Hi Gena, I’d rinse the Pon outside rather than in your sink otherwise the dust may well cause problems with the plumbing. I also root directly into Pon which makes it a little easier. Reusing Pon needs simple sterilisation by boiling so it can be even more cost effective over the long run. Happy 🪴💚
Thanks for the tip! I’ve heard people say it can cause issues with plumbing. Boiling is a great idea and then just add new fertilizer pellets to the cleaned pon. I will definitely give that a try 😊. Thank you 🥰.
Great info, Gena. I have a pretty good hoya community in my area and I’ve generously added to my collection this summer😳. I’m glad to hear you favour pon over soil bc I’ve been thinking the same but afraid to go all in. One word of caution, one of these channels used to rinse her pon in the sink till she ended up with a big fat plumbing issue. I rinse mine in the sink into a container then dump it outside. Thank you Laurie!!!! Oh wow good to know. Some pieces do inevitably fall into the sink. I’m mostly able to gather them together before they go down the drain but I’ll think twice next time. Rinsing into a bucket is a great idea. Definitely don’t want a plumbing issue!!!!
I’m unsure if anyone has explained this, but you were talking about how water propped plants don’t rot all the time while rooting, but they’re constantly wet. I’ve found that soil contains different organic bacteria and fun things that cause the rot and are exacerbated by the moisture! PON probably doesn’t allow that bacteria to grow as much or as easily
Yup that makes perfect sense. I'm hoping the charcoal that gets added to the chunky soil mix might help this not be as big of an issue. I believe charcoal is supposed to help out in the bad bacteria department.
Hi Gena. Have you tried rooting Hoyas directly into Pon? I pot fresh cuttings into Pon and place them in a prop box for the humidity until I see roots. Then I pull them out and of the box to my regular room humidity. Works great!

OH NO!! You got the Zeolite "dust". I accidentally got that. I didn't use it. Nice video. I like Pon. I've always made my own. I still have plants in a chunky mix though. It's really expensive starting out. Yes Pon needs to be rinsed well.

Finally getting back to this. Crazy life getting in my way . LOL I bought the hoya Spartioides. It died within a week. O was so bummed.Might have gotten too dry in shipping?One day I will get another one. Fascinating on mixing your own pon. I have not tried it. Certainly considering it.I LOVE growing babies in the clear cups. All types of babies. I had to resort to trying to root one of those new rhipsalis cuttings in spag. This one kept rotting on me in water and soil. fingers crossed. Your new shirt looks great!

I followed your suggestion to transfer hoya cuttings to PON, and I used your PON mixture-make instructions. I moved my Hoya lobbi and Hoya polyneura to PON. It took over a month, but they’re finally starting to revive. They were just declining in my regular Hoya mix.
What conditions does your Polyneura like? Mine has done nothing for an entire year except a weird shaped, tiny leaf. I’m growing mine outside but the air temps are quite warm and humid. Maybe too hot?
@@TheQueensWish mine is in my office and the temps range from 72-76F during the summer. Winter will be like 65-72F. I keep mine under growlights. I still feel like a beginner with this plant…still learning how to keep it happy and alive 😊.

But I appreciate your links to the components for DIY and your step by step guidance. I’ve had to restart a Bella and a Rotundiflora, so they are both in line for PON. I’d also like to pull Polyneura out of moss and put it into PON. Can you please add a link for the Liquidirt product? Are you watering everytime with Liquidirt after 6 month?
The Bella, rotundiflora, and polyneura are prime candidates for pon for sure!!! I’ve got all three of those and they are in pon 😊. Sure I can link that for you. Yup! All plants in pon that have been in there over 6 months get the liquidirt. Although yesterday I repotted some of the old ones into my newly mixed DIY pon and I’m thinking about just “recharging” them after 6 months. Cleaning the pon and adding new osmocote. I do have some cuttings rooting in moss (first time for that also) how often does the moss need to be moistened? And is keeping them in a zip lock bag a good idea while they root? Hi!!! I never let my moss dry out, or at least I try not to. The higher humidity you can give them the better so a ziplock bag would be fine. Just remember to air it out now and then 😊. Thank you!!! You too 🥰.
It really is very easy to DIY. Do you just use Osmocote? I'm curious if you have a preferred liquid fertilizer to use after the Osmocote (or whatever dry granular fertilizer you might use) in the mix "expires".
I have not yet moved a large established plant to pon yet. It’s all been cuttings or plants that had root rot and were rerooted in water before transferring to pon.

Awesome!!! Yeah my first order was $17.99 and the next one was $17.83. I think it’s been harder to get recently so perhaps the price went up for that reason.
@@turogers13 WOW! That is very pricey! It might possibly be cheaper to make it yourself with those prices. I've done both and I don't see any difference really between what I make and the actual Lechuza Pon brand. It looks a little different but has the same results :).

Hi! That’s great! I have had such great success with pon and highly recommend it. In my experience it has been ok to let the pon dry out accidentally but I try to make sure it never completely dries out. My goal is to keep the vessel halfway full. But again, I’ve had them dry out with no consequences.
Buying all the ingredients is not cheap! Do you have any problems once your roots have grown into the reservoir?... I mean with rot? Love the video! I always love educational videos! Great job!
Thanks!!! Yeah, those components do add up. I haven't really had any major issue with rot on roots that find their way into the reservoir. I mean sometimes they do rot on the tips, but it doesn't affect the whole system.
I've found Lechuza to be too dense except for my really thirsty plants like maranta and calathea so I’ve been mixing it 50/50 with my own homemade version. I've been using Bonsai Jacks 1/4” pumice and black lava rock. My zeolite is about the same size, maybe a little bigger. The DIY PON recipe I've been using is 1 part zeolite to 2 parts pumice and 2 parts black lava rock. I mix that 50/50 with Lechuza and it has been working for me 😊 I'd hesitate to add any organic material to the mix but I'm planning to try adding perlite. It'll add some aeration and it's so cheap it'll make the PON stretch further.
Very interesting! Love reading your experience with it. Were you finding root rot from it being too dense? I received a Hoya from Etsy and it was in a mix of Lechuza and fluval stratum. The fluval made the mix very dense but the plant roots looked soooo good. I repotted it into just my straight DIY pon mix. Great idea adding perlite to stretch the amount.
@@ThePinkTrellis I had a touch of root rot on a couple of philos. Nothing too serious or much different from soil, but it's been better with the chunkier PON mix.
Hello Gena. I currently have my plants in leca and would like to transfer into pon. Do you have to flush the substrate with water on occasions like you would do with leca?
Hi!!! I have never flushed pon except for the initial rinse when first using it. It’s my understanding that it’s not necessary. Actually now that I think of it I have rinsed it when I saw some algae buildup on the surface of the pot/substrate. But otherwise I don’t think it’s necessary. Definitely research it just in case I’m misinformed 😊.
Ok, that's one less thing to do. I'll have to try it. I'm now getting more and more into Hoya plants and I've been seeing it looks so much healthier in pon. I have a few that are still in soil. Thank you for the info. 🙂
@@claritzareyes4990 Sure! No problem! I have a few that are doing wonderfully in pon. Mine mostly started out as cuttings in water and then moved to pon. I do have a Hoya Biakensis splash that started in soil and rotted, rerooted in water, and then moved to pon, and it's doing great now too. I hope the transition goes smoothly for you :).
Are you growing those hoyas in a tent? I see a lot of aerial roots which seem to happen in high humidity. I know a lot of people that grow hoyas in pon. I tried one and I just never got the hang of it. I am growing a philodendron White Knight in pon. It was an experiment that has been fine. But I think it needs a pole and that is more challenging with pon, so I think I will move it to soil soon. Fortunately it developed a lot of roots in pon!

Hi Gena, have you tried using PON for your Begonias? I'm thinking of trying it with a couple; because I hate fungus gnats, I typically bottom-water my begonias, and keep a layer of sand on top. Your thoughts appreciated.
Hi! I have not yet. Soil has been working well for me. If I ran into problems I would definitely give it a try though. Yeah...fungus gnats are a pain for sure. I've seen fungus gnats in Pon before so keep that in mine if it's the only reason you want to switch them over. I've been fighting them with sticky traps for the adults and mosquito bits for the soil. Thanks :).
@@ThePinkTrellis thanks. good to know. My son is heavy into hydroponics, and he's all about "no dirt," so I am interested in playing around with alternatives, and Begonias are my favorite houseplants, so Begonia in PON becomes a thing to do so we've got a topic of conversation for Thanksgiving. :-)
The bark chips and the zeolite retain moisture but it’s not a bad thing. I’ve seen some recipes that call for vermiculite and the plants do great with that. I can’t get an exact price for you because I’d have to mix up all of my ingredients to get the exact amount (poundage) these ingredients make. And that’s way more pon than I want to have mixed up at this time. But I did link all of the components with prices. It would mix up a lot of pon for sure 😊.
Will you be transferring larger Hoyas to pon or is this just for transition after moss and before your airy potting mix from prior video? What other plants thrive in pon? Syngoniums? Ferns?begonias? African violets? I wonder if it might eliminate pests like gnats. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
@@asianangie7209 most likely I won’t transfer any large Hoyas that are doing well in soil. I’m going to use this mainly for propagations that will be in my collection, not for resale. Although, some Hoyas, like the Polyneura will be propagated in pon and sold in pon. They just do so much better in it. I think there are a lot of plant genuses that do well in it. Not sure about African Violets though. That’s something I need to explore more. It would be great if they could go in pon!!!!

@@ttschrock7126 It's just a personal preference not to use Pon. It totally works for many people. There aren't any Hoya that I would suggest not going into Pon. If it's working well for you stick with it!!!!! :D
@@ThePinkTrellis All of my others look and act well. But the Linearis is trickier. This one I bought from you and then I also ordered a large one from Poland. That was older. I combined them and left them alone for a little while. But I noticed the leaves drooping, so decided it was time to transfer to PON. The soil under the old one was horrible. It was like MUD. The little one from you was fine. So I cleaned them up yesterday and put into PON. But I did not like how it looked and kinda freaked out. So last night I switched it to my really nice chunky mix (no soil) which is full of good things. So hopefully she will do better. I like PON because I over water. (UGH!!) But the mud part was old - literally looked like peat mixed with clay. It was a mess. Have a great day! Thanks Gena.
Hi my name is Shyama, I am from Toronto, after transferring into pon the hoya or whatever plant will grow nicely, so After I decide to sell that plant, can I tranfer that back into soil, grow it for another 1 month in soil and sell that plant or transfer it into moss and sell?
Hi, Shyama! Nice to meet you! I personally have transferred Hoya out of pon and into soil with no problems. It's a good idea, as you suggested, to let it acclimate for a month before selling. I think if you were to transfer to moss you could sell it right away. I think either is a good option but moss would be a quicker transition for sure.
@@ThePinkTrellis yes I put some space in the reservoir cup so I can keep more liquid in it. The watering stays more consistent especially if you have lots of plants. I have over 100 so in order to not have to keep adding liquid more often I add pebbles or leca to increase the space. It also creates more natural humidity and grouping my plants together keeps them even in temp plus higher in humidity.

You should not really mix components of different sizes as it will affect the drainage and not in a good way. Your DIY would be interesting to know cost comparison.

I use any fertilizer, orchid fertilizer or cal mag etc. you don't have to use those pellets
I don't rinse either just shake it out a little. I have over 150 in pon with no issues with out rinsing

Also a little 3% hydrogen peroxide pushes back bacteria if you see it on the surface.
Yes its not the water that causes the rot its the bacteria and lack of oxygen. Charcoal can help, but wont fully prevent if people over water

I followed your suggestion to transfer hoya cuttings to PON, and I used your PON mixture-make instructions. I moved my Hoya lobbi and Hoya polyneura to PON. It took over a month, but they’re finally starting to revive. They were just declining in my regular Hoya mix.

What conditions does your Polyneura like? Mine has done nothing for an entire year except a weird shaped, tiny leaf. I’m growing mine outside but the air temps are quite warm and humid. Maybe too hot?
@@TheQueensWish mine is in my office and the temps range from 72-76F during the summer. Winter will be like 65-72F. I keep mine under growlights. I still feel like a beginner with this plant…still learning how to keep it happy and alive 😊.

But I appreciate your links to the components for DIY and your step by step guidance. I’ve had to restart a Bella and a Rotundiflora, so they are both in line for PON. I’d also like to pull Polyneura out of moss and put it into PON. Can you please add a link for the Liquidirt product? Are you watering everytime with Liquidirt after 6 month?
The Bella, rotundiflora, and polyneura are prime candidates for pon for sure!!! I’ve got all three of those and they are in pon 😊. Sure I can link that for you. Yup! All plants in pon that have been in there over 6 months get the liquidirt. Although yesterday I repotted some of the old ones into my newly mixed DIY pon and I’m thinking about just “recharging” them after 6 months. Cleaning the pon and adding new osmocote. It really is very easy to DIY. Do you just use Osmocote? I'm curious if you have a preferred liquid fertilizer to use after the Osmocote (or whatever dry granular fertilizer you might use) in the mix "expires".

I have not yet moved a large established plant to pon yet. It’s all been cuttings or plants that had root rot and were rerooted in water before transferring to pon.

Hi! That’s great! I have had such great success with pon and highly recommend it. In my experience it has been ok to let the pon dry out accidentally but I try to make sure it never completely dries out. My goal is to keep the vessel halfway full. But again, I’ve had them dry out with no consequences.

Buying all the ingredients is not cheap! Do you have any problems once your roots have grown into the reservoir?... I mean with rot? Love the video! I always love educational videos! Great job!
Thanks!!! Yeah, those components do add up. I haven't really had any major issue with rot on roots that find their way into the reservoir. I mean sometimes they do rot on the tips, but it doesn't affect the whole system.
I've found Lechuza to be too dense except for my really thirsty plants like maranta and calathea so I’ve been mixing it 50/50 with my own homemade version. I've been using Bonsai Jacks 1/4” pumice and black lava rock. My zeolite is about the same size, maybe a little bigger.
The DIY PON recipe I've been using is 1 part zeolite to 2 parts pumice and 2 parts black lava rock. I mix that 50/50 with Lechuza and it has been working for me 😊
I'd hesitate to add any organic material to the mix but I'm planning to try adding perlite. It'll add some aeration and it's so cheap it'll make the PON stretch further.
Very interesting! Love reading your experience with it. Were you finding root rot from it being too dense? I received a Hoya from Etsy and it was in a mix of Lechuza and fluval stratum. The fluval made the mix very dense but the plant roots looked soooo good. I repotted it into just my straight DIY pon mix. Great idea adding perlite to stretch the amount.
@@ThePinkTrellis I had a touch of root rot on a couple of philos. Nothing too serious or much different from soil, but it's been better with the chunkier PON mix.

Hello Gena. I currently have my plants in leca and would like to transfer into pon. Do you have to flush the substrate with water on occasions like you would do with leca?
Hi!!! I have never flushed pon except for the initial rinse when first using it. It’s my understanding that it’s not necessary. Actually now that I think of it I have rinsed it when I saw some algae buildup on the surface of the pot/substrate. But otherwise I don’t think it’s necessary. Definitely research it just in case I’m misinformed 😊.
Ok, that's one less thing to do. I'll have to try it. I'm now getting more and more into Hoya plants and I've been seeing it looks so much healthier in pon. I have a few that are still in soil. Thank you for the info. 🙂
@@claritzareyes4990 Sure! No problem! I have a few that are doing wonderfully in pon. Mine mostly started out as cuttings in water and then moved to pon. I do have a Hoya Biakensis splash that started in soil and rotted, rerooted in water, and then moved to pon, and it's doing great now too. I hope the transition goes smoothly for you :).

Are you growing those hoyas in a tent? I see a lot of aerial roots which seem to happen in high humidity. I know a lot of people that grow hoyas in pon. I tried one and I just never got the hang of it. I am growing a philodendron White Knight in pon. It was an experiment that has been fine. But I think it needs a pole and that is more challenging with pon, so I think I will move it to soil soon. Fortunately it developed a lot of roots in pon!
I was growing them in a tent but they are now sitting out on my ikea vittsjo cabinet 😊.

Hi Gena, have you tried using PON for your Begonias? I'm thinking of trying it with a couple; because I hate fungus gnats, I typically bottom-water my begonias, and keep a layer of sand on top. Your thoughts appreciated.
Hi! I have not yet. Soil has been working well for me. If I ran into problems I would definitely give it a try though. Yeah...fungus gnats are a pain for sure. I've seen fungus gnats in Pon before so keep that in mine if it's the only reason you want to switch them over. I've been fighting them with sticky traps for the adults and mosquito bits for the soil. Thanks :).

The bark chips and the zeolite retain moisture but it’s not a bad thing. I’ve seen some recipes that call for vermiculite and the plants do great with that. I can’t get an exact price for you because I’d have to mix up all of my ingredients to get the exact amount (poundage) these ingredients make. And that’s way more pon than I want to have mixed up at this time. But I did link all of the components with prices. It would mix up a lot of pon for sure 😊.

Will you be transferring larger Hoyas to pon or is this just for transition after moss and before your airy potting mix from prior video? What other plants thrive in pon? Syngoniums? Ferns?begonias? African violets? I wonder if it might eliminate pests like gnats. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
@@asianangie7209 most likely I won’t transfer any large Hoyas that are doing well in soil. I’m going to use this mainly for propagations that will be in my collection, not for resale. Although, some Hoyas, like the Polyneura will be propagated in pon and sold in pon. They just do so much better in it. I think there are a lot of plant genuses that do well in it. Not sure about African Violets though. That’s something I need to explore more. It would be great if they could go in pon!!!!

@@ThePinkTrellis All of my others look and act well. But the Linearis is trickier. This one I bought from you and then I also ordered a large one from Poland. That was older. I combined them and left them alone for a little while. But I noticed the leaves drooping, so decided it was time to transfer to PON. The soil under the old one was horrible. It was like MUD. The little one from you was fine. So I cleaned them up yesterday and put into PON. But I did not like how it looked and kinda freaked out. So last night I switched it to my really nice chunky mix (no soil) which is full of good things. So hopefully she will do better. I like PON because I over water. (UGH!!) But the mud part was old - literally looked like peat mixed with clay. It was a mess.

Hi, Shyama! Nice to meet you! I personally have transferred Hoya out of pon and into soil with no problems. It's a good idea, as you suggested, to let it acclimate for a month before selling. I think if you were to transfer to moss you could sell it right away. I think either is a good option but moss would be a quicker transition for sure.
If you put a little mix in the second cup it will allow for more water making it more lasting
I haven't tried that. Do you mean in the reservoir cup? I'm not sure I understand how that would make a difference?
@@ThePinkTrellis yes I put some space in the reservoir cup so I can keep more liquid in it. The watering stays more consistent especially if you have lots of plants. I have over 100 so in order to not have to keep adding liquid more often I add pebbles or leca to increase the space. It also creates more natural humidity and grouping my plants together keeps them even in temp plus higher in humidity.

You should not really mix components of different sizes as it will affect the drainage and not in a good way. Your DIY would be interesting to know cost comparison.
Hi! I never noticed a problem with it. In my experience, drainage isn't an issue with pon because they don't really drain and are constantly submerged in some water. The plants are still going strong that are still in pon. I moved some out and back into soil which I have learned I prefer. Thanks!
Plants don't rot in water bc water is 2 hydrogen molecules and 1 oxygen molecule..
