Netflix’s Avatar - What A Piece Of S*** (Review)

- Netflix released Avatar: The Last Airbender and so far it has received mixed reviews, and after watching Avatar The Last Airbender myself I can see why, as in this review of Netflix's Avatar I go over everything wrong with this series from terrible CGI to horrendous dialogue coupled with boring and bland performances by the actors. Overall Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is far from the quality of the original.

One thing the show's creators said that stood out to me was they said sokka was a "sexist" in the original so they toned him down. Being a prick was part of sokka's character in the original. Also when the kiyoshi warriors quickly put him in his place it is revealed the tough guy thing was an act deep down he feels useless because he isn't a bender like his sister or ang, he wasn't able to beat the firebenders that invaded his village and his father didn't take him to war with him. Sokka learns to let go of ego and ask the kiyoshi warriors for training. As they train together both develop respect for each other. Sokka's growth wouldn't happen without the "sexism" But modern writers are too scared to take risks because of backlash. They try not to offend anyone (unless it's straight men ofcourse)
Are you honestly going to argue that Sokka's entire character was just sexism and learning to out grow sexism? Cause I think that'd be terribly misremembering the whole of Sokka's character. And when we remember the whole of Sokka's character, we can recognise that the sexism is not a necessity for his growth.
He still learns to grow into understanding what a real leader and protector means. As well as learning to play to his strengths, that being cleverness (The whole reason he gets the mark of the wise), rather than trying to be what everyone expects him to be.
The whole show doesn't all the sudden fall apart because he isn't downplaying women anymore lol.
@@Sky-Of-Amethyst Well I think as well that this "macho" guy that he kinda was in the beginning is a important part of his character. And he's changing after a while, same like all the other characters. And that they cancelled this part completely makes him to me less sokka. Same with Aang or Katara or nearly all of them. Aang was a playfull kid in the first episode of the original, that just wanted to play didn't listen so much, I mean, of course, he was a kid - also they cancelled that. Katara in the liveaction is way too less katara: shes not jealous that the kids in the kyoshi island paid more attention to Aang or that Aang was better in waterbending than her ... all these things make a character.
@@Sky-Of-Amethystexcept this is part of a bigger web on why this live action is ass. they have the whole show already made they have great visuals, but its still bad. did netfix not realize how beloved the one piece live action was because they stuck to the characters and mostly to the story line?
@@Sky-Of-Amethyst that was his arc in book 1
@@Sky-Of-Amethystwasn’t the whole of his character but watching the live action I’m realizing how IMPORTANT It was. Now Sokka is pretty bleh and bland. He’s brave, mildly funny and not much else going on. There is going to be no arc here, just a simplistic shade level version of the once witty Sokka.
The reason why One Piece live action worked is that people forget that the original manga creator of the series was involved with the project. While Avatar failed because the original creators of the animated series left the project and instead we got another live action mess.
I can count on one hand how many episodes of the cartoon I’ve watched so maybe that’s why I could actually enjoy this show. I guess now I know how it feels as a Halo fan not really liking the TV show but people who never played Halo enjoyed the show.
One piece live action didn't work. It was also trash
You don't need the original creator. You literally have the show already made in front of you to use. The issue is the producers and writers are woke DEI hires. They have zero talent.
@@silverwolf6866 No duh. But that's why the original Avatar TLA creators left. They knew something was sus about the live action remake and since they weren't allowed to do anything with the project, they just got up and left. And I can't say I blame them.
I've watched the animated show dozens upon dozens of times. I watch it to go to sleep and I still liked the live action. Everybody just wants something to Hate even if there little reason to.
remember one piece wasn't a faithful adaptation until Oda told them to re-shoot and rewrite scripts because he didn't like them or just outright bad.
I didn't know that 😭
@@mateigabrielzaharia4842 Because that didn't happened...Oda is just a marketing piece.
@@azumag4432 How did you know that didn't happen? It was said and referenced multiple times (in interviews) even by the showrunners who are big fans... but never did I hear anything about it being fake for a 'marketing piece'. Still... if it was a marketing piece... OH BOY DID IT WORK WONDERS FOR THE SHOW. Live action ATLA could have taken notes and made a fake marketing piece too about it's original creators having a hand on the live action.

Source? Just wanna check because this channel thrives on making shit up and running with it
I found myself skipping a few of the scenes and monologues because sheesh, they were more on the nose than Miami in the 80s
Imagine having source material that is already voiced and animated so its easy to bring to life...and still this
Exactly 😂
The worst part is
Both shows had roughly 8h in their first season. They could LITERALLY just take the original line by line
Nah bro. It's anything but easy. You have many more options for representing things within drawn 2D anime than if you make a 3D film adaptation. Unfortunately, most of the comments show that many people have no idea how difficult it is to combine CGI with real scenarios. And it's logical that they changed the story because of the shorter time, and of course opinions are divided among people who, after 20 years of habit, suddenly get a new interpretation.
Please don't get me wrong - I'm a huge fan of the original and don't understand some aspects (for example Bumi wtf) but anyone who claims that the Netflix adaptation is s*** is, in my opinion, wrong, and is not able to get used to the "new version" - precisely because it is something different. @thejessegrant It's not meant to be personal, but you could approach the matter a little more objectively.
@@13AndreFalcao666 Wtf why? I mean wouldn't it be boring if its just the original?
@@lukasNNNthey could take back like 22 minutes from the great divide and probably another 10 minutes or so filler funless physical comedy moments, and stick some good dialogue there.
instead, they tried to bring iconic moments from the original without the propper build up.
There is plenty to improve in the original - and the series did none of it
What the FUCK were they smoking when they made the cave episode, dear god, what was wrong with the crystals being the secret, why the weirdly aggressive badgermole, why the esoteric bullshit with badgermoles being aBLe tO fEeL LoVE aNd eMoTiOnS?!?!??
I think they just added that because they needed to insert dialog between Sokka and Kitara somewhere in the scenes. I did like that animals feel love and emotions, may be there is a reason to show that because that's how some benders got their bending from animals like the turtle giving bending powers to first Avatar. However, I didn't understand why they had to change the story about Bumi wanting to see Avatar state and distort logic. Like literally in start they made Aang fly, if he could do that then he could fly when he was captured.
Changes for the sake of changes, that serve no purpose at all, will ALWAYS ruin adaptations.
Aang accidentally taking Sakka and Katara into the spirit world… WHY? The owl being there…WHY? Princess Yue being there in her dreams & being a knowledge seeker Fox…WHY? Iroh killing Zao instead of the ocean spirit…Why?
They served absolutely zero purpose and absolutely did not need to be changed.
They’re still connected to the spirits. Owl, Yue, Iroh, and it made sense tbh.
@@davidbakke9293 No, it made no sense at all, since none of it happened in the original show. If they’re going THAT route, then it just needs to be a different story all together, or be given a different name with a disclaimer that it’s only BASED ON the original show.
"Adaptation refers to the process of adjusting to new conditions or changes in one's environment. In a broader sense, it can also refer to the modification of something to suit a different purpose or context. In the context of literature, film, or other media, adaptation specifically refers to the creation of a new version of a work (such as a book, play, or movie) that is based on an existing work, often with modifications to fit the new medium or audience." You came to the show already disappointed because you thought adaptation is different but the same?
@@iamart8751 No. I was really excited & had really high hopes actually. I was just disappointed that they made so many completely unnecessary changes, just for the sake of making changes.
There was absolutely no reason to change the unfolding of events so drastically.
Why did they feel the need to put Jet and the FFs, the mechanist & son, plus Zuko and Iroh ALL in OmaShu? There was ZERO reason for that. I also don’t wanna hear “limited time”, because the run time of the show is actually around 20 minutes LONGER than the length of the combined episodes from book one.
When you make changes that if taken out, don’t effect the outcome from the original, then they’re not needed.
I stopped watching at episode 1 since it was so cringe and trashy. Iroh killing Zao is the worst thing they could do for his character as we know Iroh to be full of wisdom and compassion. Live-action remakes are garbage and should be treated non-cannon.
The way I see it, this show is for people that "kinda" liked the original but get hung up on the fact that it is a "kids show" because they don't respect animation as a medium. Making a live action legitimizes it for them.
For new people, I don't think this is a good introduction to the world of atla. The storyline is a convoluted mess from trying to merge so many things together (I'm confused why they also added season 2 stuff), and the character development is either not there or in the form of exposition dumps. Everything has to be spelled out. There's barely any subtlety left.
Some changes are also.. just weird? They made Sokka less biased against women, but they made Suki fall for him after seeing him shirtless once? How is that more progressive?
Yeah the whole Sokka and Suki part was hard to watch also his bias towards women was a lesson learned as he got humbled and properly trained with everyone in the full attire they missed the point of character development 😫 show has been a real let down
Not true I am a anime fan have been for years and I seen the original series so many times and I think they did a really good job can I ask you a question because you say they change it so much and they really didn’t can you tell me what live action follow the original 100% all the way not one and just because you didn’t see some of your favorite parts and try to say the acting was bad and it really wasn’t the show is bad now that’s 🧢 bro
I agree 100%. This show is for superficial people, who don't love the original show. They can't even see how the characters were deprived of their personalities, so why would they care?
New people are not going to understand the show, because of the fast pacing.
@@randyallen1965 you may love anime, but you don't love the characters. The fact that you don't notice how they changed these children's whole personalities shows it. I didn't want the live action to copy anything, but to stay true to heart of the show, which is the character's personalities. I would have loved to see entirely different adventures, but with the exact same people. I don't want a feminist Sokka, I don't want a creepy Suki, I don't want a Mary Sue Katara who smh believes she's a warrior, because she says so and doesn't need a teacher to learn water bending, etc.
It's progressive when women do it
I think having Katara watch her mother be brutally murdered by a fire bender right in front of her only to have her not mention it at all is so…. GrEAt

@@eggmeister6641 I enjoy what I enjoy, don't need incels to reinforce my opinions, what dude said is objectively wrong
Maybe it’s just me but this remark is so boring. They just changed the nature of the characters and made them somehow somewhere between trying to be serious and trying to be kids. And in result there is nothing interesting anymore about the characters. 😢
I think critics are being too harsh. I loved it. I dont desire perfection. Just a breath of fresh air. Thats what this was. I felt like a kid again.
The biggest problem with the show for me other than the writing was the shift in character from the animated show, specifically Zuko. In the animated show, he is young and immature but he was still scary and threatening at the same time. He had a chip on his shoulder and his actions reflected that. He was also very harsh to Iroh for most of the show, until he realized his mistakes later on. In this live action show, he is immature to the point where his character is just obnoxious, and not once did I feel that anyone should be threatened or afraid of him. He was also very kind to Iroh in many moments, which makes me wonder how he’s supposed to grow as a character in that regard. I also felt that Azula almost had the personality Zuko should have had, since all she was trying to do was earn her father’s approval, when she shouldn’t need it at all.
there's something off or missing in ALL of the characterizations in this adaptation. when you strip them to their core almost none of them are accurate.
bruh, theres many ways he can grow in that regard
@@_M.... Agreed! Zuko was just the most disappointing to me, he doesn’t have the rage and depth that you’d expect. All characters were pretty inaccurate though.
@@gintoki_sakata__ I respectfully disagree. The way he acts towards Iroh now is how he acted after all the amazing character development over all three seasons of the original. Their relationship was pretty based on Zuko saying cruel things and being dismissive of Iroh, not realizing or caring about what he said to him since he only cared about capturing Aang and everything and everyone were merely obstacles to him, including his uncle. Iroh was a great character because he understood Zuko’s true heart and did his best to not react to his outbursts, even though it’s shown that it did make him sad. That whole dynamic is missing from this new show. Zuko is obsessed with restoring his honor, and then later when he betrays Iroh, he sees himself as irredeemable, but when he’s already an empathetic character, you can’t really do that with him.
My gripe is with how badly they made azula. Not only is the acting flat, she looks nothing like our princess azula. And we pose to believe zuko going to date the unit mai???????😂😂😂😂😂 he be really running half way around the world to get away
I think it was decent, but I needed to feel more of a bond with the gang. Was there a single scene of them just hanging out? Just living in the moment together? I’ll need to rewatch it.
Yeah for like 10 minutes total when they were riding on appa. İt was all totally rushed
they don't show any bond with one another and suddenly they call themselves team avatar for no reason
Decent is a strong word
They ruined the reveal of having him find out about the attack on the southern air temple by telling him beforehand. Also him knowing about the fire nation war reveal was ruined. The slow build of Katara suspecting that he is the avatar. His fun loving nature stripped away what was the basis of the show.
Facts, I didn’t like how they changed the tone. I think they should have left it more playfulness & more child like nature like the show. I felt like the tone was a bit Lord of rings, I feel like they should have left that child naivety tone there.
I don’t mind the more gritty tone overall. I like the emphasis on what war has done to people. But they definitely should’ve retained Ang’s fun-going tendencies, especially since the adaptation itself emphasizes through dialogue Aang needing to face his responsibilities. But no, they removed the Penguin sledding thing, and instead had Aang express his fun side mainly through exposition. “I like playing airball and eat banana cakes.” They removed the “showing” but added “telling.”
Also, I think they could’ve made Grangran’s revelation of the war and attack work provided they change Ang’s reaction. Instead of having him accept it right away, have him be in denial. Then he decides to go to his home temple in hopes that Grangran’s story isn’t true.
Oh and also have Grangran’s show a bit more sensitivity or hesitance when dropping that giant truth bomb on Aang maybe? Just sayin.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤝🏻
Well actually even in the show aang was told slightly before, but aang just said "The only way you could go to the air temples is with an air bison. I doubt the fire nation has any air bison"
I just dont get it.They have the money. They have a big money.Instead of putting this money for CGI , why dont they hire better directors , righters , actors , camera operators and so on ?.Why do they spent 99% money on bad CGI effects , instead of anything else ?.I rather see a great looking CGI for 3 sec in the all episode , then this !
No, the actors ABSOLUTELY were part of the problem. Regardless of the lines they were given, they either over-acted or under-acted. Terrible casting aside from physical appearance.
Katara was the worst in my opinion like her acting was almost as bad as the room💀
Zuko was ok he really did give me the same vibe as in the animated show
Honestly, like and I’m a little disappointed because the cartoon Aang is so lovable and charming right out the gate, he’s adorable. This actor is definitely adorable, but I cannot stand his acting. The direction given was trash. I can constantly see the wheels turning in his head trying to act ..and he’s very precocious in a way that’s a bit annoying.
It's not that bad as its own show at all. It's just us og fans having biased comparisons, but my parents and some friends who never seen the cartoon, really love it. I have to agree with show not tell, but wasn't the cartoon having some telling as well? Some criticisms such as this one are just full of hate and disappointment to reveal every nitpicked details. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not that horrible either. Lastly, it's an adaptation (not a remake) and they have been telling it from the start that there'll be changes. Also, the og creators left because they wanted more changes (surprised?), and Netflix wanted it to be more faithful despite their own changes. Most people don't know that Aaron Ehasz was the real creative force behind the cartoon, and the og creators approved that Shyamalan garbage and even created that woke Korra. If you want a better review, go watch "The Sword and the Pen Reflections" channel. She made some unbiased/objective in depth review of this show.
The cartoon never once had Aang look in the camera and tell us he likes eating banana cakes, playing airball and hanging out with his friends. It SHOWED us that. Even the original trusted its audience more than this live-action. This is not professional writing. My developmental editor would chew me out for writing like this, lol.
Also, Korra wasn't "woke," whatever that means this week. It said fighting oppression was bad, had the main male lead act like an asshole and get away with it and treated domestic abuse as a joke. It all disrespected the non-Western world-building by Westernizing things in a way that made no sense. The series was just bad. Having a female lead doesn't automatically make something "woke."
@@EliasJWhite Like I said, it was not perfect. And like I said, we tend to compare it with the source material. Sorry if the show wasn't that good to you. I hope you'll succeed on your career ✌️
@@mnmg I mean, I think it's only natural to compare the adaptation to what it's adapting. But anyway, thank you. 🙂
One Piece remake was worthwhike because it cut a lot of the fat from the story and made several characters more nuanced and even more broadly likable. The ATLA remake did the EXACT opposite
I agree with your opinions.
Bad writing, rushed all season 1 into 8 hours, big character development changes, big cultural changes to be woke or inclusive, azula and her friends dont look like cunning fighters they look like fat spoiled royalty. The OG creators leaving the project said it all.
TBF season 1 is 6 hours and 40 minutes long in the original show so I'm not sure how they failed to squeeze it in so badly

Wow did not know that. Makes it even more depressing
They went woke and are gonna go broke💯almost evey addition ive seen them add is extra woke concepts and dialogue
Omg the woman army stare in the finale was So d*nm cringe 🤦🏽♂️
I'm not really seeing the wokeness part, their personalities were too bland to give off that message or any significant message. Just another remake that was poorly done in comparison to the original and lack of character development. They most definitely rushed it and skipped over some important and pivotal parts. They changed the entire personality. I honestly wish they would have just made a series about a past Avatar like Roku maybe since they were so obsessed with backstories instead of altering and disrespecting our memory of the original show.
The problem seems to be that a lot of new writers 1. seem determined to leave their own special mark on a story they're adapting, who knows maybe to stand out in the industry, and 2. either have never heard of basic writing rules, or think they're making some kind of statement by actively refusing to follow them.
I think it’s simpler than that. Nerds used to write these stories and made them cool. Then once the movie industry saw the market for cool stuff, basic people started getting to write them.
The new writers insert their feminist D.E.I bs in everything
Its woke. Its garbo. 😂 simply put
Is there a season 2?
What happens when the avatar actor gets older, hits puberty, gets taller, etc
I've already noticed in a few scenes where they added audio for him in post (blue spirit episode), and his voice completely changed. Watch the interviews and compare his voice to the show, it's night and day. Kid hit puberty HARD.
There’s 3 seasons
I assume that's why the comet gets very little mention. Letting Aang spend like a year in the North so he and Katara can learn waterbending and justify the actors ageing up would make that work. It's somewhat annoying being innaccurate, but Katara always picked up waterbending too fast when she only ever had like 2 or 3 weeks to learn and the reason for that was the time crunch the original show imposed on itself by introducing Sozin's Comet in Book 1. And in animation you don't have to worry about your drawings hitting puberty. So despite a lot of the changes I'm hearing about really pissing me off, if they extend the timeline of the show's canon, that would actually be a good move.
@@wafflingmean4477but if that’s the case won’t ang master all the elements earlier since he has the time. The show worked cause of the agency . They made to travel and move as fast as possible beacuse ang has to save the world if he was multiple years to master the elements there’s no stopping him from going to the fire lord and beating him before the comet starts. Remember ang never masters any of the elements he just learns the basics.

AtLA Movie = PAINFULL !
AtLA Netflix = CRINGE !
It all just makes me realise how incredible the writing was in the original. Not just the dialog but the symbolism and subtle nuances that mean you can watch the show multiple times and still discover new things. Take Fire Lord Ozai for example, he is referred to in the first two seasons but we only ever see him from a distance or behind a wall of flames. He is built up as such an ominous and intimidating figure, only to have your expectation completely subverted in the beginning of season three when we finally see him and he just looks like a normal person. Seriously you could write an essay on this stuff versus "Jet, you're not a good guy, you're a bad guy."
I had the same thought about Ozai when I recently rewatched the entire run. It's an excellent subversion.
Yess I was like why spoil it that takes away the mystery literally I kept falling asleep watching

Whoever writes for Netflix’ original series’ needs to be let go because I tell you, I have never once watched a single episode of an Netflix original series simply because I can tell just by the descriptions and thumbnails that they’re all filled with the same horribly cliche writing and dialogue.
In all honesty the dialogue sounds like it was written by Chat GPT. I'm 95% sure that the writers just plugged in some prompts, got Chat GPT to write a dialogue for each episode and then just reviewed and corrected some pieces. The acting was also terrible, and the plot deviations are a disgrace to the original animated series. Ruined characters like Iroh and Roku... This live action was such a disappointment... Honestly, people enjoy this garbage because they have gotten so used to streaming services shoving complete shit down their throats that they rejoice just getting strawberry flavored SHIT versus the vanilla flavored shit.

The point of ADAPTING any story to live action is to see it unfold in an environment of reality. NOT to tell a different story. NOT to "fix" the original. NOT to "add your own spin on it".
But it's to make the dream seem that much more real and tangible for the people, who want it closer.
This notion is very basic and human, and should immediately be understood by anyone, who ever dreamed.
Alas, there's still idiots out there, asking the question of "why make a live action remake if the story's already been told?"
Get a clue.
I enjoyed the show for what it was. Yes, the cartoon is better - no way to improve that; it's magical, and we all know that. We could not expect a shot-by-shot remake - why would anyone want that? It was way better than previous Netflix recreations, and I appreciate that they seem to be making better content than of late. Iroh was well-acted. Kehosi warriors, though short, were great. The low point for me was Bumi; they should have had an older actor.
The reason why One Piece makes sense is because it had a huge untaped market of people who've been told it was awesome but then looked at the 1000+ episodes and said nah, i'm good. On the other hand, Avatar: the last airbender is a short 3 season story with no need to be retold.
Agreed
It’s ok just too serious compared to the original show and a lot better than the 2010 film.
Saying somethings better than the 2010 movie is like saying
Yeah, I don't mind being kicked in the nuts cause it beats chewing glass.
It's reviews like this that make me ask, why does any creator or filmmaker try with these IPs, the audience is 90% toxic children who hate almost everything that isn't 1000% what they expected. It's like trying to please spoiled toddlers throwing tantrums FFS
The show IS GOOD accept it and quit hating everything FFS
Exactly. All the hate that was hurled at the show even before it came out made me realize that. No matter what they did, they would always be people that convince themselves to hate it just bc its different
So basically, the people with the real talents (sets, dresses, costumes, effects) did a really great job and the hack writers are the ones who fucked it up.
Pretty much
Producers have final say over the scripts, the writing team is usually understaffed and at the mercy of usually stupid producers and directors.
Hate to be the one to say it, but when all major anime live actions have been made, they are definitely going to diversify sitcoms like F.R.I.E.N.D.S! 😭

Both u guys don't understand emotion, meaning of the messages, characters original acting. For example they made the earth king act like an idiot and mean with useless test or challenges. Compared to the original. There's too much to write it out if you guys still don't get it I can't help lol. But I do admit the best started on blue spirit episode and on it was good and did enjoy it anything before was trash. I hope they keep the momentum going with that second section in mind and forget about trying to make anything like the begining.
I love it
it's not bad, it's mediocre. it hardly honored the source material, made the characters weak and somehow butchers the things that made the animated version great in the first place. They showed that they can make and honor the source material by making one piece, which makes both old and new fans like it. But this makes even new ATLA watchers second guess themselves.
@nope4430 I've finished it and really enjoyed it. I've watched both the cartoon and the show and yall are being way to critical. The fact that it was green lit for the next 2 seasons and even the user reviews are positive, leads me to believe your view is in the minority. It would have had to had some good numbers to have netflix renew the show. It's funny because when I first watched it when it came out my first thought was "this is great" then I went online and every youtuber was shitting on it which in my opinion didn't make sense, especially when I was looking at user reviews saying how good it was. Sounds like they're just using rage bait for clicks.
I like the show, but they srsly should have given it 10-12 episodes, there is absolulty no breathingroom for characterdevelopment or even stuff like the sense of an adventure and traveling the world with your friends (you barely see Aang train his water-bending at all). The show feels more like a openworld-game where you ignore the openworld and just use fastravel to get from plotpoint to plotpoint. I like the show overall, but season 2 really needs more episodes... 8 / 10 for me
Agreed.

One Piece makes sense as the episode count of the anime is daunting needless to say and for someone wanting to see if that anime is worth checking out, the live action is a good kick starter making some wanting to see the original source material.
The Last Airbender Netflix adaptation is pointless though. I gave up a few epidsodes in. The dialogue is just garbage. Like you said- it is all tell instead of show and comes off flat. All the beautiful subtlety of the original is lost and changing some character motivations (like Aang just flying away to clear his mind instead of cowardly running away in the storm- it strips him of a moving and powerful character arch and instead comes off as "oopsie- the Avatar was missing because he needed to go think" instead of it being about a scared little kid who made a terrible selfishly driven decision and learned to reconcile with it). This show just felt hollow and bland. It didn't do enough different to justify its existence but also where it did deviate was not executed that well either. On a positive it isn't as bad as M.Night's adaptation, but that isn't a hard bar to pass. Overall this Netflix adaptation is a strong "meh..." for me
They removed sokka's machismo.
Which is funny because overcoming that is HIS FIRST BASIC ARC.
Which means when he comes to suki to talk training and she's mean to him it just comes off as either
A) she's needlessly mean and insensitive
Or
B) she's trying to flirt, but has autism.
And the show wrecks EVERY arc doing things like that
ehh I think it was more a fate thing the way they made aang clear his head instead of running away, gyasto later in the show tells him it was not his fault he just would of died like the rest of them
I enjoyed it. Rough on the edges but it has great potential. You're just hating to get views.
I never watched the anime but I couldn't agree more. It was beyond boring with simplistic dialogue. I can't understand how people are loving this, glad to find a place where others have common damn sense.
The worst thing above all in my opinion about this live adaptation is, how badly they tried to adapt it. It felt like the producers have no soul and this is the product they offer when they cant be touched by the original story, this is what you get.
Every director will put a twisted to their own franchise (movie) doesn't matter who it is. This is why every Godzilla remakes movies is different. Plus, Netflix didn't team up with Nickelodeon (orignal writter and makers) to produce this project. I give it 7 out 10, 7 because the director pretty much strays away from the characters in the animation.
@solomonking5097 Netflix did partner with Nickelodeon, and the original creators, Bryan and Michael, were brought on as executive producers. These guys worked for two years writing a script and creating the vision that they wanted for the live action. But, due to creative differences they left and I don't blame them. They did say in their open exiting letter to the fandom, that wheather this show is good or bad it was never the version they intended to make.
Now we know that there is a script in existence envisioned by the original creators ready for live action adaptation, I do hope that one day they get the opportunity to make their live action version a reality because they deserved it.
Saying this show is just a money grab is getting a little old. If you live in America you should already have the understanding that nowadays things being made is more about profits (our nation's economic system) and less about quality (which is now outsourced).
What's the point of these live-action remakes? We now have the technology to make it look more realistic then ever before. It's not about the storyline, but if it's a good story we all want to experience it again in a different way, even if it's not as good, it expands our imagination so much more. Everyone wants to see a Silmarillion series, but who really thinks one can be made that's better than the book, or the LotR movies for that matter, so we've been given The Rings of Power.
People say these renditions take away from the original, but I think the audience they draw outweighs that. Just as it's highly doubtful people would pickup and actually read The Silmarillion if it weren't for the Amazon series, I think the same could be said about the kids in this generation and generations to come not watching the animated Avatar show if it wasn't for this Netflix series.
Honestly it isnt even that bad and genuinely enjoyable as much as some actors dont manage to represent they're characters well

"Show don't tell" is a good rule - except if we are talking about horror movies- often the villain not shown is more effective than the one that is.
I think you're missing the point of that phrase. It's not about showing a character on screen. Show don't tell absolutely applies to horror as well. For example, don't have only descriptions of the aftermath of a strange murder and never have it come up again, just show the audience the murder scene. That's how you do it. Show don't tell does NOT mean that you have to reveal what the monster looks like in the first scene or anything.
@@viking-astronaut You are correct!
God, they made sokka not sexist for the kyoshi island episode, which totally undermines the whole point of his development. If he isn’t sexist, how is he embarrassed and proven wrong by suki into being a morally good person and developing the ability to not underestimate others?
Look the thing is, as a VFX artist myself I was so thrilled to see all of the epic effects and fights they couldve easily cut out but didnt -the fights were amazing and I dont think theyre getting as much credit as they should. (Tho appa and momo were really weird looking lmao)
What i didnt like is that they tried to cram everything in 8 episodes just to mention every single story line that was in the original series.
They couldve easily just not mentioned the secret tunnel for example, koh or the panda spirit wasnt that much of a big part in the original series anyway either, they shouldve just left these topics out and elaborated more on the characters relationships or even aangs water bending itself!
Like wasnt book 1 supposed to be the season where aang learns waterbending? Yet we didnt see him bend or practice it once, which was really weird.
I dont like how everyone is bashing the series, yes a lot of things were off but there were a lot of good things too and with all the hate its getting i fear that season 2 might be cancelled and that would really be a shame.
We shouldn’t expect things to feel the same way as they do when we watch the original series, its literally our childhood and connected to so many nostalgic feelings that no matter how well the live action would be it could never truly reach!
No Aang didn’t learn waterbending yet until book 2
Visually it was great. The actors did the best they could.
But the writing was just awful… just awful
Did it have it's issues, most definitely. They should have kept it closer to the original for sure, and some of the actor choices are questionable imo. That being said as far as live action adaptations of cartoons it was better than most. Sometimes though I think content creators nitpick on stuff for content. It's really not as bad as you or nerdrotic are making it out to be.
The film isn’t the original 😂😂😂😂
I would say it's good
It’s meh
I made it like 20 minutes before I turned it off. I love the original show, but I couldn't care at all about this.
The moment when Iroh was grieving his sons death, the soldier boy sound track in the background made me tear up :')
The main problem I have with this series is tht they tried to merge everything together, adding season 2 stuffs but left out a big chunk of aang and katara growth together, and tht being aang was able to water bend from the getgo. And katara being jealous of him at waterbendkng to them learning from pakku tgt, but in the series aang didn’t actually waterbend. And they straight up used kyoshi in the early episodes in all 4 elements, basically watered down the epicness of being able to bend all 4. We didn’t get to see tht in a fight not until season 3. But the plus points are when aang met gyatso , there’s some sort of closure there. And also I liked the brutality of people being burnt to death but maybe a bit too much. It’s terrifying seeing tht.
The reason One Piece live action worked was because it was very close to the original but also cut out all the over the top anime stuff like charging attacks and extremely loud screeching. It allowed an audience of non-anime fans access to the story without having to drudge through the anime tropes.
It was the acting for me. I've seen better acting in High School plays. Seriously, pick any random scene with Katarra...it's like her facials muscles don't even work.
Why is Aang flying? Why is the water tribe village bigger than the original? Why is Zukos scar look like blush on his face, why is uncle iroh serious? Why did they show the airbender genocide? Why is gran gran so ominous? Why are the actors mid?

You need to understand that some changes would of course take place. Doing it 10000% exactly like the og would have been terrible. No real person speaks and acts like they do (in the og) and now that we've got a live action, some realistic and relatableness needs to happen. So keeping that in mind I think the Netflix Avatar was great. They still got the characters down pretty well while being realistic. Crying over the fact that it wasn't as good or better than your childhood nostalgia master piece of a series, is like complaining about your new partner after your old husband/ wife died because the new one isn't an exact copy of what you used to have xd. Be like water and except change :))
I would be okay with some things changing story wise, but every change with only one exception, actively went counter to the characters that it affected. the only exception was how Zuko was treated after he returned and his crew learnt that he had saved them years ago. The changes to boomie were especially infuriating to me, his character in the live action completely contradicts what makes a strong earth bender, which is essentially the opposite of Aang, which is such a large story beat later. In the live action he lacks all patience, is incredibly bitter at Aang disappearing and gives aang challenges that serve no purpose because he was too impatient and blurted out his name early on. His reintroduction to Aang is supposed to teach Aang so many lessons.
Binged the whole season, I found it pretty enjoyable loved Admiral Zhao, sooo good

@@Bunny11344 how could you hate james' avatar?
I get why some people are upset about the live action not being exactly like the cartoon version. I was confused at first on why they changed up some stories and conjoined episodes into fewer episodes, but it was kinda needed. Like how Aang went to Kyoshi island to talk to Avatar Kyoshi when in the cartoon version, that’s not why they went there. Or like how Katara got the water bending scroll from her gran gran instead of stealing it from the pirates and being chased by them. Or the whole reason why Aang went to talk to Avatar Roku in the fire temple about the comet, but that didn’t happen. But one thing still led to another actual event that happened in the show so I can understand why they did that so I’m not too upset about it.
That’s also another thing about live action. If they copied exactly like how it is in the cartoon version, (verbatim and acting) the episodes would just be too short and there’s not a whole lot of context. It wouldn’t really seem right for live action.
It’s still A LOT better than the 2010 live action version so I’ll give them that. The bending, the martial arts, everything is on point.
I've grown to hate the overly color-graded and CGI look Hollywood has factorized. Weirdly enough this is the only good thing about this remake imo. The world looks epic. But besides that, the actual substance is just a mere fart of the original.
