    I'll be honest, the 2k/6k was just what I needed to get started properly with japanese, since everytime I used a textbook and they wanted me to make a sentence, I felt so dumb because I lacked waaaay too many words.
    Also, I feel like making your own cards is only necessary if you are using highly specialized words with their context (like naming every part of a cell, or different muscle groups), since vocab cards are just that, vocab and it doesn't really matter how you learn it.
    Great vid as per usual

    The core 2k/6k deck is so well made it’s not on the same level as other pre made decks. It’s professionally made for learning Japanese from a true beginner level on up using sentences. It’s not just some deck some guy made mining sentences on what he thought was cool or interesting. When people say not to use pre made decks (including core 2k/6k) I don’t think they appreciate how awesome that deck is.

    Making your own cards when you're not at the beginner level is very nice, that's what I do with English cards (I'm in a kind of "intermediate" level in english). I've been trying to learn basic Russian (I think I'm probably a masochist) trying to search up the words that I don't know while immersing in the language, and I can say that's very annoying because I don't know 95% of the Russian words, can't understand how they connect to build the sentence even after learning the meaning, and registering all of them is inefficient (because not every word is common and suitable for beginners). So I think a good plan is following someone's path in the beginning, and find your own later.
    PS: Sorry if it was hard to understand, I don't train writing in English often. I confess I used Google Translate to improve some parts.

    No single resource is ever going to give you everything, no matter how good it is by itself.
    If you learn some words from cards, then hear (or see) those words in Japanese news videos, variety shows, dramas, etc., it becomes like 10 times easier to remember those new words because seeing them being used in "real life" is precisely the value that immersion provides. It is so satisfying when you recognize a new word.
    Also, I would recommend "TheMoeWay Tango N5" deck as it feels much easier than the Core 2k/6k deck. The Tango deck is more natural and generally uses sentences instead of individual words. It sounds more difficult at first because memorizing a sentence sounds harder than memorizing a word, but many of the sentences reuse words, and sentences provide much more context than just individual words. You can do both decks at once and adjust how many new cards a day is shown from each deck (as well as the interval numbers).

    I always heard the same thing, that we should do our own decks so it's more personal so it sticks more, but I couldn't totally agree because it's soooo time consuming....
    Your experience and your point of view (especially on the difference between words&sentence decks and that decks should be sort of familiar) really makes sense to me so I can now close this question for which I had not found a 'finite' answer until now.
    I'm using a core10k deck but not just using it normally, I suspended everything and unsuspend cards with the words I encounter in my method, so searching words in a premade deck instead of doing the time consuming task creating cards for it. For now I'm happy with it bcz the deck is really detailed, with sentences, pitch and everything. Sometimes there's not the word I'm looking for unfortunately, shit happens.
    Thanks for your video :)

    To each their own, I guess. I tried 2k core or something like that but ended up giving up on it. Now I try to review the material of my textbook and I decided to make a deck out of the words from all of the lessons. When I add a word card, I try to remember if I've ever heard this word in a song, tv show or a game. For example, the word 小さな is one that I remember through the lyric of the song Solanin by AKFG. I don't really know if it would work, but at least it's fun to remember songs, movies and words.

    I'm 1/3 of the way through the Tango N4 deck and I like the structure it provides (i+1 vocab or grammar point, mostly sentence cards). I do some sentence mining on the side related to the domain I ultimately want to focus on, but it's not a priority right now. As long as the cards are serving you (not the other way around) and you're progressing, I think it comes down to personal preference.
    On that note, I tried using Anki for grammar study but it wasn't working for me, so now I just do lookups when needed + keep track of the grammar points I understand on a spreadsheet.

    If the goal is fluency, pound as much vocab as possible and immersion a ton. That's pretty much what I'm doing. 8-12h of immersion daily. Core 10k deck with sentences voiced. I'll have to learn the words at some point anyway, so might aswell plow through them. The context and nuanced meaning will come naturally with immersion. The downside is that this approach is really rough unless you know that it works and can keep yourself going. I'm going for the long game. Also reading Tae Kims and rushing through WK.

      @@alexjustalexyt1144 A bit hard to quantify but I'll try. Day 665 (today): Still doing atleast 5h of immersion daily and 1.5h SRS, most days about 8 hours. Time wise I have no idea, conservatively 3600 hours, probably closer to 5000. 2100 kanji, 13-15k words (probably way more since I constantly look up new words daily, anything from 30-100 depending on content) Fairly comfortable with N5-N2 grammar, somewhat comfortable with half of the N1 grammar and the other half is so-so (still working on that bit though). You come to a point where you don't really know, especially when it comes to word count, the first 10k are easy to count, the rarer words and the like come and go when it come to "knowing" them (depends on context aswell). Done with WK pretty much (done all the lessons since 3 months, just gotta mature/burn them). Still working my way through 10k deck, 30 cards a day (half sentences half words in isolation), and 15 grammar sentences a day. I'm done with both in 245 days, at which point I'd probably be around 16k words comfortably. Will continue to immerse and SRS until then, then start reading novels and make cards out of that. A bit long-winded sorry.

    One thing I didn't like about the Core Deck was that the sentences would have words you haven't learned yet. So I often ended up learning those words, only for them to come up later.

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I never explicitly learned words I didn't know in the example sentences, but yeah the example sentences aren't exactly i+1 indeed.

    • @x123Juancho123x
      @x123Juancho123x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You aren't supposed to learn the sentence with vocab cards, they only serve to give you an idea on how the word is used. As someone who used a similar Core deck with the sentence in the front, learning two unknown words at the same time is pain. You'll end up failing one of them and thus having to review both again, wasting more time.
      I'd personally recommend doing the N5 Tango deck as the sentences are i+1, meaning they only have 1 unknown word. You can do N4 after that, but I'd personally suggest to start sentence mining while using the anime/netflix word frequency list with Yomichan.
      Your comprehension will boost a LOT if you learn the common words of what you immerse in, instead of premade decks which very often have bad frequency order (many of them being based on old newspapers).

    I’m really watching this video as I get back into Korean. Livakivi’s learning style matches mine more than other TH-camrs. I’m going to use a “core” 5k deck for Korean I got off Anki allegedly based on frequency with target words, an example sentence, English translations, and I paid for custom native audio to add to it. (The last bit was expensive and stupid but oh well 😅). I think my recognition Korean vocabulary is roughly 1.5k and I tried making my own cards from material I’m reading etc and I just can’t do as good a job filtering out the most important words from the ones I should ignore. A good premade deck is a god send. After I get more advanced I know I will not struggle to remember less common advanced vocabulary so mining my own words and sentences will go much smoother. It’s chaotic now though.

    I’d like to ask a few questions, as I have wanted get into language learning for quite a bit now.
    If you already answered these questions and I didn’t realize, then please tell me where I can find the answers.
    No1: as a non-native english speaker, but with almost perfect fluency, do you recommend using material in your native language (which is less, but should be easier to understand) or sticking with English, that has obviously the greatest offer, but can be more difficult? I mean, if I’m starting to learn a new language, I will obviously have less vocabulary than English (as most of us are quite skilled in it), but will it be harder to remember if it’s not in my native language?
    No2: you showed us how anyone can learn with patience and time, even if they have little free time. But what can you tell me about the “interference” that learning a language has on other stuff you make? I mean, I’m in high school, I play in a semi-professional team: time is limited, but in theory I could find some before/after studying or in the car while going to the team practice... but here’s the problem. As I finish studying, I get really tired, mentally speaking. I feel like I can’t do anything more, and even if it’s something cool that makes me happy I really struggle doing it (heck, I can’t even play my favorurite games if they are too competitive as I find it hard to concentrate after maybe 2.5 / 3 hours of studying). I feel like trying to fit anymore information would be impossible, or even bad, as I won’t properly remember neither of them. What is your experience about this?
    Keep up with your work, your videos are really cool!

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, you can try both material in your native language and in English. Personally there isn't much Japanese material in my native language (Estonian), so I don't even have much of a choice.
      As for the work capacity with learning a language requires, I feel like learning a language is something that can be done alongside other mentally tasks, as its something that can be done during idle times, and for example Anki doesn't require much other than to dedicate some time on it. You can always try it yourself and see how it works out for you!

    I have a couple of quick questions:
    What is/was your approach to using the core 2k deck, did you consider a card known if you could understand the meaning of the vocabulary or did you also learn the reading of the vocab?
    When starting the core 2k deck, what was your kanji level at?
    Also, do you have any tips for recognition of the vocab in the core 2k? I am currently 500 kanji deep in RRTK and I feel like the only reason why I am able to remember the kanji are due to the mnemonics which are not included in the core 2k.

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I started using the Core 2k/6k deck when I was about 2 weeks into learning Japanese, so I had barely learned any kanji. In the beginning, I was really strict with my reviews, I had to get the meaning and reading both completely correct, but I think its fine when you're a beginner to hit "good" when you got at least the meaning or the reading correct on NEW cards (when you get the same card a few days later, then aim for getting both the reading and meaning correct when you hit good).
      Personally I didn't use any mnemonics, I didn't even learn Kanji or radicals separately before I started using the Core 2k/6k, I just brute force grinded it every day until eventually it started getting A BIT easier due to getting more familiar with the readings and meanings of kanji. I don't have any life hacks other than to maybe start immersing through reading and watching stuff with Japanese subtitles to have more exposure to kanji/words so you'd recognize them easier in Anki.

      I started using the vocab deck way before I even knew of Matt, but even he has said that there are advantages and disadvantages to both, and both are valid. Imo, its better to get started with vocab cards, and later when you already have a baseline vocabulary of say 1000 to 4000 words, using sentence cards might become more valuable, as long as you make them from the content that you're immersing with.

    for learning vocabulary I'm still not really sold on flash cards as the fastest way. because in order for passing/failing a card to make sense, you have to limit the amount of reasons you could fail to understand... which means probably only one new thing per card. This isn't good for chunking information, and moving between cards is not a free action, it eats into your study time. That said, if you can tolerate the tedium it will eventually get you there.
    To really be learning in context, we probably want to be reviewing at least a paragraph, which means lots of words we may stumble on, but also lots of words we get for free because we remember what the paragraph was about. But that doesn't work so well with flashcards

    The only thing I hate about the 2k/6k deck is probably thaz some word appear multiple times and words with the same subject like weekdays are not all in the same part of the deck. I will probably try to build my own anki vocabulary deck with 20k words with the help of pyhton and probably with googles cloud text to speech api. Than I could use this deck to generate specific deck's for every Anime. I tested my program with mob psycho if I remember correctly has about 2800 different words, but the 2k/6k only contains only about 1300.

    Quick question:
    I started learning japanese everyday through Anki a month back, but turns out I had downloaded a core 2k/6k version that is split up into 3 parts, and it seems the order of the cards is very different compared to the complete deck. I just found this out and honestly I'm kinda clueless if I should start over or just keep going, what would you recommend? I don't wanna restart if it won't make much of a difference, but I figured you'd know more of the importance of the card order.

    just getting anki setup is already a pain in the ass, so as a beginner to be expected to make your own flashcards and somehow keep that up is crazy, premade all the way. With the Core 2k acquired you can start moving into custom decks imo. If the core2k/6k deck wasn't as good as it is then I could see an argument for just going custom immediately, but there is no reason to when that deck will give you so much value out of the box

    Can I ask you what you think about using memrise? In case you don't know it, it is also a flashcard app/website but way simpler than anki. It can only do three things "learn", "review" and "turbo". But instead of showing you the front and then the back, it shows you the front and either gives you multiple choice or you have to type in the answer (randomly chosen which type of exercise).
    The deck I use has native voice but I am not sure if it is a good alternative since EVERYONE only every mentions Anki. The multiple choice makes it a lot faster to go through (but of course you don't have to think as hard) and the typing makes it slower again (but you have to "actively" produce the language, instead of "just" thinking about it).
    Also the one I use has 2 cards for every word. One where you get the english word and have to type in the japanese or see the japanese word and have to choose the English one and one where you get the Kanji and have to type in /(choose) the pronunciation. It's supposed to help you with reading.
    Do you have any thoughts about this? The one I do right now includes everything you need vocabluary wise for N5 and there are decks for N4-1 too.

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its up to you - I know some memrise community made decks have the same Core 2k/6k as mentioned in the video.
      The cards where you type the Japanese from English are output cards, which I personally don't bother with, because I didn't need to output early. But if you want to output (speak/write) early, then its probably fine to strengthen your recall and active vocabulary.

      I'd recommend doing the N5 Tango deck as the sentences are i+1, meaning they only have 1 unknown word.

      "友達「 ともだち」と一緒「いっしょ」宿題「しゅくだい」を*した*。" or in English "I did my homework with a friend."
      AND as you can see the word "する" isn't there.
      So i did a research as little as possible (since I'm too lazy at the moment ) but there wasn't really a forum that specifically talks about my problem. And if you noticed the した is in bolded which is bolded in my anki too (bolded words in anki means it's the main word). So I came up to the conclusion where する has another form (which could be した) that varies depending on the sentence itself. To put this in perspective it's like *make turns to made* based on the sentence.
