    I just got this knife...after wanting it for MANY years! Just could not bring myself to pay 400 bucks for one. Happened to stop by a NRS store,this afternoon and the young man working the knife counter told me they had one on clearance. Picked it up for $221!!! So happy to finally own one. It will be the centerpiece of my SAK Collection!

      He was mentioning that it's nothing more than a desk piece but I beg to differ. You can most effectively use it I would think by putting it in your backpack or bringing it with you when you go camping or out on hikes. It's a trip-specific tool not intended for convenient EDC but the thing is your EDC isn't ideal for trips and this one isn't ideal for EDC so if you have one of these and an EDC you're set for all possible scenarios. But this one is definitely not just a desk piece.

    • @Northanteus
      @Northanteus 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      EDC is obviously subjective to the individual. To each their own. I'd easily EDC the XXL (just get a leather holster and clip it to your belt), but buy one? Nah. Way too much money for me, for tools I already EDC daily. I am getting a Swiss Champ soon and most people on EDC forums scoff at thinking they'd ever carry that daily, but I laugh at them. 😁 The swiss champ is roughly the size of a typical Leatherman pliers. 🤷‍♂️ They're just used to being light on their feet, but I prioritize being 'prepared on my feet', 😉 even if just a bit heavier. So what, just do more squats at the gym. 😉

    At this point this it's less a "Swiss Army Knife" and more of a "Swiss Army Brick".
    You'd need to have monstrously long fingers to hold such a thing properly.

    • @marksmith4892
      @marksmith4892 หลายเดือนก่อน

      not sure i agree with that. my hands are normal size i suppose and when i grip it, my thumb and middle finger only can touch but i consider this to be an advantage because it creates more torque when turning a stubborn screw. if it were ANY wider then i would say that would present a problem but they kept the size just under the limit for me anyway.

    1 tool that is missing is the round philips screwdriver on the back. i find that more aesthetically pleasing than the corkscrew. i don’t know whether it is superstition but victorinox never puts the rounded screwdriver on the same tool as one with a corkscrew. i have heard it is because of how the tool is positioned in the back that they cannot put both, but i still think they can if it was on the opposite side and had enough layers away from each other. this swiss army knife definately has enough layers to separate the rounded philips from the corkscrew, yet it is still not present.

      I do love me the good ol’ Swiss Champ, I see the XXL as something you own not really to use, but to enjoy. It’s a beautiful, functional paper weight and it’s one of my favorite items just because of how ridiculous it is, but without being poorly built for it.
      In all honesty, a solid fixed blade, a Leatherman surge, a solid flashlight and a good pocket knife are my go to items.
      I keep a lot of stuff on me, some things more useful than others. I have a lighter (butane yellow flame zippo) multiple pens, and several other odds and ends that live on me day to day; but the core of it is those mentioned items. I don’t see Swiss Army knives as vital anymore because my biggest general needs are a Really good File, and really solid needle nose pliers. The scissors, awl, and bit driver are all very handy as well, so the surge is really my ideal multitool, but the Arc is nearly equal to it in my eyes, with all my primary required tools onboard and in a lighter, faster parcel.

    😂 they need to create this as a "modular" SAK. it could become three independent knives that interlock as one, but they could be used separately. The pliars section could then hold a nut & the section with a screwdriver could turn a screw or bolt which is impossible when used as a single SAK.🎉

      Let’s be practical here, I wouldn’t be using any Swiss Army knife for skinning aside from their fixed blade models. Getting blood up in there is a bad idea imo.

    I have got the XLT and that's about my limit (indoors!) for it getting bulky. It's so bulky I'd never take it outside or carry it but indoors the XLT does enough extra stuff the Swiss Champ does, that I think it's worth having the XLT. I do have both but I have never even touched the Swiss Champ since getting the XLT. Both were bought more than 20 years ago and I just love the XLT so much more.
    Layers? My XLT has 10 layers. The XXL in this video has 15 layers so I'd guess it's 50% wider. That is absolutely ridiculous or "preposterous" as it rightly says in the video title. Yes in any situation, the XXL is preposterous to the point that even if it stayed indoors, it's an impractical tool due to its heft!
    One could say the same about the XLT "Why not just use a Swiss Champ" but the XLT has the wood saw, it has the hex tools... these are massive advantages over the Swiss Champ - that itself is already a very bulky tool.
    As far as classic penknives are concerned, you can take the XXL and divide it by 5 so instead of having 15 layers, try 3 layers... that's what a penknife you'd carry outdoors _should_ have. It has to have the large and small blade... it has to have the can opener... but beyond that? Ask yourself what else does it really need? I'd argue the wood saw, but does a thin Victorinox penknife even exist that has the wood saw? It's somehow viewed as a tool only found on these super-wide showcase knives but as an outdoor survival tool that's crazy and I think the wood saw is perhaps one of the most important tools on the knife. This one tool is what I think sets apart the Swiss Champ and the XLT the most.

      If I recall the Camper and the Huntsman both have Saws,
      I used to carry a Swiss champ and, after that an Explorer. But the thing is that I always have another multitool, being based in the US and further (in Utah, with literally no restrictive knife laws) I can carry any multitool I know of without issues and I do.
      I Eventually stopped carrying Swiss Army knives in general, not that I don’t love them but in the situations I find myself in, I more regularly need pliers and locking tools. A leatherman is more heavy use, and can take a large amount of abuse that would have the tools on a SAK collapse in moments.
      But I’ve always been hard on my tools and come what may as long as the job gets done, many don’t share that view.
      The Swiss Champ XXL is great, I love it as a desk piece. It’s built just like the rest, it could theoretically handle doing everything it has tools for, accounting for lack of space to do so lol.
      Thanks for the comment! I might have to look into the XLT soon

  • @marksmith4892

    I bought this and it just arrived today. My suspicion was correct that the assertion that it's too large to be used in a practical sense is not accurate. If you get a leather pouch that attaches to your belt, then you can use this for EDC, and also, if you go backpacking, hiking, camping, et. al. and you throw this in with your other gear then you won't even notice the extra weight. The bottom line on this knife is that if you're doing something like attaching your car keys to it then it's WAY too large in terms of volume and weight, but if you are using it for particular types of applications like those aforementioned then it is the superior option by far. What I did was buy a swisschamp and buy this swisschamp XXL so that i have the non-XXL one that's smaller/more manageable for EDC without wearing a belt and then the XXL version when i am either wearing a belt or engaged in those activities where I can throw it in with my other gear. Another point to consider is that if you use your swiss army knives around the house then the XXL is tremendously beneficial because there are so many tools on here that I will use for household convenience that are not included in the regular swisschamp. I highly recommend this knife and a good belt-fed carrying case provided you know what you're getting yourself into.
    Edit: Oh and about that pharmaceutical spatula, I don't ever foresee myself using it to separate pills, BUT, i definitely would see myself using it to spread butter or peanut butter or jam. It's the kind of tool really that could find multiple improvisational uses for a creative user.

      I don't think anyone imagines that it's functional. It's just for collectors. I don't think the SAK design is ageing poorly at all, they've been in business a century longer than Leatherman and are still the most popular iconic multitool/pocket knife on the planet. Last year Victorinox opened a flagship store on Oxford Street in London UK. There's zero chance of Leatherman doing that. Outside the US Leatherman isn't really well known. Doesn't help that the name is a bit erm ambiguous and anyone seen here with that brand on any promotional gear might get mistaken for a member of the rainbow community lol.

      Sak aren't aging badly, for most people something like a huntsman or tinker deluxe will have more than enough functions for edc

    Now to find the one person who has legitimately used all the tools in this thing at one point or another, and for actual purposes, not just for the heck of it and to be able to say that they've used all the features 😜

      I had the predecessor to this, the XAVT, which was the same plus an added LCD display. Stitched a leather belt case for it, and carried it for 15 years, from 2008 till 3 months ago. Through 22 countries on 3 continents. LEGITIMATELY used every single feature countless times, from opening cans on Alaskas north slope, to fixing my wife’s eyeglasses in Key West, cutting tent guy rope in Scotland, tightening car battery terminals in St. Petersburg Russia, removing splinters from my kids foot in Croatia. Absolutely indispensable. Left it on my pickup bedrail and drove off from a gun range, (after tightening a loose shotgun forearm). Just bought this version last week, so happy to have it back. Don’t let the size, weight or price dissuade you, these things are awesome, and worth their weight in gold !

      @@AwkwardHypernerd413 I won’t tell you it’s small . . . .. but it’s like any other tool to me, you learn to adapt, and your hand finds it’s natural place. I believe there was a lot of thought that went into the placement of each implement, at least if you’re right-handed, and I don’t think I would move anything from where it is. I find it very comfortable to use. I’ve had many other models, the Tinker, the Huntsman, the Cybertool, the Hiker, the Climber, the Swisschamp, Swisschamp XLT, even the absurdly tiny Classic. They’re all in my collection, multiples of some. I just prefer this one.
