  • Netflix released Avatar: The Last Airbender and so far it has received mixed reviews, and after watching Avatar The Last Airbender myself I can see why, as in this review of Netflix's Avatar I go over everything wrong with this series from terrible CGI to horrendous dialogue coupled with boring and bland performances by the actors. Overall Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is far from the quality of the original.

One thing the show's creators said that stood out to me was they said sokka was a "sexist" in the original so they toned him down. Being a prick was part of sokka's character in the original. Also when the kiyoshi warriors quickly put him in his place it is revealed the tough guy thing was an act deep down he feels useless because he isn't a bender like his sister or ang, he wasn't able to beat the firebenders that invaded his village and his father didn't take him to war with him. Sokka learns to let go of ego and ask the kiyoshi warriors for training. As they train together both develop respect for each other. Sokka's growth wouldn't happen without the "sexism" But modern writers are too scared to take risks because of backlash. They try not to offend anyone (unless it's straight men ofcourse)

Are you honestly going to argue that Sokka's entire character was just sexism and learning to out grow sexism? Cause I think that'd be terribly misremembering the whole of Sokka's character. And when we remember the whole of Sokka's character, we can recognise that the sexism is not a necessity for his growth.
He still learns to grow into understanding what a real leader and protector means. As well as learning to play to his strengths, that being cleverness (The whole reason he gets the mark of the wise), rather than trying to be what everyone expects him to be.
The whole show doesn't all the sudden fall apart because he isn't downplaying women anymore lol.

@@Sky-Of-Amethyst Well I think as well that this "macho" guy that he kinda was in the beginning is a important part of his character. And he's changing after a while, same like all the other characters. And that they cancelled this part completely makes him to me less sokka. Same with Aang or Katara or nearly all of them. Aang was a playfull kid in the first episode of the original, that just wanted to play didn't listen so much, I mean, of course, he was a kid - also they cancelled that. Katara in the liveaction is way too less katara: shes not jealous that the kids in the kyoshi island paid more attention to Aang or that Aang was better in waterbending than her ... all these things make a character.

The reason why One Piece live action worked is that people forget that the original manga creator of the series was involved with the project. While Avatar failed because the original creators of the animated series left the project and instead we got another live action mess.

Nah bro. It's anything but easy. You have many more options for representing things within drawn 2D anime than if you make a 3D film adaptation. Unfortunately, most of the comments show that many people have no idea how difficult it is to combine CGI with real scenarios. And it's logical that they changed the story because of the shorter time, and of course opinions are divided among people who, after 20 years of habit, suddenly get a new interpretation.
Please don't get me wrong - I'm a huge fan of the original and don't understand some aspects (for example Bumi wtf) but anyone who claims that the Netflix adaptation is s*** is, in my opinion, wrong, and is not able to get used to the "new version" - precisely because it is something different. @thejessegrant It's not meant to be personal, but you could approach the matter a little more objectively.

I think they just added that because they needed to insert dialog between Sokka and Kitara somewhere in the scenes. I did like that animals feel love and emotions, may be there is a reason to show that because that's how some benders got their bending from animals like the turtle giving bending powers to first Avatar. However, I didn't understand why they had to change the story about Bumi wanting to see Avatar state and distort logic. Like literally in start they made Aang fly, if he could do that then he could fly when he was captured.

The way I see it, this show is for people that "kinda" liked the original but get hung up on the fact that it is a "kids show" because they don't respect animation as a medium. Making a live action legitimizes it for them.
For new people, I don't think this is a good introduction to the world of atla. The storyline is a convoluted mess from trying to merge so many things together (I'm confused why they also added season 2 stuff), and the character development is either not there or in the form of exposition dumps. Everything has to be spelled out. There's barely any subtlety left.

The biggest problem with the show for me other than the writing was the shift in character from the animated show, specifically Zuko. In the animated show, he is young and immature but he was still scary and threatening at the same time. He had a chip on his shoulder and his actions reflected that. He was also very harsh to Iroh for most of the show, until he realized his mistakes later on. In this live action show, he is immature to the point where his character is just obnoxious, and not once did I feel that anyone should be threatened or afraid of him. He was also very kind to Iroh in many moments, which makes me wonder how he’s supposed to grow as a character in that regard. I also felt that Azula almost had the personality Zuko should have had, since all she was trying to do was earn her father’s approval, when she shouldn’t need it at all.

@@gintoki_sakata__ I respectfully disagree. The way he acts towards Iroh now is how he acted after all the amazing character development over all three seasons of the original. Their relationship was pretty based on Zuko saying cruel things and being dismissive of Iroh, not realizing or caring about what he said to him since he only cared about capturing Aang and everything and everyone were merely obstacles to him, including his uncle. Iroh was a great character because he understood Zuko’s true heart and did his best to not react to his outbursts, even though it’s shown that it did make him sad. That whole dynamic is missing from this new show. Zuko is obsessed with restoring his honor, and then later when he betrays Iroh, he sees himself as irredeemable, but when he’s already an empathetic character, you can’t really do that with him.

I have to agree with show not tell, but wasn't the cartoon having some telling as well? Some criticisms such as this one are just full of hate and disappointment to reveal every nitpicked details. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not that horrible either. Lastly, it's an adaptation (not a remake) and they have been telling it from the start that there'll be changes. Also, the og creators left because they wanted more changes (surprised?), and Netflix wanted it to be more faithful despite their own changes. Most people don't know that Aaron Ehasz was the real creative force behind the cartoon, and the og creators approved that Shyamalan garbage and even created that woke Korra. I'm not really seeing the wokeness part, their personalities were too bland to give off that message or any significant message. Just another remake that was poorly done in comparison to the original and lack of character development. They most definitely rushed it and skipped over some important and pivotal parts. They changed the entire personality. I honestly wish they would have just made a series about a past Avatar like Roku maybe since they were so obsessed with backstories instead of altering and disrespecting our memory of the original show.

The problem seems to be that a lot of new writers 1. seem determined to leave their own special mark on a story they're adapting, who knows maybe to stand out in the industry, and 2. either have never heard of basic writing rules, or think they're making some kind of statement by actively refusing to follow them.

I assume that's why the comet gets very little mention. Letting Aang spend like a year in the North so he and Katara can learn waterbending and justify the actors ageing up would make that work. It's somewhat annoying being innaccurate, but Katara always picked up waterbending too fast when she only ever had like 2 or 3 weeks to learn and the reason for that was the time crunch the original show imposed on itself by introducing Sozin's Comet in Book 1. And in animation you don't have to worry about your drawings hitting puberty. So despite a lot of the changes I'm hearing about really pissing me off, if they extend the timeline of the show's canon, that would actually be a good move.

It all just makes me realise how incredible the writing was in the original. Not just the dialog but the symbolism and subtle nuances that mean you can watch the show multiple times and still discover new things. Take Fire Lord Ozai for example, he is referred to in the first two seasons but we only ever see him from a distance or behind a wall of flames. He is built up as such an ominous and intimidating figure, only to have your expectation completely subverted in the beginning of season three when we finally see him and he just looks like a normal person. Seriously you could write an essay on this stuff versus "Jet, you're not a good guy, you're a bad guy."

But it's to make the dream seem that much more real and tangible for the people, who want it closer.
This notion is very basic and human, and should immediately be understood by anyone, who ever dreamed.

And it’s 3 seasons with 25 min episodes. 💀it’s not that hard to make a good script and also add new things like the iron meeting the soldier was a good script etc but to complete change azula, ozai, sokka, suki, aang, and characters to the point that the develop nothing is jst a stupid take. Jet and zuko are the only ones they got right. And there is literally no suspense in the show at all when the show comes to the finale what characters will he bring back to fight? Sokka not being sexist complete threw out his character now he just had the whole daddy issue going. And aang doesn’t even have fun he is just sad all the time other than at kyoshi island. Iron barley even smiles. And Katara whole arc was basically cut out somehow she is teacher water bending to herself atp. It’s literally basically a empty script with wonderful visuals. No actual journey it just a linear script. And azula being in the first season makes no sense there is not even a real space for her in the story line atp she is just there. One Piece makes sense as the episode count of the anime is daunting needless to say and for someone wanting to see if that anime is worth checking out, the live action is a good kick starter making some wanting to see the original source material.
The Last Airbender Netflix adaptation is pointless though. I gave up a few epidsodes in. The dialogue is just garbage. Like you said- it is all tell instead of show and comes off flat. All the beautiful subtlety of the original is lost and changing some character motivations (like Aang just flying away to clear his mind instead of cowardly running away in the storm- it strips him of a moving and powerful character arch and instead comes off as "oopsie- the Avatar was missing because he needed to go think" instead of it being about a scared little kid who made a terrible selfishly driven decision and learned to reconcile with it). This show just felt hollow and bland. It didn't do enough different to justify its existence but also where it did deviate was not executed that well either. On a positive it isn't as bad as M.Night's adaptation, but that isn't a hard bar to pass. Overall this Netflix adaptation is a strong "meh..." for me

Every director will put a twisted to their own franchise (movie) doesn't matter who it is. This is why every Godzilla remakes movies is different. Plus, Netflix didn't team up with Nickelodeon (orignal writter and makers) to produce this project. I give it 7 out 10, 7 because the director pretty much strays away from the characters in the animation.

    • @dulala2564
      @dulala2564 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@solomonking5097 Netflix did partner with Nickelodeon, and the original creators, Bryan and Michael, were brought on as executive producers. These guys worked for two years writing a script and creating the vision that they wanted for the live action. But, due to creative differences they left and I don't blame them. They did say in their open exiting letter to the fandom, that wheather this show is good or bad it was never the version they intended to make.
Now we know that there is a script in existence envisioned by the original creators ready for live action adaptation, I do hope that one day they get the opportunity to make their live action version a reality because they deserved it.

Saying this show is just a money grab is getting a little old. If you live in America you should already have the understanding that nowadays things being made is more about profits (our nation's economic system) and less about quality (which is now outsourced).
What's the point of these live-action remakes? We now have the technology to make it look more realistic then ever before. It's not about the storyline, but if it's a good story we all want to experience it again in a different way, even if it's not as good, it expands our imagination so much more. Everyone wants to see a Silmarillion series, but who really thinks one can be made that's better than the book, or the LotR movies for that matter, so we've been given The Rings of Power.
People say these renditions take away from the original, but I think the audience they draw outweighs that. Just as it's highly doubtful people would pickup and actually read The Silmarillion if it weren't for the Amazon series, I think the same could be said about the kids in this generation and generations to come not watching the animated Avatar show if it wasn't for this Netflix series.

For example, don't have only descriptions of the aftermath of a strange murder and never have it come up again, just show the audience the murder scene. That's how you do it. What i didnt like is that they tried to cram everything in 8 episodes just to mention every single story line that was in the original series.
They couldve easily just not mentioned the secret tunnel for example, koh or the panda spirit wasnt that much of a big part in the original series anyway either, they shouldve just left these topics out and elaborated more on the characters relationships or even aangs water bending itself!
Like wasnt book 1 supposed to be the season where aang learns waterbending? Yet we didnt see him bend or practice it once, which was really weird.
I dont like how everyone is bashing the series, yes a lot of things were off but there were a lot of good things too and with all the hate its getting i fear that season 2 might be cancelled and that would really be a shame.

And katara being jealous of him at waterbendkng to them learning from pakku tgt, but in the series aang didn’t actually waterbend. And they straight up used kyoshi in the early episodes in all 4 elements, basically watered down the epicness of being able to bend all 4. We didn’t get to see tht in a fight not until season 3. But the plus points are when aang met gyatso , there’s some sort of closure there. And also I liked the brutality of people being burnt to death but maybe a bit too much. It’s terrifying seeing tht.

So keeping that in mind I think the Netflix Avatar was great. They still got the characters down pretty well while being realistic. Crying over the fact that it wasn't as good or better than your childhood nostalgia master piece of a series, is like complaining about your new partner after your old husband/ wife died because the new one isn't an exact copy of what you used to have xd. Be like water and except change :))

I would be okay with some things changing story wise, but every change with only one exception, actively went counter to the characters that it affected. the only exception was how Zuko was treated after he returned and his crew learnt that he had saved them years ago. The changes to boomie were especially infuriating to me, his character in the live action completely contradicts what makes a strong earth bender, which is essentially the opposite of Aang, which is such a large story beat later. In the live action he lacks all patience, is incredibly bitter at Aang disappearing and gives aang challenges that serve no purpose because he was too impatient and blurted out his name early on. His reintroduction to Aang is supposed to teach Aang so many lessons.

Who was in charge of casting? Because Azula, Mei. Katara, Zuko is just horrible. The Asian market has a lot of talent and this was the best the could come up with? Dafuq is this!!!!

I mean Zuko wasn't that bad. Sure, his appearence doesn't really resemble how people have always imagined Zuko, but his acting was beautiful.
I will not and have no reason to defend Azula and her gang tho, they were just objetively bad.. I mean I know that judging people for how they look is wrong but COME ON.

@@Kartlos1 his appearance could be overlooked if he embodied the same intense brooding that Zuko had. Zuko was a constant quiet storm, a ball of angst and angry. This guy just gave teenage petulance

Nickelodeon Firelord: Terrifying, imposing, can't miss em
Netflix Firelord: Old man who is shorter than everyone, has a weak voice and speaks softly. Also he is consistently poorly framed on-camera almost every-time he is on screen.

I get why some people are upset about the live action not being exactly like the cartoon version. I was confused at first on why they changed up some stories and conjoined episodes into fewer episodes, but it was kinda needed. Like how Aang went to Kyoshi island to talk to Avatar Kyoshi when in the cartoon version, that’s not why they went there. Or like how Katara got the water bending scroll from her gran gran instead of stealing it from the pirates and being chased by them. Or the whole reason why Aang went to talk to Avatar Roku in the fire temple about the comet, but that didn’t happen. But one thing still led to another actual event that happened in the show so I can understand why they did that so I’m not too upset about it.
That’s also another thing about live action. If they copied exactly like how it is in the cartoon version, (verbatim and acting) the episodes would just be too short and there’s not a whole lot of context. It wouldn’t really seem right for live action.
It’s still A LOT better than the 2010 live action version so I’ll give them that. The bending, the martial arts, everything is on point.

I've grown to hate the overly color-graded and CGI look Hollywood has factorized. Weirdly enough this is the only good thing about this remake imo. The world looks epic. But besides that, the actual substance is just a mere fart of the original.
