    Making kyoshi the main avatar in the live action instead of roku was really outraegous
    Roku being the main avatar guide to aang made the main conflict so much more engaging because he himself was part of the fire nation and had ties to the royal family , and his actions led to the 100 years War in the first place
    So his past mistakes served as wisdom for him to guide aang through the right path to fix his mistakes and end the War
    But with kyoshi , the "perfect" avatar , having more screentime and influence over aang , the avatar as a character feels so much more detached from the fire nation conflict , i love kyoshi but she had no business having this much influence on aang when roku , his direct predecessor was right there

    • @maarten1115
      @maarten1115 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +147

      I think it has to do with time constraints. They wanted to show Kyoshi because of fan interest, but they couldn't cram 2 avatars into the limited time they had. For some reason they decided to cut Roku instead on Kyoshi. Super weird given the reasons you already mentioned. It would be cool to see more about Kyoshi but it can't be at the expense of a far more relevant character.

    • @Lothiril
      @Lothiril 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

      But half of that is knowledge from later seasons. We don't know Roku had ties to the royal family in season 1, and we don't know about his connection to Sozin yet (who btw is responsible for the 100 years war, not Roku). I think using Kyoshi in the first season is not a bad idea if they want to show a few more previous Avatars, because they always have time to expand on Roku in the second or third season, when his story is actually told in greater detail and also becomes more relevant to the story.
      His main role in the first season was to warn Aang from the comet so that from then on Aang would be under pressure to learn bending the elements as fast es possible. They couldn't introduce that time limit due to the actors aging, but as a result it wasn't possible for Roku to address the comet and warn Aang about it. They can still do it for s2 or s3, now that both are greenlit and they can film it back-to-back.

      @@Lothiril the 100 year war is roku fault because as he said himself he knew what sozin was and what he wanted but he was too weak and spared him because there friendship. And roku being the mentor to aang from s1 makes more sense because the audience gets used ro seeing him to help aang, whenever aang is in trouble roku helps him, when aang needs knowledge roku helps him, when aang needs learn fire bending roku forces the fire teacher to help him, it puts in the audience mind that he is an avatar that is very interested in aang succeeding and as the story goes on we learn that the reason roku is so interested in aang succeeding is because he blames himself for the state the world in and wants aang ro fix it which he eventuallyapologized to aang for in the comics and accepts that he has his own ways of fixing problems. But kyoshi has no real connection to the current state of the world she is just an avatar from long ago basically serves as exposition since her presence doesn't really add anything more for the future of the series, the time they gave to kyoshi should have been used to develop roku especially because the series is so damn rushed like it needed 4 more episodes. Fun fact in book 1 water aang uses water bending 0 times

    • @johnalfred-vc1bd
      @johnalfred-vc1bd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      Even in the intro it was Kyoshi who was displayed using the four elements, they've done really because she's far more popular. Doesn't help that the scene was unbelievable too (bad cgi).

    • @DBT1007
      @DBT1007 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

      Also i hate how kyoshi can just go to the real world like that.
      Even avatar roku only can able to lend aang his power. Not go to real life. It's still aang but with roku power.
      And also, the time is short. Roku just help aang to go outside the temple. In real time, that probably took roku like.. 3 minutes maybe.
      Unlike kyoshi in netflix that be like.. maybe 20 minutes in real life. In flesh like kyoshi truly took over aang's body. Not spirit.

    Katara was straight up character assassinated. She went from being assertive, opinionated, and fiery to this bland, passive, going along for the ride character. She seems to have no interest in anything that’s happening. She barely stands up for herself or the injustices around her. Not nearly as much as the original did.
    Edit: to be clear none of this is hate towards the actress. I think she did a fine job with the writing and direction she was given. It was just really bad writing and direction.

    • @Fr0zenPeanut
      @Fr0zenPeanut 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +59

      Exactly, she needs to have some attitude, while also being kind and caring. The OG Katara is a complex and layered character; she's hopeful and inspiring, but has her flaws (e.g. she stole the scroll and got jealous when Aang picked up waterbending faster than her) while this Katara feels like a Mary Sue NPC.
      It's also weird how they made Sokka the more mature sibling now; I was really annoyed when he told Katara that she needed to grow up. It was the other way around in the original series, where he said Katara took on a lot of responsibility when they lost their mother, and that he only sees her face when he tries to remember their mother.
      Her acting like a mother of the group is also the reason why she got into arguments with Toph. The absence of Katara's core character traits means that the Netflix adaptation is probably not going to show any conflict between the girls, which also means that we won't get to see them bond after they resolve it and learn to understand each other better.

    The writers of the adaptation don't want their "good" characters to have any flaws. They actively removed all flaws from all members of team Avatar.
    Aang is no longer immature, or responsable from running away. He also never had to lie to his friends because he was afraid to lose them like in the episode "Bato of the watertribe".
    Katara is no longer bossy, or jealous of Aang learning faster than her. She didn't have to steal the scroll or didn't have to shut her mouth and swallow her pride to have Pakku teach waterbending to Aang.
    Sokka is no longer immature, sexist, insecure of himself and a bad fighter.

    It pisses me off that the one major thing we get to see of Hakoda is him being critical of Sokka. Sure it's just a small memory of him talking to someone in private, but when it's the one major thing we are shown we're naturally led to believe this is his true idea of his son.
    One of my favorite things about Hakoda is how he stands in stark contrast to Ozai as a father. Zuko has to beg to be let into a war meeting, and speaking out of turn in it gets him burned and banished with a task thought to be impossible just so Ozai can get him off his hair. When Sokka appears unexpectedly at the water tribe camp, people welcome him and notice how much he's grown, they lead him to his father's war meeting, and Hakoda himself stops EVERYTHING to stand up and embrace his son. Even when Sokka was a small kid Hakoda trusted him and told him what a man should be, entrusting him with protecting his tribe while also understanding he's just a child and should not be burdened more than he already is, and now that he's grown and experienced the world Hakoda sees him as the brave and capable warrior he has become, treating him like the rest of his men.
    He never saw his son as a failure or a disappointment, even in passing or as a joke. He knew his children both had strong spirits and incredible potential that he had to protect by keeping the fire nation away from their shores.

      Sokka is no longer immature, sexist, insecure of himself and a bad fighter.

      I've had an epiphany about writing recently that no one bothered to say in all the years I've been listening to people's hot takes about the process. Character flaws, are not only not just faults characters have, not only do they have to affect the story, but they are relative and somewhat arbitrary. In fact, a character's falt and strength can sometimes - even often - be the same.
      Today I was trying to figure out what Aang's main one was, and I couldn't put my finger on it, because he's immature, but it doesn't hinder his progress that often. So I felt stupid when I realized, duh, he ran away, because he wasn't ready. He disappeared for a whole century. It's more than understandable - but, it is a problem, and it effected the story. However Aang's refusal to kill is also part of this immaturity. It's naive for a child to think he can win a war, by toppling a dictator and not have to kill anybody. But is war and killing "mature"? Is that how we want to usher our character into adulthood? Bumi's character reflects this duality. He's over a hundred years old, but he maintains the curiosity, playfulness, and creativity of his youth, while imparting wise lessons and reconnecting with an old friend. Aang, Bumi, and to a lesser extent Iroh exist to say "don't forget your inner child, they're important"

      A show can cut between places between episodes and your brain fills in the. If the show did this, it would feel even more rushed.

    the craziest thing is that they had almost the same screen-time as the animated series. And they STILL make it FEEL RUSHED AF with less then HALF of the material, like wtf? They spent to much time boasting about their special effects and new materials that they destroyed the original plot, I understand wanting to add more to the story, but if you want to add to a story that is almost perfect and needs everything, then they should have added all the new plots as extra-time, like 12 episodes where 3-episodes-screen-worth-of-time were their new materials. Instead they sacrificed half of the absolutely mandatory plots in the original series for their half-baked-fanmade-stories. It also felt to me like they actively tried to give the kids actors as little screen time, lines, emotions as possible, especially the actors for team avatar, they were utterly disrespected like "you can't play this, anyways, we'll cover you guys with our expensive special-effects"

    3:46 yeah I totally agree. I’m really tired of the sentiment that all villains have to be either sympathetic or redeemable.
    Ozai was brought up during a war that was passed down from his grandfather to his father and then onto him and is about how much the purpose of the war has changed from Sozin’s twisted idea of sharing the fire nations prosperity with the rest of the world to now just a quest for power and dominance.
    Taking away Ozai’s menacing and irredeemable nature takes away from other parts of the story such as Zuko and Azula and how they ended up as they are. And it’ll take away from the ending of Aang questioning whether he’ll have to betray his cultural beliefs and take the life of someone who clearly deserves to have their life taken away.
    And just like you said too, he’s not as monstrous or threatening like a force of nature (such as a wildfire), he feels way too human and same for azula. Because azula was so feared in the series and she served and was obedient and even scared of Ozai that built him up more to be scarier and stronger than Azula.

    I don't agree that introducing Ozai was a good thing. In the animated series, each season a new member of the royal firenation family is introduced as antagonists. In season 1 it is Zuko, in season 2 Azula is added, and only in season 3 Ozai is seen more. This causes the tension to build naturally over the course of the show and for mystery to remain about who the firelord is. Also it creates a disconnect between team avatar and the firelord. Making the world feel larger and the firelord to feel more untouchable and distant. This works very well in the animated show in my opinion and this point is completely missed in the live action.

    Now, it’s clear to me that they’re targeting a more mature audience, judging by the fact that they literally show a character being burned alive in the first five minutes. What a way to set the tone, right? Even so, one of the original show’s strengths was that it didn’t take itself completely seriously all the time. The remake is grim and the characters are mature, despite being children. For instance, Aang feels less like a goofy kid thrust into being the Avatar, and more like a self deprecating angsty teen.
    I’m not saying we need jokes every five seconds or filler episodes, but seriously, just let these kids act like kids once in a while! Having some lighthearted moments mixed in makes the emotional moments hit that much harder.

    I completley agree with all of these, but how the heck did turning Katara into a Mary Sue not make the list?! The original Katara was so relatable because she struggled with water bending. She wasn't a natural, she didn't just pick up it, she had to work to get better and when she screwed up, she showed her intelligence by making her screw ups work for her. An example is in the first (or second depending on how you view it) episode where Sokka and Katara are rescuing Aang from Zuko where she tries to freeze fire nation soldiers but accidentally ends up freezing Sokka. Rather than giving up, or trying to figure out how to do the move properly, she turned her screw up into her strength and freezes the soldiers because of it! Not only that but they took out her training as well! She doesn't get the rank of master because she's proven to have worked hard to surpass even the Avatar in water bending by discipline and hard work. No, she simply surpasses him because she's a woman, and the conflict between her and Paku isn't that she's a woman and he won't train her. It's that she's a girl and he won't let her fight?! The hell is he gonna do if Katara and the other women start to fight when the fire nation is attacking? Attack the women to force them not to fight while the fire nation is attacking? It's such a stupid change.

    Honorable mention : having Ty Lee and Mai in the fire nation capital alongside Azula. I get that they wanted to do something to introduce Azula in season 1, but they still could have introduced mai and ty lee next season. In the original show, we meet them in settings that lets them have character development just from where they are and what they are doing. Ty Lee being a circus member tells us that she is someone playful and extravagant, and that she generally likes having a spotlight on her and standing out. Similarly, Mai living with her family in the newly fire nation controlled Omashu shows us how she dislikes her family life and probably wants to do other stuff (I feel like Ty Lee is a more fleshed out character in the original show, that or I misunderstood Mai). That episode alone is more character building for those two than the whole live action. Also, this episode is one of the first episodes featuring Azula and we get to see what she's willing to do to get what she wants based on how she convinces Ty Lee to join her. It is implied that Ty Lee and Mai are the some of the closest people Azula has, and she's willing to risk Ty Lee's life just to convince her, and taking her away from a place where she is happy. Also, those first episodes featuring Azula show us how powerful she is, and the way she goes out of her way to recruit Mai and Ty Lee, we already anticipate how powerful they are, as Azula considers them almost as her equals. So this little storyline in the original is very good and the show took it away and lost a chance to develop two of it's main characters. I feel like the only reason viewers can have of being invested in Ty Lee and Mai in the live action is that they've seen the original and liked them there. (Sorry for the poor english, it isn't my first language)

    June being in the show while The Deserter isn't, says a lot about this adaptation's priorities. Both could have been cut for time, (and between the two, Jeong Jeong is more important) but Netflix's mentality is that if you have a cool girlboss bounty hunter, you do whatever you can to fit her in.
    Changing Aang's abandonment is my #1. It's the whole point of this whole adventure! Aang not learning waterbending is #2, and the Airbender genocide, which ruins the intrigue, is #3. Katara being more timid, downplaying Roku, Sokka's erasing negative traits, and basically all the stuff they brought in from Season 2 so soon, round out my list.

    seems the main issue that caused most of these problems is rushing through so much time in the anime and shortning it for live action.
    netflix should make 1 major change and that is the timing of the comet like say it is due in 10 years instead of 1 year which would allow more of the original plots to take place and not be rushed or dropped and explain why Aang and the others age in the show since they will age while filming at a faster rate than the show s time frame.

    The reason why One Piece Netflix is good while ATLA is mid, they have the creator of the manga, Eichiro Oda in charge of the production as he supervized everything. Also, the casting is way better than ATLA casting even the guy who played Luffy has the same energy like Luffy in the anime or manga . Even the guy who played Sanji took his role seriously, from learning how to cook, doing martial arts and even cooking on Sanji's costume. Sure it's not 100% like the original but I give the credit to the director for his effort because the director is the fan of the anime.
    Meanwhile, for ATLA, I already knew it's gonna be bad as I heard the obvious red flag as the original creators from the cartoon left the production because of "Creative Differences" and now I know why.

    the show almost has the same run time as the original but thanks to being shoe horned into 8 episodes each 40+ minute it becomes such a weird fiasco to work out the story-line and ultimately the writers came up with a frakenstein mess that feels like we are either rushing through plotlines or are dragging our feet on some plots like the two spirit world/Roku episodes. • @J__T
    @J__T 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Some things I dislike:
    The paradox of this show is that the actors, for the most part, are really, really believable but their characters are not.
    Iroh, early on, is an idiot. It is on him that Zhao knows anything at all. Iroh also gets himself caught when no one was looking for him or Zuko. It's weird.
    The odd fascination on Kyoshi when she is likely 200 years removed from the world. And the cgi looked particularly poor.
    Kuruk being both even older than Kyoshi and having his soul, somehow different from the Avatar's soul which is not how reincarnation works, corrupted.
    Bumi, the actor was very good. Bumi, the character was extremely poor. Bumi tells Aang to not rely on anyone and that Bumi had to do 'things' that are unsavory. The problem is that original Bumi is a 100 years old and should be well past this, _and_ he should already have come to the conclusion that a group is stronger than any single unit. It makes me worry for the White Lotus.
    Personally, I think the seasons of live action should be double the cartoon with Roku's island being the finale of the first season. Sure, it would be tough doing this but it would give the opportunity to expand the characters. That doesn't seem to be happening here.
    The Hakoda change. It might be okay but it doesn't sit well with me since Sokka is supposed to be someone of bravado who then actually needs to prove himself. In s1, his brain is basically his only useful part; in s3, Sokka leads an army with a sword that he's, no matter how rushed, trained to fight with.
    Azula's introduction doesn't work whatsoever. According to her, the 'rebels' are her cousins. Why wouldn't her own cousins know what the royal princess looks like?
    Sokka's boomerang. He apparently made it himself which feels like a Star Wars gag. "You are alone so your name will be Solo." We didn't need to know _where_ the boomerang came from. And what is with the physics of this show? Suki can barely toss a fan and it cuts 5 melons cleanly but Sokka hard throws a boomerang and it barely impales one?
    I have more, but I wanted to mention somethings I liked:
    Zuko and Iroh's relationship feels very close to the cartoon.
    Sokka's character. He's the best of the good guys easily even if some of his 'sarcastic' lines feel incredibly out of place or as if they were filmed separately.
    The set design and wardrobe.
    Zhao.

The live action Bumi was grumpy rude and had zero like ability. In legends of Kora we see Aang names of one his sons after Bumi because he was his close friend and that is so sweet, but Aang would never name his child after Bumi if he treated him like live action Bumi did. 4. Forced identity politics.

    6. The Gaang making their greatest developments separate from each other rather than together.
    7. The blending of stories that really needed to be left isolated since they were crucial for character development like the Cave of Two Lovers.
    8. The misconception that more violence = more mature. More graphic violence doesn't substitute for mature writing.
    9. Aang not waterbending once in a book called WATER (this ties into flaws #1 and #2).
    10. The mistreatment of Roku and Aang in favor of giving Kyoshi more of a spotlight. She literally just took Roku's place and took away Aang's character development doing it because she solved his problems rather than nobody solving his problems which thus forced him to mature and own up to his role as the Avatar in the original.

    I agree with all of this. What they did to Bumi was an insult to the character, and Soka being.. mature?... I remember whenever the bounty hunter lady found him and I was literally "What? How is that even possible?"... They went from the Earth kingdom to an Island in the fire nation. Aang getting there himself would be unlikely in a short amount of time, let alone her sloth thing.
    Personally my least favorite thing was Aang not learning water bending. Like that was the WHOLE point of the book being called "Water". They have no reason to call it the water chapter since they spent more time in the earth Kingdom... Like I was expecting some amount of water bending. Plus Aang has WAY too much control over the avatar state. It has always knocked him out but now he can just enter it and meet avatars like its nothing...
    I love the cave of lovers, but I honestly feel they should have left it out, especially when it isnt going to have half of the cast that was part of arc in it.
    The graphics and acting was great. The actors did what they were told. Its just unfortunate the writers butchered it. If this show somehow manages to get to Book 3, I can't wait to see how they do the dragons.

    What they did with Bumi was much worse than portrayed in this video. He was a genius who loved to act like he was insane. He truly loved Aang. He LET the fire nation take his city because he saw the bigger picture. This guy was just old and bitter. I do agree that the worst thing they have done by far is try to put too much of the animated show into this adaptation. They needed to develop the parts they did include more deeply, and just let the rest go. Jet, the inventor, and the merc could have all been left out. It's easy to include the cabbage guy, and even pull him in more times. You see him cry over his lost cabbages for all of 10 seconds. No development needed. Jet, came, went, and had so little time, his presence was pointless. He should have been left out. There is no way they can make everyone happy. They need to concentrate on telling a good adaptation and let go of the rest. This makes me think of the movie Solo. They put so many call backs to the original trilogy that the story suffered. I don't need to see everything from the original story told in live action. I don't even care if aspects of the story are changed. I just want it to be good.
