Nightdive Studios has made another incredible remaster in Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster. I 100%ed it's achievements this morning of the day when this video came out and of me writing this comment. The game is the newest of my 38 Perfect Games on Steam that I rock as of the moment of writing this comment! Nice review GamingBolt.
$30 may b too much, but I paid it cause I want to fund Nightdive Studios so they can Remake Jedi Knights 2, Mysteries of the Sith and Jedi Outcast and Academy. It was worth it to me.
As a big Star Wars fan, this was my main PC game during my high school years. I played it from start to finish more times than I can count. Every turn and enemy location basically memorized to this day, LOL.
Star Wars Dark Forces Star Wars Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight 1 Star Wars Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight 1 Mysteries of the Sith Star Wars Dark Forces 3 Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast Star Wars Dark Forces 4 Jedi Knight 3 Jedi Academy. Gotta love old Lucas Arts. Hopefully the rest of the series gets the same treatment in years to come. And not something akin to the sad product that is the Battlefront collection.
A great remaster of Dark Forces, The only thing missing is no manual save feature. Dark Forces should never have been called a Doom clone, it wasn't one at all. having a jump button, an actual story, mission objectives and not just the usual get from A to B made the game nothing like Doom.

I remember learning the basics of learning how to use DOS on my parents Windows 97 computer just to play games (including this) by the son of a close family friend. I remember eventually reaching a level a long way into the game and getting stuck for weeks before giving up on the game. I'm generally good at puzzles so this game always haunted me as I never beat it. Glad to hear that specific aspect wasn't just hard for me even though I hadn't even begun my adolescence before giving up
the enemies feel snappier than they did even , I get hit more often than i remember (on the old PowerPC, PC, and MacBook laptop from back in the day and DOS Box stuff) on Hard. Feels like things have been really been smoothed and I appreciate if the hard difficulty has been made more difficult than it was (it felt very very easy for me when I was playing it last time, getting gunned down fair and square in the 2nd stage by troopers and officers felt refreshing).
I hope they add brightness/gamma toggle in a future update. I find certain levels, partially the first two are way to dark to the point of being nearly impossible to see things.
I've been playing the original since I was a kid, the remaster, let's just say after completing Halo 2 on legendary, Dark Forces wasn't much of a challenge. The Dark Forces randomizer on the other hand. Even when used on the remaster is hard.

@@MentalMachine Oh no I didn't beat Halo 2 legendary as a kid, I was 21, 5 years into my Halo career. H2A was my first chance at being able to play H2's campaign in a stable manner. I beat Dark Forces on hard when I was about 13.

What's great about this, is Nightdive apparently remasters more than just one game in a series. So I won't be too surprised to see Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight 1 and Mysteries of the Sith get the remaster treatment at some point. Dark Forces 2 was the pinnacle of Star Wars games for me in the 90's, when we were surrounded by games like Rebel Assault 2, Rogue Squadron, the Super Star Wars trilogy, Shadow of the Empire, and more.
I really hope they do Jedi Knight Jedi Outcast because it’s unplayable on console. Feels like I’m running on ice. I loved it on PC of course…but I don’t play pc much anymore

I share this sentiment. Especially with the Sequel Trilogy. Timothy Zahn’s Trilogy Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command are canon in my book cause those should have been the Sequel Trilogy. Star Wars is Female now. The Force is Female!!
On steam I give it a 20 out of 10 solely for the fact that old custom levels the community made for the original work on the remaster too. For console: A solid 10 out of 10 for basically being a modernized version of the game controls wise and not compromising the visuals. Do I think we should've had something like Halo 2 Anniversary? Yes, definitely, absolutely. However this is the exact game a remember, and honestly, it's nice to have an old school shooter on my Switch and Series X. No hand holding just "Get the job done, good luck have fun!"
The puzzle aspect of the game is the hardest part. Bust out an online guide if you need to. Other than that, the actual shooting and scooting is fine at medium difficulty other than that level on Jabba's ship. That one is a bitch at medium and hard.

The barest minimum. Given what now qualifies as a remaster I’m out. I’ll have remakes or nothing. And this is right next door to nothing. “Much more detailed” is oven to some objectivity and I’d say they repainted it just enough so it doesn’t look like lego. Which it would’ve if they’d left it. Once again, that’s not optional for a “remaster”. Did you play the original side-by side with this? The repaint could be an algorithm that’s been curated by a human. Say 78% algorithm and 22% human correction. Remastering has gotten pretty darned easy lately looking at this.
Does this still have auto-aim? At times in this video, it doesn't look like it as shots go right past an enemy, but since it's the E11 Blaster, that could just be normal misses. Auto-aim was the one thing I hated about the original game. I hated not being able to shoot the explosive cannister next to an enemy because the auto-aim would insist on targeting the enemy first. Or not being able to shoot at the enemies I want, because something else is closer. Other than that, I would have been OK if they had replaced the sprites with (optional) 3D models. Nothing too high-res, just ones like in the sequel, Jedi Knight.

I know this isn't technically a "source port", but every other source port for a DOS FPS (Doom, Duke 3D, etc) has included the option to turn off auto-aim. I'm pretty sure the two attempts to reverse engineer the Dark Forces engine also had that option. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to hope that this remaster doesn't discourage the authors from completing the Force Engine.
I play with M&K cause I tried the controller and tried to get it to be smooth and can’t do it. It looks and feels janky is cause Devs for some reason keep putting in the “Ramp Up” with the aiming. Idk why people think Ramp Up is a good idea and I don’t know its purpose either. Apex has it, now every Shooter adds it now and it’s so fucking annoying and they don’t give you a way to disable it in the options menu.
It never would have been made in the first place if the most they could get was $5. It's a very niche remaster, they might sell a few ten thousand copies, and they've got to recover all of their costs on that limited quantity.

It's perfect. Remasters that fundamentally change the original game suck. The goal of any remaster should be a light touch that only addresses necessary quality of life issues like controls, resolution, frame rate, ect. The core gameplay and look and feel should remain intact. That's exactly what they did and they did a great job of it.

I never played this as a kid, but this has GOT to be a BUILD engine game like Duke3d and Shadow Warrior right? The aesthetic is almost unmistakable

It's how the game was ''ORIGINALLY'' designed. It doesn't have to stay that way. Was it originally designed in 4K, 120FPS? No. So I just blew up your logic. They ADDED modern features. The same way a dev can EASILY add a manual save. It's very easily done. You're not very smart.

Because it's a god tier Star Wars game.
Superior to Doom in almost every way.
Better engine, better level design, better weapons, better narrative and it's OG Star Wars before the dark times of the prequel and sequel trilogies.
@@woodsie315 The prequels were good, and did wonders for the world building of Star Wars even the OT couldn't accomplish.
