say ‘Do better Disney’ but I’ve lost all hope in Disney.

Race doesn't define who you really are as a person.
Anyway, your points are valid because you want to make a live-action movie based on their counterparts, not like changing the races. I feel like Ariel being black is just so wrong not to be offended because she's not the same girl we used to watch when we were younger. They could've also made Eric or Triton be played by actors of color too; I remember when Christian Navarro was one of the actors who was considered to play Eric, Disney missed an opportunity there

Though, to be fair I did grow up in Puerto Rico so I was brought up within the culture, surounded by people of all hues and shades more often than not speaking spanish, so for me cartoons were my way of escaping my mundane repetetive life by seeing and hearing folks from different corners of the world. Plus, my parents taught me to not always trust everything I saw on television, so for me it was an escapist fantasy, not where I could find validation for my existance. But, I suppose some folks in the mainland grew up with a different perspective, which can be hard cause it feels like Im some kind of 'traitor' for not caring as much about representation as they do.

Additionally, I can't imagine how angering this must be to the people who animated the 2d movies. They spent so much time on making every animation look smooth. And now realistic movies feel like they're... Overwriting the hard work animators put into it. If I was affected by that, I'd be upset for sure.

  • @aprilvaiarella435
    @aprilvaiarella435 ปีที่แล้ว +10

You've basically said the same thing I've been saying to people talking about this. I have no issue with a black little mermaid, just not specifically Ariel. The original story never gave the mermaid a name or appearance (or personality really), so making this a new version entirely was a reasonable option. Or just not making another crappy live action remake of a classic animated feature, but here we are.
I also don't particularly care for Ariel (she's kind of an irresponsible brat, endangered the world over a beef with dad and still got everything she wanted after everyone else cleaned her mess) and I haven't watched any of these remakes since Beauty and the Beast. They just disappoint me and tend to miss the point of the originals in their desperation to appeal to "modern audiences" or "fix" supposed problems from the animated movie that aren't actually problems.
We just need new stories. There's room for everyone and I want to see stories from other cultures stand along side the well known European tales.

    • @jackskydragon_JW
      @jackskydragon_JW ปีที่แล้ว +12

Yeah, it's annoying and worring me that I'm seeing so many redheads being turned into people with another characteristics that aren't redheads, and very oddly latelly they're specifically turning them into black people in the majorityof times (from what I've seen). You can't make more representation erasing another representation! That doesn't work like that! This is swapping not adding. Also, it seems very selective. It seems like they're picking all redheads and turning them into black characters or changing them into not redheads.
Also, its oddly specific that they're turning redheads specifically into black people lately, it could be any other character that they changed and it could've be changing redheads into any other characteristics but it's almost always a redhead being changed into a black character lately (from what I've seen) and I wonder why. Now it's a pattern.
I already saw many stories now swapping redheads for black people when they could've swapped a white character or created a new character. In one remake they created a pink (literally the colour pink for skin) girl and turned a redhead into a black character when they could've both, keeping the redhead and putting a relevant black character. It could be very cool.
Just to make clear to avoid misunderstandings: I have no problems with black people or any other ethnic group, on contrary, I love diversity, it is great and makes the world entertaining and very colorful and full of diferent POVs and appearances, my artististic soul loves to explore those differences as well. It gives life to live.
Also, not like it's a great argument since you admiring someone (real or character) doesn't make you immune to prejudice, but: Static Shock is my favorite super hero as well as some of my favorites super heros are Green Lantern John Stewart, Black Panter and Spider Man Miles Morales. I also love Tiana. I love Gus from the Owl House too.
What's is worrying me is the apparent selective erasure of redheads.
I really hope that it's not happening but it seems like what's happening, for now at least.
I really hope that they stop thinking that they can just swap or change a minority or underrepresented group into another minority or underrepresented group and count it like representation (and in some works they even keep a cast of "not so much representative characters" intact while changing the characters that are minority or part of an underrepresented group and they call it (or try to make it seem) like they're putting more diversity and representation into the work).
      That's... worring.
I hope not to cause any misunderstanding, I would love that more people can feel representated but I hate that they're doing it in a half baked way and half done and erasing others while at it instead of adding it into what they already have.
Also my main language is not English and I'm not used to express my more complex thoughts in English so I may not have been all clear about what I meant, if so, I apologize.
It's not my intention to offend anyone. I hope that in the future EVERYONE can feel themselves being well representated and valued in stories (and irl too).

i personally don't agree with the criticism to disney for the casting, as someone who acts it should never be about how you look, the person casted needs to be the person who can best act the role. we can't know that she was casted over white people because she is black unless Disney releases their true intentions with the casting. i don't want majorities to be put down to uplift minorities, i believe in total equality between groups but i also believe in the power of representation and i anticipate that the new ariel will show that she deserved this role on her merit. i think that this will make a lot of black children happy to see, as evident by the trailer it already has. for this reason in my opinion, as long as the acting and performance for the role is good i am happy with the Disney casting.
as for erasure, the live action movies usually don't come out as beloved as the animated version. i think the classic red-haired ariel will be just fine. it's fun to see how everything will play out in live action but everyone knows and loves the classic ariel and i truly don't believe someone that iconic could be erased like that. the good thing about animated movies is that the character can look however with the actor looking completely different, but in live action sometimes choosing the right actor means that they will not meet the appearance of the original. as ive stated, in my opinion appearance shouldn't matter, if you go in with the right mindset of just judging the merit of the actor instead of appearance it will likely turn out a better experience.
what it all comes down to is its just not a big deal. i hope ive expressed that well enough here, that whether you like the choice or don't in the long run it really doesn't matter. it's an interesting topic for a peaceful discussion and i like hearing people's reasonable views on it because id never considered that people wouldn't like it for the reason of her not looking like classic ariel.

I agree with you. I don't have a problem with the live action Little Mermaid casting differently raced actors than the original. I will only have a problem if Disney starts to market their new characters as being better than the old ones and try to erase them from history, which is very unlikely to happen since all past live action remakes have never replaced the old characters so I highly doubt that will happen with Ariel. I believe most people will just live happily with two different Ariels in the Disney cannon.

When it comes to changing only the skin color of a popular character, for representation, without changing anything else about their story, or personality, I remember what a black youtuber said:
At the end of the day when people think of that character, they'll think of the original version, not the fanart or remake they've done, so in the end it's not really representation.
And I don't know, it left me thinking a lot, I think they had a point, like for example, Black Panter is important for many, because of his ethnicity and skin color, but also because he is his own person and character, it is not an adaptation of anyone else, it is something original and memorable.

I think that this actually can be tied into a bigger question of how many liberties a person is allowed to take when adapting something. For example, there's always going to be the challenge of deciding what to cut from a book when adapting it into a movie, but you can cut and even change things in a movie adaption in order to make the story flow better in a shorter amount of time without compromising what made the original book so good in the first place.
Looking at the world of comics, most well-known characters have gone through too many changes to count throughout their lifetime. At one time, Batman walked around with a gun on his hip. However, even though that is part of Batman's history, if someone wanted to adapt that version of Batman today, people would not be happy.
On the other hand, people don't seem to care as much if lesser-known characters are changed. Mr. Freeze used to be a generic C-tier Batman villain, but then, Batman: The Animated Series reinvented Mr. Freeze as a tragic character who is just looking for a way to cure his cryogenically frozen wife, no matter the consequences. That interpretation of Mr. Freeze became so popular that it became canon in the comics. So, even though the adaption drastically changed the character, it ended up being a positive change.
I think the solution is finding the line between allowing creators to make changes that they think are beneficial and honoring the source material while keeping the expectations of the fans in mind. The problem is that this is easier said than done.

Not only would people of color receive the representation they deserve. On top of that no one could complain about race swapping, double standards and a general lack of creativity. And if the writing is good even the bubble which inevitably will call it woke will shrink to a much, much smaller size. Black people get what they want, white people keep what they have, and everyone enjoys high quality entertainment instead of pointlessly fighting each other. Everyone wins.

I don't hate the live-action Disney remakes. There are some that I genuinely like (Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin). I don't mind the remakes, so long as they are entertaining. However, I do understand why people don't like them. Most of them are pretty much the exact same movie as the original animated classics with the only differences being throw-away lines that "fix the issues" of the originals. For example, in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Belle asks the servants if everything in Beast's castle is alive and tries to talk to a hairbrush, only for her to find out it's just a hairbrush. It seems pretty clear that the only reason that this short exchange between Belle and the servants exists is to address a nitpick that some people have with the original, that nitpick being whether or not Beast had any furniture prior to being cursed since every piece of furniture seems to be alive.
At the same time, I don't think that some of the critics out there are helping with this problem. For example, I heard one critic asking why Pinocchio was getting a remake when the original animated movie is considered a timeless classic, but then, when the movie came out, he asked why they cut so many classic scenes and songs from the original movie in the live-action remake. I think that this is exactly why Disney is not making drastic changes to their live-action remakes, because people complain if they aren't exactly the same as the timeless classics.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about the "original" movie which isn't really original. Disney didn't write Little Mermaid, they just made their own version based off a 200-300 year old Hans Christian Anderson fairytale. Do I like their version? To be honest I hate Ariel's design and think that old Disney movies are super cheesy, even though I personally have never seen it, nor grew up with movies like that. I'm one of those 2000s kids who grew up with every kids cartoon on tv but barely watched any Disney movies, as a kid -I could name everything from PBS kids, to the Qubo channel- . I honestly don't care what skin color they give her, she's a mermaid. If I were to design her I'd put some fins on her hands too, or maybe do something to make it look like she's underwater for a long time. I don't want to give hate on the Disney cartoon Little Mermaid to much, but I absolutely despise her design and don't understand why people are so ignorant not to realize what was wrong with their "Childhood favorite" and then cringe at some early episodes of SpongeBob. My point is, Disney shouldn't have to make their remake princess look exactly like the 2D chick, because that's what remakes are. They changed Cinderella's design in the 2016 remake (which in my opinion is super underrated -idk who can watch a movie form 1950 anyway-) to look more like the time period and setting, and the actress who plays her did an amazing job. The original Little Mermaid is supposed to be about prejudice, toxic people preventing a girl from loving someone who looks different, not about a topless underage bimbo simping for a Kpop prince (sorry I had to roast them like that, I didn't grow up with the movie).
Also, I understand so many people grew up and loved the original, I can't really see why, I think it's the movie cheesiest movie ever, especially after hearing that she's canonly 16 years old! (Why do they draw her body like that? And make her wear "sexy" outfits?) Disney's gotten a lot better at animating and designing teen characters, especially for Brave, Encanto, and Turning Red. I'd probably have different opinions about the first Little mermaid movie is their designs looked different and if I watched it and enjoyed it as a kid, but since I grew up watching SpongeBob and Max & Ruby, I can't see why so many people are angry about the new Ariel's skin color, but not the fact that they have a 16 year old girl wear nothing but seashells. I guess I'm too modern?
also, btw I grew up as a redhead and I was young when Brave came out (probably about 9 or 10) and I thought Merida was so awesome! Like I said, I had other cartoons with pretty redhead girls so I didn't feel like a minority

What matters is that she's an original character. She's not JUST the little mermaid. The little mermaid can be whatever race.
My thing is that this is ARIEL. If someone swapped the race of any of my original characters, regardless of if their race is important to the story or not, I would be upset. I'd rather they just make a new character instead. Create a new mermaid with a new name. And then there's no problem.
Yes, Disney didn't create the little mermaid, but they did create Ariel.
BUT TO BE HONEST, I would rather have Disney or any company produce a high production version of the original fairytale. I like the original little mermaid WAY more than Disney's version.

@@TheArtisticAloubell You're right on that one I guess. I don't know much about the original or the Disney version, i assumed that she had a name in the original story, but you could give her whatever name you want. (I have a little fairytale series I was planning on doing, and I named the Little Mermaid "Elizabeth" and instead of Briar Rose for Sleeping Beauty, I named her "Rosie" to sound cuter)
Oh I also agree with you there! I don't like old Disney movies! I actually like Ponyo, which is a Ghibli movie based off the Little Mermaid, but they used their own creativity, made her younger, and removed the romance. It was actually more similar to Luca but more magical. But I totally agree, Disney does a good job with their original stories (like Encanto and Luca) but when it comes to remakes and doing their own versions of fairytales/other stories, they don't do as well. No hate on Tangled or Chicken Little, but I would prefer a smaller company that does something closer to the story. Disney sometimes goes to far to "impress" people.

I don’t really care what live action Ariel looked like. I feel like it’s not taking away from white red haired girls because the original still exists. Ariel can be for both groups. I see it like a multiverse type of Situation like some series have for different generations of the show/movie/brand. But I definitely agree Disney should adapt new fairytales instead of remaking old princess. It would be met with less backlash and give light to other cultures stories (if well researched). Plus like give us new stories please you can’t expect us to be excited when we already know the plot.

I don't get what it is about race swapping that makes me so uncomfortable. Maybe it's the fact that most of the race swapping I've seen ends up making a character fall into a stereotype of that race they have been made into e.g the Amphibia fandom race swapping Sasha,a German/Slavic girl who is someone with a temper, control issues and parental problems, into a black girl? Maybe it's the fact that some people raceswap characters, erasing them and the representation certain minorities got from them and passing off the race swapped character as representation e.g the firebenders from Avatar:The Last Airbender, who were Japanese coded in the cartoon, were made Indian in the live-action movie or,ONCE AGAIN! The Amphibia fandom race swapping Marcy, who was Taiwanese, into a black girl.I don't really know, but I know for sure that I do not like it. People of colour deserve better, original characters, not someone else's sloppy seconds. Like I'm Zimbabwean and only God knows how long we Africans have been waiting for an African Disney princess. There is so much folklore and so many myths that can be adapted pretty well into animated movies from all across Africa. Anyway,Great video Aloe. Very well made and with many good points!😘😘

People are always saying oh but it’s cute when you show them it and they say it’s just like me. Personally, this movie does have me upset with the way Americans are basically hypocrites with this one. Like, for one, it is factually whitewashing as whilst her race was never outright stated in the novel, she actually is based off of the North-west European myth of the Undine which does depict them as pretty Nordic European looking maidens. By folklore canon if you can call it that, she is white. It's a Danish author and a book important in Danish culture, that's inspired by legends from the author's culture. What's so difficult to understand about it?
Which brings me to the Americans, who A, would have cancelled this movie if it had been blackwashing, B, called the Danish racist for pointing out the story is important to their culture that just happens to be white, C, literally use arguments organizations like BLM complain about all the time- 'White people doing their culture better,' as I seriously got a reply from an American who was saying they were taking European shit and making it better on a black TH-camr's channel discussing the movie and D, often bring up mermaids from around the entire world with a common example being the Japanese Ningyo- when those aren't like western mermaids at all. Ponyo is inspired by a Ningyo, do you think she looks like Ariel? Different cultures have different depictions of what is considered a 'mermaid'.
Don't even get started on how some even started insulting the Dutch because for some reason Americans have my culture as their default setting for a North-West European country other then England when they don't actually know which North-Western European culture they're speaking about. It's a serious thing that's been happening since centuries, hell our English name even refers to the Germans, we just call ourselves Nederlanders whilst the Germans refer to themselves as the Deutsch. The internet exists nowadays people, why do (mostly) Americans continue to make this mistake and just blame it on us Dutchfolk?
The hypocrisy and the insults is where I drew the line with this movie. She's white, and they're blackwashing her to pander to the woke crowd. Imagine insulting two entire cultures and calling them racist simply because they're trying to point out the hypocrisy behind it all.

Likewise, The Little Mermaid can look like anything BUT Ariel, who is super specific, can not...or rather, should not.
If it were an original character, I wouldn't say anything. Representation is great! But create original characters for them and not race-swap old ones. We shouldn't say "well, it's better than nothing." Standards should be higher than that.
Let a pre-established character have their qualities and create new ones for us to love. Everyone deserves originality and respect.

The thing about Disney is that they counted on Halle Baily getting hate. They want to milk the live action remake trend for as long and as often as they can, and the only way to do that now is to distract everyone with bigger drama. They're martyring her by kicking up as much fuss as they can. And it's working, any legitimate skepticism people voice over the other questionable changes to the story are drowned out by this single change. All of these movies as a whole are really bad, but they make a lot of money, and they're not going to stop until Disney finds more IP to ruin.

To be honest I stopped caring about the live action movies. But I was quite honestly surprised by people who felt blindsided by the upcoming live action little mermaid movie. Since a few years ago in the same year or year after the live action Cinderella movie came out, I'm pretty sure Disney went out and said that Halle will be playing Ariel, so this has been planned for a long while.

I think they realized that Tiana is a frog for 80% of her movie, which won't be justified in live action and that would offend folks so they racebended on of the others who weren't human.

I feel like it changes a lot about representation.. but it doesn't really matter. I don't have a problem with Ariel being black other than its weird that it has changed to me I've grown up knowing the look of the characters but I also feel like they're just trying to erase the older one . (Ariel = has her own traits probably should look like her) (idk but I agree with you I'm not racist and do not support any racism but I can get why being black isn't a personality taking somethings Identity and changing it is weird . but I think the new remake may be a cool one but we'll see!) Can't really be erasing anything if the old one is still there. The MCU doesn't erase the original comics. The new iterations of TMNT, Monster High, and Ducktales don't cancel out their predecessors. The Disney Reboots don't erase the classics. They just tell a similar story.

    • @TheArtisticAloubell
      @TheArtisticAloubell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Marvel and DC, I think, are exceptions to the rule given their long history of having multiple universes and characters can look however. Ideally, though, race-swaps of any kind just wouldn't happen.
And most of the things you mentioned didn't change the race or something super inherent to the character. Personalities might have been altered, styles, and maybe fashion changed, but changing someone's race is a different thing entirely.
It's just feels icky to me and super lazy.
If they just gave the mermaid a different name I wouldn't have a problem.

@@TheArtisticAloubell Nothing wrong if it's a you problem. Race after all is a social construct made by Angelo-Saxxons in the 1600's in order for them to have the power. It's one of the many reason why I don't really care about race swapping unless it affects their ethnicity which it this case, it really doesn't. One thing you gotta know about reboots is that it instantly is a separate universe. Not just for Marvel or DC, but the same goes for TMNT, Monster High, Ducktales, and whatever. Monster High has G1, G2, and G3. TMNT has 1987, 2003, 2012, 2018, and the upcoming 2023. Ducktales has 1995 and 2017. The Little Mermaid now has 1985(I think?) and 2023. This is another universe separate from the classic. Same goes for any Broadway adaptation. On Broadway, Ariel has been played by many different people of many different backgrounds inckuding Au'ili Cravalo who you might know as the voice of Moana. The classic version of Ariel isn't going anywhere. It's still on Disney+ or 🏴‍☠️🦜☠️ right next to the original Lion King or Aladdin.

That comment that you made about Ariel has to be Ariel makes absolutely no sense. Just because her skin isn’t pale that doesn’t make her any less Ariel. Let’s say Ariel was casted as a white woman, but she was more overweight. You guys would still complain. There are black girls who are born with red hair. Ariel just have to have a beautiful singing voice and the red hair. If the Disney parks can have both black Cinderella and white Cinderella they can do the same for Ariel. And this is coming from a ginger. The whole thing about redheads won’t get to see themselves is kinda hypocritical. Og Ariel is still here she never left. This is the first time that a live action movie in Disney is actually going to be AMAZING. The characters a fish for god sakes.

I think my comment makes perfect sense. I have original characters of my own, and if someone changed their race, even if their race isn't a focal point of their story, I would be upset. Characters have unique looks and personalities. Ariel is her own character. She isn't just ANY little mermaid. She's Ariel. Make a new little mermaid with a new name and new identity. Like I said, I don't care about the race of a mermaid, I care about Ariel's race. I care about Ariel's look. Characters deserve to be respected when they are unique. Want a black mermaid? That's great! Give her her own name.
That's just my take on the matter.

At first, I was surprised because the news said Disney is not having a red headed white Ariel. It is the “it wasn’t in the book” argument. Than I got over it. When I heard Halle Bailey got the role, I was excited because her voice is great and her acting skills are good. Some say they wanted her to be Tianna.
Anyways, again, I was excited. Than I heard it was a hoax and did not know what to believe. And there a bunch of comments stating that you don’t have a lot of representation for red headed girls and erasing that hurts that group.

I have two fairytales that could have interesting adaptations. First is Blue Beard which could easily be turned into a suspenseful horror movie as the protagonist tries to hide that she knows Blue Beard's secret and perhaps try to kill him for what he has done. And second is the Black School, but not for the story, rather, the setting of the school itself. It's a literally underground school that teaches black magic, with the students reading books with flaming text in the dark cave. There really are no teachers or staff and they are given food by mysterious hands that come from the walls. It's such a weird setting that you could have a lot of fun with. Hogwarts, eat your heart out!

Maybe Halle did get the role just on pure talent. Idk. But the current political climate makes it hard to know the exact agenda of everyone. It shouldn't be that way, but it is, unfortunately. >__

I was so happy to see that compilation of little African American girls reacting to Ariel being Black in the remake because it was like they were seeing themselves on the screen (I hope I’m not speaking for the black community bc it’s not my place, it’s just what I’ve seen), and I was worried that you might take the far conservative perspective like Matt Walsh, Steven Crowder, Ben Shapiro, etc. But no. You had a completely different take of your own. I’m a subscriber so I did want to see your opinions on this because the topic in general is real hot! From a hopefully general perspective (pls don’t kill me), your points were understandable, and you recognized both sides and saw the nuance in the topic. You didn’t want to just choose a side like hopping on a bandwagon, but formed your own outlook.
