The limitation is that mobile mining is only for Migaku's own SRS right now, because there is no way to send cards from the Migaku mobile app directly to Anki (the desktop version uses custom Anki add-ons for that which are all cross platform). I suppose it would be possible to have somekind of a Migaku Memory > Anki exporter, where you'd need to download cards and import them to Anki every time, but honestly even that sounds pretty tedious lol.

amazing, i was really confused when i wanted to start sentence mining with migaku, i can now begin my own journey, it was very helpful and it cleared nearly all the questions i had on my head. I was considering 20 words per day but would that be too rough? I alrealy know 4000 on core 2k6k and I wanted a boost on my study, it still feels like I barely understand anything from videos as I am just a complete beginner but i had a feeling that if i made the cards carefully picking I would have an easier time to learn everything. Thanks for the video by the way!
You can try how it goes for yourself! I started 20 words a day a few weeks after taking all the 6000 cards, and at first it was pretty hard, but over time it became a complete routine and I was smoothly able to keep up with it for a long time.
i got mine set up just like yours now. i was on vocab front cards before so it's gonna be a little adjustment period i think. Have you ever used only vocab before or were you always sentence front
Thank you so much, I love the simple cards. Just one question is there a way to get the Furigana on the front for the word with your setup. Other than that the cards are perfect for me.
Used your reflink a couple of years ago now and tbh not sure i will ever willingly use the new version over legacy, feel like it has been left to rot for the last year or so while they are clearly deprioritising anki and focusing on things nobody asked for, like their own SRS and learning materials etc, no doubt for mobile only users. Really dislike the bright UI too to be honest, maybe its better to get used to it sooner rather than later though, any news about a video player? Edit: I see you already mentioned it elsewhere, perhaps before the end of the year, might have to try it then.
Migaku won’t even let me log in. I emailed support four times over the course of a two months. The fourth time they finally reached back and told me the “sign-in” person was on vacation. They never followed up. That was 3 months ago. Terrible experience
Hello, everyone! Do you think sentence mining is a good idea at around the N5-N4 level? I’m not sure exactly how much vocabulary I know maybe around 1,000 words and I know about 150 kanji
I am really early in my Japanese learning journey so I probably wont get to sentence mining for a while but I do have a question, I am using the core 2k/6K deck and plan to use migaku when I feel ready, I'm hearing 1000 to 1500 words being thrown around as a good time to start sentence mining in which case I'll still be studying from the 2k/6k. I do have a few questions about this 1. Am I correct but from what I can tell you create a separate deck to your starter vocab deck (in my case the core 2k/6k deck). If this is true what are the benefits of doing it this way 2. Assuming I'm right about the separate deck thing should I reduce the number of new words a day on the starter deck when I start sentence mining 3. Again assuming separate decks, what do you do if you mine a word and then later you find that word appears in your 2k/6k deck (or whatever starter deck)
Great Video! Do you know how to add JP subtitles using the new Migaku? I used to be able to add subtitles from Kitsunekko into Netflix with the old Migaku but now I'm no longer able to do it.
I'm not sure if that's a feature, all I know is that they're working on auto-generating subtitles for content too. Perhaps its best to ask from their discord.
Thanks for the video guide! I'm curious what you make of the recent talk around Google Chrome? You think this will affect Migaku in any noticeable way? Discovered they just did a couple week half off sale on their lifetime option.
The legacy extension will from my understanding stop working once manifest v3 gets enforced full force, but the main extension is trying to catch up with all the missing features before that happens.
Imo Migaku is a time saving + convenience tool, and you have to weight it against how much that added convenience matters to you compared to other tools. If you have no income and you're staying consistent in your studies with what you're using without feeling like its burning you out, just keep using them.
Just a random (and probably stupid question) but are you required to have the subtitle file of said content you wanna sentence mine or is it all automated? Like I'm using an extension called asbplayer and I'd usually have to look up srt, as s etc. files to use it for sentence mining, does migaku have the same """"""""""issue""""""""""?
Migaku doesn't add subtitles to content (at least yet, iirc they might have a subtitle auto-generator in the works). It is intended to be used on sites such as animelon, netflix, TH-cam, etc, all of which already have subtitles.
Not really a question about the video but, how is the experience of playing cs in japan? Do you get put in servers with people from japan, or mainly people outside japan?
I made a livestream on this channel where I streamed a few games of CS2, but I didn't get a single native player: th-cam.com/video/bLWztIeslwo/w-d-xo.html

i so so so wish migaku worked with firefox. i use librewolf and vim keybinds because i dont use a mouse, so using chrome is honestly painful sometimes ;w; no firefox support is the reason i havent used migaku to this day
Like I said in another comment, I personally use Firefox mainly, but I actually don't mind it being Chrome only, as it means that I'll be using Chrome exclusively for sentence mining with Migaku, and I won't have any compatibility issues with other extension such as yomitan. However, not sure how using Migaku with vim keybinds would be like.
If we show the target word underneath the sentence, if the word was written in kana in the sentence but Migaku uses the kanji form as the target word, is that alright? Do you think it’s fine to see the kanji form on the front too, or would that give away the meaning of the word and help too much when reviewing?
Personally I don't think it matters that much - words that are written in kana in the sentence often are just written in kana form and rarely in kanji, though not always. You can choose the kana variant in the pop up dictionary by scrolling down usually, but personally. I personally mostly look at the target word and ignore the sentence most of the time anyway because its faster for me, but occasionally I do check the sentence as well.
@ thanks so much, I knew I could rely on a reply from you. I’m starting sentence mining as I am 6 days away from finishing the Core 2.3k. As always, your videos are inspiring and keep me motivated.
great stuff but i have a problem. I have done about 3.5k vocab cards in the core 2k6k deck, any idea on how to manage that? should i keep reviewing that and switch to migaku memory or stay with anki? and will i be able to sync known cards from anki with migaku at some point or do i have to remeber if i have seen a word in anki already? every piece of advice is much appreciated.
You can use make cards for Anki with Migaku if you're sentence mining on PC. I'd personally stick with Anki in that case, esp. since it a Migaku Memory to Anki converter seems to be in the works.
I'm not really sure what kind of an UI Satori has, but Migaku should be able to mine most text-based websites! If its just simple text snippets, then stuff like yomitan can work as well, depending on which features you want to use.
I followed the steps but when I got to notetype it wouldnt let me put Migaku Japanese, it pop up with a error. Is it because Im not using migaku legacy and that Im using regular migaku
No, I don't think there is a point in using output cards unless you urgently need to output specific vocabulary as fast as possible (e.g. a job). Doing recognition cards will allow you to increase your comprehension as time-efficiently as possible, allowing you to "unlock" more immersion, and getting enough input is going to be fundamental for good output regardless.
I have started using Migaku with Anki, but I hate the Migaku Anki card’s styling. I find when I use a custom card, the auto generated information for pitch and what not is not rendered properly and the text looks all weird. Did you have this problem at all? I tried your custom card and found I still had this issue. I even cloned the Migaku card to do slight modifications, but found the rendering issue was present in my clone before I even made any changes…
I didn't have this issue as you can see from the video. Maybe you're using the legacy version? I'm not sure if my custom note type from this video works with the legacy version. The Migaku Anki extension also needs to be some compatible version I'm pretty sure.
For some reason, the Ctrl + Alt + C shortcut doesn't seem to work for me - it just pastes in the last thing I've got saved to my clipboard. Might need to investigate it further. Also, would you recommend adding pitch graphs to Anki cards? I think it could be helpful to know but I've already got so many cards from the Core 2k/6k deck that don't have any so I'm wondering if I'm too far along to go back and add them now.
Try hitting ctrl + c to copy the current stuff to clipboard before hitting ctrl + alt + c, then it should work. If the shortcut does nothing, then probably best to try mapping it to a different key combination. You can try adding pitch graphs to cards, I never did, but honestly I'm thinking that I kinda wish I had, as they won't do any harm anyway other than bloat cards a bit. Not sure how effective it will be, but I imagine I'd remember the pitch graph for at least a few thousand of word if I had done that since the beginning.
2:12 just throwing it out there IMO "Old Enough" is not good at all for beginners, it's hard enough trying to understand japanese let alone japanese toddler speak haha
I find that Migaku shines the most in mining video based content, and large bodies of text if you want features like learning statuses and such. Playing games mainly depends on taking screenshots, sending them to OCR, and then making a card from a single text-based sentence. You can just use something simple like Google Lens + Yomichan for that as well, though, I can imagine that pulling out your phone and taking a photo with the Migaku app for OCR and quick card creation can be pretty convenient as well, as you wont have to alt tab all the time. Currently that's best on iOS though, but will be the same on Android in the near future as well.
@@Livakivi Yes your understanding is correct. mining with games does require more steps. And I was curious if migaku can help with reducing it to 1, because across 10000+ cards, mining faster and getting higher quality cards means less review time in the long run. By the way, what do you think about "posting the whole screenshot on your anki card will make you remember the scene, but not the exact word when you are trying to recall it" sentiment?
@@Anonymous-cv8gy I'm not really sure if Migaku can make sentence mining faster with games because it depends on your workflow, last time I mined from a game I just did it with ShareX + Google Lens + yomitan, but you can try the free trial and see if you find any benefits. I personally always put my images on the backside of the card. The role of an image imo is just to remind you in which context a particular sentence might have came from. I have cards that are multiple years old, and I might no longer remember where I mined them from, but a screenshot would instantly remind me. Putting a screenshot on the front is something I do only in very rare cases, otherwise it might give out too much information, e.g, if you have a target word of 林檎, and a picture of an apple, you will probably know the meaning+reading without even looking at the kanji itself.
@@Livakivi You can combine migaku with something like Kamui to really make mining from games easy. Kamui allows you to set a scan region and scan games with a click of a button. The app has its own look up system and Anki integration, but you can forgo that and just use Migaku since Kamui is browser based. Migaku look ups work fine on it. It's pretty accurate too. Only problem is that Kamui is not free, though pretty cheap with lifetime options as well. It might be worth it if you game a lot.
You can edit the Migaku editor stuff pretty much the same as the Anki stuff, however, I think if you open up "map fields" (and iirc turn on intercept fields), then when you create a card, it just sends the fields to the map fields fields, which is basically the same as the add card window. Alternatively, you can just have Anki browser open, and edit the card directly from the browser after creating it.
13:34 I noticed that when you click "create card" in the browser extension, anki first populates all the fields in its card creation window, after which you then manually press add. I would also like to have this behavior, since I want to manually add a pinyin field (for studying Chinese). However, when I press "create card", the card is automatically added to anki without giving me the option to change anything. Any way to change this? I'm on anki 24.6.3.
@@Livakivi Thanks for answering :) Someone pointed out to me that the option "Intercept fields" in the "map fields" window needs to be checked, that solved it for me
Just for the sake of completeness and to avoid any confusion of others facing the same issue, I am now getting the desired behavior even when the option "intercept fields" is left unchecked. I'm not sure if checking the option once was the solution, if there was a bug, or if I made some unintended change that solved my issue by accident.
Right now you can't transition cards to Anki from Migaku's own SRS (Migaku Memory), you can only make cards directly for Anki through the web extension as demonstrated in the video. However, in their Discord, they did say that they are working on a Migaku Memory > Anki converter, but I'm not sure when exactly it will be released.
I think tracking the cards is bugged in migaku. I mark all my cards after creating a card and the next time the words are just red again instead of purple or orange. Imo Migaku is pretty buggy overall but sadly theres no alternative
Weird, usually the words I mark as 2 are usually still tracking next time. It always worked in the legacy extension too, but the new one seems to be a bit more complex.
The legacy extension has support for local files of a certain video format (but there's some official github page for a video converter script for it when using different formats). I just tried it on asbplayer, it parses the subtitles as if it were a text site, so it won't be the full video mining experience like on TH-cam and such.
You need to install the legacy extension to import your known words from Anki cards, after which they'll be synced to your account, and therefore to the new extension as well.
You can still import words with the legacy extension, which takes 15 seconds to install and its a one time operation. I feel like it makes sense to postpone that to prioritize the actual every-day functionality. The ebook reader and local file player are also going to be released very soon from now, probably before the importer. There's even a Migaku SRS > Anki converter in the works. I personally thought that the AI stuff is also a gimmick that I'd never use (after all, at least on PC, I can just open a new tab and use ChatGPT there), but since its so easy to access and already properly prompted, I surprisingly find myself actually using it sometimes, esp. when the definitions aren't present/clear enough, or when its some cultural thing I might not know. It's also available on mobile the same way.
@@Livakivi Yeah, I find it super annoying to switch to the legacy extension especially since, on my end, it sometimes doesn't sync the two so I have to re-do the process a few times. But your points make sense, these new features sound pretty dope. For the AI stuff I guess I'm still way too early to see cases like yours, but I'll give it a shot nonetheless then
There isn't a single open source alternative that has the same functionality as Migaku. The closest you'll get is asbplayer + its extension + yomichan, but mining an equivalent card takes more actions there than it does on Migaku. It also has limitations such as only being able to add a single target word per card, and doesn't have other features such as learning statuses, mobile support, mass exporting cards, access to the pitch trainer, etc.
Thats true. However From what i can see in the video, it is much more convinient for learning japanese. things like: using ai, being able to sentence mine on the phone, the convenience of not having 3 extensions to learn and being able to mine a card instantly are huge time savers. With my setup for example in order to make a car, i have to use yomichan and then clik a keyboard shortcut to record and send the audio to anki. here you just press q. I understand though that it isnt necessary.
@@Livakivi oh sure, I don't expect an exact open source copy of migaku, cause migaku wouldn't sell a single subscription if that would be the case (hovewer creating an open source addon that has most of these features wouldn't be a big deal imho). Im also assuming that most of the additional features of migaku are not as frequently used as the main feature of mining sentences. However if you set up ur own open source environment then you can extend it however you like and you are not "vendor-locked" to wait for company to update app and add functionalities you need. For someone using anki just to learn japanese migaku makes sense, but if you want to use anki to learn anything else, like drawing, programming, math and other stuff, then you would benefit much more from setting up ur own thing. It would cost you more time but in a longer run you will save a lot more money thanks to that initial investment
@ If you compare it to Japanese then I'm saying it with a different pitch sometimes because English is a stress timed language and otherwise it would sound very unnatural.
That migaku to anki card creation is buggy as hell. It says the card has been created, but it did not transfer anything to the add window of anki despite having the intercept fields checkbox checked with fields mapped. It only worked once.
I would post in discord. I don't think it's THAT buggy because so many people use Anki but I also had an issue with the word generator bugging out and not creating anki cards and one of the people there helped me out - turned out its some bug and i turned off some setting and it went away.
@@Livakivi I figured out the bug. If the Word Audio field is empty, it fails to map the fields to Anki. I reported the issue to discord. I just hope they fix it soon.

great vid mate!
yay liva upload
0:00 Best intro ever.
Liva! Thank you.
I really appreciate these videos. Everything from the video editing, structure and information, is very well made. (at least in my opinion)
Lastly, your video editing style is one of my favourites. Congrats!
Will use this for polish once i become a neet again 💪
update: polish is not supported
@@TheRubenDK what about spanish?
amazing, i was really confused when i wanted to start sentence mining with migaku, i can now begin my own journey, it was very helpful and it cleared nearly all the questions i had on my head.
I started 20 words a day a few weeks after taking all the 6000 cards, and at first it was pretty hard, but over time it became a complete routine and I was smoothly able to keep up with it for a long time.
wake up babe new livakivi video just dropped
i got mine set up just like yours now. i was on vocab front cards before so it's gonna be a little adjustment period i think. Have you ever used only vocab before or were you always sentence front
Thank you so much, I love the simple cards. Just one question is there a way to get the Furigana on the front for the word with your setup. Other than that the cards are perfect for me.
new addon anki sync and manual subtitle audio record timing waiting room 👺
I do have a few questions about this
1. Am I correct but from what I can tell you create a separate deck to your starter vocab deck (in my case the core 2k/6k deck). If this is true what are the benefits of doing it this way
2. Assuming I'm right about the separate deck thing should I reduce the number of new words a day on the starter deck when I start sentence mining
Do you think migaku is worth the price? currently using ASBplayer, but im a student without income, so idk if the upgrade is worth the 9EUR/month
@@LivakiviThanks gonna watch it, been thinking if it’s worth while learning Russian, I’m currently trying to find reason for it. Btw love the videos, been learning Japanese for probably half a year now, and your videos helped me get started with anki and a bit of other stuff.
i so so so wish migaku worked with firefox. i use librewolf and vim keybinds because i dont use a mouse, so using chrome is honestly painful sometimes ;w;
no firefox support is the reason i havent used migaku to this day
Like I said in another comment, I personally use Firefox mainly, but I actually don't mind it being Chrome only, as it means that I'll be using Chrome exclusively for sentence mining with Migaku, and I won't have any compatibility issues with other extension such as yomitan. However, not sure how using Migaku with vim keybinds would be like.
@@Livakivi I think that's probably what I'm going to be doing, using chrome solely for migaku. its a shame but it is what it is aha
How can i make the cards so i have the card once with the front site and once with the backsite?
@@Livakivi ookay grazie mille!
hello livakivi :)
Does Migaku work for online japanese stories, like Satori Reader? If I could use Migaku with Satori that would be amazingly useful.
I'm not really sure what kind of an UI Satori has, but Migaku should be able to mine most text-based websites! If its just simple text snippets, then stuff like yomitan can work as well, depending on which features you want to use.
@@Livakivi I'll give it a go, thanks mate!
I followed the steps but when I got to notetype it wouldnt let me put Migaku Japanese, it pop up with a error. Is it because Im not using migaku legacy and that Im using regular migaku
Do you make reverse cards (ie definition -> word) with sentence mining? I would have thought that it helps with speaking/production.
Money trap
Love the note type! Is there a way to center it all? I got the text to center easily but the image.. doesn't really want to
In Cards > Styling, where it says .images-wrapper { ... }, add a line for "margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" without the quotes
@Livakivi thanks man! Love your work, has helped my japanese journey a lot ♥️
does it work for learning english? Pls answer me, i'm tired of creating anki-cards manually🤕🤕🤕
It should work for English too, its best to check their site
Any news on the media player? Will probably try switching from legacy at that point, don't use discord or whatever.
Doesn't seem to be out just yet.
Should I mine cards before I do my anki deck so they're mixed in with my other reviews or should I do it some other way
nvm I just mine them for tomorrow so i can do it as my last thing of the day
For some reason, the Ctrl + Alt + C shortcut doesn't seem to work for me - it just pastes in the last thing I've got saved to my clipboard.
Liva could you try the new and optimised DEEPIN OS 23
I got 1 month of trial version of Migaku via your reflink.
What will happend when it expired? I will couldn't to use this extension generally?
I think it will just ask you to restart your subscription if that happens, if it doesn't auto-charge
new version doesn't seem to have the video player either. I hope that isn't gone
It's in the works and going to be released possibly before the end of the year.
I mainly do sentence mining from playing games and narrative driven games, like witcher 3, jrpgs.
Does migaku help with this?
It might be worth it if you game a lot.
do you actually use this or is this just an ad?
I actually use it and have for years
If you were to learn Chinese, would you take a similar approach to how you learned Japanese?
Yeah, definitely
@@Livakivi if you ever start doing chinese it would be sick to start at the same time
How do you send the information from the Migaku editor to the Anki Add window instead of it automatically creating the card after clicking on "create card"?
You can edit the Migaku editor stuff pretty much the same as the Anki stuff, however, I think if you open up "map fields" (and iirc turn on intercept fields), then when you create a card, it just sends the fields to the map fields fields, which is basically the same as the add card window.
Alternatively, you can just have Anki browser open, and edit the card directly from the browser after creating it.
@Livakivi Thank you! I've just started using it and this video helped a lot, as usual 🙌🏻
I had the Migaku extension "map fields" window open, you can try that, or you can just have the card browser open and edit new cards from there.
0:00 hiii
im using the trial right now so i can't import new cards to anki, will i be able to move the existing cards to anki if i transition to the paid plan?
Right now you can't transition cards to Anki from Migaku's own SRS (Migaku Memory), you can only make cards directly for Anki through the web extension as demonstrated in the video.
However, in their Discord, they did say that they are working on a Migaku Memory > Anki converter, but I'm not sure when exactly it will be released.
@@Livakivi good to know, thanks for the response!
Is it possible to use Migaki on local Video Files with subtitles using asbplayer or something similar?
The legacy extension has support for local files of a certain video format (but there's some official github page for a video converter script for it when using different formats).
I just tried it on asbplayer, it parses the subtitles as if it were a text site, so it won't be the full video mining experience like on TH-cam and such.
Wait so I can't add all my known words from Anki to the new Migaku extension or did I understand that wrong
You need to install the legacy extension to import your known words from Anki cards, after which they'll be synced to your account, and therefore to the new extension as well.
@Livakivi I see thank you!
It's crazy to me that they keep adding AI features nobody wants while there are still no way of adding known words from Anki in the new extension
For the AI stuff I guess I'm still way too early to see cases like yours, but I'll give it a shot nonetheless then
is migaku available for other languages?
Cantonese
Chinese
English
French
German
Japanese
Korean
Portuguese
Spanish
In addition to what @WarriorX16 said, Vietnamese will be the next language to be added, and after that they plan to add Italian, Arabic, and Russian
Video idea: Try Linux from scratch!
Im pretty sure you can do the same with open source alternatives and without paying money for simple app that just copy bunch of things into anki card
I want this but for German and English
Migaku supports German and English lol
Migaku supports 9 languages including German and English
@@WarriorX16 LOOOOOL
@ no excuse to not start now 😂
I'm sorry, but you're pronouncing Migaku wrong, check the google translate.
wrong in which language lol
@ Japanese
@ If you compare it to Japanese then I'm saying it with a different pitch sometimes because English is a stress timed language and otherwise it would sound very unnatural.
I cant stand the new version of it, i dont get why they made a new one thats still just a downgrade of the old one
That window is only meant for mapping fields that you do once. You're not supposed to have it open when making cards otherwise.
@@Livakivi I figured out the bug. If the Word Audio field is empty, it fails to map the fields to Anki. I reported the issue to discord. I just hope they fix it soon.
