    Man I love these trucks. I wanted one as a kid in the 90's, I ended up with a 73 shortbed Chevy pickup instead. It's great how long they built these trucks...my '73 was the first year of that bodystyle, the dash and gauges are pretty much exactly the same as this 89. That why these trucks are so great to build...parts interchangeability is phenomenal over the years, and they're dirt cheap too, as they built millions of these trucks. And that's nuts they got 16mpg with it, I'd be very happy getting that with one today.

      These old trucks weren't that bad. My first truck in high school was a 1990 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat and it handled fine I mean, sure it wasn't no sports car in terms of its handling capabilities, but neither is my 2011 F-150 FX4 5.0L I drive today. At no point in my old 1990 did I ever feel like I was going to lose control of it and I did have to make at least a few emergency maneuvers over the years I owned it.

He's an easy driver and still struggled to get higher than 10mpg out of that thing.

    The 80s are my favorite years for ford and chevy. I find it kind of odd that they busted fords balls for continuing to use the front end style on the 89 Bronco, which was only introduced in late 87. yet they praised chevy for their body style and nose.....which was introduced back in late 1980. Very biased in my opinion

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I never noticed that until now. At the time this was filmed the F-Series platform the Bronco was built on was only 8 years old and as you said, had seen a significant refresh only 1 year prior to this review, yet the Blazer they tested the very next year was riding on a platform that dated all the way back to 1973 ''a full 16 years before its review'' and they praised it. That does seem bias.

      @nathanmcdonald610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, no. Large SUV's are STILL a thing in 2022 lol. Suburban's are everywhere as are Expeditions and Expedition EL's. Most large 2 door SUV's died in the 1990s, but Ford's revival of the Bronco has kind of changed that. The modern Bronco ''though based on a midsize platform'' is actually very close and larger in some respects than these older trucks. All that being said, the Ford Excursion is the king of large SUV's. I doubt we'll ever see one that big again.

    The K5's always looked good, but performance wise Chev was always chasing the Bronco, always responding to it's updates. When they finally started to catch up in the late 80's/early 90's it got discontinued because of crumple frame requirements. On the bright side, GM finally got their act together when they replaced it with the Yukon, although at that point the bronco and Yukon were so different in function and purpose as to be two different vehicles. While the Bronco retained it's sporty offroad "fun" styleing and function, the Yukon was more of a "short suburban" and got a lot more cushy. Quality was way up, but the Yukon was much more the typical 90's SUV whereas the Bronco remained more true to it's past. All three, the Bronco, K5 Blazer and Yukon are unique and very nice vehicles, if you don't mind the very pick up truck MPG.

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, The Blazer never really did catch up to the Bronco's performance and like you said, the Yukon based on the GMT-400 platform, while a definitive refinement over the old squarebody K5 as a family vehicle, it lost some of its recreational value in the process. Because of that, I feel like generally speaking the old Bronco's of that era have aged much better.

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      GM should have stuck with straight axles. Their IFS setup is JUNK and has been for years. I don't know about their newest of new trucks, but the GMT-400, GMT-800's and GMT 900's were absolute trash. Go watch any sled pulling video. It is shockingly common for those listed platforms to snap tie rods on their IFS.

      Jesse Pearson I’ve been watching Motor Week for many years! I remember watching this episode back in the day it was first aired! It was in a local UHF station 38, out of the Boston area! You know back when to see it you had to fiddle with the round loop antenna! I have an older cousin that owned the same year full sized Jimmy back then, that was a great all around rig! That he used to tow a beautiful 28’ Airstream around like nothing! I know the 5.7 wasn’t rated very high back then, but neither were any other engines clocked with anti pollution crap! But I do remember them pulling loads very well! I had a new 1991 Silverado reg Cab short bed Sport I bought New, that came with the 5.7 and a 5 speed manual, with limited slip 3:73 gears. We used to tow a couple old Chevys we had all around to shows! Yea I towed two cars at once on a beautiful light weight aluminum car trailer! We had a pair of matching 1969 Corvette convertible and Corvair Corsa convertible around the North East, from Massachusetts to as far as VirginiaBeach. The trailer and two cars weighed in at just over 8,000 lbs! But the trailer had very good brakes with an electric control I added in the cab so I had plenty of braking power. With the 5.7, that I added headers and dual exhaust, with a bigger/better Edelbrock 4brl ProJection System added with a Corvette intake manifold, there was never a shortage of power. But I was never able to get a bigger gas tank than the standard 25 gal. So I had a highway range of inky about 150-200 miles, depending on if there were any hills on the trip. Oh I had plenty of power to maintain the speed limits, but at s cost! But that was one of the best years of Chevy trucks I’ve owned and I’ve owned a few over the years. From my first, a bought new 1978, K10, through a couple Silverados an Avalanche and New a Colorado, that pulls almost as well as the Truck described above, with twice the mileage empty or towing!

    I still say bronco was better only coz ford change the bronco in 87 and chevy and gmc kept the same design sine 70s all the way up to the 91 but i do like the Jimmy and blazer especially that body style but i still say the bronco is better its funny tho chevy only change the front and to tone it maybe add a bit more things but it was long over due for a change

      That bronco had the exact same cab that came out in 80' and they would continue to use it through atleast the 98' model year. The Chevrolet's are better trucks. You can have a 5.7 which is bullit proof compared to that nasty 351 Windsor; a inefficient and underpowered piece of scrap.

    The Blazer dash is cleaner and neater looking than Ford's huh? The reason the Blazer dash is neater looking than the Bronco isn't because it's better looking it's because the Ford dash has a more luxurious look while the Blazer looks like a dash someone made in their own garage with some flat stock pieces of metal and a hole saw. The Ford actually looks like it was designed by professionals. And yes, the transfercase shifter is too far from the driver, unlike how it's setup perfect on the Ford Bronco. The Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger shifter location makes no sense unless the passenger is suppose to be the one putting it in four wheel drive.
    The Blazer looks ridiculous with enough headlights for two vehicles, square shaped fenders for round tires(sure, makes sense!), boxy shape with no style, a frame so tiny it looks like a go-cart frame compared to the Bronco, a dashboard setup that looks like your uncle made it in his garage with powertools, a transfercase shifter in a dumb location best suited for the passenger to engage, axles inferior to the Bronco, hubs inferior to the Bronco, Transmission inferior to the Bronco, engines that don't have the durability that the Bronco has, etc., etc., etc.

    • @AntonSander
      @AntonSander 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Rex Holes
      .....It's not about the power in these, it's the torque lol. It was Emissions regulations, and those engines are not "shit", they'll go 3, 400,000 miles... Take tons of abuse.

    • @TheDeJureTour
      @TheDeJureTour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Rex Holes They were big 4x4 trucks with torque for going offroad and hauling - not race cars.
      But as an aside, those trucks were easy to work on and few buddies over the course of a few weekends would be able to build a 350 up into making gobs of horsepower. Even today, I've seen guys take a 350 block in a K5 and get 500 HP out of it or more. Your 1989 4-banger car wasn't going to be doing that - not to mention the fun and adventure of offroading!

    • @Lucille69caddy
      @Lucille69caddy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What are you, 16? It's not all about horsepower when it comes to truck engines. TORQUE is where it's at, something your little 4 popper has very little of.

    • @mwagner_87
      @mwagner_87 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engines weren't shit, they were built to be reliable. Making 210 horsepower from a 5.7L engine hardly stresses it so it'll last forever. Also, it makes 300 lb-ft or torque. How much does your 2L make? Maybe 100-120 lb-ft at best.
