Drum playing reminds me of engine work - loud, precise, perfect in every moment of it's function, without any unnecessary movement- perfect machine. I admire your work.
Funny that you say that, because the first thing I imagined when I heard this song, is the train from Snowpiercer. This massive, unstoppable behemoth of a machine ramming through ice formations and constantly going forward without stopping or deviating from its course. It's like a never-ending clanking and banging of an unstoppable machine. It's such an awesome song. I think it's my complete favorite surpassing Lethargica and Electric Red even.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
that was a joy to watch, searched Swarm drum cover as a shot in the dark, with some faint hope, and then this clip shows up, and the guy just nails it hard, dayum
+theone1 Thanks for watching! This song is my favorite from Koloss drum-wise, but overall my favorite Koloss track is Demon's Name. It's too difficult for me to pick my overall favorite Meshuggah song though; too many options!
+Owen McKinley you're welcome! For me, I am just blown away by the way that dark atmosphere is created by all the members. There's something very dark and Erie about this song and it just gets me jamming every freaking time!
Bro, you are the best cover drummer I have ever seen on You Tube and I search for that a lot. I listen to your version of Tool's Triad at the gym all the time, and your precision and skill adds to the original song. Its pure percussive trance to me. So thank you so much. Have you ever considered doing more Tool covers or ventured into Gojira's work at all? Swarm is one of my favourite Meshuggah songs, also love Marrow, but like you said its tough to really pick a fave. Keep it up, I love your stuff.
That's awesome dude, I'm pumped to know you've enjoyed that Tool cover. Thank you! I've strongly considered more Tool covers, but I've gravitated towards Meshuggah's work for quite a while now. I listen to both bands equally though; Tool and Meshuggah are my two favorite bands (co-favorites, I'd say haha). I have huge respect for Gojira...they're incredibly talented and have been very consistently good. I just hardly listen to them, or any metal at all (generally speaking) outside of Meshuggah. Thanks again!
You deserve it man. You're a machine!! I would love to see a ticks and leeches cover or Humiliative/Marrow by Meshuggah. Anyways, I follow your stuff all the time so cheers mate, hope you use that pumped up feeling for another wicked cover. Cheers :)
Again, thanks man! I've got a few originals (me and my brother) on my page as well ;) But yeah, the covers will continue; not sure how rapidly, but I'm still motivated to challenge myself with them
Thanks dude. I was able to manage the Swiss triplets over Swarm's foot pattern in a somewhat "unintentional" way... around the time I recorded this cover, I was playing along to Rosetta Stoned by Tool almost everyday (had no plans to cover it; was simply playing along with it for fun). There's a well-known section in that song starting at approximately 7min in that inspired (and helped me actually learn) my approach to Swarm. Just take a listen to it (if you're not already familiar with it) and you'll see where I'm coming from. Thanks again!
Oh wow, I am aware of that track but I never made that connection! I totally hear it now that you mention. Thanks for the reply man, I'm not quite at this level of practice but it's all a work in progress. Keep doing your thing brother, hugely inspiring.
Mr. McKinley, you absolute fucking beast. I thought you couldn't top your Triad cover and yet you have proved me wrong. I've been listening to this cover more than the actual song these days.
Really tricky polymeter here: groups of 4 framed by the snare phased with groups of three in the kick. Very difficult and typically played wrong ignoring the polymeter. Awesome job!
@tristendry2089 Tomas plays a very straight-forward tom pattern live and in the studio recording. What he plays is appropriate for the song regarding drum composition. As always, Tomas writes and executes literally perfectly. My goal was to really go hard and capture the deep energy I've always felt in the primal tom patterns, so to highlight that and challenge myself, I played a physically-demanding Swiss-triplet(ish) type groove that really pummels. It was something fun for the sake of the cover
Thanks dude! We all know Troy is certainly a beast. That Koloss medley of his is damn impressive. I'm happy with how I approached this cover, but honestly I have no idea how Tomas Haake plays it. I can't tell what he's doing on the album version of the song, plus I saw Meshuggah play Swarm live in 2013 (front row) and couldn't see Tomas because of the crazy lighting, and The Ophidian Trek DVD doesn't show him drumming during their performance of this song. So yeah, I just pieced together patterns that I thought were complimentary and hoped my version would suffice. Glad to know you enjoyed it man.
Bravo! Your Meshuggah covers are making me question my own sexual orientation. Just kidding! There is no orientation for being sexually attracted to drums, I don't think.
This song makes my head explode, the 4/4 pulse is around 135 BPM, but the toms and guitars are around 180 BPM, which actually is a ratio of 3/4, correct me if I'm wrong that is just mind blowing as the song has several parts where they reset and start on beat 1 but then the guitars and toms continue in this faster BPM, I'm not a drummer and I suck at theory so I hope it was clear. Kudos man, this sounds, feels and looks damn near impossible to play!
Thanks man. I'm still not entirely pleased with it, being that my underside mic for the resonant head wasn't functioning properly at the time of recording this cover. I don't have spare microphones laying around (haha) so I worked with just the top batter head mic. Thanks again!
Nicely played, and a good cover! I'm mostly wondering why are you playing the 'guitar solo' part (if that's what you can call it) with R L * L R * R L * L R footing, * indicating snare? Isn't that harder than RL * RL * RL * RL * ... ? Also, I can't bother myself to spend extra 10 minutes trying to transcribe the order the hands in the main beat. Take around 1:27 for example, you don't play just right-left-right-left. Or then the ghost hits really make me imagine things, or the sound quality of the video. Could you open it up for me a little, using "8" and "16" etc to mark as 8th and 16th notes? Example: Bleed has a 32-32-16-16 32-32-16-16 pattern on bass drum (both legs), the right leg has "16-8, 16-8, 16-8.." and the left one has 16th note with a dot, "16*, 16*, 16*, 16*" (or 12 because it's between 8 and 16 in terms of length). You getting my point here? Alternatively you could write it on paper and upload a picture on imgur.com and post a link. Would you kindly? :) I'm currently practising Bleed (half-way there) and after that I think I'd like to learn this one. It's just really hard to make sense of toms on the song, since they all sound the same.
Thank you for watching! For some reason, the footing of RL * LR felt good to me. No idea why...just felt smoother. Still does to this day haha. I'm kinda getting your point in regards to how you want me to notate the tom pattern, but I'm not sure I'd chart it out correctly. Sorry dude. Someday I might get around to uploading a transcription for this cover. I can tell you this, though: The hands are a series of calculated "broken-up" swiss triplets (R [RL] L) interlaced with single strokes, accented. Play the video on half-speed and I bet you could figure it out.
Alright, thanks! I've got enough on the plate with Bleed now, so it's not that acute right now. I get what you mean, and I propably could write it down to guitar pro 6 in 10 minutes, but flu happened and I just can't bother right now. But I get the picture now. :) I'll get onto it some day when the time comes. You haven't practised to play Bleed, have you? (I'd like to see your R L L R footing there. :p )
+Owen McKinley By putting a floor tom on each side of the snare (instead of playing a traditional set), you make it very easy to 'see' the rhythm. Plus, it's always extremely cool to see the physicality of someone playing the drums, and you make it look friggin unbelievably cool, not to mention that you're a great player. :) Yo!
+Yo BroMan Well thanks for watching; I appreciate it! My floor-tom set-up was inspired by Travis Orbin. If you think I'm a good drummer then I suggest you venture over to Travis' channel and watch some of his content. He makes me (and most everyone else) look like a joke on the drums. Again, thank you!
Eric Eckhart They use both polymeters, polyrhythms and syncopations. Maybe not in every song and riff, but for the most part. I haven't analyzed Swarm, so I don't know exactly what's in it, but I know several of their other songs have it. Not that it matters, I guess you "could" write it all down as 4/4 (as is the case with many gp tabs) but for me, it's easier understanding the parts sometimes if they are written in the underlying rhythm rather than the 4/4 on top.
Most underrated Meshuggah song. Sweet Cover!
Ophidian Princess my favorite meshuggah song hands down. It makes me think of war!
Pineal Gland Optics and the Concatenation Remix

That little fill at 3:55 is a beauty 👌🏻
thats indeed a sick fill i replayed it so many times
Everything about this cover, especially the toms was perfect.
+Daniel Calderon That means a lot man, thank you!
You play with the power, precision and ferocity of a hovering attack helicopter.
Haha, thanks dude. Really appreciate the comment!
More like the precision of a company of navy seals on a mission to seek and destroy someone on the United States hit list

Mate. That was a mind blowing cover. Can’t even begin to put words into how deep in the pocket you are there. That was awesome 🙌 ❤️
fantastic man!
I like how you don't put the original song too loud like other cover channels do it, hiding behind the mix
again great performance!
Thanks a ton man, I appreciate you watching and enjoying it!
