Appreciate you Tom. I have listened to you since Covid and I’m not a musician but have a great love for music and great talent like yours. You she taught me appreciation for Nashville insider- gigs -white mountain toast- NO more Gildan. Gordon Mote -Sutton-GT Thanks bro- have blessed 2025
Your boy is definitely on the right path if he wants to learn Police tunes. "It's Alright for You" has always been personal favorite of mine. BTW, His performance on your birthday gig was impressive. His right hand is really relaxed while he plays and he has a really great sense of rhythm. He looks like a really experienced player up there. Bravo to him. The next great Session Man in the making.
Timely. Just yesterday I revisited the album Zenyatta Mondatta. I love listening to an album instead of single songs. Haven’t listen to the Police in years and was happy to go there again. 3 very talented fellas.
Thank You, Uncle Larry (Tom). I'm learning something about the sounds that come from a guitar as you squeeze them out. It's not 1 6 4 5, It's walk into the 1, smear to the 6, step up from below into the 4, overshoot and walk back down to the 5, and continue walking down to the 1. Music is in the smears, smashes and squeezes not stationary Chords. You and Guthrie inspire us.
It's always a pleasure to hear you playing the Police. Regatta de Blanc was one of my first CD's back when I was 9 years old. I was blasting that so hard in my father's old Volvo 740. The Police have had a special place in my heart ever since
started loading in today at 11 AM. Spent three hours moving in all the sound -wiring everything up then went back for 8: 30 and played four hours without a break loaded out -brought all the shit home unloaded it at 3 AM and watching Tom videos makes me get up and play guitar after all this the middle of night….. Extreme motivator you are Tom.
thanks for making me feel welcomed and a part of the skoolers... the police and that 80s sound is what im all about .. thanks for including me ...Lifeson just got his first ever guitar ( parents bought him) this week down the street from me at Loucin guitars,,, up here across the lake
I don't know anything about refinishing guitars, but having your kid wanting to do a guitar related project with you is about the best gift a dad could get. Good luck with it Tom and Marshall, can't wait to see the results!
Uncle Larry, as a fellow midwesterner of the same age growing up listening to the Police and the cars, I really enjoy your noodling and comments. It’s really great Marshall is getting exposed to and educated on the history of rock guitar, particularly into the early 80s which doesn’t often get the attention it deserves. Keep the torch lit for the next generation of rock guitarists.
Wow!! Thanks for the crystal clear tuning explanation, I did not understand tuning up and never down until you pointed out the string tug step. Wishing you a great new year!
Hi Tom - the 'obscure album cut' at 16:34mins - ‘Voices Inside My Head’ from 'Zenyatta Mondatta'! Thanks for the great 'Homeskoolin’ content in ’24 - It’s much appreciated! Happy New Year!
Buk, hope you and yours has a Happy New Year. Analog is the best sounding recorded music ever. It doesn't matter that something is a little out of tune or there's a small mistake it all comes together. Marshall's guitar shows that sometimes you can make a cheap guitar sound good. You don't have to spend a million dollars to achieve what your looking for. Have a great one man. Keep up the great work. I'm here for the duration!!!!!!
Your mention of Bob Avellini brought up a bunch of childhood memories… as a Chicago boy I appreciate your condolences. I was at the game and it was rough. (But don’t sleep on Caleb). Love your videos, Uncle Larry, I always learn something new.
Glad you mentioned Walking on the Moon...that and Every Little Thing She Does is magic have amazing verses! And the outro of Everything Little Thing is insane
❤ live music in the mid 80s was fantastic and I owe so much to Dan Huff that I never knew I did back then when choosing material. And hey Tom, there is a Wynonna song I was stuck on and so very connected to I can’t even speak words on it…..now I know why I love that guitar solo so much..and Skool more. Happy new year klass❤️
I trained for a very (VERY!) short time with a piano tuner in the late 70's and the main thing I remember is that he said you always go under pitch and bring it up to pitch. I believe it had to do with making sure there was no stored tension on the back side of the string that could pop the string out of tune later. You are the first person I ever heard say to tune from under pitch. Bravo!
Uncle Larry, way to represent the FC Cincinnati colors and Cincinnati’s Fretboard brewing! Thank you for all the guitar knowledge and experience you share and all the behind the scenes insights into the music biz. Happy New Year! Hope your 2025 is the best one yet.
I always learn things from you Tom In every video just by observing. Thanks for all you do.For us that are not the thick of things as you are in Nashville ,the inside knowledge is priceless.Hope you had a good Christmas. Love ya bro
Hey Tom - Love the channel...both for the music and the banter! Alot of people don't realize that music is more than just the chords and the notes...it's the culture, the mindset, the interests...all the things that comprise your life come out in your music. Also, I really dig your Burst. I don't have an original, I have a 2014 R8...but the cool thing is that it was Robben Ford's R8! The only thing I changed were the pickups...it had 57 classics (which I don't like)...I put in a low wound set of Ox4s. Anyway...keep it coming...all the content is great!
I have been lucky enough to see the Police numerous times throughout their career starting in 1979 at the Palladium in NYC and then a year or so later at The Ritz in NYC both smaller theaters but by 1981 I was watching them at Madison Square Garden. They never disappointed. All the shows were amazing because of course they had the songs and the chops to deliver them.
Andy Summers is one of my life long favorites. I have seen the police more times than any other band. I hate it had to end. Thanks for sharing your perspectives.
"The wing-eating people." That was good. Regarding what you said at the end, thank you. You are the best. Me and many people people are delighted every time you post a video. It's awesome, dude.
Hey Uncle Larry, greetings from Oak ridge, not too far from you, I really enjoy your playing, thank you for all the ideas and inspiration, I really like that you use the entire neck, even if just a few chords you make it sound just great, I wonder if you would share with the class a few of your favorite chord progression and turn arounds, keep rocking and thank you for all the lessons!
I saw the Police in the early 80s when they first formed, they opened for Blondie in a small club in L.A. called Madame Wong's they were super tight and very different for the times, I called it Ska on Steroids when explaining them to friends. They showed me a totally different take on a power trio. Thanks as always Tom for your endless wisdom and graciousness! Cheers and Happiest Holidaze Uncle Larry! and watch out all you Dillweeds!
Au Contraire my friend. When Tom calls folks out on their BS, its the best part of the channel, No one else has the balls or is genuine enough to do it. These keyboard warriors absolutely deserve it. They would never say this stuff to your face. What makes this channel great is tom is 100% real. Fake or deceitful people never swear and i dont trust them. I replayed 2 particularly good parts from yesterdays video for my wife lol. When Tom said (a while back) : "im gunna use this channel to arrange fights" i laughed so hard
I've played guitar 50 years and thought I would play my own instrument if I ever recorded songs. When I did do some recording it was laborious; took me way too many takes! I ever do that again I'm definitely using a good session guy. If I'm in Nashville I'll call you! I'm saving my money cause I know you guys are worth it,,,,,,,great videos
If you havnt already, consider building a partscaster with the kids. You can do it on any level. Either from an assembly of finished parts, or all the way down to choppin the tree down and shaping the wood from scratch. Theres so much to learn no matter how its done. Priceless time spent. Just dont rush. Leave the time frame open ended. It will come out better.
The Sting mini movie about the development and rehearsal of the post-Brand New day tour is really something. He added Christian McBride and Jason Rubella to the ensemble, rearranged the tunes, and set the concert for Sept 11 at his place in Tuscany. They get news about planes flying into the towers just a couple of hours before stage. What happens next is truly stunning. Not only do they agree to play, but they further interpret the songs in light of the tragedy they are all experiencing. Amazing musicianship. Even more awesome humanity.
Love the Police, uncle. Voices in my head. I listen to all music, but I guess you would call me a sports-bar blueser. I do slip in a minor 9th when I can, and try to cover tunes no one else does, or cliches like Stormy Monday, Stormy Tuesday, and Stormy Wednesday! Love this channel
Being born in ‘76, the Police were the pretty much soundtrack to my early childhood. Along with DEVO, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, etc…. Andy Summers is still a huge influence on my playing. Such an amazingly beautiful band.
About 10yrs ago my cousin once asked me " what's the hardest thing you can do on guitar ? " I had to respond with that ol joke about staying in tune lol...
Hey, Tom, I have a Hot Rod Deville and a Strat, but mine is an American Deluxe Strat, not an American Standard. I never thought my setup would confirm me as a walking, banal cliche, but maybe it does. Perhaps I just need to open my eyes and ears as I peer into the mirror more insightfully than I have in the past. Maybe then I’ll make the requisite changes and finally be happy like my dear Uncle Larry. Come to think of it, though, even when I appear disgruntled, I’m actually quite happy. I achieve bliss through the lens of discontentment, perhaps one reason I’m a fan of irony. It should come as no surprise, then, that I agree with your assessment of sports bar blues, and, believe it or not, I’ve been tuning up to pitch for as long as I can remember. And if you called me a Luddite from Philly, I’d consider it a compliment worth celebrating. Thanks for the awesome vids. You rock.
I miss being a kid at Christmas. Having another week or so off after Christmas to enjoy all your cool gifts. Cure CDs. Marty Friedman CDs. A new bass. This year I had to go back to work day after Christmas just to get some rest. And even that was not restful! 😂😂😂 14:58 As far as that guitar and tuning in general… if that’s a nitro finish, 100% acetone will take it right off. If it’s poly, you’re probably gonna have to hit it with a heat gun on med-high and start scraping. Absolutely not worth it. And I’m glad you refresh people on how to tune every so often. Another tip is bending behind the nut before you tune. Some of my guitars have nuts that are just a little bit too tight for my preferred string gauge and the string has to be re-seated properly or loosened in the nut slot. Then I tune UP to pitch. ❤
@@Cousin_Gregg lol, I was a little dumb. In the rundown, Tom says you gotta get the GE7 modded to lessen the noise. I ended up buying a vintage, modded unit. I think it was like 200CAD. I probably overpaid. I've heard the newer units are a lot quieter. Anyway, I haven't had anything else done to it. I'm sure it would kick ass with the mod, but it also kicks ass without it. :)
Love the shirt Tom. Reping my home town. Love Fretboard brewery. We will be down in Nashville on the 10th. Will you be playing anywhere that weekend? Keep of pickin
I spent 5+ hours driving yesterday and after listening to the first two Cars albums, I settled on the Police. Outlandos, Regatta, and Zenyatta in order. Then I came home to Uncle Larry playing Walking On The Moon and Canary In A Coalmine. Good times.
Happy Friday, Unc! Kicking the morning off with The Police 🤘🔥🤘 Man, that brings back some memories. I was taught to always tune up by my high school guitar teacher. Now, I also pull on the strings as you've demonstrated. That's some good instruction. Thank you, Unc! 🙏🏻🤍 Oh, and the seasonal depression is getting better. We're headed into the light
Hey Tom, don’t strip the body. It’ll be a nightmare, from experience, trust me. Just scuff it up bit and prime it. Then start to paint. PS you kinda blew my mind with saying people tune down to pitch. I had no idea there’s folks out there that don’t tune up. Like it’s in the name “ hey man let’s tune up” or “that thing needs a tune up” have a great new year. Thanks for a 2024 full of wisdom.
Chicago here....70yo...saw the 85 Bears...so I guess thats the standard i go by. Now it's rebuild every 4 years....been happening for probably 20 years.
what a wonderful present, another homeschoolin' today! I just have to ask you for this (been meaning to for days). Your tone and playing seems so perfect to play this and then zoom off into it with your magic. I'm sure you know off Les Dudek. From the album ghost town parade the intro cut central park. Raw tone and power at its' best! I put this cut on at a large party on a big nasty stereo and literally within 10 seconds everyone had appeared wondering what they were hearing (it had just come out so not many had heard it yet). It is Christmas................so please!
Literally the first thing I teach my students is exactly what you said about tuning. I may not be on any hit records yet, but at least I preach the proper way to tune 😂
Interesting changes from first two alums (Howard Gray producing) to the later albums with Hugh Padgham engineering and producing - but at all times that band was astonishing. I was lucky to see them at a warm up gig in NYC in the early 80's and it was nothing short of magical - a whole 'nother level of what music is capable of when all the planets align! Thanks as always, Larry.
I try to keep my pores clear, Tom...been counting on osmosis for too long. So glad I got to see The Police a few times back then. Enjoy the long winter. I look forward to St Paddy's Day as a sign that I made it through another one.
Hey Tom, I just pulled into the Rocky River Ohio post office to pick up some stamps. As I walked in, they were playing “I’ll be watching you” on the speakers in the building. I’m sure somebody could calculate the unlikely odds of that happening, but it sure isn’t me.
"The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter - it's the difference between the lightning bug and...the lightning." M. Twain
I just scored an old CE-2 and it immediately became my favorite chorus ever. Also, I’m sure you’re aware of Revv Amplification, but it does bear saying out loud that their little D20 is a monster tool for those situations where direct is the only option. I believe you’re a G65 speaker fan? Ownhammer G’s a good G65 IR pack. At least then you’re getting an amp that takes pedals more like you’d expect, and the general contour of a speaker you’re familiar with. For the grab-and-go stuff or for helping a songwriter buddy or whatever, they’re a great lil’ shout. I know you’re a knowledgeable cat. Just bears mentioning. Much love from the great white north and take the Vikes today over GB.

You rock.
Hahaaaa great comment
@@501chorusecho Thanks!
That's a great way to kick off the New Year!
Thanks for the videos and the "Hello Friends" 🙂
I miss being a kid at Christmas. Having another week or so off after Christmas to enjoy all your cool gifts. Cure CDs. Marty Friedman CDs. A new bass.
This year I had to go back to work day after Christmas just to get some rest. And even that was not restful! 😂😂😂

As far as that guitar and tuning in general… if that’s a nitro finish, 100% acetone will take it right off.
Happy Holidaze! More singing, please, in the new year!
Santa brought me a GE-7 EQ box, thanks for putting in a good word, Unc.
Such a great pedal. I bought one right after I saw Unc's rig rundown a few years ago.
@ did you send it to VTS for the mid-range mod or keep it stock?
@@Cousin_Gregg lol, I was a little dumb. In the rundown, Tom says you gotta get the GE7 modded to lessen the noise. I ended up buying a vintage, modded unit. I think it was like 200CAD. I probably overpaid. I've heard the newer units are a lot quieter. Anyway, I haven't had anything else done to it. I'm sure it would kick ass with the mod, but it also kicks ass without it. :)
@@Cousin_Gregg XTS recently offered a batch of brand new, modded GE-7s. I got one and paid $220.
Love the shirt Tom. Reping my home town. Love Fretboard brewery. We will be down in Nashville on the 10th. Will you be playing anywhere that weekend? Keep of pickin
Voices inside my head.....Great Track. DARKNESS is still the best Police song ever written. Introspective, with a touch of melancholy.
I spent 5+ hours driving yesterday and after listening to the first two Cars albums, I settled on the Police. Outlandos, Regatta, and Zenyatta in order. Then I came home to Uncle Larry playing Walking On The Moon and Canary In A Coalmine. Good times.
@501chorusecho love the shirt! Local brewery here in Cincy and around the corner from parents house. Great beer to match the great video!!!
Sing it Tom! ❤
Nuances. Yes my friend, I have picked up nuances and have incorporated them in my playing. I appreciate you. Thanks ✌🏼😎
Oh, and the seasonal depression is getting better.
Truth about no need to strip the body. A bit of elbow grease with 400 grit paper should do the trick.
Happy Holidays, Uncle Larry! I hope that 2025 brings you all the best.
I love the color of that tele!
Hey Larry!! Great name for a si-fi thriller!!! The Wing Eating People!!!!😂
That chorus pedal sounds amazing
Voices...inside my head! Yaaaa!
Wow, I swear that Teisco sounds just like all the bursts that I've never played
It is Christmas................so please!
hell yes bro
Stumbled across this comment - what a track. Rock guitar god joins the drum circle!
Another good old saying… as my grandmother used to say: “Better to be a smartass than a dumbass.”
I’m not even kidding.
Tom, your good friend Mr J Walsh said the same thing about tuning up to pitch, I can't agree more sir, thx !!
Uncle larry is here for us 🙌
Fedora and a bowling shirt with a chili pepper on it! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
1. Voices in my head. 2. Yeah, police all day :)
boom
I try to keep my pores clear, Tom...been counting on osmosis for too long. So glad I got to see The Police a few times back then. Enjoy the long winter. I look forward to St Paddy's Day as a sign that I made it through another one.
a bowling shirt with a chili pepper on it.. I died laughing!
I just got something similar for Christmas..uugghh.
@lp59pete 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Tom, I just pulled into the Rocky River Ohio post office to pick up some stamps.
As I walked in, they were playing “I’ll be watching you” on the speakers in the building.
I’m sure somebody could calculate the unlikely odds of that happening, but it sure isn’t me.
Imagine being the guitar player in the sports bar playing and you look up and there is Uncle Larry -- Holy Yikes better get my act together. 😁
Right - whip out the 1 b3 4 5 b7 pentatonic over 7 chords and get ready to dodge the incoming beer bottles!
Keep up the good work Tom we love ya. You’re so right about the osmosis thing. I get tons of benefit from your videos. Looking forward to a great 2025

I appreciate the 80s more now looking back on it. During the 80s I looked around for anything that didn't have a chorus pedal and electric drums.
Very true what you said about Black blues. Famous saying "Lightnin' changes when he wants to change.."
