    I love this video about the flywoo Explorer LR 4 v2 and wish that you would make more videos about it, maybe a update video with newer flight controller and esc

      @JohnCuppi  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks James. Honestly, I still have this drone and have not seen any need to update the flight controller and ESC at all so there would not be much to say. Those are expensive now and shouldn't be upgraded unless necessary and/or if you have a failure and need to replace it. The F7 flight controller that this comes with is still more than will be needed any time soon.
      Today my explorer LR 4 V2 is running the newest Betaflight 4.6.x test version actually and I've tried the new altitude hold feature out. The only thing I *did* update was the GPS, moving to an M10 GPS from M8 was a huge upgrade. Highly recommend that and it's cheap like $15 to do.

    Very well made John. this puts a new spin on how people think of acro flying. Normally when I see acro it is power loops, hard dives, splits and metal music and this certainly gives it a different appeal. Mixing the world of fun flying with hardcore and FPV acro with cinematic is fantastic. Great work on the video.

      @@JohnCuppi It truly is and I want to see where it goes from here. I believe somewhere down the line we are gonna see gimbaled camera drones with acro capabilities in a very light sense. They of course will not take the punishment of the hardcores but I think they will exist.

    I remember being on a live show with one time, and you talked about flying FPV smoothy, and they were surprised because they thought only way you could fly FPV was full throttle the entire flight. So this video will really help many people understand FPV better. Great review, very detailed, you explained everything thoroughly and I loved the flight footage. And now you can add digital image transmission and GPS to your own builds, it takes it to another level.

    also there are printed protection cover on the frame, also the battery pad and the strip. Removing all of this and use some electric tape may make 4s lihv 1100mah possible without compromising the dji air unit.

  • @idontlikebigbrother9778
    @idontlikebigbrother9778 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's using the dji air unit that weights about 30g
    switching to the analog video transmit may save around 25g, makes may batteries possible.
    also, the original flywoo explorer using the nin 1404 2750kv motor, which is supposed to spin on 4s.
    If change to the 1404 3750kv and using 3s battery, maybe less weight can be gained and make gopro mounting possible

    What would you say is the best pack to give best battery/weight ratio with a SMO 4k (30.02g) on board, if staying under 250g is not a concern?

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would still strongly recommend the GNB 1100mah 4S. The weight and performance I have received from that battery have been excellent and continue to get similar flight times months later. I think the key is to take really good care of it - no over discharging, and especially try to not leave it fully charged for long.

I'm picking up the analog version and planning to use it with the GAONENG GNB 1100MAH 4S you suggest in this vid, and then slapping a Thumb Pro on it. Should come in at 246 grams. Appreciate the effort you put into this.

      @JohnCuppi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really appreciate you taking the time to make this comment. Thank you.
      In the last year or so, I’ve significantly slowed down creating detailed content like this because total viewership and feedback on FPV drone content here on TH-cam has went down dramatically. So, to hear that this video even though it’s an older one, helped you out toward making the final decision, is fantastic.
      I still have this quad by the way. I think you are correct, you should be able to get under 250g with analog flywoo explorer lr 4 and that gnb 1100mah 4s plus the run cam thumb pro. If this works out, please let me know.

It's why I picked up the goggles I did, at the price I did. Videos like yours, that go over weights, flight times, set ups, and combinations help me figure out how to stay under 250g so I don't have to mess with remote ID, and still get the best mix of flight times and performance. Most other videos just throw out the on-paper specs, but don't go into battery sizes, performance differences between the batteries, and how to mix and match. • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GPS rescue is pre-set up in this quad -- but I recommend my settings at 8:47 in this video and it's important to understand how GPS rescue will function as well with the various options. Unfortunately, no, there are no HD monitor or screen options to get an FPV view with DJI unless you buy the extremely expensive smart controller. There is the unofficially supported digiview but I strongly recommend avoiding using it for flying, there is way too much latency. It's good only for sharing a flight with someone. I believe the smart controller has significant latency, too.

    Quick question and I haven't got a solid answer yet. In the failsafe tab for GPS Rescue. Will GPS rescue work with the Allow arming without fix turned on and the quad gps has minimum satellites locked? or will the GPS rescue not work at all with the Allow arming without fix turned on?

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only lose the GPS Rescue function if you arm BEFORE acquiring the min number of satellites. If you wait until that happens before you arm then you will still have the GPS Rescue function available even with the "Allow Arming Without Satellite Fix" option set to yes.
      But if you take off BEFORE you get a proper satellite fix, let’s say 3 satellites when the minimum in betaflight is set to 5. Then even if you get the required number of satellites AFTER arming while you’re flying, the GPS rescue will not work.

      @caymandiver75 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCuppi Thanks!!

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And - personally, in this video I recommended turning allow arming without a fix off… but I actually run with it on all the time myself.
      So why did I advise to turn it off? because I have seen so many people get caught with lost quads because Allow Arming Without A Fix was set to ON. Pure user error because they did not pay attention to the satellites locked / fix locked before take off. They take off without the minimum number of satellites locked, gain them in the air while flying, and think they will be ok. But they aren’t. And then have an incident and wonder why return to home / rescue did not work for them. With Allow Arming without a fix = off, this mistake can never happen!
      The reason I run with it ON is because I do a preflight test battery run. It takes a few minutes to lock satellites into memory for the day in the first battery, so that’s my preflight time. To do that, I decided I don’t need betaflight to watch out for me on my satellite lock.

    the replacement arms are 7 dollars... I think it can freestyle.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can freestyle, but I just don’t see a reason to pick this drone to do it vs. the many others on the market. $7 an arm when you are practically guaranteed to break them every freestyle session is more annoying than expensive probably.

    • @greedfox7842
      @greedfox7842 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCuppi I really just don't want to have to repair more than one quad... I was kinda in the market for a quad that could be somewhat good for anything. while being able to reach out with longer flights and ranges available and carry a action-cam.
      and again, more the point, repairing this little quad is going to be cheaper all around than repairing a five or a seven.
      it also has some braces that greatly reduce breaks.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greedfox7842 Totally get that. But, maybe you would consider some unibody frames from companies that provide a warranty for life on them, like armattan?
      Armattan marmotte and the impulserc apex are practically indestructible. Armattan's warranty is real, I've claimed on it previously for non carbon fiber parts on their frame. This way you are not spending a dime on a new frame if you somehow manage to break it.
      I love my flywoo explorer lr 4, and it's still going strong. And if you primarily use it for LR, you'll love it! The braces will definitely help no matter what, I believe they have saved me so far from breaking an arm in a few accidents that I've had.

    Really good review - I'm in the market for a sub 250g LR drone. This is on my short list and so is the Rekon 4 HD version. If you had to pick today, would you take the Rekon 4 over the Explorer LR HD V2 ? Thanks again.

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you and this is a great question! I must be honest it's difficult to answer. Going based on hardware specification sheets -- I like the 28A ESC on the Rekon4, that's better than Flywoo at 13a. But the Zeus F728 lacks an on-board barometer, which is annoying to not have if you choose to run iNav on the Rekon4 in the future. You'll need to add an external barometer. I think for me it would come down to whatever I could get cheapest with rekon4 vs flywoo explorer lr hd v2. Just make sure the rekon4 LR you get has the caddx polar, it was originally released with the caddx nebula nano and that camera was horrible.

    • @zira_fluff4105
      @zira_fluff4105 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCuppi Thanks for that analysis - did not know about the barometer difference. I have known about the junk nano camera to avoid for a while. :-)

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zira_fluff4105 the barometer would matter to me because ideally, running iNav software on these models is the way to go - not betaflight. But it requires a GPS+Compass module. It is my next project for the flywoo explorer LR, to upgrade it to iNav. That’s since iNav is supported now for FlyWoo explorer’s Goku F745 stack with various. I’ve just been tied up as of late with other reviews. 👍

    Hi John, I just watched your video about the XJT Module, the Firmware update cable. I have a Taranis X9D+ and can bind it to my R-XSR, but it only has telemetry, no inputs showing in Betaflight. I moved the yellow wire over as you mentioned in your video for SBUS_OUT. What you never mentioned in the video is, once changing the wire do I reconnect my Radio to RX with the cable and flash the fw again? Because I tried that and I just keep getting an error message. I hope you see this. I appreciate any info!

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with R-XSR and the Taranis X9D+. If you are indeed bound (the r-xsr receiver has a green light) but you have no stick input in betaflight, I might suspect a different problem. A firmware flash shouldn't be necessary... but I can't rule it out. Unfortunately in the number of years since I made that video, firmware problems have been an issue with FrSky products. In the past, there was no need to worry about flashing firmware to get a radio to bind or sync up properly, but with FrSky's new ACCESS protocol, things got a bit more complicated since then. A firmware update cable does indeed require it to be in the same order that it came, so you'd have to move the pin back. Before trying to update firmware, I know this may sound redundant to ask but are you sure that the connection to the sbus pad is solid? I've had cold joints stop connectivity too, and a reflow fixed it. Just throwing the idea out there. What flight controller is this, also?

    • @JohnCuppi

      Yes I still do recommend this. I am still flying this Explorer V2 digital! I have not lost or broke it, been a very reliable quad. ExpressLRS is my recommendation today for Long Range flight, CrossFire will work as well but since I’ve made this video I stopped buying new crossfire receivers. ExpressLRS has just been a more economical choice for me. The modules can be had as cheap as $39 - it’s really worth getting one! ☺️What do you currently run now?

      Interesting. I'd be curious to know what happens if instead of Max for the altitude, change it to Fixed, and then at CLI do:
      set gps_rescue_initial_alt = 50
      This will change it to 50m fixed altitude for return to home. It would be interesting to know if it works correctly with fixed or not, there could be some issue with the Max setting.

    So your limit was your goggles, not the drone? So why not try again with a better configuration because 3km is pretty bloody dreadful. A DJI Mini was doing that a long long time ago and is cheaper than this stupid setup. The DJI Mini 2 full fly more combo is cheaper than your setup here by far and does nearly 6 (it's MEANT to do 10 but because you cannot adjust antennas nor put out any serious power with commercial DJI kit you can never reach that).

    • @JohnCuppi
      @JohnCuppi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re comparing this to the DJI Mini 2, you’re missing the whole entire point of this platform. This is definitely not the quad for you, and that’s ok. It can reach further out if you’re willing to buy some directional antennas for the goggles, but this was my experience stock.
